  • Franklin (concussion) to return this weekend
Nick Franklin (concussion) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Charlotte on Friday.

Advice: Franklin expects to join the Rays in Houston later this weekend so it looks like he'll only need a game or two in the minors to get back up to speed. He suffered a concussion last week after getting hit by Kevin Kiermaier's backswing in the on-deck circle. Franklin has hit .292 with six steals in 34 appearances for Tampa Bay this year. • RHP Silvino Bracho returns to Arizona
Diamondbacks recalled RHP Silvino Bracho from Triple-A Reno.

Advice: Bracho has put on the frequent flyer miles this year with his repeated trips from Reno to Phoenix. He hasn't had the year he was hoping for after pitching well at the end of last season. The right-hander holds a lackluster 6.75 ERA in 15 games for the Snakes in 2016. Rotoworld.com Today, 4:29 pm
  • RHP Brandon Cunniff called up to Atlanta
Braves recalled RHP Brandon Cunniff from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Advice: The Braves needed a fresh arm after losing to the Diamondbacks in 11 innings on Wednesday night. Cunniff logged a 7.36 ERA in three appearances with the big club earlier this month. He's fared much better in the minors with a 3.38 ERA over 41 outings for Gwinnett and Double-A Mississippi. Rotoworld.com Today, 3:27 pm
  • Andre Ethier heads out on rehab assignment
Andre Ethier (leg) will begin a minor league rehab assignment for High-A Rancho Cucamonga on Thursday.

Advice: Ethier participated in batting practice before Wednesday's game against the Giants and will now take the final step before making his return. The 34-year-old hasn't played yet this year after breaking his tibia during spring training. Ethier may require a lengthy rehab assignment after missing so much time. • End of an era: Carlos Ruiz traded to Dodgers
Dodgers acquired C Carlos Ruiz and cash from the Phillies in exchange for C A.J. Ellis, RHP Tommy Bergjans and a player to be named later.

Advice: Ruiz had been with the Phillies since 2006. He hit .266 with 68 HR and 401 RBI during that span while making it to the World Series in 2008 and 2009. The 37-year-old will slide in as Yasmani Grandal's backup with Ellis filling a similar role in Philadelphia behind Cameron Rupp. With Ruiz gone, Ryan Howard is the lone holdover from Philadelphia's World Series team in '08. He might be gone soon as well. Rotoworld.com Today, 2:40 pm
  • Strasburg (elbow) resumes playing catch
Stephen Stasburg (elbow) has felt good playing catch the last two days.

Advice: Given his history with Tommy John surgery it's natural to press the panic button whenever we hear about Strasburg's elbow. Fortunately the soreness is in a different part of his elbow than the UCL, which is the ligament most commonly associated with major elbow injuries. The Nationals are considering Strasburg's latest trip to the disabled list precautionary and are hoping he'll be back early next month. The 28-year-old got off to a solid start this year but has slumped since the All-Star break with a 6.28 ERA over seven second-half starts. Rotoworld.com Today, 2:24 pm

Rangers designated OF Drew Stubbs for assignment.

Advice: The Rangers needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Carlos Gomez, who is making his Texas debut Thursday against Cleveland. • E-Rod (hamstring) says he's ready for Sunday
Eduardo Rodriguez (hamstring) has declared himself ready to start Sunday versus the Royals.

Advice: Rodriguez went all-out in a bullpen session Thursday at Tropicana Field and experienced no lingering discomfort in his left hamstring. He last started August 16 against the Orioles and made it through just four innings (hitless innings, by the way) before feeling hamstring tightness. The young left-hander owns a sharp 2.52 ERA in 39 1/3 innings (seven starts) since being recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket in mid-July. Rotoworld.com Today, 9:05 am

  • Chris Young takes over as Sox left fielder
Red Sox manager John Farrell indicated Thursday morning that Chris Young will serve as the club's regular left fielder down the stretch.

