  • Wilson Ramos powers Nationals past Giants
Wilson Ramos clobbered a solo home run in the sixth inning on Sunday, powering the Nationals to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Giants.

Advice: His blast off George Kontos broke a 1-1 and gave the Nationals a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The hard-hitting backstop even provided a valuable insurance run with an RBI single in the eighth inning. He finished the night 2-for-3 plus a walk and scored a pair of runs. He's now hitting .266/.294/.411 with eight homers and 38 RBI on the season.

  • Joseph hits two-run double in winning effort
Caleb Joseph went 1-for-4 with a two-run double in Sunday's win over the White Sox.

Advice: Joseph put the Orioles up 4-0 with his two-run double in the sixth inning, then capped off a four-run seventh inning with a run-scoring ground out. In 181 at-bats this season, he's slashing .238/.312/.376 with five homers and 24 RBI. Considering his limited at-bats, it's been a productive enough season, though there's no fantasy intrigue here.

  • Cody Stanley goes 5-for-6 with four RBI
Cardinals C prospect Cody Stanley lifted his average 25 points with a five-hit effort Saturday for Triple-A Memphis.

Advice: He went 5-for-6 with four singles and a double. Saturday was Stanley's first multi-hit game since May 28. His previous career-high in hits was four set August 8, 2014 while playing for Double-A Springfield. Stanley had been just one for his last 17 before Saturday. The 26-year-old made his major league debut earlier this season, singling off Jonathan Broxton for his first big league hit.

  • Tim Federowicz (knee) close to rehab games
Tim Federowicz (knee) will begin a rehab assignment around the All-Star break.

Advice: Working his way back from surgery to repair the meniscus in his right knee, Federowicz will need most, if not all, of his 20-day rehab allotment. He could be an option for the Padres in early August.

  • John Jaso (wrist) could return this week
Rays manager Kevin Cash said Sunday that John Jaso (wrist) could "possibly" rejoin the club in Kansas City early this week.

Advice: Jaso has batted .286/.348/.381 over six rehab games to this point. It's unclear whether he'd be ready to play regularly upon his activation, but the 31-year-old would figure to see regular starts in the designated hitter spot.

  • Matt Wieters sitting out on Sunday

  • Derek Norris not in Sunday's lineup

  • Salvador Perez sitting out on Sunday
Salvador Perez is not in the Royals' lineup Sunday.

Advice: It's a rare day off for Perez. Drew Butera is filling in behind the plate.
  • Yan Gomes not in Sunday's lineup
Yan Gomes is absent from the Indians' lineup Sunday.

Advice: He's just getting a breather. Roberto Perez will be behind the plate with Gomes out.

  • Derek Norris nursing AC join sprain
Derek Norris was in the Padres' lineup on Saturday despite being diagnosed with an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder.

Advice: Norris suffered the injury on Friday when he collided with Cardinals first baseman Xavier Scruggs. He stayed in that game and it appears the catcher will continue to attempt to play through the ailment. "They classified it as an AC sprain," interim manager Pat Murphy said Saturday. "He was adamant about being in there. I think he's going to go through periods where he's sore. The doctors say it can't get any worse. They thought he'd be a lot more sore today."

  • Cubs replace Ross (concussion) with Taylor Teagarden
Cubs purchased the contract of C Taylor Teagarden from Triple-A Iowa.

Advice: The Cubs need catching depth with David Ross (concussion) on the 7-day disabled list. Teagarden has done a nice job in Triple-A this year, batting .294 with 19 RBI in 43 games for the I-Cubs. He'll backup Miguel Montero behind the plate.
    Saturday, 1:24 pm
  • Concussion sends David Ross to disabled list
Cubs placed C David Ross on the 7-day concussion disabled list.

Advice: The move was made retroactive to July 2. Ross took a foul ball off his mask Wednesday against the Mets. Taylor Teagarden was called up to take his roster spot.

  • Mike Zunino not in Mariners lineup Saturday
Mike Zunino is not in the Mariners starting lineup on Saturday.

Advice: It's nothing more than a routine day of rest for the backstop, being a day game after a night game. Jesus Sucre will draw the start behind the dish and bat ninth against Kendall Graveman and the Athletics.
    Saturday, 11:10 am
  • Brian McCann not in Yankees lineup Saturday
Brian McCann is not in Yankees starting lineup on Saturday.

