  • Red Sox option Alex Hassan to AAA level
Red Sox optioned OF/1B Alex Hassan to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Advice: Hassan was in the major leagues for less than 24 hours. He got sent back down Thursday to clear a roster spot for Allen Craig, who was activated from the disabled list in a corresponding 25-man roster move.

  • Middlebrooks (hamstring) out of lineup Thurs.
Will Middlebrooks (hamstring) is out again Thursday.

Advice: The third baseman is still being bothered by tightness in his right hamstring. He's considered day-to-day.

  • Yankees' McCarthy hurls fourth career shutout
Brandon McCarthy pitched his fourth career shutout Thusday, allowing four hits and striking out eight in a 3-0 win over the Astros.

Advice: The game was played in 2:07, as McCarthy (107) and Dallas Keuchel (96) combined to throw 203 pitches while both notching complete games. McCarthy improved to 5-2 with a 1.90 ERA in eight starts for the Yankees. His previous shutout came last year for the Diamondbacks in a 1-0 win over the Marlins.

  • Brett Gardner goes 0-for-4 against Astros
Brett Gardner went 0-for-4 as the Yankees' leadoff man Thursday against the Astros.

Advice: The slumping Gardner hasn't had a multihit game since Aug. 4, a homer since Aug. 3 or a steal since Aug. 1. That's a big reason why the Yankees have scored just 20 runs in his last 10 starts.

  • Giants recall George Kontos from Triple-A
Giants recalled RHP George Kontos from Triple-A Fresno.

Advice: Kontos will serve as the Giants' 26th man for their second game Thursday at Wrigley Field. The 29-year-old right-hander has a cool 3.00 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 21 innings this year in the majors.

  • Angels add Wade LeBlanc from Triple-A
Angels purchased the contract of LHP Wade LeBlanc from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Advice: LeBlanc is available out of the bullpen for now but could start in Garrett Richards' place on Monday against the Marlins. Richards is likely done for the season after suffering an ugly left knee injury Wednesday in Boston. LeBlanc is not a good fantasy bet.

  • Souza (shoulder) ready for rehab assignment
Steven Souza (shoulder) is expected to begin a rehab assignment Thursday with Low-A Hagerstown.

Advice: Souza will then probably move up to High-A Potomac over the weekend. He has been on the disabled list since August 10 because of a bruised left shoulder. An MRI taken last week showed no sort of structural damage.

  • Padres RHP prospect Wisler fans seven
Padres right-handed pitching prospect Matt Wisler struck out seven over seven innings on Wednesday, allowing five hits, two walks, and one run for Triple-A El Paso.

Advice: Wisler struggled after his initial promotion to the Triple-A Pacific Coast League, but he has done well as of late, putting up a 2.63 ERA and 8.4 K/9 while holding opposing batters to a .245/.286/.420 line over his last six starts. Wisler has the potential to be a solid No. 3 starter at the big league level, and his long-term fantasy value can only be increased by the friendly confines of San Diego's spacious Petco Park.

  • Rockies RHP prospect Gray lasts only 2 IP
Rockies right-handed pitching prospect Jon Gray allowed five hits and three runs over two innings, striking out two batters for Double-A Tulsa on Wednesday.

Advice: Gray has yet to put together a streak of good starts, and needed 68 pitches to get through two innings against the Arkansas Travelers, a team bereft of potential impact prospects. He has frontline potential, but there were rumors that Gray would be in Colorado before July and he has instead remained in Double-A.

  • Reds RHP prospect Stephenson hit hard
Reds right-handed pitching prospect Robert Stephenson allowed eight runs -- seven earned -- over four innings for Double-A Pensacola on Wednesday.

Advice: Stephenson gave up only six hits, but that included one double, one triple, and two home runs, as well as two walks and one hit batsman. He has struggled in Double-A, posting a 4.84 ERA and a 1.396 WHIP, compounded by his 4.9 BB/9 rate and opposing batters putting up a .193 isolated power mark. Stephenson has a solid 9.1 K/9, but this season has not gone as well as the Reds' front office would have hoped.

