    • James Shields took a complete-game loss after giving up two runs in eight innings Friday against the A's.
Advice: Shields struck out nine, matching his season high. Unfortunately, he gave up his fifth and sixth homers of the season. Shields dropped to 2-4 on the season. The Royals have scored a total of five runs in his four losses.

    • Erick Aybar went 0-for-4 in Friday's loss and is just 11-for-51 this month.
Advice: That .216 average is also his on-base percentage for the month, since his one walk this season came on April 30. He's also 0-for-1 stealing bases this month. Aybar is only back in the leadoff spot because Peter Bourjos is hurt. He'll probably be dropped to seventh or lower once Bourjos is activated.

    • Erick Aybar (hamstring) is back in the Angels' lineup Tuesday.
Advice: Aybar hasn't played since he left Thursday's game with right hamstring tightness, but he's obviously feeling much better. He returns to a .273/.290/.348 batting line with one stolen base.

    • Erick Aybar (hamstring) is hoping to return to the Angels' lineup Monday.

    • Jorge De La Rosa was tagged for five runs in five innings Friday in a win over the Giants.
Advice: De La Rosa gave up nine hits and one walk and only registered one strikeout. It was quite a contrast for the southpaw, as he entered Friday's outing with a 14-inning scoreless streak and 12 scoreless frames at Coors Field this season. Still, the Rockies' offense powered him to the victory. De La Rosa is 5-3 with a 3.58 ERA through nine starts this season, but he needs more strikeouts to be interesting again in fantasy leagues.

  • Sun, May 12
    • Jorge De La Rosa fired seven scoreless innings Sunday in the Rockies' win over the Cardinals.
Advice: De La Rosa carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before allowing a single to David Freese that slipped right under the glove of Jordan Pacheco at first base. De La Rosa wound up yielding only two hits in all while racking up seven strikeouts. The impressive showing lowered his ERA from 3.52 to 2.98. He'll try to keep it going in his next scheduled start against the Giants.

    • Burch Smith gave up five runs and three homers in 5 1/3 innings Friday in a no-decision against the Nationals.
Advice: Smith struck out eight and walked just one, but there was no overcoming the homers. He has a 15.63 ERA after two starts, so his rotation spot is tenuous at best.

    • Jarrod Parker pitched seven innings of one-run ball in a no-decision against the Royals on Friday.
Advice: The A's didn't go ahead until the bottom of the eighth, so Parker was denied the win after his best performance so far this season. He struck out five and walked two tonight. After opening up 0-4 with an 8.10 ERA, he's 2-1 with a 4.07 ERA his last four times out.

  • Sun, May 12
    • Jarrod Parker yielded three runs in 6 1/3 innings Saturday in a victory over the Mariners.
Advice: We were guessing Parker would be optioned out when Brett Anderson returned, but his nice outing tonight, combined with Dan Straily's poor one Friday, will probably keep him in the rotation for now. At 2-5 with a 6.86 ERA, he remains a shaky play in fantasy leagues.

    • Madison Bumgarner was knocked around for nine runs (seven earned) over 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Rockies.
Advice: Bumgarner blew leads of 4-0 and 5-4, including a grand slam by Jordan Pacheco in a five-run fifth inning. The seven earned runs allowed were a season-high and fell one short of his career-high. The southpaw struck out four and walked a pair in the loss. Bumgarner has been money in seven out of his nine starts this season, so we're expecting better results next time out against the Nationals at home.

    • Chris Sale struck out 12 in 7 2/3 scoreless innings Friday in the White Sox's 3-0 win over the Angels.
Advice: Poor C.J. Wilson got matched up with Sale for the second time in six days and took another tough loss. Sale allowed just four hits and struck out 19 while pitching 16 2/3 scoreless innings over the course of the two outings. He's allowed one run in 24 career innings against the Angels.

    • Chris Sale had an abscessed tooth removed on Monday, but it's not expected to impact his availability for his next scheduled start Friday against the Angels.
Advice: Sale admitted that he's feeling it a little, but fortunately he still has multiple days to get well. The 24-year-old southpaw tossed a one-hit shutout Sunday night against the Angels and holds a 2.88 ERA and 49/12 K/BB ratio in 56 1/3 innings over eight starts this season.

    • Chris Sale threw a complete game one-hitter in Sunday night's win over the Angels.
Advice: Sale was perfect through six innings before giving up a single to Mike Trout. It was a dominant performance against a struggling Angels' lineup and his fifth straight quality start. Sale didn't allow any walks and finished with seven strikeouts. He now owns a 2.88 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 49/12 K/BB ratio through 56 1/3 innings this season. Sale will pitch against the Angels again on Friday in his next start.

