Advice: Lowe cleared waivers and was granted his unconditional release. The 39-year-old right-hander posted a 9.00 ERA in 13 innings with the Rangers and will look to continue his career elsewhere rather than accept an assignment to Triple-A Round Rock.

    • Rangers designated RHP Derek Lowe for assignment.
Advice: The move clears a spot for Monday's starter, Josh Lindblom. Lowe has struggled in a mop-up role this season, posting an ugly 9.00 ERA in 13 innings. The Rangers are paying him $1.25 million in 2013.

    • Carlos Zambrano allowed one (unearned) run over four innings Thursday at extended spring training.
Advice: Zambrano was also good in his first extended spring training start last week, striking out five batters over two scoreless innings. He yielded four hits and a walk on Thursday while fanning four. The right-hander could be an option for the Phils sooner than expected.

    • Carlos Zambrano threw two scoreless innings and had five strikeouts Saturday in extended spring training.
Advice: The Phillies' current plan calls for Zambrano to pitch in another extended spring game next week before possibly sending him to a minor league affiliate. He was able to throw 44 pitches Saturday and will continue to be stretched out as a starter. Zambrano will be an option for the Phillies' rotation at some point this season.

    • Joba Chamberlain (oblique) is scheduled to throw two inning Saturday in extended spring training.
Advice: Chamberlain pitched a scoreless inning for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre over a week ago, but the Yankees didn't think he was ready yet. However, if all goes well, there's a chance he could be activated late next week. The 27-year-old has been sidelined since April 27 with a strained oblique.

Advice: It wasn't too long ago that Herrera was threatening Greg Holland for the closer role, but he has struggled to keep the ball in the ballpark this season, surrendering eight home runs in just 20 1/3 innings. He'll attempt to straighten things out in the minors.

    • Phillies placed RHP Mike Adams on the 15-day disabled list with a right back strain.

    • Brett Myers (elbow) will make at least one more rehab start.
Advice: Myers' velocity was down on Wednesday in his second rehab outing with Double-A Akron, and he walked four while allowing three runs over 4 1/3 frames. Assuming his velocity comes back up the next time out, he could rejoin the Indians' rotation after that.

    • Andrew Miller is proving his 2012 breakout was no fluke, posting a 3.86 ERA and 24/8 K/BB rate over 20 appearances.
Advice: The sixth overall pick in 2006 has successfully saved his career in Boston's bullpen. Miller went 21-29 with a 5.79 ERA between 2006-2011, mostly as a starter for the Tigers, Marlins and Red Sox. He hasn't started a game in the last two seasons and has rewarded Boston with a 3.48 ERA over 73 appearances. Miller's current strikeout rate is by far the best of his career.

    • Troy Patton holds a 4.05 ERA over 18 appearances.
Advice: The left-hander put up a 2.43 ERA over 54 appearances last season in his first full year in the majors. His encore isn't going as smoothly due to an increased rate of walks (more than double what it was last season) and decreased strikeouts (he's punching out 3.4 less batters per nine innings). Being increasingly hittable doesn't help either. After a 1.02 WHIP in 2012, Patton sits at 1.55 today.

    • Wade Davis allowed three runs over five innings but escaped with a no-decision as the Royals beat the Astros on Tuesday.
Advice: Davis was fortunate to hold the Astros to just three runs, as he gave up eight hits and four walks on the night. After a strong start to the season, Davis now owns a 5.91 ERA and has won just one start since April 17. Fortunately for Davis, the Royals don't have any better options to replace him in the rotation at this point. His next start will come Sunday against the Angels.

    • Hector Santiago took the loss Wednesday despite allowing just two runs in six innings against the Red Sox.
Advice: Santiago did his part, yielding only three hits while striking out nine, but the Chicago offense didn't provide him with very much support. The 25-year-old left-hander could be bumped from the White Sox rotation when John Danks is activated from the disabled list and will hold no further fantasy value if that happens.

