  • Mariners place Tom Wilhelmsen on 15-day DL
Mariners placed RHP Tom Wilhelmsen on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain.

Advice: His injury, as well as recent overuse of the bullpen, is the reason the M's needed to recall a couple of fresh arms on Saturday. The 32-year-old hurler has pitched well for the Mariners, registering a 3.20 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 15/7 K/BB ratio over 19 2/3 innings. Rotoworld.com Today, 12:31 pm

  • Mariners recall Pat Venditte from Triple-A
Mariners recalled SWP Pat Venditte from Triple-A Tacoma.

Advice: The switch-pitching reliever has been terrific since coming over in a trade from the Blue Jays, posting a 1.08 ERA and 11/3 K/BB ratio over 8 1/3 innings at Triple-A. He'll add much-needed depth to a depleted M's bullpen. Rotoworld.com Today, 12:29 pm
  • Giants recall Albert Suarez to start Saturday
Giants recalled RHP Albert Suarez from Triple-A Sacramento.

Advice: The 26-year-old hurler has appeared in 16 games for the Giants this season (six starts), compiling a 4.20 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 40/17 K/BB ratio. He could be worth a look as a streaming option against the Braves on Saturday. Rotoworld.com Today, 12:11 pm

  • Giants place Jake Peavy (back) on 15-day DL
Giants placed RHP Jake Peavy on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain.

Advice: The Giants had been hopeful he would recover in time to make his scheduled start on Saturday, as he was already filling in for the injured Matt Cain. Albert Suarez will start in his place against the Braves on Saturday. Rotoworld.com Today, 12:08 pm

  • Orioles designate Ondrusek for assignment
Orioles designated RHP Logan Ondrusek for assignment.

Advice: The right-hander had been optioned back to Triple-A Norfolk on Friday, but the club needed to open a spot on the 40-man roster for Julio Borbon on Saturday. He should clear waivers and continue to provide bullpen depth for the O's. Rotoworld.com Today, 9:13 am

  • Blue Jays designate Aaron Loup for assignment
Blue Jays designated LHP Aaron Loup for assignment.

Advice: Loup owns a troublesome 7.45 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 11/2 K/BB ratio over 9 2/3 innings with the Jays this season. He's likely to pass through waivers and continue to function as bullpen depth for the Jays. Rotoworld.com Today, 7:40 am

  • Blue Jays recall Bo Schultz from Triple-A
Blue Jays recalled RHP Bo Schultz from Triple-A Buffalo.

Advice: Schultz has been shuttled back and forth between Triple-A and the big leagues several times this season, but could be up to stay now with rosters set to expand in September. The 30-year-old right-hander owns a 3.00 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 7/2 K/BB ratio across 12 big league innings this season. Rotoworld.com Today, 7:38 am
  • Mike Montgomery strikes out five Dodgers
Mike Montgomery gave up three runs in five innings Friday against the Dodgers.

Advice: Montgomery kept the Cubs in the game despite allowing six hits, walking four and hitting a batter. It's unclear whether he'll get another start next week. We'd rather see Montgomery in the bullpen than in the rotation. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 11:06 pm
  • Bud Norris solid versus Cubs
Bud Norris yielded two runs in five innings Friday against the Cubs.

Advice: It was a decent bounce-back outing for Norris, who struggled last week in his first start off the DL and then pitched in relief Monday. He might be a swingman throughout September, depending on how the Dodgers' injured starters fare. If he pitches on four days' rest next time out, he'll be facing the Rockies at Coors, which is a matchup fantasy leaguers should want no part of. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 11:04 pm
  • Daniel Hudson takes blown save
Given the save chance Friday, Daniel Hudson took a blown save after giving up a run against the Reds.

Advice: At least it was just the one run, which is better than the previous Diamondbacks closers had done of late. Manager Chip Hale indicated that Hudson and Randall Delgado would be his preferred late-inning relievers after Enrique Burgos blew his most recent chance. Delgado pitched a scoreless eighth tonight, so perhaps he'll get the next save chance now. Still, Hudson probably deserves one more chance, since he had been on quite the roll of late. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 10:41 pm
  • Brandon Finnegan fans 12 Diamondbacks
Brandon Finnegan struck out 12 while allowing two runs in six innings Friday against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: This makes five quality starts in six outings for Finnegan, who, despite his recent success, entered the night as the NL leader in homers and walks allowed. He's making it tough on the Reds as they try to decide how to handle him in September. On the one hand, he's doing his best work of the season. On the other, he's thrown 40 more innings than he did last year. It's probably in his best interests to curtail his workload some. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 10:39 pm
  • Colome gives up back-to-back HRs vs. Astros
Alex Colome gave up back-to-back homers to blow a save and take the loss Friday against the Astros.