Advice: It has become commonplace for Yankees manager Joe Girardi to rest McCann on Saturday when the Yankees play an afternoon game following a night game. Friday night's hero will step aside and John Murphy will work behind the plate for the Bombers and bat seventh on Saturday.
    Saturday, 8:20 am
  • Alex Avila starting at first base on Saturday
Alex Avila is starting at first base for the Tigers on Saturday in place of the injured Miguel Cabrera.

Advice: Avila will bat fifth for the Tigers on Saturday. It isn't quite clear yet how the Tigers plan to manage the first base position in Cabrera's absence. Jefry Marte was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Saturday, but they may not want to throw him right in against knuckleballer R.A. Dickey.

  • Brian McCann belts walkoff three-run homer
Brian McCann belted a walkoff three-run home run in the 11th inning on Friday, propelling the Yankees to a 7-5 come-from-behind victory against the Rays.

Advice: The Yankees were on the ropes a couple of times in the ballgame but never stopped fighting. They trailed 3-0 heading into the eighth inning where Mark Teixeira connected on a three-run homer to tie the game and force extra innings, then trailed 5-3 in the 11th before McCann's heroic blast against Steve Geltz. It was the veteran backstop's lone hit in five at-bats on the night and he also drew a walk. He has been one of the best offensive catchers in the league this season, slashing a healthy .264/.333/.477 with 13 long balls and 52 RBI.
    Friday, 8:55 pm
  • Wieters strikes out twice in loss to CWS
Matt Wieters went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts in Friday's loss to the White Sox.

Advice: Wieters played poorly, but the same can be said for the entire Oriole squad, as the team did not score in the game. Coming off of major elbow surgery, Wieters is hitting .238/.265/.492 with three homers and 10 RBI over 63 at-bats. These numbers are very much in line with his hitting prior to the injury, though the on-base percentage should rise as the season moves along. So far, so good.
    Friday, 8:01 pm
  • Alex Avila activated from disabled list
Tigers activated C Alex Avila from the 15-day disabled list.

Advice: Avila missed nearly two months of action with a left knee issue. He returns to a .200/.342/.317 batting line with two homers across 22 games this season.
    Friday, 12:25 pm
  • Wilson Ramos absent from Friday's lineup
Wilson Ramos is not in the Nationals' lineup Friday.

Advice: It's just a day off. Jose Lobaton is behind the plate while Ramos rests.
    Friday, 11:34 am
  • Ramos has RBI single in loss
Wilson Ramos went 2-for-4 with an RBI single in Thursday's loss to the Braves.

Advice: His run-scoring single tied the game at 1-1 in the seventh, but the Braves went on to win in the ninth inning. Ramos has managed to stay healthy this season while batting .258 with seven home runs and 35 RBI over 61 games, which is good enough for him to be relevant in mixed leagues. The lack of power has been a disappointment, but given how many ground balls he hits, perhaps it shouldn't come as a big surprise.

  • Grandal gets rest against D'backs Wednesday
Yasmani Grandal is not in the Dodgers' lineup against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

Advice: Grandal, a switch-hitter who hits significantly better from the left side, will sit this one out against southpaw Robbie Ray. A.J. Ellis will catch Brett Anderson for the Dodgers in Grandal's place.
    Wednesday, 3:37 pm
  • Matt Wieters sitting out on Wednesday
Matt Wieters is not in the Orioles' lineup Wednesday.

Advice: Wieters remains unable to catch on back-to-back days. Joseph is behind the dish.
    Wednesday, 12:17 pm
  • Yan Gomes getting some rest Wednesday
Yan Gomes is not in the Indians' lineup Wednesday.

Advice: It's just a routine day of rest. Roberto Perez is catching with Gomes out.

