    • Cardinals recalled RHP Mitchell Boggs from Triple-A Memphis.
Advice: Boggs struggled mightily after being named the Cardinals' closer at the start of the 2013 season and was optioned to Memphis on May 3 with a 12.66 ERA. He wasn't exactly flawless during his time on the farm and will probably be limited to low-leverage situations for a while. Edward Mujica's job is obviously safe.

    • Mitchell Boggs has tossed five scoreless innings since his demotion to Triple-A Memphis.
Advice: Boggs has permitted three hits, walked two and struck out four. Three of his five innings have required at least 20 pitches, but the Cardinals have been pleased with his progress beyond some efficiency issues. "It sounds like he has made a couple of good mechanical adjustments," manager Mike Matheny said. "The reports from the people who have been seeing him is that it looks like he is in a real good spot. He's an established major league player, so it's not an easy assignment. It seems like he is happy with how he's progressed. It's still yet to be seen how this all plays out, but he's going about this the right way."

    • Chris Perez blew his second save of the season Saturday against the Mariners.
Advice: Perez entered the top of the ninth with a 4-2 lead, but he coughed it up after giving up back-to-back solo homers to Raul Ibanez and Justin Smoak with two outs. The Indians eventually won the game on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the ninth, so Perez actually ended up with the victory. See, it wasn't all bad for Perez owners. The 27-year-old right-hander recently dealt with some shoulder soreness and has shown diminished velocity on his fastball this season, but he owns a 1.80 ERA and 16/5 K/BB ratio over 15 innings. Vinnie Pestano just returned from an elbow injury, so there's no immediate threat to his job.

    • Chris Perez felt some soreness in his right shoulder while throwing warmup pitches on Sunday.
Advice: Perez alerted bullpen coach Kevin Cash and was not brought into the game. "Missing a day here is better than missing two months," Perez told reporters on Sunday evening. "I might've pitched in the past. ... I always want to pitch." The right-handed closer expects to be available for Monday's doubleheader against the Yankees.

    • Ike Davis was told Saturday by Mets general manger Sandy Alderson that a demotion is not imminent.
Advice: ESPN New York reported Saturday morning that there were intensifying internal discussions about sending the struggling first baseman to Triple-A, but Davis got the vote of confidence on Saturday afternoon directly from the man who would make that decision. Davis estimated that he has about a month to turn it around.

    • Mets manager Terry Collins said Thursday that he is committed to batting Ike Davis cleanup "through the weekend."
Advice: Davis went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts Thursday and is now hitless over his last 22 at-bats, dropping his batting average to .157 for the year. The Mets are trying to be patient with the 26-year-old first baseman through his prolonged slump, but he can't keep killing rallies in the middle of the order for much longer.

    • Cardinals placed LHP Jaime Garcia on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain.
Advice: Garcia has been dealing with shoulder issues for over a year and could be out for an extended period of time. • Jaime Garcia got the win Friday night against the Brewers despite giving up six runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Advice: Hey, fantasy owners will take it. Garcia allowed six hits and a walk while all the damage was courtesy of a pair of two-run homers by Aramis Ramirez. The southpaw has allowed 11 runs over his last two starts, increasing his ERA from 2.25 to 3.58 on the year. Still, he'll carry a 5-2 record into a start against the Padres next week in San Diego.

    • Madison Bumgarner was knocked around for nine runs (seven earned) over 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Rockies.
Advice: Bumgarner blew leads of 4-0 and 5-4, including a grand slam by Jordan Pacheco in a five-run fifth inning. The seven earned runs allowed were a season-high and fell one short of his career-high. The southpaw struck out four and walked a pair in the loss. Bumgarner has been money in seven out of his nine starts this season, so we're expecting better results next time out against the Nationals at home.

Advice: Nelson was DFA'd by the Yankees earlier this week and batted just .222 (8-for-36) with two doubles and two RBI in 10 games since being traded. • Tyler Chatwood will be recalled from Triple-A Colorado to start against the Giants on Saturday.
Advice: Originally, Chatwood was expected to be recalled to start on Sunday in place of the injured Jeff Francis. Chatwood has fared decently in his first two starts with the Rockies this season, and has posted a 3.14 ERA and 29/5 K/BB ratio over 28 2/3 innings at Triple-A. Advice: Garza threw six scoreless innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Iowa earlier this week, so he shouldn't be on a strict pitch count in his season debut and will provide an immediate upgrade to the Cubs' rotation. His return means Carlos Villanueva will be relegated to a bullpen role.
