- Matsuzaka took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning, pitching the defending World Series champions past the Rays 2-0 Friday night in the ALCS opener. He allowed four hits, four walks and struck out nine in seven innings.(STATS, Inc.)
Advice: Matsuzaka, 18-3 overall, also got off to a shaky start, walking leadoff man Akinori Iwamura and two of the next four batters to load the bases with two outs. Opponents were hitless in 14 at-bats against the right-hander with the bases loaded during the regular season, and he got out of another jam by retiring Cliff Floyd. - RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka managed to wriggle out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and continues to build on an amazing stretch that saw hitters go 0-for-14 against him with the bases loaded this season. The trend has been uncanny all season long for Matsuzaka, who has continuously flitted in and out of trouble without ever really suffering many dire consequences on the pitcher's mound. "He had a little bit of a high wire act in the first innings," said manager Terry Francona. "But then he got into a good grove and the ball had a lot of life through the strike zone."(Yahoo! Sports)

- Philadelphia Phillies SP Brett Myers (ankle) twisted his right ankle while running the bases during the third inning of Game 2 of the NLCS Friday, Oct. 10, against the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to Sam Donnellon of the Philadelphia Daily News. Myers remained in the game, but said the ankle didn't bother him until he was through.(KFFL)
- RHP Brett Myers laced a bases-loaded single inside the first-base bag to spark a four-run third-inning rally Friday. In the fourth, he stumbled out of the batter's box, hit himself in the head with the bat and still legged out a dribbler along the third-base line for his third hit of the game. Standing on first base, Myers shook his head, rolled his eyes and caught his breath. Quite simply, some things in baseball defy explanation. Myers, a .116 career hitter, became the eighth pitcher to collect three hits in a playoff game and only the third since 1924, according to baseball-reference.com. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he is the first pitcher to have three hits and three RBIs in a playoff game since Cincinnati's Dutch Ruether in the 1919 World Series. And the Chicago White Sox lost that series on purpose. "I would have rather gone out there and thrown seven solid innings and get three hits, but it worked out for us to where those three runs I drove in made a big difference in the game," said Myers, who allowed five runs in five innings of an 8-5 victory. 3B Greg Dobbs jokingly called Myers a "difference-making hitter." And suddenly slumping slugger Ryan Howard said, "If (Myers) goes out there next time and steals a base, I'm leaving."(Yahoo! Sports)
- Myers did better at the plate than on the mound in the Phillies' 8-5 win over the Dodgers in Game 2 of the NLCS. He was 3-for-3 with three RBIs, and allowed five runs, six hits and four walks in five innings.(STATS, Inc.)

- RHP Brett Myers marched into his pre-start press conference Thursday with his chest puffed out and a bat resting on his shoulder, making him look more like a guard at Buckingham Palace than the Phillies' Game 2 starter. "I figured y'all would want to talk about my hitting," Myers said. "So, I brought a bat." Myers had two lengthy at-bats in the NLDS against Milwaukee's CC Sabathia. "He's 100 miles an hour," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said of Myers. "I'm not necessarily talking velocity. I'm just talking about his aggressiveness. I watched him on TV as a closer (last season). He's never backed off. The kid's aggressive, and he's going to give you everything he has."(Yahoo! Sports)

- 3B Greg Dobbs, a left-handed hitter, figured he'd get a chance to start at third base for the Phillies because the Dodgers were starting three right-handed pitchers to open the NLCS. But Dobbs sat on the bench for Game 1 against sinkerballer Derek Lowe. He started Game 2 on Friday night and went 2-for-3 with an intentional walk and figured in the Phillies' four-run rallies in the second and third innings. "Any time that you can be in the starting lineup in the playoffs, that's what you dream about," Dobbs said. "It's another reason you prepare so hard. The adrenaline's running.
