    • Vizquel has agreed to $1,375,000, one-year contract with the Chicago White Sox.
Advice: The 42-year-old Vizquel is an 11-time Gold Glove winner and has played mostly shortstop during 21 major league seasons. He figures to add depth to Chicago's young infield.
      (STATS, Inc.)
    • INF Omar Vizquel proved last season he could handle a utility infield role when he hit .266 for the Texas Rangers and provided his usual sterling defense. The White Sox were suitably impressed and signed him to a one-year, $1.375 million contract. Chicago has young players at both middle-infield spots and third base, and Vizquel figures to be a good mentor as well as a quality backup. He will be playing for another Venezuelan (and a former shortstop), manager Ozzie Guillen.

Vizquel, who will be 43 in April, has played 21 major league seasons. Last year he was in a utility role with the Texas Rangers, playing shortstop, third base and second base while appearing in 62 games. He batted .266.

      (Yahoo! Sports)
    • Griffey stands to earn nearly $4 million from the Seattle Mariners next season. According to contract figures obtained by The Associated Press on Monday, Griffey's deal signed this month to return to his original team for one more season as a 40-year-old calls for a $2.35 million base salary for 2010.
Advice: Baseball's active home run leader would earn $3.9 million if he again has at least 400 plate appearances, Seattle has an increased home attendance of 2.5 million fans and Griffey again does not go on the disabled list while remaining on the roster for the entire season. Griffey earned $3.15 million in 2009. That included $2 million in base pay plus $1.15 million of a potential $3 million in bonuses.

The 31-year-old, who is scheduled to make $8 million in the final year of his contract in 2010, was cool to the idea last fall after regressing defensively during the 2009 season, but the team appears ready to move Guzman and give Ian Desmond a shot to be the full-time shortstop.
