Advice: McCann was red-hot after returning from shoulder surgery, but he's hitting just .130 (3-for-23) with eight strikeouts over his last eight games and hasn't had an extra-base hit since June 3. We'd stay the course with him in shallow mixed leagues, though.

    • Adam Wainwright was undone by a poor first inning Tuesday, allowing all four runs of his runs in a loss to the Cubs.
Advice: Waino retired the first two batters of the game before giving up four straight hits -- including back-to-back homers -- and four runs. He was pretty much spotless the rest of the way, shutting the Cubbies out for the next six frames, but by then it was too late. Despite the relatively disappointing showing in a juicy matchup, Wainwright still has a 2.37 ERA and 1.01 WHIP for the season. He gets the Rangers at home this weekend.

  • Thu, Jun 13
    • Adam Wainwright notched his major-league leading 10th victory Thursday by tossing seven scoreless innings in a 2-1 win over the Mets.
Advice: Wainwright had no problems with the weak-hitting Mets' lineup, giving up just four hits and a pair of walks while notching six strikeouts. The strong outing pulled his ERA down to 2.18 for the year. Meanwhile, his K/BB ratio sits at a ridiculous 97/7 K/BB over 103 innings. He'll look for win No. 11 next time out in another favorable matchup, this time against the last-place Cubs.

    • Kevin Youkilis has a herniated disc in his back and will undergo surgery to repair it on Thursday.
Advice: He is expected to need about 10-12 weeks of rest and rehab, which puts his season in jeopardy. It's another brutal blow to the Yankees, who have been without third baseman Alex Rodriguez (hip) all year. Youkilis was batting .219/.305/.343 with two home runs and eight RBI in 28 games as A-Rod's fill-in at the hot corner.

Advice: No word yet on how long he may be sidelined, but since it's a recurring issue, it may be longer than 15 days. It's the same ailment that landed Youkilis on the disabled list at the end of April. Advice: The Rays will officially promote Odorizzi on Tuesday night to be their 26th man. The talented young right-hander has a bright future but probably isn't worth messing with for one random outing at Fenway Park. Chris Archer will start the first half of the doubleheader.

    • Michael Morse is not in the Mariners' lineup Tuesday due to his nagging right quad injury.
Advice: Morse originally suffered the injury in late May, and he's been unable to totally shake it. The M's have admitted that they would have placed him on the DL earlier had they not been dealing with other injuries, and they're probably wishing they would have gone ahead and done it, anyway. • Ervin Santana allowed just one run over seven innings but didn't get the win, settling for a no-decision against the Indians on Tuesday.
Advice: Santana was in line for his sixth win of the year before Kelvin Herrera imploded in relief. It still doesn't take away from another stellar start from the right-hander, who allowed just three hits and two walks, striking out six. He now owns a 2.64 ERA and 0.98 WHIP through 14 starts. He'll take the mound again Tuesday in an interleague matchup with the Braves.

    • Ervin Santana limited the Rays to an unearned run over 7 2/3 innings to pick up a victory on Thursday.
Advice: Santana has managed to overcome last month's homer barrage and allowing just four runs -- two earned -- over 21 innings in his last three starts. He's also given up only one homer in that span after allowing nine in his four losses in May. He's back up to .500 for the season now at 5-5 with a 2.74 ERA. He's fifth in the AL with a 1.00 WHIP.

    • Brandon Barnes went 3-for-5 with a couple of steals against the White Sox on Monday.
Advice: Justin Maxwell is expected back in Houston's lineup on Tuesday, but Barnes should remain the team's center fielder, with Maxwell primarily playing right. That doesn't give him much fantasy value -- he's been struggling offensively since his nice April -- but he's an acceptable fifth outfielder in AL-only leagues.

    • Mat Latos took his first loss of the season on Tuesday, allowing three runs in five innings against the Pirates.
Advice: All good things must end. Latos hadn't suffered a loss since August 24 of last season until Tuesday, despite the start not being his worst in that span. The right-hander was actually pretty good, striking out nine while allowing the Pirates to get just three hits and three walks. He'll look to start a new streak Sunday when he faces the Diamondbacks in Arizona.

Advice: Carp was supposed to be a part-time player, but he's forcing the hand of Red Sox manager John Farrell with his play. The first baseman is hitting .320/.372/.680 with eight homers in 103 at-bats this year. He won't continue to hit at such a clip, but it's worth riding while he's hit in deeper mixed leagues.

    • Aaron Harang was tagged for four runs on 12 hits in five innings by the Angels in a loss Monday.
Advice: He struck out four and didn't walk a batter. Harang actually has an outstanding 56/9 K/BB rate and a solid 1.31 WHIP. That's the good news for Seattle management and AL-only owners still holding out hope he'll turn it around. To the naked eye, however, Harang just doesn't have the stuff to get out major league hitters anymore. It's great to eliminate free passes, but it doesn't do much good if the slop you loft over the plate is obliterated all over the park.
