    • Tim Stauffer pitched 5 2/3 innings in relief Wednesday, allowing one run and striking out seven Cardinals.
Advice: Tonight's showing should get Stauffer back into the Padres rotation, so give him a look in NL-only leagues. There are still questions about his arm, but he a pretty effective starter in 2011.

    • Burch Smith lasted just one-plus innings Wednesday and gave up four runs in a loss to the Cardinals.
Advice: We were surprised Smith wasn't pulled from the rotation last week with his ERA sitting at 15.63. Now it's up to 18.41. He has to be a goner this time, and Tim Stauffer, who replaced him tonight and allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings, is the obvious choice to replace him.

    • Burch Smith gave up five runs and three homers in 5 1/3 innings Friday in a no-decision against the Nationals.
Advice: Smith struck out eight and walked just one, but there was no overcoming the homers. He has a 15.63 ERA after two starts, so his rotation spot is tenuous at best.

    • Ubaldo Jimenez allowed six runs over four innings in the Indians' loss to the Tigers on Wednesday.
Advice: Jimenez had been on a bit of a roll before Wednesday, having not allowed more than two runs in any of his previous four starts. But the Tigers got to Jimenez for seven hits and three walks in his shortest outing since April 16. His next start will come Monday against the Reds.

    • Tyler Lyons earned a win in his major league debut after allowing one run and four hits in seven innings Wednesday against the Padres.
Advice: Lyons struck out four and walked just one. He needed a mere 81 pitches to get through seven before turning the ball over to Trevor Rosenthal. Lyons doesn't have the best of stuff, but he's a strike-thrower with a very good team behind him, something that might give him a little value in NL-only leagues. He'll get the Royals in Kansas City next.

    • Cardinals purchased the contract of LHP Tyler Lyons from Triple-A Memphis.
Advice: Lyons will take Jaime Garcia's place in the rotation and make the start Wednesday against the Padres. The 25-year-old southpaw owns a 4.47 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over eight starts this season in Triple-A and is only a band-aid until Jake Westbrook (elbow) is ready to return. He's unlikely to be fantasy relevant.

    • Tyler Lyons will be called up to start on Wednesday against the Padres.
Advice: It will be Lyons' major league debut. A former ninth-round pick, Lyons has put up a 4.47 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over eight starts at Triple-A Memphis this season. He's taking Jaime Garcia's spot in the rotation but is not guaranteed any more than the one start and should be avoided for fantasy purposes.

    • Justin Verlander allowed five runs over five innings but earned the win Wednesday as the Tigers beat the Indians.
Advice: Verlander had to work for his fifth win, needing 110 pitches to get through five. He gave up 10 hits, including a home run, but was aided by his team putting up nine runs in the same span. It marks the third-straight start in which Verlander has been less-than-great, seeing his ERA rise from 1.55 to 3.66 since May 5. There's still little reason to worry, though, and he'll take the mound again Monday against the Pirates.

    • Clay Buchholz moved to 7-0 on Wednesday after holding the White Sox to one run over seven innings.
Advice: The Red Sox won the game 6-2. Buchholz was brilliant yet again, yielding only five hits while fanning four batters. He has a 1.73 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 73/27 K/BB ratio in 72 2/3 total innings this season and should be able to keep the dominance going next week in an interleague matchup against the struggling Phillies.

    • John Lannan (quad) is scheduled to face hitters next Wednesday.
Advice: It will be the first time he's done so since going on the disabled list. Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said Lannan "is doing very well. He feels good." The left-hander could rejoin the rotation in a few weeks if all goes well.

    • John Lannan (quad) threw a bullpen session on Saturday afternoon in Clearwater, Florida.
Advice: Lannan will throw off a mound again on Monday and should then progress to simulated games. If all goes well, he will join the Phillies at some point in early June. He's been on the disabled list since April 18 with a quad strain.

    • Twins optioned RHP Vance Worley to Triple-A Rochester.
Advice: The Twins acquired Worley from the Phillies over the winter in hopes that he would be a productive member of the starting rotation, but he has been anything but. After being knocked around for eight runs in 3 2/3 innings Wednesday by the Braves, the 25-year-old has an ugly 7.21 ERA across 10 starts. If Worley can turn things around in the minors, he figures to get another chance soon. No word yet on whether Kyle Gibson will be the choice to replace him, but don't count it out.