  • Grandal plates four as Dodgers beat DBacks
Yasmani Grandal went 2-for-5 with a two-run double and a two-run home run in Tuesday's 10-inning win against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Grandal opened the scoring with a two-run home run off of Rubby De La Rosa in the second inning. He added necessary insurance in the 10th inning with a two-run double to make it a 6-3 game. Grandal has homered in back-to-back games, giving him 12 on the season along with 31 RBI and a .269/.380/.497 triple-slash line.
    Tuesday, 10:52 pm
  • Gomes' big night aids in Indians win vs. Rays
Yan Gomes went 3-for-5 with a double and a solo home run as the Indians topped the Rays 7-1 on Monday.

Advice: Gomes doubled to lead off the second inning and later came around to score the Indians' second run in the second inning. He drilled a solo home run to left-center in the eighth off of reliever Kirby Yates to add some insurance. The catcher has battled injuries throughout the year, limiting him to a .211/.226/.330 batting line with three home runs and nine RBI in 115 plate appearances.
    Monday, 7:15 pm
  • Brian McCann getting a breather Monday
Brian McCann is not in the Yankees' lineup Monday.

Advice: It's just a day off. John Ryan Murphy is behind the plate while McCann rests.
    Monday, 3:37 pm
  • Matt Wieters not starting Monday vs. Texas
Matt Wieters is not in the Orioles' lineup Monday versus the Rangers.

Advice: He still isn't ready to play back-to-back games. Caleb Joseph will start behind the plate and bat eighth. Wieters should be back for Tuesday's game.
    Monday, 12:13 pm
  • Derek Norris goes deep twice in losing effort
Derek Norris blasted a pair of home runs on Sunday, but it wasn't enough for the Padres to overcome the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Norris blasted a two-run shot off Diamondbacks starter Chase Anderson in the fourth inning then tagged him again for a solo shot in the sixth. The hard-hitting backstop finished the day 2-for-4 and is now slashing .246/.293/.446 with 11 homers and 45 RBI on the season.
    Jun 28, 6:36 pm
  • Salvador Perez hits 12th homer
Salvador Perez hit his 12th homer and drove in a run on a groundout Sunday against the Orioles.

Advice: With the groundout, Perez drove in a baserunner for the first time since way back on June 24; he had six homers and six RBI in the five weeks since. Perez did it again later on the homer, which was a two-run shot. He now has 33 RBI to go along with his 12 homers this season.
    Jun 28, 5:12 pm
  • Matt Wieters sitting out first game Sunday
Matt Wieters is not in the Orioles' lineup for the first game of Sunday's doubleheader versus the Indians.

Advice: Wieters isn't catching back-to-back games yet, so obviously he was going to have to sit out one of Sunday's contests. Expect him back out there for the night cap. Caleb Joseph is behind the plate for the first game.
    Jun 28, 8:02 am
  • McCann hits grand slam, Yankees top Astros
Brian McCann went 2-for-4 with a grand slam as the Yankees outlasted the Astros 9-6 on Saturday.

Advice: McCann took Astros starter Brett Oberholtzer deep for the salami in the first inning. The homer was McCann's 12th of the year and his third in the last five games. His good afternoon has his line up to .274/.341/.489 with 49 RBI. That's good for fifth-most RBI in the American League.
    Jun 27, 5:20 pm
  • Avila begins minor league rehab assignment
Alex Avila (knee) began a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Friday, going 1-for-3 and catching for five innings.

Advice: He'll serve as the designated hitter in Saturday's game before getting back behind the dish on Sunday. He's likely to remain on his rehab assignment for a week or two to get his timing back, having been on the shelf since May 7. With James McCann excelling as the Tigers starting catcher, Avila will probably face a time share when he returns.
    Jun 27, 5:58 am
  • John Jaso (wrist) ready for rehab assignment
John Jaso (wrist) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Charlotte on Saturday.

Advice: Jaso finally turned a corner recently with his ailing left wrist and is ready for game action now. It's not clear how many rehab games he'll need, but given that he's been sidelined since Opening Day it figures to be quite a few. Fantasy owners probably shouldn't count on him being back until the start of the second half.
    Jun 26, 1:20 pm
    60-Day DL
  • Yasmani Grandal sitting again on Friday
Yasmani Grandal is not in the Dodgers' lineup Friday.

Advice: It's the second straight game he's been on the bench. Grandal isn't suffering from any known injury, so it appears the club is just wanting to go with A.J. Ellis behind the plate.