Advice: It was a night to forget for Colome. The Rays pulled ahead in the top of the ninth inning when Mikie Mahtook slugged a solo homer off Ken Giles, but Colome failed to retire a batter in the bottom of the frame. He gave up a leadoff homer to Carlos Correa to tie things up before Evan Gattis followed that up with a long walk-off homer. This was just Colome’s second blown save in 30 chances this season. He hadn’t allowed a run since July 23, so his job is secure. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 10:08 pm
  • Phelps struggles Friday against Padres
David Phelps was chased after giving up four runs (three earned) in 3 2/3 innings Friday against the Padres.

Advice: After turning in four straight promising starts since his return to the rotation, Phelps delivered a dud on Friday. He actually held the Padres hitless (with two walks) over the first three innings before things fell apart for him in a 24-pitch fourth inning. It was a disappointing performance for the 29-year-old considering the promising matchup, but he has the Mets and Phillies coming up next. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 9:20 pm
  • Alex Reyes to start for Cardinals on Saturday
Alex Reyes will make his first major league start on Saturday in place of Mike Leake, who is dealing with shingles.

Advice: The 21-year-old right-hander has been impressive in his time out of the Cardinals bullpen, posting a 13/4 K/BB ratio over 9 1/3 scoreless innings. He's worthy of a look in all formats for as long as he's in the rotation. He'll get the Athletics at home Saturday in a relatively juicy matchup. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 9:16 pm

  • Joe Smith to begin rehab assignment Saturday
Joe Smith (hamstring) will begin a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on Saturday.

Advice: The veteran right-hander has struggled in his limited time with the Cubs, allowing three runs on six hits and four walks over his 3 2/3 innings. He has been on the shelf since August 17 due to a strained hamstring. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 9:10 pm

  • Diaz notches five-out save vs. White Sox
Edwin Diaz notched a five-out save in Friday’s win over the White Sox.

Advice: Felix Hernandez began the eighth inning, but he got pulled after loading the bases. Diaz induced a fielder’s choice and a foul out to escape the jam before striking out the side swinging in the ninth. He needed just 17 pitches to get five outs. Diaz has looked more human recently, but this was a very encouraging performance for the rookie closer. The 22-year-old is 11-for-11 in save chances to go along with a 2.15 ERA and 69/13 K/BB ratio over 37 2/3 innings. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 8:53 pm
  • Ross Detwiler gives up three runs in loss
Ross Detwiler gave up three runs in 5 1/3 innings Friday in a loss to the Cardinals.

Advice: Since going eight scoreless against the Orioles on Aug. 10, Detwiler has given up 14 earned runs over 14 innings. The A's don't have anyone else they want to go to, so he'll remain in the rotation for now. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 8:38 pm
  • Dean tagged with six runs in loss
Pat Dean was tagged with six runs over three innings in a loss to the Blue Jays on Friday.

Advice: Not good. Dean gave up eight hits, but most of the damage came in the second inning, as he surrendered a two-run homer to Justin Smoak before Josh Donaldson slugged a three-run blast. The 27-year-old only got the call Friday because Hector Santiago was out with a bruised left thumb. They’ll have to hope he’s ready for his next turn. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 8:17 pm

  • Wright takes loss in return from DL
Steven Wright took the loss in his return from the disabled list Friday, giving up five runs over six innings against the Royals.

Advice: Wright really struggled with his command and control in the first inning and gave up all five runs in the process (via homers from Eric Hosmer and Alex Gordon). He settled down nicely from there, but the damage was done. The knuckleballer struck out just one batter on the night. He now owns a 3.18 ERA through 23 starts on the year and will square off against the Rays next week at home. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 7:47 pm
  • Cessa gives up three runs in win
Luis Cessa gave up three runs in six innings in Friday’s win over the Orioles.

Advice: Cessa held the Orioles’ lineup in check except for Manny Machado, who took him deep in the first and sixth innings. The rookie right-hander struck out five and walked one in the lopsided victory. Coming off back-to-back solid starts, Cessa will try to keep it going next week against the Royals on the road. • Sam Tuivailala optioned to Triple-A
Cardinals optioned RHP Sam Tuivailala to Triple-A Memphis.

Advice: Tuivailala holds a 9.00 ERA and 2.17 WHIP over nine relief appearances with the Cards this season. He has a big arm but lacks the command at this point to be successful at the big league level. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 10:02 am

  • Wright (shoulder) activated for Friday start
Red Sox activated RHP Steven Wright from the 15-day disabled list.

