    • Heading back to Triple-A
The Nationals optioned Herz to Triple-A Rochester on Monday.

Advice: Unless the Nationals place another player on the injured list in a corresponding move, Herz won't be eligible to rejoin Washington for another 15 days. Though Herz was tagged for five runs (four earned) in 4.1 innings in his most recent start in Sunday's loss to the Cardinals, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com suggests that the left-hander's demotion likely isn't a result of the Nationals being dissatisfied with his performance. Instead, Washington is likely just giving him some extra rest ahead of the All-Star break, with Herz being a candidate to rejoin the big-league rotation when a fifth starter is needed to begin the second half of the season. Washington recalled right-hander Joan Adon from Triple-A to replace Herz on the 26-man active roster and provide a fresh arm out of the bullpen in the short term. Rotowire.com Today, 10:28 am

    • Joins big-league bullpen
The Nationals recalled Adon from Triple-A Rochester on Monday.

Advice: Adon has made all but two of his 28 career big-league appearances as a starter, but he appears poised to work out of the Washington bullpen after he transitioned to a relief role at Rochester in late June. Over his five relief outings at Triple-A, Adon struck out five while allowing seven baserunners over 5.1 scoreless innings. Rotowire.com Today, 10:23 am

    • Nabs first win of season
Chargois (1-0) picked up the win Sunday over the White Sox, giving up a hit in a scoreless ninth inning.

Advice: The right-hander was called in with the Marlins down 4-3 in the top of the ninth, and Chargois got rewarded for his efforts when Jake Burger walked it off with a three-run homer in the bottom of the frame. Chargois has been very effective since making his season debut in mid-June, posting a 1.69 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 9:4 K:BB through 10.2 innings, and he could be working his way into the high-leverage mix for the Marlins. • Activated ahead of Monday's start
The Twins activated Paddack (arm) from the 15-day injured list Monday.

Advice: Paddack will rejoin the Twins rotation and start Monday versus the White Sox after missing the past two weeks with right arm fatigue. He didn't make a rehab start prior to being activated, so it's possible Paddack will be a little limited from a pitch count perspective Monday. Reliever Josh Winder was optioned to Triple-A St. Paul in a corresponding move. Rotowire.com Today, 9:17 am

    • Chris Paddack off the IL for Monday start
Twins activated RHP Chris Paddack (arm) from the 15-day IL.

Advice: Paddack was placed on the IL on June 25th with arm fatigue and was quick to make public remarks that there was no injury to worry about. With David Festa struggling in his first two MLB starts, the Twins will activate Paddack from the IL on Monday in time to start against the White Sox. Given that Paddack is coming off two weeks of rest and has a 5.29 ERA in 15 starts this season, he’s a risky bet even in a plus matchup. Josh Winder was sent to the minors in a corresponding move. • Tanner Houck changed weekly routine this season
According to The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey, Tanner Houck made a few changes to his weekly routine that have helped lead to his breakout season.

Advice: Houck was recently named to the All-Star team after posting a 2.68 ERA in the first half of the season. While some of that success can obviously be attributed to improved command and a better attack plan against lefties, Houck also mentioned two changes that he and pitching coach Andrew Bailey made this offseason. Houck moved his lifting day up but also moved his mid-week bullpen session up a day, according to Bailey, “Just gives them an extra 24 hours to recover, to maximize that recovery process, to really take inventory on the body and where it’s at...Being as far away removed from the highest workload event (pitching-wise) is probably the safest bet. And then that way, we can take an honest look at what can we get done today that sets us up for a competition.” Houck also mentioned that those bullpens now feature fewer pitches since his mechanics feel a lot better this year and he’s now just focused on refining during those sessions. All of those changes seem to have worked for the 28-year-old, who is emerging as a legit front-of-the-rotation arm in Boston. Rotoworld Today, 9:00 am
    • Happy with mechanical tweaks
Gausman tinkered with his mechanics ahead of Friday's start against the Mariners, in which he tied his season high with 10 strikeouts, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. "I definitely had a bit of a different delivery today, and that was by design," Gausman said after the outing. "It's something we're trying to get back to what I was doing in 2021. I think it will allow me to be around the zone a little bit more."

Advice: The veteran right-hander saw his fastball average 1.4 mph more than it had this season coming into the start, while the movement on his splitter was more effective as a result of the tweaks. "I was getting way too much horizontal movement on my splitter and not enough vertical movement," Gausman said. "I haven't looked at the metrics, but I could tell that it was carrying the zone. To me, that shows the vertical was there on my splitter. Guys are going to swing more at it when it looks like it's going to be in the zone longer." Gausman, who missed much of spring training due to shoulder fatigue, has had an inconsistent beginning to the season and will carry a 4.64 ERRA, 1.34 WHIP and 24.0 percent strikeout rate into his next start -- numbers all well below the standard he established during his career resurgence in San Francisco in 2020-21. • Rosenthal: Rangers could trade Scherzer, others
According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the Rangers could look to trade away players on expiring contracts at the deadline.

Advice: The Rangers have been playing better of late, but they are 7 1/2 games back in the race for the third American League wild card with playoff odds hovering around 10 percent, so Rosenthal believes the team will be open to trading players on expiring contracts like Max Scherzer, Michael Lorenzen, Andrew Heaney, David Robertson, and Kirby Yates. With Tyler Mahle and Jacob deGrom also inching closer to second-half returns, the Rangers could deal from their starting rotation and not lose much. Rosenthal also suggests that the Rangers could listen on deals for Nathaniel Lowe, Leody Taveras, and “perhaps even Adolis García, all of whom are performing below expectations and under club control at rising salaries for two more seasons.” Trades would drastically impact the fantasy value of most of these players, which makes the Rangers perhaps the most interesting team at the trade deadline. • Five innings in spot start
Wrobleski (0-1) gave up four earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four in five innings Sunday against the Brewers. He took the loss.

Advice: This was Wrobleski's big-league debut, and he had some impressive moments, including touching 98 mph with his four-seam fastball on one of his four punch outs. The lefty, who turns 24 later this week, pounded the zone (64.5 Zone%, 70.0 Strike%) and gave up a couple home runs on the day. His fastball averaged 95 mph and he threw mostly cutters and sliders off the fastball while mixing in a few changeups. Manager Dave Roberts hinted after the game, per Amie Cuevas, that while he was impressed with Wrobleski's poise and pitch efficiency, the Dodgers will make a move to call up a reliever to take Wrobleski's place on the roster before Tuesday's game against the Phillies. The Dodgers have five healthy starters besides Wrobleski, but Roberts noted that they'd be seeing the young lefty back in the majors soon. Rotowire.com Today, 8:29 am
