  • Adam Ottavino throws from flat ground
Adam Ottavino (elbow) began throwing from flat ground on Thursday.

Advice: It's the first time the right-hander has been able to throw since undergoing Tommy John surgery in May. He won't be ready to rejoin the Rockies bullpen until midway through the 2016 season. Rotoworld.com Today, 5:55 pm

  • Stephen Piscotty not in Cardinals lineup
Stephen Piscotty is not in the Cardinals starting lineup on Thursday.

Advice: It's certainly a well-deserved day of rest for Piscotty who has started the team's last 29 contests. Piscotty has been on a tear offensively, slashing .316/.349/.538 with four homers and 20 RBI in 117 at-bats. Matt Carpenter will draw a rare start at first base in his absence. • Cubs designate Brian Schlitter for assignment
Cubs designated RHP Brian Schlitter for assignment.

Advice: Schlitter was the roster casualty to create room on the 40-man for Fernando Rodney who was acquired from the Mariners on Thursday. He could attract interest on waivers from teams in search of bullpen depth. Rotoworld.com Today, 5:11 pm

  • Chris Tillman struggles in loss to Royals
Chris Tillman struggled in Thursday's loss to the Royals, surrendering four runs on nine hits over his six frames.

Advice: Tillman walked one while striking out one on the afternoon. After three scoreless innings to begin the ballgame, the Royals scratched out runs in each of the next three frames, including a solo homer by Pablo Orlando. While he has been much better in the second half of the season, Tillman will still carry a troublesome 4.58 ERA and 1.33 WHIP into Tuesday's matchup against the Rays. Rotoworld.com Today, 4:13 pm
  • Dan Haren knocked around in loss to Giants
Dan Haren was knocked around in a losing effort against the Giants on Thursday, surrendering five runs on six hits over his 6 1/3 innings of work.

Advice: The veteran right-hander walked three and struck out four on the afternoon. The big blow against him came in the third inning when Marlon Byrd smashed a three-run homer. Haren has really struggled through five starts with his new club, registering a 6.31 ERA and serving up an unfathomable eight home runs in only 25 2/3 innings. He'll look to get back on track on Tuesday against the Reds. Rotoworld.com Today, 4:04 pm
  • Tulowitzki hit-less in five at-bats vs TEX
Troy Tulowitzki went 0-for-5 with a strikeout in Thursday afternoon's loss to the Rangers.

Advice: Tulowitzki and fellow star Josh Donaldson combined for an 0-for-8 day and the Jays only scored one run as a team. Since being traded from the Rockies, Tulo is hitting a paltry .225/.325/.353, though he has picked up six hits in his last four games. Just none on Thursday. Rotoworld.com Today, 3:02 pm
  • Johnson (rib) out 4-6 weeks
Reed Johnson (rib) is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

Advice: Johnson was originally believed to have a strained oblique, but he actually has a cracked rib. There's a good chance his season is over. Rotoworld.com Today, 1:41 pm

  • Victorino lofts sacrifice fly, fans twice
Shane Victorino went 0-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and two strikeouts in Thursday's win over the Tigers.

Advice: Victorino's ninth-inning sacrifice fly pushed the score to 2-0 and gave the Angels a bit of breathing room. They would win by that final score. The RBI was just the veteran outfielder's second since being traded from the Red Sox. He's 9-for-46 in 20 games with his new team. Injuries have limited him to just 53 games this season. Rotoworld.com Today, 1:17 pm
  • J.D. Martinez hits second triple of season
J.D. Martinez went 1-for-3 with a triple in Thursday's loss to the Angels.

Advice: Martinez's triple was the only extra-base hit the Tigers scraped together in the 2-0 loss. It was his second of the season and eighth three-bagger of his career. When he's not flashing his wheels, he's hitting .292/.353/.567 with 34 homers and 87 RBI. Martinez is in the midst of his most productive season at the major league level. • Cabrera whiffs twice in loss to Angels
Miguel Cabrera went 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts in Thursday's loss to the Angels.

Advice: Cabrera was shut down by Angels starter Matt Shoemaker. The 0-for-3 snapped his 11-game hitting streak. The slugger missed a month-and-a-half with a calf injury, but when healthy, he's been the same ol' terrifying hitter we're accustomed to seeing. He's slashing .367/.469/.606 with 17 bombs and 65 RBI over 327 at-bats. Rotoworld.com Today, 1:01 pm

  • Johnson earns 10th save with perfect ninth
Jim Johnson pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 10th save of the season in Thursday's 1-0 win over the Reds.

