    • Eric Hosmer went 2-for-5 with two runs scored as the Royals beat the Astros on Tuesday.
Advice: The power is still missing, but Hosmer is now batting .271 with a .342 on-base percentage. The skill set suggests that he will start hitting the ball over the fence soon. He can break out at any time.

    • Eric Hinske is batting .188 with a .548 OPS over 34 plate-appearances.
Advice: The Diamondbacks handed Hinske a one-year, $1.35 million contract in December after he batted just .197/.272/.311 with two home runs and 13 RBI in 91 games last season for the Braves. The former Rookie of the Year, now 35, is reaching the end of a respectable 12-year career.

    • Ryan Howard went 3-for-5 with three RBI in the Phillies' 7-3 win over the Marlins on Tuesday.
Advice: Howard did it without the use of the longball, using three singles to plate the runs. The three RBI raised his count to 25 on the year, and he's got a .256/.292/.436 batting line. More importantly, he seems to be mostly healthy after playing just 71 games last season.

    • Ryan Howard received a cortisone shot in his left knee on Sunday.
Advice: The Phillies said that a "change" was found in his meniscus, as well as inflammation. Howard is considered day-to-day for now, but he could require a stint on the disabled list if he doesn't see improvement following the cortisone shot.

    • Ryan Howard will have a precautionary MRI on his left knee Monday.
Advice: The full extent of the injury isn't yet known, but it could provide some context to Howard's early struggles. The Phillies will provide an update on his status following the results of the MRI. Howard is not expected to play in Monday's game against the Marlins.

    • Adam Dunn hit a three-run homer off Jon Lester in the White Sox's victory Monday.
Advice: The home run was his second off a lefty this year. He hit 15 off southpaws last season after going without a single homer off a left-hander in 2011. Overall, Dunn has 11 homers this year. He's batting .211 with 13 RBI in 16 games this month after coming in at .148 with 12 RBI in 24 games in April.

    • Adam Dunn (back) is back in the White Sox' lineup Sunday.
Advice: Dunn left Saturday's game with back spasms, but he's feeling a lot better a day later. The veteran is batting .421/.450/1.158 with four homers and 10 RBI over his last five games.

    • Adam Dunn left Saturday's game against the Angels due to back spasms.
Advice: Jeff Keppinger hit for the first baseman in the fifth inning. Spasms are generally a day-to-day thing, so we'll have to see how Dunn is feeling Sunday before knowing if he'll have to miss some games. It's unfortunate timing, too, as Dunn has been heating up at the plate.

    • Athletics sent 1B Daric Barton outright to Triple-A Sacramento.
Advice: Barton cleared waivers after being designated for assignment over the weekend. This is actually the second time he has gone unclaimed since the end of spring training, which speaks to how far his stock has fallen in recent years. The 27-year-old batted .143 (3-for-21) in eight games with the A's and will function as minor league depth.

    • Athletics designated 1B Daric Barton for assignment.
Advice: Barton is batting just .143 (3-for-21) in eight games with Oakland this season. He's doubtful to draw any interest on waivers and should return as organizational depth at Triple-A Sacramento.

    • Joey Votto extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single against the Mets on Tuesday.
Advice: Votto is 20-for-40 (.500) in the 10 games, raising his batting average to .353 on the season. Miguel Cabrera is getting the bulk of the attention nationally, but few hitters in the game are as locked in as Votto right now.

  • Sat, May 18
    • Joey Votto went 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Saturday's 10-0 defeat of the Phillies.
Advice: Votto also drew two walks, reaching base in all six of his plate appearances. He boasts a ridiculous .346/.473/.531 slash line in 43 games this year and is probably the best pure batter in the majors right now. It's just gravy that the power is starting to come around.
      (Rotoworld.com)
  • Fri, May 17
    • Joey Votto went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in Friday's loss to the Phillies.
Advice: It was his fifth home run of the season and his first since April 25. Of course, it's tough to complain, as the 29-year-old is hitting .329/.457/.494 through 42 games. He has five multi-hit games in his last seven.

    • Logan Morrison (knee) went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles Monday in his first rehab game with High-A Jupiter.
Advice: Morrison, who is coming back from knee surgery, served as the designated hitter. The 25-year-old is permitted to spend 20 days on his rehab assignment and will likely need most of it to shake the rust and get comfortable. However, assuming all goes well, he should join the Marlins' lineup in early June.

  • Sun, May 19
    • Logan Morrison (knee) is slated to begin a rehab assignment with High-A Jupiter on Monday.
Advice: Morrison has been playing in extended spring training games lately and hasn't had any setbacks with his surgically-repaired knee. With his 20-day rehab clock started on Monday, he'll be activated no later than early June as long as he doesn't have a setback.

    • Kevin Youkilis (back) took three at-bats in an extended spring training game on Tuesday.
Advice: It was his first bit of game action since landing on the disabled list with a lumbar spine sprain. Youkilis' recovery has gone slower than expected, but he's finally made some strides. The Yankees haven't revealed a timetable for his return, but early June seems about right.

    • Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Kevin Youkilis (back) will take batting practice "pretty soon."
Advice: Youkilis has hit off a tee and taken soft-toss and is nearing the next step. The Yankees haven't set a timetable for his return, but it's looking like he'll probably be back sometime in late May or early June.

    • Ty Wigginton went 0-for-2 with a walk in Monday's loss to the Padres.
Advice: He was also caught stealing. Wigginton doesn't draw many starts, and he doesn't do much with them when he does, slashing .194/.286/.226 with no homers or steals and one RBI through 31 at-bats. St. Louis doesn't often make mistakes, but the two-year, $5 million deal they gifted Wigginton in mid-December certainly qualifies.

    • Giants recalled 1B Brett Pill from Triple-A Fresno.
Advice: Pill was just sent down to the minors over the weekend, but he's eligible to return since Ryan Vogelsong and Santiago Casilla are headed to the disabled list. The 28-year-old went 2-for-6 in his first stint with the big club and will function as a backup first baseman and right-handed bat off the bench.

    • Giants optioned 1B Brett Pill to Triple-A Fresno.
Advice: Pill was called up earlier this week and went 2-for-5 with two doubles in Friday's loss to the Rockies. He'll return to a .341/.380/.675 batting line, nine home runs and 47 RBI in 32 games in the minors.

    • Brandon Belt went 4-for-5 with his sixth home run of the season and four runs scored in Monday's 8-0 blowout of the Nationals.
Advice: Belt has reached base safely in 10 of his last 11 starts. Belt suffered through a forgettable April, batting .235/.287/.353, but his playing time and production have both spiked in May. Belt cut down his strikeouts and increased his rate of walks and his numbers reflect an improved approach at the plate. In May, he's slashing .250/.357/.521 with three homers over 48 at-bats.

    • Brandon Belt is not in Friday's lineup against the Rockies.

    • Corey Hart (knee) ran on the field and took full batting practice on Monday.
Advice: It's the first time he's done so since undergoing knee surgery. Hart admitted that the running was "awkward," but he could be ready for a rehab assignment in about a week. The assignment is expected to take a while, so it will likely be well into June before Hart is activated.

Advice: Davis lost his share of the AL home run lead when Robinson Cano went deep in the first, only to move back into a tie by hitting his 13th homer an inning later. He has four homers in 10 games after slumping some in late April and early May.

  • Sat, May 18
    • Reds recalled 1B Neftali Soto from Triple-A Louisville.
Advice: Soto, 24, has shown good power potential over his seven-year minor league career and will provide corner infield depth. He was batting .269/.310/.388 with three home runs in 33 games at the Triple-A level.