Advice: Andrew Benintendi suffered a serious-looking left leg injury on Wednesday night at Tropicana Field and could very well be done for the season. Young just returned Monday from a two-month hamstring strain and tends to struggle against right-handed pitching, but he has a cool .858 OPS in 147 total plate appearances this year. With good power and speed, he's worth a claim in deeper mixed fantasy leagues. Brock Holt will draw some starts in left field versus tougher righties. Rotoworld.com Today, 8:26 am
  • Nationals acquire Marc Rzepczynski from A's
Nationals acquired LHP Marc Rzepczynski from the Athletics for INF Max Schrock.

Advice: Rzepczynski has walked 24 batters and yielded 38 hits in 36 innings this season for a nasty 1.72 WHIP, but he has somehow managed a 3.00 ERA. Washington is desperate for bullpen help, especially from the left side. "Scrabble" will function in a lefty specialist role. Rotoworld.com Today, 8:04 am
  • Hudson moving into late-inning role with ARI
Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said late Wednesday that Daniel Hudson will likely be moved into a late-inning role.

Advice: Hale didn't officially anoint Hudson as the team's new closer, but it's a decent bet he gets the next save opportunity. Hudson earned his 17th hold of the season on Wednesday night against the Braves and has now gone 10 straight appearances without allowing a run after struggling badly in July. Enrique Burgos, meanwhile, has surrendered seven earned runs over his last three innings of work, including four earned Wednesday versus Atlanta. Hale also mentioned Randall Delgado as a possible late-inning guy for the stretch run. Arizona's bullpen is such a mess. Rotoworld.com Today, 6:14 am
  • Reddick (finger) goes 0-for-3 in return Wed.
Josh Reddick went 0-for-3 (finger) in his return to the Dodgers' lineup on Wednesday.

Advice: Reddick had been held out two games after jamming his right middle finger while having room service delivered at the Dodgers' team hotel in Cincinnati on Sunday. The 29-year-old outfielder is batting just .143/.211/.157 in 76 plate appearances so far with Los Angeles. Rotoworld.com Today, 5:40 am
  • James Loney goes 0-for-4 in loss
James Loney went 0-for-4 in the loss to the Cardinals on Wednesday.

Advice: Loney won some fans in New York after a solid start replacing James Loney, but his OPS is under .700 now and he's driven in all of 26 runs in 71 games (and scored a total of 21 times). He's not helping. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 9:18 pm
  • Machado finishes 4-for-6 with two-run bomb
Manny Machado went 4-for-6 with a homer and four total RBI to lead the Orioles over the Nationals 10-8 on Wednesday.

Advice: Machado's two-run bomb in the first inning set the tone for the high-scoring night. He then added run-scoring singles in the second and eighth innings. The four hits raised his batting average to .306 in 494 at-bats. The home run was his 29th. Machado has scored 87 runs and driven in 78. He has yet to steal a base after swiping 20 last year, but that's kind of a side concern at this point for his fantasy owners. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 9:13 pm

  • Ethier (leg) participates in Wednesday BP
Andre Ethier (leg) took part in batting practice prior to Wednesday's game against the Giants.

Advice: Ethier wouldn't divulge how close he is to a rehab assignment, instead giving it the old "one day at a time" treatment. On Tuesday, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that the club expects Ethier to be able to return some time in the middle of September. • Red Sox waiting to announce Sunday starter
Red Sox manager John Farrell said that the team will not decide on a Sunday starter until Eduardo Rodriguez (hamstring) tosses a Thursday bullpen.

Advice: Rodriguez is fresh off a simulated start on Tuesday in which he threw 59 pitches. He initially felt his left hamstring tighten up during a mid-August contest against the Orioles. The 23-year-old southpaw was subsequently scratched from a scheduled start against the Tigers due to lingering discomfort. • Carlos Ruiz, Ryan Howard clear waivers
Carlos Ruiz and Ryan Howard have cleared waivers, according to ESPN's Jayson Stark.

Advice: Which means they can now be traded to any team. Stark hears that two clubs are mulling Ruiz, but Howard is virtually certain to remain in Philadelphia. Ruiz, 37, has batted .261/.368/.352 with three home runs and 12 RBI in 48 games this season with the Phillies. He will be a free agent this winter. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 12:32 pm
  • Reddick (finger) draws walk, scores run
Josh Reddick (finger) drew a walk and scored a run as a pinch-hitter on Tuesday.

