    • Adam Rosales hit a go-ahead homer off James Shields in the eighth in Oakland's 2-1 defeat of Kansas City on Friday.
Advice: The A's had been going with Eric Sogard against righties and Rosales against lefties, but Rosales drew the assignment against Shields tonight and came through with the big blast. As poorly as Sogard has hit, the A's will probably go with Rosales regularly for now.

    • Yankees acquired INF Reid Brignac from the Rockies for cash considerations.
Advice: Brignac made the Rockies' Opening Day roster, but was designated for assignment on Thursday after he batted just .250/.294/.375 in 53 plate appearances. The former top prospect is capable of playing multiple infield positions and will serve in a utility role with the Yankees.

    • Rockies designated INF Reid Brignac for assignment.
Advice: Brignac batted only .250/.294/.375 with the Rox. It's possible the versatile former top prospect will attract some attention on waivers.

    • Stephen Drew (back) is not in Saturday's lineup.
Advice: Drew played through a back issue on Friday and the Red Sox don't want to risk it again. The injury is not considered serious, though, and Drew will try to return on Sunday.

    • Erick Aybar went 0-for-4 in Friday's loss and is just 11-for-51 this month.
Advice: That .216 average is also his on-base percentage for the month, since his one walk this season came on April 30. He's also 0-for-1 stealing bases this month. Aybar is only back in the leadoff spot because Peter Bourjos is hurt. He'll probably be dropped to seventh or lower once Bourjos is activated.

    • Erick Aybar (hamstring) is back in the Angels' lineup Tuesday.
Advice: Aybar hasn't played since he left Thursday's game with right hamstring tightness, but he's obviously feeling much better. He returns to a .273/.290/.348 batting line with one stolen base.

    • Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Erick Aybar (hamstring) will be back in the lineup on Tuesday.
Advice: Aybar hasn't played since he left Thursday's game with right hamstring tightness, but he's available off the bench Monday and should be back in there Tuesday. Brendan Harris is at shortstop again Monday.

    • Marco Scutaro went 3-for-5 with an RBI single and a run scored Friday against the Rockies.
Advice: Ho-hum, just another multi-hit night for the hottest hitter in the game. Scutaro now has a 16-game hitting streak and has raised his batting average from .215 to .327 in the process. The 37-year-old is not going to provide much in the way of pop or speed, but keep running him out there in all formats until he cools down.

    • Marco Scutaro will serve as the designated hitter for Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays.
Advice: It's a way to give him a bit of a breather. Nick Noonan will start at second base and bat eighth.

    • Astros optioned INF Jacob Elmore to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Advice: Elmore appeared in three games during his brief callup. He's no longer needed with Jose Altuve returning from the disabled list.

  • Tue, May 14
    • Astros recalled INF Jacob Elmore from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Advice: He'll take the roster spot of Jose Altuve, who was placed on the bereavement list following the death of his grandmother. Elmore, 25, was batting .300/.381/.457 with two home runs, 15 RBI, eight stolen bases, and an .838 OPS in 36 games at Triple-A this season. Ronny Cedeno and Marwin Gonzalez figure to see most of the playing time in the middle infield until Altuve is ready to rejoin the team.

    • Yankees designated INF Alberto Gonzalez for assignment.
Advice: Gonzalez was DFA'd to make room for Reid Brignac on the active roster. He should pass through waivers and continue to serve as organizational infield depth. Brignac is not expected to arrive in time for Saturday's game.

    • Martin Prado is batting .275 in May.
Advice: Slowly but surely, Prado is digging himself out of an awful early-season slump. In his first month with the Snakes, Prado slashed an anemic .217/.266/.348. Over 15 games this month, he's batting a reasonable .275/.339/.333. It's certainly not the start Arizona expected after acquiring Prado in the Justin Upton trade and subsequently signed him to a four-year, $40 million contract extension. Sporting his trademark multi-position eligibility and playing in cozy Chase Field, now might be the time to buy low. Prado entered the year a .319/.370/.447 career hitter in Arizona.

    • Everth Cabrera went 0-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and an RBI in Thursday's defeat at the hands of Washington.
Advice: Cabrera's 13 steals rank second in the National League. A better real-life than fantasy player, Cabrera's value comes in the form of his legs (steals and runs) and eyes (walks). He looks poised to have a career year.

    • Brandon Crawford went 2-for-4 with a three-run double in the Giants' 8-6 victory over the Rockies on Thursday.
Advice: Crawford has made a career out of hitting against the Rockies; he's at .348 with three homers and 17 RBI in 92 at-bats against Colorado, compared to .228 with nine homers and 69 RBI in 680 at-bats against everyone else. Fortunately, he has three more games at Coors Field coming up this weekend.

    • Brendan Ryan turned in his first multihit game since April 5 on Thursday, going 2-for-4 with an RBI against the Yankees.
Advice: Ryan went 4-for-12 in the series against the Yankees, which is like an average hitter going 14-for-12. His average jumped all of the way from .122 to .149.

    • Derek Jeter (ankle) is close to getting the walking boot on his left foot removed again.
Advice: Jeter had a routine checkup recently and was told his left ankle is healing. Once the boot is removed, he'll be eased into baseball activities again. The future Hall of Famer won't be an option at shortstop for the Yankees until after the All-Star break.