    • Hector Santiago will get the start Wednesday in place of the injured Chris Sale (shoulder).
Advice: Santiago will be starting on short rest, though he lasted just 3 1/3 innings and 80 pitches in his last outing. It could be the left-hander's last start for a while, as he's an option to be bumped from the rotation when John Danks returns.

    • Hector Santiago lasted only 3 1/3 innings Saturday as the White Sox fell to the Angels.
Advice: Santiago cruised through the first three innings but simply lost it in the fourth after yielding a solo home run to Mark Trumbo to lead off the frame. His ERA jumped from 2.23 to 2.78 and his WHIP moved from 1.08 to 1.21. The regression should have been expected. Santiago will try to bounce back next week in an easy outing against the Marlins.

    • Jose Veras picked up his eighth save of the season as the Astros beat the Royals on Wednesday.
Advice: After a rough start to the year, Veras has settled into Houston's ninth-inning role nicely, converting his last six save opportunities and turning in seven consecutive scoreless outings. He now has a 3.32 ERA and 1.00 WHIP through 19 innings.

    • Jose Veras struck out two in a perfect ninth Monday to earn his seventh save.

    • Addison Reed picked up his 16th save on Tuesday in the White Sox' victory over the Red Sox.
Advice: Reed's 16 saves now rank behind only Jason Grilli and Mariano Rivera for the league lead, and he's blown just one opportunity on the year. The right-hander owns a 2.14 ERA and 1.05 WHIP, having struck out 24 batters in 21 innings. And after serving up six home runs last season, he's yet to be taken deep thus far. It's shaping up to be a big year for the young righty.

    • Glen Perkins blew his first save of the season in Tuesday's 5-4, extra-innings loss to the Braves.
Advice: Minnesota is having about as much success in Atlanta as they did during the 1991 World Series. Perkins was summoned in the ninth inning and recorded two quick outs before Evan Gattis blasted a 412-foot bomb over the left-field fence. The 30-year-old lefty remains a lighthouse in the dark night that is Minnesota's pitching corps. Perkins saved 16 games last year while registering a 2.56 ERA and now has eight saves, a 3.45 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 25/5 K/BB rate over 16 appearances in 2013.

Advice: The Reds don't seem concerned. "We're erring on the side of caution," Marshall said. "I told them I was little sore. We have some very capable arms come out of the bullpen a time or two this season so far. ... I needed this extra day of rest. I'll be back to the way I've been feeling."

    • Padres reliever Anthony Bass was charged with four runs in his second inning of work Tuesday against the Cardinals.
Advice: Bass was ripped off tonight. The first hitter to reach against him did so on a strikeout/wild pitch. The second had a clean single, but Yadier Molina followed with a double-play ball, only Everth Cabrera vacated second base way too early on the relay and wasn't given credit for the out. With runners on second and third with one out, Bud Black had Bass intentionally walk Jon Jay, and Daniel Descalso followed with a grand slam. That was certainly a mistake for Bass, but he could have been out of the inning before then and he didn't deserve for his ERA to jump from 2.60 to 3.64 tonight.

    • With Rafael Betancourt sidelined, Rex Brothers earned his first save of the year by pitching a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.
Advice: Brothers has allowed just one run in 21 1/3 innings this season, so he was an obvious choice to close in Betancourt's place. Since it currently appears that Betancourt will avoid the DL, Brothers isn't guaranteed additional saves.
      (Rotoworld.com)
  • Tue, May 21
    • Rex Brothers hasn't allowed a run since April 6.
Advice: And that run, surrendered to the Padres, is the only blemish on his campaign to this point. Brothers has six holds, a 0.47 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 20/7 K/BB ratio over 21 appearances. He's been Colorado's best reliever, but closer Rafael Betancourt is also pitching well for the 24-21 Rockies. Brothers could be Colorado's full-time closer next season, but he likely won't earn saves in 2013 barring injury.
