    • Yu Darvish allowed five runs -- four earned -- in six innings in a loss to the A's on Tuesday.
Advice: Even Darvish's bad starts aren't all that bad, as he still managed to strike out 10 A's batters. Still, you could tell he didn't have his best stuff, as he served up homers to John Jaso and Brandon Moss among his six hits allowed. He'll go again Sunday in St. Louis in an interleague matchup.

    • Yu Darvish wasn't involved in the decision after allowing one run in seven innings and striking out nine Blue Jays on Thursday.
Advice: Darvish was certainly more dominant than Esmil Rogers tonight, but it did him no good. It was a 1-1 game when he left, and the Jays immediately took a 3-1 lead afterwards. It's the fourth straight start in which Darvish has received a no-decision. He hasn't won since May 16.

    • Jordan Lyles spun seven innings of one-run ball in Tuesday's 10-1 victory over the Brewers.
Advice: Lyles permitted seven hits, didn't walk anyone and struck out five. It continues a run of excellent work from the young right-hander, as Lyles now boasts a 1.61 ERA over his last seven starts. He needs to be in fantasy lineups this weekend in Chicago against the Cubs.

    • Jordan Lyles struck out a career-high 10 in seven scoreless innings Wednesday against the Mariners.
Advice: Lyles previous high was eight strikeouts, done twice (both times against the Pirates). He gave up eight runs in a loss to Texas on May 12 and now eight earned runs in six starts since. Unfortunately, he's picked up wins in just two of those games. We're not optimistic that he'll keep it up, but he's certainly giving the Astros some hope for the future. After all, he's still just 22 years old.

    • Jarrod Parker allowed two runs over seven innings in a win against the Rangers on Tuesday.
Advice: Parker had a miserable start to the season but has been just as terrific recently, as he's now turned in a quality start in each of his last eight outings. The right-hander limited the Rangers to three hits and two walks in his seven innings on Tuesday, striking out four. The win finally evened his record at 6-6 after he was 1-5 at one point. He'll take on the Mariners Sunday in Seattle.

    • Jarrod Parker held the Yankees to two runs over eight frames in Thursday's 3-2 extra innings victory.
Advice: Parker served up a two-run homer to Robinson Cano in the first inning, but he managed to hold the Bombers scoreless over the next seven innings, striking out a pair on the day. After a rough start to the season that looked like it could result in a demotion, Parker has recorded seven straight quality starts, lowering his ERA from 7.34 to 4.45 in the process. He has a tough matchup in Texas next week.

    • Justin Verlander allowed five runs in five innings to take the loss against the Orioles on Tuesday.
Advice: Verlander didn't have his best night, as the Orioles got to him for two home runs among his seven hits allowed. He also walked four batters on the night. He'll likely be better his next time out, Sunday against the Red Sox.

    • Mets designated OF Collin Cowgill for assignment.
Advice: Cowgill had some chances with the Mets but wound up batting just .180. He's had success in the minors, though, and could draw some interest on waivers.

    • Jason Vargas whiffed a season-best nine batters and surrendered a mere two runs over seven innings in Monday's 11-3 win against the Mariners.
Advice: Vargas allowed four hits and a walk to his former club. Monday's strikeouts are clearly a bonus for owners -- Vargas has struck out about six batters per nine innings this year -- but Vargas has established himself as a rotation stalwart in his first season in LA. He's now 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA.

    • Brandon Crawford left Tuesday's game against the Padres with sprains of his index and middle fingers on his right hand.
Advice: Crawford suffered the ailment during a stolen base attempt in the second inning. It's not clear at this point how serious it is. The Giants should have an update on his status after the game.

    • Astros optioned OF Jimmy Paredes to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Advice: Paredes was sent down in order to make room for Justin Maxwell's return from the disabled list. It was a fairly easy call, as the 24-year-old is hitting just .190 in 31 games this season and lost playing time to Trevor Crowe in recent weeks.

    • Michael Morse is not in the Mariners' lineup Tuesday due to his nagging right quad injury.
Advice: Morse originally suffered the injury in late May, and he's been unable to totally shake it. The M's have admitted that they would have placed him on the DL earlier had they not been dealing with other injuries, and they're probably wishing they would have gone ahead and done it, anyway. Morse was out testing the quad prior to Tuesday's game and is hoping to be back in the lineup soon.

    • Michael Morse (quad) returned to the Mariners' lineup Friday.
Advice: Morse was scratched from Wednesday's lineup due to ongoing issues with his right quad, but was able to return following the Mariners' off-day. He finished 1-for-3 with a double and is batting just .154 (2-for-13) over his last seven games.

    • Jonathan Papelbon earned his 14th save of the season by working a scoreless ninth against the Nationals on Tuesday.
Advice: After blowing his first save of the year his last time out, Papelbon rebounded to convert his next opportunity with relative ease. Papelbon's name has been thrown around as someone who might draw interest at the trade deadline, and he's doing his part, owning a 1.69 ERA and 0.71 WHIP through 26 2/3 innings.