    • Josh Rutledge went 3-for-4 with two RBI in the Rockies' loss to the Cubs on Wednesday.
Advice: The second baseman has struggled to find consistency in his first full year, but he's never gotten too low as to play himself out of a job. Rutledge has hit five homers and stolen five bases on the year, and he's actually getting on base at a decent clip given his mediocre batting average. His two RBI Wednesday gives him 13 on the year.

    • Elvis Andrus has hit safely in 12 of 15 games this month.
Advice: After scuffling out of the gate (.250/.291/.317 in April), Andrus has shown signs of adapting his timing. His OBP in May is over .350. After posting a career high .378 slugging percentage in 2012, Andrus has seen that number tumble to .321 entering play on Thursday. Of course, nobody drafted him as a slugger. The two-time All-Star already has almost half as many steals this year (10) as he did last (21), and he's only been picked off once. We're not concerned with him.

    • Orioles prospect infielder Jonathan Schoop has been placed on the 7-day disabled list with Triple-A Norfolk due to a lower back strain.
Advice: Coming off a breakthrough performance during the World Baseball Classic, the 21-year-old Schoop is batting .268/.331/.386 with three home runs, 18 RBI and a .717 OPS through 34 games at Triple-A this year. He has played 17 games at shortstop and 17 at second base.

    • Troy Tulowitzki went 3-for-5 with two doubles as the Rockies defeated the Cubs on Tuesday.
Advice: Tulo doubled twice and scored two runs on the night. The shortstop is now hitting .324 with 32 RBI, and he's unquestionably the best fantasy shortstop going these days. At this point, health will be the only thing that keeps him from finishing the season that way as well.

    • Alexi Amarista homered, doubled twice and scored three times Wednesday in the Padres' 8-4 win over the Orioles.
Advice: Amarista has homered in back-to-back starts. He has surprising pop for a little guy, with eight homers, six triples and 25 doubles in 404 major league at-bats. Unfortunately, he still hasn't managed to reach base consistently. The Padres will keep using him as a backup at second base and in center field, leaving him little fantasy value.

    • Pirates recalled INF Jordy Mercer from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Advice: Mercer was sent down to the minors earlier this week, but he's eligible to return now that John McDonald (back) has been placed on the disabled list. The 26-year-old is hitting .258 (8-for-31) with three home runs and four RBI in nine games with the Pirates this season.

    • Pirates optioned INF Jordy Mercer to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Advice: Mercer hit .258 with a .281 on-base percentage in 32 plate appearances during his 10-day stay with the Bucs. They should give him another shot later this season.

    • Batting leadoff with Denard Span sitting, Danny Espinosa went 0-for-4 on Tuesday, dropping his average to .175.
Advice: Espinosa was the choice to lead off against Clayton Kershaw even though he entered the game with a disgusting .213 OBP. The Nationals are going to have to seriously consider giving Steve Lombardozzi a crack at the second base job.

    • Jamey Carroll went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored Wednesday against the White Sox.
Advice: Carroll also knocked in his fourth run of the season. The veteran was starting just his 11th game, though he has played a bit more of late. As rarely as homers and steals come for him, he needs to be an everyday guy to be useful in AL-only leagues.

    • Pirates placed INF John McDonald on the 15-day disabled list with lower back discomfort.
Advice: McDonald suffered the injury during Tuesday's game and will now get some extended rest. The 38-year-old has just two hits in 31 at-bats this season. Jordy Mercer has returned from Triple-A Indianapolis to replace him on the active roster.

    • John McDonald left Tuesday's game against the Brewers with lower back discomfort.

    • Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said it "would not surprise me" if Jose Reyes returned in late June.
Advice: Reyes had the walking boot on his left foot removed Tuesday and is evidently recovering a bit ahead of schedule, as he had been expected to sit out until around the All-Star break. The shortstop is still in the early stages of his recovery, though. A lot can happen over the next six weeks.

    • Alcides Escobar went 3-for-5 with a double, stolen base, two runs scored and an RBI in the Royals' 11-4 win over the Angels on Monday.
Advice: Entering the contest, the 26-year-old had seen his average fall 40 points since May 5, a stretch where he managed just three singles and no walks. While Escobar is a better real-life player than fantasy commodity, he'll provide enough runs and steals to be of use in mixed formats.

    • FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Brewers made a long-term offer to shortstop Jean Segura.
Advice: "They contacted me," Segura's agent, Joe Klein, confirmed to Rosenthal. "Right now, I guess it's in my court. But with a guy this young, it's hard to figure out what the right numbers would be." Segura, 23, is batting .368/.412/.588 in 36 games this season and is on pace for 26 home runs, 57 stolen bases and 70 runs batted in. He won't even be arbitration-eligible until 2016, so there's no real rush right now from either side.

    • NL player of the week Jean Segura went 3-for-5 with an RBI and three steals Monday against the Pirates.
Advice: It's hard to imagine a battery much easier to run against than A.J. Burnett and Michael McKenry, and the Brewers took advantage, swiping six bases in six attempts tonight. Segura is up to 13 steals on the season.
