    • Rangers placed 2B Ian Kinsler on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 18, with an intercostal strain.
Advice: Kinsler hasn't started the last two games with rib soreness and said he still felt discomfort during batting practice on Sunday. The Rangers aren't overly concerned about the injury, but top prospect Jurickson Profar will be called up to replace Kinsler on the active roster. Kinsler is batting .302/.369/.500 with seven home runs through his first 40 games this season.

    • Ian Kinsler (ribs) is out of the Rangers' starting lineup again on Saturday evening.
Advice: Kinsler was hit in the ribs by a throw Tuesday while stealing second base and aggravated his contusion Thursday during an at-bat. He is considered day-to-day.

    • Ian Kinsler was scratched from Friday's lineup due to bruised ribs.
Advice: Kinsler was hit in his ribs with a throw Tuesday while stealing a base and aggravated it on Thursday while getting out of the way of a pitch. Consider him day-to-day for now. Leury Garcia will fill in at second base while Elvis Andrus bats leadoff.

    • Jed Lowrie went 0-for-3 with a sacrifice-fly RBI in Saturday's victory against Kansas City.
Advice: Lowrie pounded the ball in April, batting .333 with a .938 OPS and 15 RBI in 102 plate appearances. The 29-year-old suffered a strained neck at the end of the month and hasn't been the same since, batting .232/.328/.286 with no homers, four RBI and one run scored over 56 May plate appearances. It's possible that the oft-injured infielder is trying to play through a malady that would be better treated by rest.

    • Howie Kendrick went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Sunday's game against the White Sox.
Advice: Kendrick hasn't had many RBI opportunities batting in the sixth spot for the Angels, but he surprisingly managed six home runs this season. The 29-year-old second baseman is batting .370 (10-for-27) with a home run and two doubles over his last seven games.

  • Wed, May 15
    • Howie Kendrick went 3-for-4 with a solo home run Tuesday versus the Royals.
Advice: It's a shame Kendrick is batting sixth for the Angels, because it's not giving him many RBI opportunities, particularly with Josh Hamilton off to such a rough start. Kendrick is batting .294 with a surprising six homers, but it's resulted in a modest 18 RBI and 13 runs scored to date.

    • Everth Cabrera went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and an RBI in Saturday's win against the Nationals.
Advice: Cabrera has now stolen a base in four consecutive games, bumping him to the National League leader with 15. The shortstop will never post a good batting average, but he's getting on base more and running as effectively as ever. The 26-year-old shortstop batted .246/.324/.324 with a league-leading 44 stolen bases last season and is a decent bet to improve upon all numbers in 2013.

    • Everth Cabrera went 0-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and an RBI in Thursday's defeat at the hands of Washington.
Advice: Cabrera's 13 steals rank second in the National League. A better real-life than fantasy player, Cabrera's value comes in the form of his legs (steals and runs) and eyes (walks). He looks poised to have a career year.

    • Since May 2, Ryan Raburn is batting an anemic .172/.273/.241 over 33 plate appearances.
Advice: Raburn lived a charmed life in April, slashing .320/.370/.620 in the season's opening month. The wheels have come off since he went 4-for-5 against the Phillies on May 1. Since that time, he's seen his OPS deflate from 1.061 to .871 with no signs of slowing. Raburn began losing playing time when Michael Bourne returned, but there was hope he'd grab some playing time following the demotion of Lonnie Chisenhall. ESPN Fantasy reports that Raburn has been dropped from 35.6% of baseball leagues over the past week. He's now owned in just 32.1%, a number that's still too high.

  • Sun, May 19
    • Matt Carpenter has hit safely in all but two May games.
Advice: The young infielder is third in the NL with 33 runs scored. Carpenter's slash line of .263/.333/.442 in April was solid, but he's really turned up the heat in May, batting .375/.470/.482. If Carpenter can convert some of his doubles (14) into home runs (three), he'll eradicate a fantasy weakness to this point. Despite his hot stick, Carpenter has driven in only 14 runs. He's not a threat to run, either.

    • Maicer Izturis went 1-for-4 with a single in Saturday's loss to the Yankees.
Advice: Izturis isn't walking or making contact this season, and you already know his swing is punchless. Toronto was hoping for more than a .218/.242/.331 slash line when they signed Izturis from the Angels over the winter to a three-year, $9 million deal and the Jays recently sat him in three of four games.

