  • Brett Anderson to make two more rehab starts
Brett Anderson (back) is expected to make two more minor league rehab starts before rejoining the Dodgers.

Advice: Anderson will throw five innings in his next start and then seven frames the following outing. As long as he makes it through both of those starts without any issues, he'll be cleared to debut with the Dodgers in mid-August. 27 minutes ago

  • O'Malley plates lone run in loss to Cubs
Shawn O'Malley went 2-for-5 and plated the Mariners lone run in Friday afternoon's loss to the Cubs.

Advice: O'Malley drew the start at shortstop and hit out of the leadoff spot for the M's against left-hander John Lester. His RBI single in the ninth inning to plate Leonys Martin put a band aid on a stab wound, cutting their deficit to 11-1. O'Malley also swiped his fourth base of the year in the contest. 47 minutes ago
  • Raburn scratched Friday with knee contusion
Ryan Raburn was scratched from the Rockies starting lineup on Friday due to a left knee contusion.

Advice: He's listed as day-to-day. David Dahl will start in his place in left field and bat seventh for the Rockies on Friday against the Mets. 56 minutes ago

  • Shawn Tolleson optioned to Triple-A
Rangers optioned RHP Shawn Tolleson to Triple-A Round Rock.

Advice: It's been quite a fall for Tolleson, who began the season as the Rangers' closer. He's been knocked around for 12 runs this month to push his ERA for the season up to 7.68. Today, 1:20 pm

  • Brett Eibner optioned to Triple-A
Royals optioned OF Brett Eibner to Triple-A Omaha.

Advice: Eibner has hit .231/.286/.423 over 85 plate appearances in his multiple stints with the major league club. He wasn't going to play much with Lorenzo Cain back from the DL. Today, 12:22 pm

  • Cole Figueroa designated for assignment
Marlins designated INF Cole Figueroa for assignment.

  • Luis Valbuena (hamstring) placed on DL
Astros placed INF Luis Valbuena on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 27, with a right hamstring strain.

Advice: The Astros had said that Valbuena might be ready to play at some point over the weekend, but they've decided to play it safe and hold him out for at least a couple weeks. Alex Bregman will handle third base. Today, 12:04 pm

  • Blue Jays in on Jeremy Hellickson
SB Nation's Chris Cotillo reports that the Blue Jays are "considering many starting options," with Jeremy Hellickson, Rich Hill and the Rays' starters on their radar.

Advice: Cotillo adds that the Blue Jays are looking at potential bullpen options, as well. Hellickson seems like a poor fit back in the American League and at Rogers Centre, but he has pitched well lately. Hill is still dealing with a blister issue and is next start remains up in the air. Today, 10:16 am
  • Mets have discussed Jon Niese with Pirates
SB Nation's Chris Cotillo reports that the Mets have had talks with the Pirates about bringing back Jon Niese.

Advice: Cotillo cautions, though, that the Mets are "not aggressive" on rotation help, so it doesn't appear this is a front-burner discussion. Niese has put up a 4.91 ERA for the Pirates and was recently moved to the bullpen, but the Mets might view him as an upgrade over Logan Verrett. Today, 10:07 am
  • Dexter Fowler still nursing some soreness
Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Friday that Dexter Fowler is "not 100 percent over the soreness."

Advice: Fowler sat out Sunday with "general soreness" before playing in four straight, but he's out of the lineup again Friday. It seems fair to question whether it might actually be Fowler's hamstring that's bothering him again and the Cubs just don't want to divulge that information. The veteran outfielder was activated from the disabled list a week ago after missing over a month of action. The Cubs have Jason Heyward in center field, Ben Zobrist in right and Javier Baez at second base Friday. Today, 10:04 am
  • Tommy La Stella optioned to Triple-A
Cubs optioned INF Tommy La Stella to Triple-A Iowa.

Advice: La Stella has batted .295/.388/.457 this season, but with Chris Coghlan (rib cage) back from the disabled list there weren't going to be many at-bats available for him. He'll be back eventually. Today, 8:26 am

Mariners optioned LHP David Rollins to Triple-A Tacoma.

Ramiro Pena (groin) struck out as a pinch-hitter in Thursday's loss to the Nationals.

  • Shawn Kelley retires final batter for save
Shawn Kelley struck out the only batter he faced to pick up his fifth save of the season in Thursday's win over the Giants.

Advice: Jonathan Papelbon started the inning but was pulled after allowing a one-out single and walk. Oliver Perez came on to retire two of the three batters he faced while allowing one inherited runner to score. Kelley then finished things off with a strikeout of Angel Pagan. Nationals manager Dusty Baker was non-committal after the game when asked about his ninth-inning situation, but Kelley may now be the favorite for saves. Of course, there's a pretty decent chance the Nats will acquire a reliever over the weekend. Today, 5:39 am
  • Gillaspie singles twice in loss to Nationals
Conor Gillaspie went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles in Thursday's loss to the Nationals.

