• Falls to Phillies
Irvin (2-4) took the loss Friday against the Phillies, allowing four runs on five hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out two.

Advice: Irvin got off to a shaky start Friday, allowing all four runs over his first three innings. The 27-year-old right-hander had allowed just four earned runs in his previous three starts (18 innings), striking out 13 while issuing just one walk in that span. Overall, Irvin has a solid 3.91 ERA with a 1.11 WHIP and 38:9 K:BB over nine starts (50.2 innings) this season. He's currently lined up for a home matchup with the Twins in his next outing. • Grabs third save
Hoffman earned the save in Friday's 4-2 win over the Nationals, allowing one hit in a scoreless ninth inning.

Advice: After Jose Alvarado finished the eighth inning, the Phillies turned to Hoffman in the ninth. The right-hander worked around Joey Gallo's one-out double, closing out the 4-2 victory for his third save of the season -- his first since April 30. Hoffman's been sharp this year, pitching to a 0.90 ERA with a 0.95 WHIP and 27:7 K:BB over 20 innings. While Alvarado is still likely Philly's preferred ninth-inning option, Hoffman should see the occasional save chance depending on matchups. Rotowire.com Today, 6:26 pm

  • Rebounds vs. Nats
Wheeler (5-3) earned the win Friday against the Nationals, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over 7.1 innings. He struck out six.

Advice: It was an encouraging return to form for Wheeler, after he was tagged for six runs in four innings in his last start against Miami. Before that outing, Wheeler had allowed just one earned run over four starts (25.1 innings). He's now won five of his last six starts while lowering his ERA to 2.52 with a 0.97 WHIP and 71:19 K:BB over 60.2 innings this season. Wheeler is currently in line for a home matchup with the Rangers in his next outing. Rotowire.com Today, 6:20 pm

  • Jeff Hoffman slams door on Nationals in ninth
Jeff Hoffman slammed the door on the Nationals in the ninth inning on Friday evening, protecting a two-run lead to earn his third save of the season.

Advice: Jose Alvarado came on to get the final two outs in the eighth inning of this one, leaving Hoffman to clean things up in the ninth. He did allow a one-out double to Joey Gallo that brought the tying run to the dish, but was able to get Ildemaro Vargas on a pop up to second base and Jesse Winker on a fly ball to right field to end it. Hoffman has been outstanding out of the Phillies’ bullpen this season, registering a 0.90 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and a 27/7 K/BB ratio across 19 1/3 innings. Rotoworld Today, 6:00 pm

  • Zack Wheeler fans six in victory over Nationals
Zack Wheeler picked up his fifth victory of the season on Friday night, holding the Nationals to just two runs on three hits over 7 1/3 strong innings of work.

Advice: The 33-year-old right-hander racked up six strikeouts on the night while issuing three free passes. The Nationals’ scoring in the contest came on a pair of RBI doubles — one by Keibert Ruiz in the second inning and another off the bat of Eddie Rosario in the fifth. Aside from that though, Wheeler was in complete control. He got 17 swings and misses on 104 pitches on the night — 10 on his fastball alone — while posting a CSW of 28 percent. Now 5-3 on the season, Wheeler will carry a 2.52 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and a 71/19 K/BB ratio (60 2/3 innings) into Thursday’s showdown against the Rangers. Rotoworld Today, 6:00 pm

  • Jake Irvin gives up four runs in loss to Phillies
Jake Irvin wasn’t at his best in a losing effort against the Phillies on Friday night, giving up four runs on five hits over his five innings of work.

Advice: The 27-year-old hurler walked one and struck out two batters on the night. The Phillies got him for a run in the first inning on an RBI double by Alec Bohm, then scratched out a pair of runs in the second inning and added another in the third on an RBI double by Brandon Marsh. Irvin got 10 swings and misses on 93 pitches on the evening — seven of those on his curveball — while registering a CSW of 27 percent. He’ll look to get back in the win column as he brings a 3.91 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and a 38/9 K/BB ratio (50 2/3 innings) into Wednesday’s matchup against the Twins. Rotoworld Today, 5:59 pm

  • Back with Reds
The Reds recalled Spiers from Triple-A Louisville on Friday.

Advice: Spiers will come up from the minors to replace Justin Wilson (shoulder), who landed on the 15-day IL on Friday. Spiers allowed three runs in four innings during his season debut in early April, but he has fared much better in Triple-A with a 2.43 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. The 26-year-old right-hander has been used as a starter in seven of his eight appearances at Louisville this year, though he will likely be used as a multi-inning reliever while with the Reds. • Placed on injured list
The Reds placed Wilson on the 15-day injured list Friday with left shoulder tightness.

Advice: Wilson struck out the only batter he faced during Thursday's win over the Dodgers in three pitches, though it seems he is now dealing with shoulder problems following his appearance. With the 36-year-old southpaw sidelined for the next two weeks, Carson Spiers will come up from Triple-A Louisville to fill the open spot on Cincinnati's pitching staff. Rotowire.com Today, 5:12 pm
  • Reds place Justin Wilson (shoulder) on 15-day IL
Reds placed LHP Justin Wilson on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder tightness.

Advice: The 36-year-old southpaw has seen plenty of action out of the Reds’ bullpen this season, posting an underwhelming 5.91 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and a 14/2 K/BB ratio over 10 2/3 innings in his 16 appearances. It’s not yet clear how long he’s expected to be shelved for. Carson Spiers was recalled from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move to replace Wilson in the Reds’ bullpen.