Advice: He'll rejoin the Red Sox' rotation on Friday against the Royals after missing three weeks with a jammed shoulder that he suffered while pinch-running. Wright has mostly faded the last couple months after a terrific start to the season, although he did throw a shutout in his last outing. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 9:10 am
  • Alex Wimmers called up from Triple-A
Twins purchased the contract of RHP Alex Wimmers from Triple-A Rochester.

Advice: A 2010 first-round pick, Wimmers' career got sidetracked due to injury and mechanical issues, but he's been solid this season after a full-time move to the bullpen with a 3.97 ERA and 50/24 K/BB ratio over 49 2/3 innings. He'll be used in middle relief. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 8:47 am
  • Report: Jeremy Jeffress arrested for DWI
Rebecca Lopez of WFAA-TV in Dallas reports that Jeremy Jeffress was arrested early Friday morning on suspicion of DWI.

  • Hudson moving into late-inning role with ARI
Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said late Wednesday that Daniel Hudson will likely be moved into a late-inning role.

Advice: Hale didn't officially anoint Hudson as the team's new closer, but it's a decent bet he gets the next save opportunity. Hudson earned his 17th hold of the season on Wednesday night against the Braves and has now gone 10 straight appearances without allowing a run after struggling badly in July. Enrique Burgos, meanwhile, has surrendered seven earned runs over his last three innings of work, including four earned Wednesday versus Atlanta. Hale also mentioned Randall Delgado as a possible late-inning guy for the stretch run. Arizona's bullpen is such a mess. Rotoworld.com Thursday, 6:14 am
  • Steven Wright (shoulder) expected back Fri.
Steven Wright (shoulder) threw a 60-pitch bullpen session Tuesday at Tropicana Field.

Advice: "Obviously see how [Wednesday] goes, but today, to get through that, it’s big," he said after the workout. "It’s still a little achy, but when I get out on the mound it doesn’t really bother me. I think it’s just something from not throwing consistently like I have been." Wright has been cleared to return to the Red Sox rotation this Friday against the Royals. The knuckleballer holds an impressive 3.01 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 123/51 K/BB ratio in 146 2/3 innings this season with Boston. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 3:56 pm
  • Wright (shoulder) on track to start Friday
Steven Wright (shoulder) will start Friday against the Royals if all goes well in his bullpen session Tuesday.

Advice: Wright threw off a mound on Sunday and said Monday that he's now pain-free. The knuckleballer hasn't pitched since his three-hit shutout against the Dodgers back on August 5. Clay Buchholz is expected to move back to the bullpen assuming Wright is cleared to return this weekend. Rotoworld.com Monday, 2:18 pm

  • Cessa tosses six shutout innings as Yanks win
Luis Cessa tossed six shutout innings while striking out five as the Yankees beat the Angels 5-1 on Saturday night.

Advice: He allowed just three base hits and one walk. It was his first major league start after making eight relief appearances. He is now 3-0 with a 4.01 ERA and 16/7 K/BB ratio in 24 2/3 innings. The 24-year-old is not a highly regarded prospect but pitched well at Triple-A this year. He has a decent track record in the minor leagues and might be worth a flyer in deep fantasy formats. Rotoworld.com Saturday, 11:03 pm
  • Montgomery allows one run over 4 1/3 innings
Mike Montgomery held the Rockies to one run over 4 1/3 innings Saturday.

Advice: Montgomery, joining the rotation with John Lackey on the shelf, struck out five and allowed just one hit, a solo homer in the fifth inning. He threw 60 pitches and was given the hook for pitch count reasons, certainly not because he was ineffective. With Lackey still sidelined, Montgomery will likely get at least one more turn in the rotation, which is slated to come Friday against the Dodgers. He's not a great streaming option, given the pitch-count limitations and opponent, but desperate owners may take a flyer. Rotoworld.com Saturday, 9:37 pm
  • Finnegan carries no-no into seventh, Reds win
Brandon Finnegan took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and settled for throwing seven shutout innings of work in an 11-1 beatdown of the Dodgers on Saturday.

Advice: Finnegan walked two and struck out eight, with Adrian Gonzalez' leadoff single in the seventh inning scuttling any chances of seeing history. Still, it was a dominant performance from a pitcher who has shown at points that he can be dominant as a major league starter. The win improved Finnegan to 8-9 with a 4.32 ERA and 1.37 WHIP through 25 starts. The southpaw will look for an encore performance Friday against the Diamondbacks. Rotoworld.com Saturday, 9:23 pm
  • Detwiler rocked for 10 hits, six runs by Sox
Ross Detwiler was knocked around again Saturday, allowing 10 hits and six runs over four innings in a loss to the White Sox.