    • Kevin Slowey left Wednesday's start against the Phillies after the fifth inning with a left lat strain.
Advice: The Marlins are calling him day-to-day, so it's evidently a minor strain. He will be reevaluated on Thursday before it's determined whether he can make his next start. Slowey was pitching well Wednesday before getting hurt, tossing five innings of one-run ball on six hits and no walks while recording six strikeouts.

    • Brandon Maurer allowed seven runs in three innings as the Mariners lost to the Angels on Wednesday.
Advice: After two rough outings to start the season, Maurer had been better of late. But he struggled from the outset Wednesday, giving up five runs in the first inning and a run in each of the next two. His next scheduled start is Tuesday against the Padres.

    • Alex Cobb will move up a day in the rotation to start Sunday against the Yankees.
Advice: Jake Odorizzi was originally on turn for the assignment, but he will start Monday against the Marlins instead. Cobb allowed one run in 6 1/3 innings in Tuesday's win over the Blue Jays and holds a 2.73 ERA through nine starts this season.

    • Alex Cobb went 6 1/3 innings, allowing just one run, as the Rays beat the Blue Jays on Tuesday.
Advice: Cobb had a bit of a strange game, as he allowed just a solo home run to Colby Rasmus but only struck out two batters on the outing. Still, it was effective enough to pick up his fifth win of the season, and he's now got a 2.73 ERA through nine starts. His next start, Monday against the Marlins, sets up very nicely for the 25-year-old.

    • Ross Wolf allowed one run in five innings Wednesday against the A's to pick up his first big-league win.
Advice: Wolf entered the day 0-1 in 25 career appearances, all in relief. The journeyman was drafted by the Marlins way back in 2002, and his previous major league appearances had come with the Marlins in 2007 and the A's in 2010. He's probably going to head back to Triple-A now, but he put himself in position for another callup later with the nice showing.
      (Rotoworld.com)
  • Tue, May 21
    • Ross Wolf will be recalled from Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday to start against the A's.
Advice: Nick Tepesch has a blister on his right middle finger, so Wolf is going to take the mound in his place. Wolf has posted a promising 1.85 ERA and 25/9 K/BB ratio in 34 innings this season at the Triple-A level, but the 30-year-old right-hander is not a great fantasy streamer.

    • Jeremy Hellickson pitched a season-high eight innings and allowed two runs Wednesday against the Blue Jays.
Advice: Hellickson left with a one-run lead, but that was blown right away by Fernando Rodney. It was still a nice outing for Hellickson, going down as just his third quality start of the season. He allowed four hits, walked one and struck out four.

    • Jorge De La Rosa improved to 6-3 after limiting the Diamondbacks to one run in 5 1/3 innings Wednesday.
Advice: De La Rosa has been strong so far in his first full year back from back from Tommy John surgery. The guess here is that he will wear down this summer -- he's pitched more than 130 innings just once in his career -- but he's been quite an asset for the Rockies so far.
      (Rotoworld.com)
  • Sat, May 18
    • Jorge De La Rosa was tagged for five runs in five innings Friday in a win over the Giants.
Advice: De La Rosa gave up nine hits and one walk and only registered one strikeout. It was quite a contrast for the southpaw, as he entered Friday's outing with a 14-inning scoreless streak and 12 scoreless frames at Coors Field this season. Still, the Rockies' offense powered him to the victory. De La Rosa is 5-3 with a 3.58 ERA through nine starts this season, but he needs more strikeouts to be interesting again in fantasy leagues.

    • John Danks (shoulder) will be activated from the disabled list to make his season debut Friday against the Marlins.
Advice: White Sox manager Robin Ventura finally made the decision official on Wednesday night. Danks posted a 3.18 ERA during his four rehab starts, but he also had a 15/13 K/BB ratio and is still dealing with diminished velocity. Mixed leaguers should stay away for now.

    • John Danks (shoulder) went 4 2/3 innings Saturday in his third minor league rehab start.
Advice: If everything checks out with the left-hander early this week, he should be cleared to join the White Sox starting rotation on Friday night against the Marlins. Danks has been on the shelf all year and makes for a decent waiver stash right now in AL-only fantasy leagues. Since he's coming off shoulder surgery and still rebuilding his arm strength, it might not be wise to trust him right out of the gate in standard mixed formats. Even against Miami.