Advice: The Giants could only find five hits as a team against a locked in Tanner Roark. Gillaspie had himself two of those. He also picked up an RBI on a second-inning ground out. That makes three consecutive games in which he has driven in a run. Despite his recent quiet success, there is no true fantasy intrigue here. Gillaspie has just four home runs and 17 RBI for the season as a whole. Yesterday, 10:57 pm
  • Valbuena (hamstring) unlikely to play Friday
Astros manager A.J. Hinch said that Luis Valbuena (hamstring) is not likely for Friday's game against the Tigers.

Advice: This echoes what Hinch was saying prior to Wednesday's game with the Yankees. The Astros have a scheduled day off on Thursday. Valbuena actually might have been sat on Friday even if he was healthy, as the Tigers will be tossing out left-hander Matt Boyd and Valbuena is slugging just .400 against southpaws (as compared to .479 vs right-handed pitchers). Hinch has not ruled out playing Valbuena in one or both of the final two games of the weekend series. Wednesday, 8:52 pm

  • Valbuena (hamstring) to be eased along by HOU
Astros manager A.J. Hinch said that Luis Valbuena's hamstring injury is "something that's going to take a couple days [to recover from]."

Advice: Valbuena suffered a right hamstring strain while running down the first base line in the second inning of Tuesday's loss to the Yankees. The Astros have an off day on Thursday. Beyond that, Hinch said that because the Tigers will start southpaw Matt Boyd on Friday, the Astros might sit him until Saturday. Valbunea shouldn't be considered in the clear quite yet, but with the way the team is talking, he might just be able to avoid a trip to the disabled list. Hamstrings, of course, are notoriously balky. Wednesday, 5:14 pm

  • Gillaspie rocks solo homer in loss to Reds
Conor Gillaspie went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's loss to the Reds.

Advice: Gillaspie connected for a solo home run off Dan Straily in the third inning. That would stand as the Giants' only run of the contest. It was Gillaspie's fourth dinger of the 2016 campaign. In addition to that quartet of taters, the 29-year-old third baseman is slashing .250/.298/.405 and has driven in 16 runs in 116 at-bats. He holds no fantasy value. Wednesday, 4:17 pm
  • Ramiro Pena scratched with sore groin
Ramiro Pena was scratched from the Giants' lineup on Wednesday due to a sore groin.

  • Brett Anderson (back) cleared for rehab start
Brett Anderson (back) is scheduled to go three innings in a rehab start Thursday with High-A Rancho Cucamonga.

Advice: It will be his rehab debut, and he'll probably have another 3-4 minor league outings on top of it before the Dodgers consider him a realistic option for their starting rotation. Anderson has been out all season following March back surgery. He is aiming to make his first start for Los Angeles in mid-August. Wednesday, 10:26 am

  • Phils want top prospect for Jeremy Hellickson
Rival executives talking to the Phillies about Jeremy Hellickson tell ESPN's Jayson Stark that the club is asking for "one of your top five prospects."

Advice: The quality of that top five obviously varies greatly from organization to organization, but the point is the Phillies want something significant in return for the 29-year-old right-hander, who boasts a 3.65 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 107/28 K/BB ratio in 125 2/3 innings this season. Stark says Philadelphia would be content with getting a draft pick when Hellickson departs via free agency this winter. He is probably well on his way to a qualifying offer, and he is a Scott Boras client. Wednesday, 10:22 am
  • Valbuena leaves game due to hamstring strain
Luis Valbuena suffered a right hamstring strain on Tuesday night against the Yankees.

Advice: Valbuena pulled up lame while running to first base in the bottom of the second inning. Houston is calling him day-to-day, but a 15-day disabled list stint seems possible. That would open more playing time at third base for top prospect Alex Bregman, who served as the Astros' designated hitter on Tuesday after starting at the hot corner in his MLB debut on Monday. • Valbuena exits game with apparent leg injury
Luis Valbuena left Tuesday's game against the Yankees with a right leg injury.

Advice: Valbuena fell while running to first base in the bottom of the second inning. He looked to be in a good amount of pain as he limped to the home dugout at Minute Maid Park. Valbuena was starting at third base in this one, with top prospect Alex Bregman serving as the Astros' DH. Marwin Gonzalez moved to the hot corner and Jason Castro took over at first base. • Fowler (soreness) drives in run in return
Dexter Fowler (soreness) went 1-for-5 with an RBI single and a run scored in his return to the lineup Monday against the Mariners.

Advice: Fowler was held out of the starting lineup Sunday due to general soreness, but he felt well enough to serve as the designated hitter for Monday's interleague contest. Cubs manager Joe Maddon told Carrie Muskat of that he's still getting in "baseball shape" after his hamstring injury, so he should be back up to speed soon. Tuesday, 6:17 am
  • Brett Eibner goes 0-for-4 in loss
Brett Eibner went 0-for-4 on Monday and is 0-for-15 since the All-Star break.

Advice: Eibner got off to a nice start for the Royals, hitting .304/.361/.571 in his first 56 at-bats of the year. He's not contributing these last 10 days, though, and he's probably going to be sent down when Lorenzo Cain comes off the DL. Monday, 8:50 pm

  • Luis Valbuena reaches four times
Luis Valbuena went 3-for-3 with a walk Monday in the loss to the Yankees.