Advice: After an unexpectedly impressive A's debut on August 10, he's been hit hard in his two subsequent starts. That's more in line with what was expected of the 30-year-old journeyman, who spent most of the first part of the season in the Indians' minor leagues. Detwiler now owns a 5.91 ERA over 10 appearances, including three starts, this season. An interleague date with the Cardinals is on tap for Friday. Rotoworld.com Saturday, 7:19 pm
  • Phelps fans nine Bucs over six scoreless
David Phelps struck out nine over six scoreless innings in a 3-1 Marlins victory over the Pirates on Saturday.

Advice: Phelps yielded just two hits while walking two in the contest, leaving the Pirates offense without an answer for most of the evening. The right-hander has now allowed just three runs in four starts since moving to the rotation in the beginning of August, lowering his season ERA to 2.28. Phelps has always been a slightly intriguing pitcher for his strikeout ability, and he can't be overlooked in deeper mixed leagues given recent results. Phelps will next take on the Padres on Friday. Rotoworld.com Saturday, 7:14 pm
  • Wright will throw off a mound on Sunday
Steven Wright (shoulder) will throw off a mound on Sunday.

Advice: He'll do the same thing on Tuesday and if all goes well, he'll be ready to return to the starting rotation. Wright injured his shoulder after pinch-running for David Ortiz in a game earlier this month. Clay Buchholz will move back to the pen when Wright is healthy. Rotoworld.com Saturday, 6:43 pm
  • Edwin Diaz records ninth save
Edwin Diaz picked up his ninth save despite walking three and giving up two runs Friday in the ninth against the Brewers.

Advice: There's no arguing with Diaz's stuff, but he doesn't always know where the ball is going and he's now had two very shaky outings in a row. Fortunately, he had a cushion in both of those appearances, and he's a perfect 9-for-9 in save chances since taking over the closer gig in Seattle. His job is safe. Rotoworld.com Friday, 11:35 pm
  • Norris struggles in return from DL
Bud Norris was far from sharp in his return from the disabled list on Friday against the Reds, giving up six runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Advice: Norris has been out all month with a mid-back strain. The veteran right-hander gave up seven hits (including a three-run homer to Joey Votto) and walked four. He was at 94 pitches before being pulled in the fourth inning. Norris has generally been up and down since being acquired from the Braves at the end of June. He’ll try to bounce back next week in an important matchup against the Giants. Rotoworld.com Friday, 8:56 pm
  • Steven Wright (shoulder) unlikely for Tuesday
Steven Wright (shoulder) will not rejoin the Red Sox' rotation on Tuesday as initially hoped.

Advice: Wright continues to feel better, but the decision has been made to have him throw another flat ground session this weekend rather than a bullpen session. It appears that Clay Buchholz will get another start in his place. Rotoworld.com Friday, 1:57 pm
  • Bud Norris activated for Friday start
Dodgers activated RHP Bud Norris from the 15-day disabled list.

Advice: Norris will rejoin the rotation on Friday against the Reds. He missed a couple weeks of action with a back injury but threw 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball during a rehab start to gain clearance to return to the majors. Rotoworld.com Friday, 1:25 pm
  • Wright (shoulder) to throw off mound Sunday
Steven Wright (shoulder) is slated to throw a bullpen session on Sunday.

Advice: He played catch again Thursday with no issues. Assuming Wright gets through his bullpen session Sunday without any problems, he'll rejoin the Red Sox' rotation on Tuesday in Tampa Bay. "Even over the past couple days he’s commented about further improvement, the way he’s feeling, so we’re still targeting Tuesday (as his next start)," manager John Farrell said. Rotoworld.com Friday, 5:52 am
  • McFarland (knee) to next pitch on Thursday
T.J. McFarland (knee) will pitch on Thursday as he continues his rehab assignment with High-A Frederick.

Advice: McFarland has been sidelined by left knee tendinitis for over a month. He continues to move along in his recovery and could return to the major league mound before the start of September. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 3:09 pm
  • Cubs place Joe Smith on 15-day disabled list
Cubs placed RHP Joe Smith on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain.

Advice: Smith has been a bust so far with the Cubs, yielding three earned runs on four walks and six hits over just 3 2/3 innings of work. He has a 4.14 ERA in 41 1/3 total innings this year. The veteran setup man will likely go on a lengthy minor league rehab assignment before returning to the Chicago bullpen. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 12:33 pm
