• Giants option Marco Luciano to Triple-A
Giants optioned SS Marco Luciano to Triple-A Sacramento.

Advice: It’s not a totally unexpected development, but it’s a bit surprising the Giants are going to roll with veteran defensive specialist Nick Ahmed at shortstop to open the season instead of rolling the dice on Luciano, who possesses a much higher offensive ceiling. The 22-year-old former top prospect will head back to the minors to open the year, but figures to get his extended opportunity at some point in the near future given Ahmed’s health issues over the last few seasons. • Angels officially add Miguel Sanó to active roster
Angels selected the contract of 1B Miguel Sanó from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Advice: Sanó has officially made the Angels’ Opening Day roster after signing a minor league contract back in late January. The slimmed-down 30-year-old slugger figures to split time with youngster Nolan Schanuel at the hot corner and veteran Aaron Hicks at designated hitter. He hasn’t appeared in the majors since the first half of the 2022 campaign, but still offers significant over-the-fence power potential, which could make him a decent speculative flyer in deeper mixed leagues. • Astros option Corey Julks to Triple-A
Astros optioned OF Corey Julks to Triple-A Sugar Land.

Advice: It seemed like Julks had the inside track to a spot on Houston’s season-opening roster, but has been jettisoned to the minors instead. The 28-year-old outfielder figures to get another shot in the big leagues whenever an opportunity arises due to injury or ineffectiveness. Rotoworld Today, 3:20 am
  • Could yield to Berti at third base
Yankees manager Aaron Boone isn't yet certain whether Cabrera or newly acquired Jon Berti will start at third base on Opening Day, Jack Curry of YES Network reports.

Advice: With DJ LeMahieu (foot) beginning the season on the IL and Oswaldo Peraza set to miss several weeks due to a shoulder injury, Cabrera didn't appear to have much competition for the role of the Yankees' primary third baseman to begin the campaign. That changed Wednesday, however, when New York acquired Jon Berti in a three-team trade involving the Marlins and Rays. Though there's still a chance Cabrera could start on Opening Day, it's almost certain that he'll yield substantial time at the hot corner to the more-experienced Berti, who racked up a career-high 424 plate appearances last season and hit .294 while compiling 53 runs and 16 stolen bases. By contrast, Cabrera struggled over 330 plate appearances, slashing just .211/.275/.299 with five homers, 29 RBI, 35 runs and eight thefts. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 11:44 pm

  • Mets option J.D. Martinez to Triple-A Syracuse
Mets optioned DH J.D. Martinez to Triple-A Syracuse.

Advice: It’s pretty wild that Martinez still has minor-league options left entering his age-36 season. As expected, the veteran slugger will head to the minors for at least a couple days to ramp up in advance of his Mets debut with the expectation that he’ll be ready to roll in early April. • Cubs option Alexander Canario to Triple-A
Cubs optioned OF Alexander Canario to Triple-A Iowa.

Advice: Canario was optioned to the minors earlier this week. The 23-year-old prospect stuck around until the end of camp competing for a bench spot with the Cubs, but will get some extra seasoning back in the upper minors instead. Rotoworld Yesterday, 5:44 pm
  • Royals put Michael Massey (back) on 10-day IL
Royals placed INF Michael Massey on the 10-day injured list with back tightness.

Advice: Massey was placed on the injured list earlier this week as he works his way back from a lower back issue. Rotoworld Yesterday, 5:31 pm
  • Giants option Blake Sabol to Triple-A
Giants optioned C/OF Blake Sabol to Triple-A Sacramento.

Advice: Sabol was shipped out earlier this week in advance of Opening Day. The 26-year-old offers plenty of defensive versatility, but there simply isn’t space for him in San Francisco at the moment. Rotoworld Yesterday, 5:22 pm
  • Could see time at DH
Kelly could see some time at DH this year on days that Jake Rogers starts behind the plate, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Advice: Kelly was already expected to see a sizable role as the backup catcher, and time at DH would boost his prospects further. Rogers should still play more frequently, though Kelly will be involved it seems, particularly against left-handed pitchers, as he posted an .801 OPS against southpaws last season. His value would increase if Rogers dealt with an injury at any point. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 5:20 pm
