    • Set to throw off mound Tuesday
      Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Monday that Kelly (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.

      Advice: Kelly recently upped his throwing distance to 120 feet, and Tuesday will mark the first time he's thrown off the mound since straining his right shoulder in April. It's a positive step in the 35-year-old's throwing program, though the right-hander isn't expected to come off the injured list until mid-to-late August.       Diaz (3-1) got the win during Sunday's 3-2 victory over the Pirates but also blew the save. He did not allow a run on one hit, one walk and one strikeout over 1.1 innings.

      Advice: With the Mets leading 1-0, Diaz entered the game with two outs in the eighth and allowed a walk and the go-ahead hit. After Francisco Lindor gave his team the lead, Diaz came back out and pitched a clean ninth to pick up his third win. The 30-year-old returned from his 10-game suspension Saturday, and he picked up the save. With Sunday's outing, he hasn't allowed a run in his last six appearances and has lowered his ERA to 4.26.     • Edwin Díaz blows save, earns win against Pirates
      Edwin Díaz worked 1 1/3 innings on Sunday against the Pirates. He allowed one hit, one walk, struck out one batter, blew the save, and wound up with the win.

      Advice: Back from suspension, Díaz was tasked with a four-out save pitching on back-to-back days. He walked the first batter he saw and allowed both of his inherited runners to score. Then, the Mets grabbed the lead and he came back out to pitch a scoreless ninth inning. Díaz clearly isn’t the same pitcher he was in 2022, but the Mets have absolute trust in him as their closer.       Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said Sunday that he anticipates Bednar (oblique) reporting to Triple-A Indianapolis this week to begin a rehab assignment, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

      Advice: Bednar has been on the 15-day injured list since June 23 with a left oblique strain, but he's on the cusp of a return after he threw a 21-pitch live batting practice session Saturday without incident. Cherington didn't say whether Bednar would require more than one rehab appearance with Indianapolis, but with the All-Star break looming, it wouldn't be surprising if the Pirates waited until the start of their second-half schedule July 19 before activating their closer.     • Set to return from IL on Tuesday
      The Giants will reinstate Snell (groin) from the 15-day injured list and have him start Tuesday versus the Blue Jays in San Francisco, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

      Advice: As he prepares for his first start with the Giants since June following his second IL stint of the season, Snell will be taking the hill on five days' rest. The southpaw endured some bumps in the road in the first of his two rehab outings in his return from a left groin strain, but he was utterly dominant in his final start for Sacramento on Wednesday, tossing five no-hit, shutout innings while striking out nine. He'll tentatively line up for two starts during the upcoming week, with his second outing set to fall next Sunday versus the Twins in the Giants' final game before the All-Star break.       Advice: Snell will come off the injured list Tuesday after missing over a month with his groin strain. The southpaw was sensational in his last rehab start with five scoreless innings and nine strikeouts, and while he has struggled in his six starts with the Giants thus far with a 9.64 ERA, the 31-year-old’s pedigree and success in the second halves of season are obviously worth considering.       Advice: Seeing his first action since serving a 10-game suspension for use of a foreign substance, Diaz hit Oneil Cruz with a pitch to begin the frame but escaped the minor jam by striking out Rowdy Tellez and getting Andrew McCutchen to ground into a double play. Diaz has had a turbulent campaign in his return from a knee injury that cost him the entire 2023 season, but he had been showing signs of turning things around prior to the suspension -- he's allowed only one run in his last six innings with a 7:0 K:BB.       Advice: Diaz slammed the door on the Pirates to preserve a 5-2 victory for New York. The save was his eighth of the season and first since returning from a 10-game suspension for using an illegal foreign substance. The Mets had the league’s worst bullpen ERA while he was out.       Advice: Bednar utilized all three of his pitches in Saturday's session as he faced live batters for the first time in his rehab program. It's another positive step for the 29-year-old as he works his way back from a left oblique strain.