    • Bud Norris (back) expects to make his next scheduled start.
Advice: Norris has left each of his last two starts with lower back spasms, but both times his removal was considered precautionary. He received massage treatment Wednesday and thinks "the prevention process of taking care of it now and getting me out of the game will help." Assuming he doesn't have a setback over the next few days, the righty will likely face the Rockies on Monday.

    • Bud Norris left Tuesday's start against the Royals following six scoreless innings after aggravating his back injury.
Advice: Norris was originally supposed to start Sunday after leaving his previous outing with back spasms but was pushed back just in case. Obviously, it appears that he's not over the ailment. The righty gave up just five hits and two walks over six frames before exiting Tuesday. The Astros should provide an update on his status after the game.

    • Stephen Strasburg pitched seven innings of one-run ball, striking out seven, in a no-decision against the Giants on Tuesday.
Advice: Strasburg has allowed just two earned runs in his last three starts, dropping his ERA from 3.45 to 2.66. That overstates how well he's pitched -- he's given up nine unearned runs this season -- but tonight's performance was maybe the most impressive one he's put together this year and should give him something to build on.

    • Hyun-Jin Ryu held the Brewers to two runs in 7 1/3 innings in the Dodgers' 9-2 victory Wednesday.
Advice: It's the seventh time in 10 big-league starts that Ryu has allowed two earned runs or fewer. It's curious that his strikeout rate has dipped of late -- he has just 14 K's in his past four starts combined -- but he has his ERA down to 3.30.

    • There is no timetable for when Ivan Nova (triceps) will be activated from the disabled list.
Advice: Nova's triceps doesn't appear to be an issue anymore, but the Yankees don't seem eager to add him to the roster. The righty has already appeared in multiple extended spring games and, according to manager Joe Girardi, "felt good" during a bullpen session Wednesday. "We'll make sure he feels OK and we'll go from there," Girardi said. With Andy Pettitte (trapezius muscle) likely to return soon, Nova might wind up being optioned to Triple-A or being used as a long man.

    • Paul Maholm allowed just an unearned run over 7 1/3 innings in defeating the Twins on Wednesday.
Advice: Unfortunately, Maholm's two bad starts this year were really bad, because he's given up just nine earned runs in the other eight. This is the fourth time he's gone without allowing a single earned run. Overall, he's 6-4 with a 3.38 ERA.

    • Jeff Samardzija held the Pirates to one run over seven innings on Wednesday but took the loss.
Advice: Samardzija was excellent, fanning eight batters and allowing only three hits and one walk. But he got exactly zero support from the Chicago offense and thus fell to 2-6 on the year. The right-hander has an ace-like 3.25 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 72/22 K/BB ratio in 63 2/3 innings this season and should keep rolling next week against the White Sox.

Advice: Wilson had pitched well in three losses prior to Wednesday's start, so he took matters into his own hands against the Mariners. Wilson struck out 10 batters in his eight innings, and he now owns a 3.39 ERA through 10 starts. He'll take his next turn Monday against the Dodgers.

Advice: Lyles has made five starts in May, with Wednesday's being his best of the bunch. He struck out just three but limited the Royals to six hits in his six innings. Aside from one bad start in which he allowed eight runs in four innings, Lyles has been serviceable for the Astros thus far. His next start will be Tuesday against the Rockies.

Advice: Odorizzi originally lined up to face the Yankees on Sunday, but Alex Cobb will get the call instead. • Jake Odorizzi gave up three runs in five innings in his Rays' debut Monday against the Indians.
Advice: Odorizzi allowed two runs in the first inning and one in the second, but he settled down from there and was able to keep the Rays in the ballgame. He gave up five hits and just one walk while striking out six batters. The 23-year-old right-hander is worth a shot in AL-only and deeper mixed leagues while David Price is sidelined, though he has a tough matchup against the Yankees this weekend.

    • Rays manager Joe Maddon said he planned to have Jake Odorizzi make all of the starts in place of the injured David Price (triceps).
Advice: It could possibly only be a couple starts, as the Rays are optimistic that Price will not need to miss much time. Odorizzi will make his Rays' debut on Tuesday against the Blue Jays. He's worth a shot in deeper mixed leagues.

Advice: The move won't be made official until Sunday, but the Rays have confirmed what was suspected since David Price (triceps) went on the disabled list. The Blue Jays are not a very pitcher-friendly opponent, but Odorizzi is talented enough to warrant a roster spot in deeper mixed leagues.