  • Marlins C prospect Realmuto with 3 hits, HR
Marlins prospect catcher J.T. Realmuto went 3-for-5 with a triple and a home run for Double-A Jacksonville on Wednesday, raising his season line to .293/.360/.455.

Advice: Realmuto has taken over the role of the third catcher for the Marlins, as he's already been given two quick cups of coffee in 2014. He has the potential to hit .280 with 15 home runs and a handful of stolen bases as a major league regular. He should return to the Marlins in September, though he may not receive much playing time.

  • Athletics 1B prospect Olson hits 36th homer
Athletics first base prospect Matt Olson went 2-for-4 with a home run and a walk for High-A Stockton on Wednesday.

Advice: Olson leads the California League and is third in all of minor league baseball with 36 home runs for the season. He has been white-hot in August, hitting .293/.424/.600 with five doubles and six home runs over 19 games, raising his overall season line to .254/.400/.543. The California League is hitter friendly, but Stockton is slightly slanted toward pitchers, which makes Olson's higher output at home (.253/.396/.589 with 21 homers) as opposed to on the road (.256/.405/.493 with 15 homers) all the more impressive. He won't be up until mid-2015 at the earliest, but he has the power to be among the home run leaders in the major leagues once he's established.

  • Cubs 3B prospect Kris Bryant hits 41st homer
Cubs third base prospect Kris Bryant went 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk on Wednesday for Triple-A Iowa.

Advice: Bryant now leads the minor leagues with 41 home runs, putting up a .336/.444/.684 slash line between Double-A and Triple-A. His bat is ready for the major leagues, but his defense is still a work in progress and his future defensive home remains up in the air. Bryant has MVP potential, and should be up in early 2015.

  • Hanigan (oblique) to resume rehab on Friday
Ryan Hanigan (oblique) is on track to resume his minor league rehab assignment this Friday.

Advice: Hanigan was stalled earlier this month by lingering soreness in his oblique. He's been out since July 9 and probably won't be cleared to return to the Rays until rosters expand on September 1. The veteran catcher has hit just .212/.309/.327 this season for the Rays.

  • Peavy (1-12 start to season) wins 2nd straght
Jake Peavy won his second straight start by allowing two runs on 10 hits over seven innings in Wednesday's victory over the Cubs.

Advice: Across from the artist formerly known as Edwin Jackson, the outcome was never in doubt. Peavy had a 4-0 lead before his big toe even touched the rubber, and he enjoyed an 8-1 lead when he strode to the mound to pitch the bottom of the fourth. He's now won two games in the past week after starting the season 1-12. With the NL-worst Rockies traveling to San Francisco to take on Peavy next week, the veteran has a decent chance to keep the good times rolling.

Red Sox recalled OF/1B Alex Hassan from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Advice: Hassan has hit .282/.373/.431 with eight home runs and 50 RBI in 104 games this season at Triple-A. He'll act as bench depth while Mike Napoli nurses a back injury.

  • Will Middlebrooks not in lineup Wednesday
Will Middlebrooks (hamstring) is not in Wednesday's lineup.

Advice: The Red Sox are calling him day-to-day after he exited Tuesday's contest with right hamstring tightness, but he figures to miss at least a couple games. Brock Holt is at third base Wednesday in Middlebrooks' place.

  • Will Middlebrooks leaves with tight hamstring
Will Middlebrooks left Tuesday's game versus the Angels with right hamstring tightness.

Advice: Middlebrooks tweaked the hamstring while beating outing a single in the fourth inning. The Red Sox are saying his removal was precautionary and he's considered day-to-day.

  • Will Middlebrooks exits with leg injury
Will Middlebrooks left Tuesday's game versus the Angels with an apparent leg injury.

Advice: Middlebrooks tweaked something after beating out an infield single. The Red Sox should provide an update on the third baseman's status shortly.

  • Kris Bryant (toe) doubles in return to I-Cubs
Cubs prospect Kris Bryant (toe) doubled and walked in his return to the Triple-A Iowa lineup Tuesday.

Advice: Bryant only missed a couple of days with a left big toe injury. The 22-year-old budding star has 40 home runs and 103 RBI in 126 games this season between the Double-A Tennessee Smokies and Triple-A Iowa Cubs. He should make his major league debut in early 2015.