Advice: With Kenley Jansen unavailable for the day, the Dodgers trotted Johnson out for the ninth as they clung to a 1-0 lead. Johnson refused to wilt under pressure and retired Eugenio Suarez, Jay Bruce and Jason Bourgeois in order to secure the tight save. Since being acquired by the Dodgers, the veteran relief arm has allowed 15 runs in 7 2/3 innings. Eight of those runs came in a single appearance, as the Pirates rocked him in 2/3 of an inning on August 9. Rotoworld.com Today, 12:53 pm
  • Dodgers cut ties with INF Alberto Callaspo
    Dodgers released INF Alberto Callaspo.

Advice: Callaspo was designated for assignment by the Dodgers on August 19 to open up a roster spot for Chase Utley. Callaspo, 32, is batting just .235/.315/.278 in 97 games this year between Los Angeles and Atlanta. Rotoworld.com Today, 11:15 am

  • Rob Refsnyder to rejoin Yankees in Sept.
Rob Refsnyder will rejoin the Yankees in early September.

Advice: He'll be one of several September callups for New York. Refsnyder went 2-for-12 (.167) in a short stay with the Yankees earlier this season. He does have a nice skillset, but the 24-year-old probably won't hold fantasy value in a utility role over the final four weeks. Rotoworld.com Today, 10:49 am

  • Freese (finger) could return early next week
David Freese (finger) is expected to be activated from the disabled list early next week in Oakland.

Advice: Freese has been with Triple-A Salt Lake since Sunday and will begin playing third base there on Friday. The third baseman has been on the disabled list since July 23 with a non-displaced fracture in his right index finger. He's hitting .240/.309/.397 with 11 home runs and 43 RBI in 90 games this season for the Angels. Rotoworld.com Today, 8:35 am

  • Lorenzo Cain getting day off Thursday vs. O's
Lorenzo Cain is out of the Royals' lineup Thursday.

Advice: Jarrod Dyson will start in center field and Paulo Orlando will start in left field in the Royals' series finale against the Orioles. It's just a day of rest for Cain, who's been one of the best players in baseball in 2015. Rotoworld.com Today, 8:16 am
  • Johnson dealing with broken rib, not oblique
Reed Johnson said an MRI Wednesday showed a broken rib, not a strained oblique as originally suspected.

Advice: Johnson said he believed the injury was a hairline fracture that was made worse by a sneeze. He's out until at least mid-September and may be done for the year. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 8:02 pm

  • Martinez blasts 34th homer as Tigers top LAA
J.D. Martinez blasted his 34th home run of the season, finishing 2-for-4 in Wednesday's victory over the Angels.

Advice: Martinez led off the fourth inning with a double but was stranded. In the fifth, he made it a four-run frame when he drove a Hector Santiago pitch to left field for a two-run round-tripper. Along with 34 homers, Martinez has plated 87 runs while batting .291/.353/.564 in what has been a tremendous follow-up to his breakout in 2014. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 7:17 pm
  • Cabrera stays hot, homers as Tigers roll
Miguel Cabrera walked and hit a two-run home run in four trips to the plate as the Tigers rolled to a win over the Angels on Wednesday.

Advice: Cabrera made it a 3-0 game in the bottom of the fifth when he sent a Hector Santiago offering over the fence in left-center for a two-run homer. He's hit safely in 11 straight games following a hitless return from the disabled list. His .370/.473/.611 triple-slash line has somehow flown under the radar. Cabrera has also hit 17 home runs while knocking in 65 runs. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 7:15 pm

  • Tulo collects three hits, RBI against Rangers
Troy Tulowitzki went 3-for-5 with an RBI single and a run scored Tuesday against the Rangers.

Advice: Tulo's RBI single in the ninth inning tied the game and eventually paved the way for a Jays comeback win. The shortstop is hitting just .239 since joining the Jays but has scored 21 runs in 23 games. Tulowitzki is batting .287/.346/.451 overall. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 9:15 pm
  • Cabrera has 3 hits, 3 RBI in loss to Angels
Miguel Cabrera went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI but the Tigers fell short to the Angels on Tuesday.

Advice: Cabrera brought in three runs with a double and later scored in the third inning, helping erase a four-run deficit. The Tigers' pitching wasn't able to take advantage, however. Cabrera is white hot right now as he's on a 10-game hitting streak of which nine are of the multi-hit variety. He has an incredible .371/.473/.604 triple-slash line with 16 home runs and 63 RBI despite losing over a month to injury. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 8:22 pm

  • Martinez hits 3-run homer but the Tigers lose
J.D. Martinez doubled and hit a three-run home run across five at-bats in Monday's loss to the Reds.