    • Alex Rios went 2-for-3 with a homer and a walk Friday, extending his hitting streak to 12 games.
Advice: Rios opened the season on fire, homering in four straight games from April 5-9 and collecting hits in 10 straight. A three-week slump followed, but he's gotten it going against lately. The homer tonight was his fourth during his hitting streak.

    • Despite taking a comebacker off his pitching hand, Drew Storen pitched a scoreless 10th inning Friday against the Padres for his first save.
Advice: Aided by a Ryan Zimmerman throwing error, Rafael Soriano took a blown save in the ninth. Storen got his chance in the 10th after a Chad Tracy homer and got the job done, though not before allowing a couple of singles. The first of those was a hard shot up the middle that deflected off his pitching hand. Storen, though, remained in after a couple of warmups. His ERA sits at 4.41 currently, and he's no threat to Soriano's job as is.

    • Yoenis Cespedes went 0-for-4 on Friday to drop under the Mendoza Line at .198.
Advice: Cespedes has just four hits and one RBI in his last 10 games. His slump hasn't included many strikeouts -- in fact, he's gone six straight games without one -- but he might be fighting some lingering weakness from his illness earlier this week.

    • Marco Scutaro went 3-for-5 with an RBI single and a run scored Friday against the Rockies.
Advice: Ho-hum, just another multi-hit night for the hottest hitter in the game. Scutaro now has a 16-game hitting streak and has raised his batting average from .215 to .327 in the process. The 37-year-old is not going to provide much in the way of pop or speed, but keep running him out there in all formats until he cools down.

    • Adam Rosales hit a go-ahead homer off James Shields in the eighth in Oakland's 2-1 defeat of Kansas City on Friday.
Advice: The A's had been going with Eric Sogard against righties and Rosales against lefties, but Rosales drew the assignment against Shields tonight and came through with the big blast. As poorly as Sogard has hit, the A's will probably go with Rosales regularly for now.

    • Jordan Pacheco went 2-for-5 with a grand slam and five RBI in Friday's 10-9 win over the Giants.
Advice: Pacheco had an RBI ground out in the bottom of the second inning while his fifth-inning grand slam broke a 5-5 tie. With a .313/.360/.410 batting line over 26 games this season, the 27-year-old continues to be a useful player for Colorado. Todd Helton isn't a good bet to hold up and will require regular rest no matter what, so Pacheco should continue to have value in NL-only leagues.

    • Jose Valverde shut the Rangers down in the ninth inning on Friday, preserving a one-run lead and earning his fourth save of the season.
Advice: He did surrender a one-out walk, but was able to avoid further damage. It was a nice bounceback effort for the veteran closer, as he blew his first save of the season in his last opportunity against the Indians on Sunday. Despite missing all of spring training, he has looked relatively sharp in the early going, converting four of his five save chances while compiling a 1.13 ERA and 0.62 WHIP.

    • Jose Valverde rebounded from his first blown save of the season to pitch a scoreless ninth inning against the Astros on Tuesday.
Advice: It wasn't a save situation and it was against the Astros, after all, but it was still a positive sign for the right-hander. He struck out two in the outing, his first since blowing the save against the Indians on Sunday. He's still the Tigers closer going forward.

  • Sun, May 12
    • Jose Valverde suffered his first blown save of the season Sunday, coughing up a one-run lead in a loss to the Indians.
Advice: After walking Michael Bourn to start the inning and then watching him steal second, Valverde rebounded with a strikeout and a flyout. He then issued another walk to Jason Giambi, though, and Michael Brantley tied things up with a solid single to left field. Valverde owners will no doubt be thinking bad thoughts, but Brantley's hit is the lone base knock Papa Grande has given up in six appearances this season. He still has a good amount of job security at the moment.

Advice: Cahill walked four and struck out four on the night. The only blemish on his evening was an RBI single by Rob Brantly in the seventh inning. The 25-year-old righty has been extremely impressive in the early part of the season, posting a 2.33 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 43/24 K/BB ratio over 58 innings. • Brett Anderson was diagnosed with a navicular stress fracture of his right foot and will be shut down for four weeks.
Advice: Rough news for Anderson, who just can't seem to stay healthy. The 25-year-old southpaw is set to be reevaluated after four weeks, so his actual return to the Athletics likely won't be until around the early part of July.