Advice: Reddick was held out of the Dodgers' starting lineup for the second straight game after jamming his right middle finger while having room service delivered in Cincinnati on Sunday. Including that walk on Tuesday night against the Giants, the 29-year-old outfielder is batting .149/.219/.164 in 73 plate appearances with Los Angeles. Maybe he can finish strong. • Josh Reddick (finger) remains sidelined Tues.
Josh Reddick (finger) remains out of the Dodgers' starting lineup on Tuesday night.

Advice: Reddick jammed his right middle finger on Sunday night while having room service delivered and sat out Monday afternoon's series finale in Cincinnati. He was able to take batting practice on Tuesday evening, which is obviously a strong indication that the injury is not serious. Rob Segedin will start in right field and bat seventh Tuesday versus Giants left-hander Madison Bumgarner. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 5:32 pm
  • Ethier (leg) to debut in mid-September?
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he's expecting Andre Ethier (leg) to be ready for activation around mid-September.

Advice: Ethier will likely have to go through a lengthy rehab assignment first given that he's been out since March with a fractured tibia. • Nats believe Strasburg's elbow not serious
Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said Monday that he believes Stephen Strasburg's elbow is structurally sound.

Advice: For what it's worth, Rizzo is basing part of his assessment on Strasburg's pre-extension physical earlier this season. • Reddick got finger caught in door
Josh Reddick said after Monday's game that he injured his right middle finger Sunday night when he got his hand caught in a door while ordering room service.

Advice: Because his tenure with the Dodgers hasn't been rough enough already. Reddick was scratched from Monday's lineup as a result and called the injury "rock bottom." • Red Sox activate OF Chris Young off the DL
Red Sox activated OF Chris Young from the 15-day disabled list.

Advice: Young wound up missing two full months with a right hamstring strain. He should see playing time in left field against left-handed pitching down the stretch, but top prospect Andrew Benintendi has taken over as the club's primary starter at that position. Young returns Monday to a .277/.338/.508 season slash line. Rotoworld.com Monday, 12:01 pm
  • Stephen Strasburg elbow issue not structural
According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Stephen Strasburg's elbow issue is "not structural" and the Nationals believe he could pitch through it if this were the postseason.

Advice: Strasburg was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday with soreness in his right elbow after posting a 14.66 ERA over his last three starts, including a nine-run drubbing last Wednesday versus the Rockies. There are red flags everywhere on this one, but the Nats are maintaining that he only needs a couple weeks of rest. For now anyway. A.J. Josh Reddick was scratched from the Dodgers' starting lineup on Monday due to a jammed middle finger on his right hand.

Andre Ethier (leg) has been taking at-bats against live pitching at the Dodgers' spring training complex.

Advice: Manager Dave Roberts also noted that Ethier is running at about 75 percent. Josh Reddick is not in the Dodgers' lineup Saturday against the Reds.

Advice: Manager Dave Roberts said Reddick has been pressing lately and he wanted to give him a day to recharge. The 29-year-old has hit just .164 since joining the Dodgers at the trade deadline. Josh Reddick went 1-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout in Friday’s loss to the Reds.

Advice: Reddick is now batting .164/.227/.180 with zero homers and zero RBI through his first 66 plate appearances with the Dodgers. He has one double and nine singles out of his 10 hits with his new club. It has been a rough start for the impending free agent, but we’re expecting better things down the stretch. • Rockies pound Strasburg for nine earned runs
Stephen Strasburg was obliterated in Wednesday's 12-10 loss to the Rockies, yielding nine runs on nine hits over 1 2/3 innings.

Advice: Seven of the nine runs on Strasburg's line came home in a nightmare first inning. One run scored in the frame courtesy of a Nolan Arenado RBI single, while the other six came on a trio of RBI doubles by Gerardo Parra, Tony Walters and opposing pitcher Jon Gray. We will just chalk this up as an aberration for Strasburg -- though he has struggled by degrees in each of his last three starts. Even after Wednesday's debacle, he still holds a 3.59 season ERA.