Advice: Martinez started the scoring, plating three with a home run off of Keyvius Sampson in the top of the first inning. It was a lead the Tigers would hold until deflating in a 10-run bottom of the sixth. Martinez has gone yard 33 times this season, knocking in 84 runs while batting .288/.350/.554. It has truly been a remarkable year for the Astros castoff. Rotoworld.com Monday, 7:49 pm
  • Tillman saddled with loss in quality start
Chris Tillman pitched well in Saturday's loss to the Twins, allowing three runs on four hits over 6 2/3 innings.

Advice: Tillman struck out six, walked two and allowed a singular run in the sixth, plus two more in the seventh. He holds a 4.51 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 91/47 K/BB ratio across 136 2/3 innings this season, but has allowed more than three runs just twice in his last 10 starts. Tillman's next scheduled outing is a road toughie against the Royals. Rotoworld.com Saturday, 9:43 pm
  • Miguel Cabrera doubles three times in loss
Miguel Cabrera had a nice night at the plate in Friday's loss to the Rangers, going 3-for-4 with three doubles.

Advice: He has been on an absolute tear since his return from the disabled list, hitting .500 (13-for-26) with a homer, six doubles, five RBI and eight walks. He's now slashing a robust .361/.470/.596 on the year with 16 homers and 59 RBI. Rotoworld.com Friday, 7:28 pm

  • Freese to begin rehab assignment on Sunday
David Freese (finger) will begin a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday.

Advice: Freese was able to throw a ball without any issues on Thursday and Friday, which was the last hurdle he needed to clear before appearing in live game action. He should be able to rejoin the Angels lineup before the end of the month. Rotoworld.com Friday, 4:37 pm

  • David Freese (finger) throws with no issues
David Freese (finger) threw with full finger pressure on the ball on Thursday for the second straight day.

Advice: Freese has been hitting for a while with no issues but only recently has been able to throw. He's nearing a rehab assignment and could have a shot to rejoin the Angels before the end of the month. It seems more likely, however, that they'll wait until rosters expand to activate him. • Miguel Cabrera reaches four times
Miguel Cabrera went 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored against the Rangers on Thursday.

Advice: Cabrera is 10-for-22 with eight walks in six games since coming off the disabled list. One has to wonder if both David Price and Yoenis Cespedes would still be Tigers right now if he hadn't gone down with the calf injury. Rotoworld.com Thursday, 7:23 pm

  • Freese (finger) 'moving in right direction'
Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Tuesday that David Freese's (finger) rehab is going "slowly, but it’s moving in the right direction."

Advice: Freese threw Tuesday without pressure on his broken finger and the hope is that he’ll be able to throw with pressure by the end of the week. He's already missed a month of action but finally does appear to be making some progress. It seems unlikely that Freese will return before September. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 6:58 am

  • Martinez homers, Tigers defeat the Cubs
J.D. Martinez went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a sacrifice fly in Tuesday's win against the Cubs.

Advice: Martinez pushed the Tigers' lead to 3-0 in the first inning when he drilled a Jason Hammel pitch over the fence in center field. Now with 31 home runs, he's on pace to finish the season with 42 -- quite an impressive feat after setting a career-high with 23 last year. Martinez has also knocked in 79 runs while batting .288/.349/.553. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 11:11 pm
  • Piscotty notches first stolen base vs. Giants
Stephen Piscotty went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in a loss to the Giants on Tuesday.

Advice: Piscotty has hits in four straight games as he remains one of the only Cardinals hitters producing much offense recently. The stolen base was the first for Piscotty in his career. The outfielder is hitting .337/.368/.494 with 11 runs and 11 RBI through his first 26 games. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 10:18 pm
  • Tillman's 7 solid frames lead O's past A's
Chris Tillman held the Athletics to two runs in seven innings, earning the win on Monday.

Advice: Tillman rebounded nicely after he was hit hard by the Mariners in his previous start. The right-hander gave up a pair of solo home runs to account for the damage. He gave up three hits overall, walked three, and struck out three. Over his last eight starts, Tillman has a 2.13 ERA. On the season, his ERA stands at 4.54 with a 1.34 WHIP and an 85/45 K/BB ratio over 130 innings. He'll face the Twins at home in his next start. Rotoworld.com Aug 17, 6:46 pm