    • Dodgers activated 2B Mark Ellis from the 15-day disabled list.

    • Mark Ellis was removed early from Friday's rehab game as a precautionary measure due to poor field conditions.
Advice: Ellis was supposed to play four innings and receive two at bats, but a rainy night at Double-A Chattanooga forced him out after only three innings and one at-bat. It's certainly encouraging news to hear that it wasn't an injury related setback that caused the early exit.

    • Chris Getz hasn't collected a hit since May 4.
Advice: He hasn't played since May 13 and owns an ugly .170 OPS in 18 plate appearances this month. Getz has never been much of a hitter, but his .193/.221/.301 slash line in 2013 resets the bar to a new low. Kansas City is making due with Elliot Johnson and Miguel Tejada at second, which tells you all you need to know about their opinion of Getz. With additional help on the way from the farm, Getz may have just squandered his last opportunity to seize a starting major league gig.

    • Robinson Cano launched a pair of two-run homers in Saturday's win over the Blue Jays.
Advice: It was the 12th multi-homer game of his career and his second of the season. The 30-year-old is now tied for the American League lead with 12 homers. He's the cream of the crop among fantasy second baseman and could get even better as the Yankees' lineup gets healthier.

  • Thu, May 16
    • Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner said Thursday that the club continues to keep in touch with Robinson Cano's representatives.
Advice: Cano left Scott Boras for Jay-Z's Roc Nation last month, with Brodie Van Wagenen from CAA handling contract negotiations. "We've had several conversations with Brodie, just as we did with Scott and a lot of it is procedural," said Steinbrenner. "But we're going to continue in the weeks to come to work through things and try to come to an agreement." Cano is due to become a free agent after the season and could command a deal approaching $200 million. Still, Steinbrenner is optimistic that they'll be able to keep him in pinstripes for life.

    • Adam Rosales hit a go-ahead homer off James Shields in the eighth in Oakland's 2-1 defeat of Kansas City on Friday.
Advice: The A's had been going with Eric Sogard against righties and Rosales against lefties, but Rosales drew the assignment against Shields tonight and came through with the big blast. As poorly as Sogard has hit, the A's will probably go with Rosales regularly for now.

    • Angels claimed INF Chris Nelson off waivers from the Yankees.
Advice: Nelson was DFA'd by the Yankees earlier this week and batted just .222 (8-for-36) with two doubles and two RBI in 10 games since being traded. He should provide depth at third base behind Alberto Callaspo with the Angels. Scott Cousins has been dropped from the 40-man roster in a corresponding move.

Advice: He was cleared to make room for David Adams on the active roster. Nelson was acquired from the Rockies two weeks ago and batted .222 (8-for-36) with two doubles and two RBI in 10 games with the club. He should draw some interest on waivers.

    • Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Friday that Jerry Hairston Jr. (knee, groin) had "a little bit of a setback."
Advice: Hairston was placed on the disabled list earlier this month with a left groin strain, but he's now dealing with a knee issue. The setback means that he won't be activated from the DL next week when first eligible. The Dodgers are expected to send Hairston on a rehab assignment before he's cleared to return.

    • Marco Scutaro went 3-for-5 with an RBI single and a run scored Friday against the Rockies.
Advice: Ho-hum, just another multi-hit night for the hottest hitter in the game. Scutaro now has a 16-game hitting streak and has raised his batting average from .215 to .327 in the process. The 37-year-old is not going to provide much in the way of pop or speed, but keep running him out there in all formats until he cools down.

Advice: Altuve was on the bereavement list for the past five days, but it didn't show in his first game back. Altuve just continued to hit, raising his average to .342 in the process. Advice: Kipnis finished the night 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI, and was also caught stealing. After the first two hitters were retired in the tenth, Drew Stubbs walked and Michael Bourn reached on an infield single before Kipnis' dramatic blast off Lucas Luetge. • Martin Prado is batting .275 in May.
Advice: Slowly but surely, Prado is digging himself out of an awful early-season slump. In his first month with the Snakes, Prado slashed an anemic .217/.266/.348. Over 15 games this month, he's batting a reasonable .275/.339/.333. It's certainly not the start Arizona expected after acquiring Prado in the Justin Upton trade and subsequently signed him to a four-year, $40 million contract extension. Sporting his trademark multi-position eligibility and playing in cozy Chase Field, now might be the time to buy low. Prado entered the year a .319/.370/.447 career hitter in Arizona.