Advice: Valbuena reached base safely four times in four plate appearances. The rest of the Astros did so four times in 31 plate appearances in the 2-1 loss. That's why Valbuena won't be losing his starting job to Alex Bergman or Yuleski Gurriel this month. He'll sit against a lot of lefties, but he'll be in there at first base or DH against righties. • Jeremy Hellickson goes six scoreless Monday
Jeremy Hellickson improved his trade stock by holding the Marlins to one hit over six shutout frames in Monday's 4-0 victory.

Advice: Hellickson recorded just one strikeout, but he also permitted only one hit and one walk. He had thrown just 70 pitches through six innings, but the Phillies elected to pinch-hit for him in the top of the seventh when they had a scoring opportunity. Hellickson will go into the trade deadline having yielded just one run over 14 frames. If he's not dealt by then, he'll get the Braves this weekend. Monday, 8:09 pm
  • Brett Anderson (back) nearing rehab games
Brett Anderson (back) could begin a minor league rehab assignment Thursday.

Advice: Anderson made it through another simulated game Sunday without issue. The left-hander has been on the disabled list all year following March back surgery and will likely require 3-4 minor league rehab starts. A mid-August season debut appears possible. Sunday, 3:03 pm

  • Fowler sitting out with 'general soreness'
Dexter Fowler is not in Sunday's lineup due to "general soreness," according to Cubs manager Joe Maddon.

Advice: He could just be a little sore after playing two straight games following a disabled list stint. Fowler should be ready to go on Monday. Jason Heyward is in center field, Ben Zobrist is in left and Tommy La Stella is at second base Sunday. Sunday, 10:03 am
  • Shawn O'Malley starting at shortstop Saturday
Shawn O'Malley is starting at shortstop and batting ninth for the Mariners on Saturday.

Advice: He gets the challenge of facing Jays' knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. With Ketel Marte on the disabled list, the door is open for O'Malley to see some extra time in the infield over the next week or so. Saturday, 7:08 am
  • Mariners recall David Rollins from Triple-A
Mariners recalled LHP David Rollins from Triple-A Tacoma.

Advice: Rollins returns to the Mariners to provide an extra arm from the left side in the bullpen. As they have been so many times this season, expect his stay with the M's to be relatively short. Saturday, 6:20 am

  • Fowler has monster game in return from DL
Dexter Fowler celebrated his return from the disabled list by going 3-for-4 with a home run, a walk, three RBI, and two runs scored in Friday’s win over the Brewers.

Advice: Fresh off missing a month and change with a hamstring injury, Fowler didn’t need any time to shake the rust. He made an immediate impact by socking a leadoff homer against Jimmy Nelson before adding an RBI double one inning later. The 30-year-old faded a bit in June prior to the injury, but he still owns a cool .298/.405/.504 batting line on the year. Friday, 8:50 pm
  • Dexter Fowler (hamstring) back from the DL
Cubs activated OF Dexter Fowler from the 15-day disabled list.

Advice: Fowler's recovery from a strained right hamstring came along a little more slowly than expected, but he's ready to roll now. He's in center field and batting leadoff Friday against Jimmy Nelson and the Brewers. Friday, 2:55 pm
  • Fowler (hamstring) to join Cubs this weekend
Cubs GM Jed Hoyer said Dexter Fowler (hamstring) will rejoin the team this weekend in Milwaukee.

Advice: The exact day of his arrival is unclear, but it could be Friday for the opener of the three-game series. Fowler appeared in both games of a doubleheader Wednesday with Triple-A Iowa, going 1-for-5 with a double and a walk. The 30-year-old center fielder will return to a shiny .290/.398/.483 batting line. Thursday, 10:26 am
  • Fowler (hamstring) goes 1-for-5 in rehab
Dexter Fowler (hamstring) went 1-for-5 with a double and a walk in a doubleheader Wednesday with Triple-A Iowa.

Advice: Jorge Soler only played in the first game and went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts. Fowler should be ready to return to the Cubs' active roster this weekend if he can avoid a physical setback over the next couple of days. He's been on the disabled list since June 19 because of a right hamstring strain. Thursday, 7:08 am
  • Marlins showing interest in Hellickson
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Marlins are interested in a potential trade for Jeremy Hellickson.

Advice: Nothing imminent here. Rosenthal's report backs a Monday update from's Joe Frisaro who likewise relayed that the Marlins were intrigued by Hellickson. President of baseball operations Michael Hill got a personal taste of his work in Philadelphia on Wednesday, as he was in town to watch the hurler toss eight inning of one-run ball against his squad. Hellickson struck out eight in the contest. He holds a 3.84 ERA over 119 2/3 innings. FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that the Orioles are also interested in the 29-year-old right-hander. Wednesday, 8:24 pm
  • Hellickson yields one run in eight innings
Jeremy Hellickson struck out eight batters and held the Marlins to one run in eight innings to lead the Phillies to a 4-1 win on Wednesday.

Advice: He yielded five hits and no walks, with the only damage being a solo homer by Chris Johnson. The win lifts his record to 7-7 with a 3.84 ERA in 119 2/3 innings. After three poor seasons he has bounced back to fantasy relevancy this year. Wednesday, 7:21 pm