  • Mon, Jun 17
    • Jonathan Papelbon took his first blown save of the year when he gave up a solo homer to the Nationals' Chad Tracy on Monday.
Advice: Papelbon was a perfect 13-for-13 this season before missing inside to Tracy tonight. It wasn't much more than a 340-foot flyball, but it was well placed down the line at Citizens Bank. Papelbon ended up getting the win anyway after the Phillies scored in the bottom of the ninth.

    • Brian McCann went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts Friday against the Giants.
Advice: McCann was red-hot after returning from shoulder surgery, but he's hitting just .130 (3-for-23) with eight strikeouts over his last eight games and hasn't had an extra-base hit since June 3. We'd stay the course with him in shallow mixed leagues, though.

    • Rays manager Joe Maddon spoke to Alex Cobb (concussion), who said there's no timetable for his return.
Advice: Cobb was diagnosed with a concussion after he was hit in the head by a line drive on Saturday and is currently on the 7-day disabled list. He'll have to be cleared by MLB before returning to action and Maddon isn't ready to say for sure when that might be. It could be a lengthy absence.

    • Alex Cobb (concussion) will not travel with the Rays on their upcoming seven-game road trip.
Advice: Cobb was diagnosed with a mild concussion at Bayfront Medical Center after being hit in the head by an Eric Hosmer line drive Saturday at Tropicana Field. He has been placed on the 7-day disabled list and will miss at least one turn in the Rays' starting rotation. The young right-hander has registered a fantastic 3.01 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 76/23 K/BB ratio in 83 2/3 innings this season.

    • Rays placed RHP Alex Cobb on the 7-day disabled list with a concussion.
Advice: The news is all good with Cobb, as he "only" has a mild concussion and will be released from the hospital Sunday. Still, it's no surprise that the Rays are playing it cautiously and disabling him. There's no timetable for when he'll rejoin the rotation.

    • Jeremy Hellickson told reporters that Alex Cobb was "acting normal" in the hospital on Saturday night.
Advice: "He's the same old Cobb right now," said Hellickson. "He's laughing and joking." Cobb was carted off the field on a stretcher Saturday after taking an Eric Hosmer line drive off the right side of his head. The right-hander has been diagnosed with a "mild" concussion and will remain at Bayfront Medical Center overnight for observation. He seems likely to sit out for at least a week.

    • Jacob Turner allowed two runs on six hits over five innings Monday against the Diamondbacks.
Advice: He struck out five and walked three. The former first-round pick has only allowed six earned runs in four starts, posting a 2.16 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over 25 innings. Turner has only one win to show for his efforts, however, an unfortunate occupational hazard of pitching in South Florida.

    • Nelson Cruz homered twice, doubled and knocked in four runs as the Rangers beat the A's 8-7 on Monday.
Advice: Cruz homered off Dan Straily in the fourth and Jesse Chavez in the fifth, giving him 18 bombs for the year. Only Chris Davis (24) and Miguel Cabrera (19) have more in the AL. If Cruz stays healthy, his career high of 33 homers is probably going down.

    • Indians recalled 3B Lonnie Chisenhall from Triple-A Columbus.
Advice: It's well deserved, as Chisenhall has been red-hot since his demotion last month, batting .390 with six home runs, 26 RBI, and a 1.132 OPS over 27 games. The 24-year-old has struggled at the major league level, but he should see regular playing time at third base in the short-term. Put him on your radar in deeper mixed leagues.

    • Chris Archer surrendered four runs -- three earned -- in 4 2/3 innings to take the loss in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader.
Advice: Archer wasn't affected by the rain delay; in fact, it happened right after he was removed from the game. The loss dropped Archer to 1-3 with a 5.03 ERA. It's not looking good for his chances of keeping his rotation spot if David Price and Alex Cobb can both pull off successful returns in early July.

Advice: Delgado is starting for the Snakes on Tuesday night against the Marlins. He has a troubling 5.91 ERA and 57/35 K/BB ratio in 64 innings this season at the Triple-A level and can't be trusted in standard fantasy leagues.

Advice: He'll take the rotation spot of Tyler Skaggs, who was sent down to the minors last week. Delgado has made one appearance with the Diamondbacks this season and owns a 5.91 ERA and 57/35 K/BB ratio in 64 innings over 13 starts at the Triple-A level. Advice: Miller was examined by trainers after stretching out his calf on the mound with one out in the fifth. He stayed in and retired the next two hitters but was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the frame. • Edinson Volquez allowed four runs on six hits and a walk over five innings in his start Monday against the Giants.
Advice: Volquez (5-5, 5.84 ERA) struck out six in the no-decision. The right-hander occasionally shows his talent in mixed-league worthy performances, such as his last start against the Braves (one run over seven innings). Far too often, however, he turns in frustrating performances such as Monday's or gets outright shelled. He's a fringy NL-only pitcher.