  • Hanigan (oblique) to restart rehab assignment
Ryan Hanigan (oblique) is aiming to resume his minor league rehab assignment by the end of this week.

Advice: Hanigan has been on the disabled list since July 9 with an oblique strain and recently had a minor setback. But if all goes well from here on out, he could be back on the Rays' active roster by the end of this month. The veteran catcher has hit just .212/.309/.327 in his first season with Tampa Bay.

  • Marlins C prospect Realmuto with 2B, 3 SB
Marlins catching prospect J.T. Realmuto went 2-for-4 with a double, walk, and three stolen bases for Double-A Jacksonville on Monday.

Advice: Realmuto is hitting .293/.362/.444 with 24 doubles, four triples, and six home runs in Double-A this season, and has 17 stolen bases. He is an athletic catcher who has the potential to hit .280 with 15 home runs while stealing a handful of bases. His near-term role is muddled by Jarrod Saltalmacchia's being signed through the 2016 season, but the Marlins perpetual ability to trade established veterans has to give young players, much like Realmuto, a chance.

  • Bryant (toe) ready to return to Iowa lineup
Cubs third base prospect Kris Bryant expects to return to the Triple-A Iowa lineup on Tuesday.

Advice: Bryant sent a scare through the Cubs organization on Saturday when he had to leave a game at Iowa with pain in his left big toe. But an MRI came back negative on Sunday and he was able to do some running without issue on Monday. "I'm ready," Bryant told reporters after Monday's workout. The powerful 22-year-old is not expected to reach the majors until early 2015.

Cubs third base prospect Kris Bryant is considered day-to-day after being diagnosed with a bruised foot.

  • Top prospect Kris Bryant (toe) to undergo MRI
Cubs third base prospect Kris Bryant will undergo an MRI on his left big toe Sunday.

Advice: Bryant fouled a ball off the toe a few days ago at Triple-A Iowa and then aggravated the ailment on Saturday, forcing him from the game. X-rays proved to be inconclusive, but the Cubs are hoping to find out more from an MRI. Bryant, who leads minor league baseball with 40 home runs, is not expected to be promoted this season.

  • McCarthy pitches well in loss to Rays
Brandon McCarthy fell to the Rays on Friday after giving up four runs (two earned) over 6 1/3 innings of work.

Advice: McCarthy gave up two runs in the first inning and an error by Chase Headley to begin the seventh inning opened the door for two more to score. He struck out seven and walked one in the loss and now holds an impressive 2.30 ERA and 43/7 K/BB ratio in 43 innings over seven starts with the Yankees. Those in mixed leagues need to keep rolling with him.

  • Peavy gets first win since joining the Giants
Jake Peavy earned his first win as a member of the Giants in Wednesday's 7-1 defeat of the White Sox.

Advice: It was also his first victory since April 5. Peavy held the White Sox to four hits and three walks while fanning three. The only run he allowed was on an Adam Dunn solo shot in the top of the fourth inning. Peavy will take on the Cubs at Wrigley Field next week. He remains a risky fantasy streamer.

  • Bryant hits MiLB-leading 39th home run
Cubs prospect 3B Kris Bryant went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI on Tuesday for Triple-A Iowa.

Advice: The home run was Bryant's Minor League-leading 39th of the season, and the pair of RBI gives him an even 100 on the year. The 22-year-old slugger's production tailed off a bit in July, at least by his standards, but he's been red hot over his last 15 games, with a .373 batting average, six home runs and 13 RBI. The Cubs have tried to temper expectations regarding a potential September call-up, but with Arismendy Alcantara and Javier Baez already in the major leagues, and Jorge Soler likely to join them next month, it can't be ruled out. On the season, Bryant is batting .341/.448/.689 with 39 home runs, 33 doubles, 100 RBI and 15 stolen through 120 games.

  • Steven Souza has no structural damage
An MRI revealed no structural damage in Steven Souza's right shoulder.

Advice: He's nursing some inflammation in his AC joint, but the good news is that his rotator cuff is fine. "That banging into the wall got him pretty good," Nationals manager Matt Williams said. "He has some AC issues there, too. But we'll calm that down and get him back to work on his baseball stuff. All the tests turned out real good there."
