    • Evan Gattis hit his ninth home run of the season in the Braves' late win over the Twins on Tuesday.
Advice: It was another pinch-hit home run and it sent the game to extra innings. Gattis still has a weak .302 on-base percentage and doesn't play enough anymore to carry relevance in mixed fantasy leagues, but he should remain a dangerous bat off the Atlanta bench all year.

    • Padres reliever Anthony Bass was charged with four runs in his second inning of work Tuesday against the Cardinals.
Advice: Bass was ripped off tonight. The first hitter to reach against him did so on a strikeout/wild pitch. The second had a clean single, but Yadier Molina followed with a double-play ball, only Everth Cabrera vacated second base way too early on the relay and wasn't given credit for the out. With runners on second and third with one out, Bud Black had Bass intentionally walk Jon Jay, and Daniel Descalso followed with a grand slam. That was certainly a mistake for Bass, but he could have been out of the inning before then and he didn't deserve for his ERA to jump from 2.60 to 3.64 tonight.

    • Daniel Descalso went 3-for-3 with his first career grand slam and an RBI double in the Cardinals' 10-2 rout of the Padres on Tuesday.
Advice: Descalso's slam followed an intentional walk to Jon Jay. Descalso entered the game with an ugly .197/.265/.289 line, and he probably wouldn't have been in the lineup if not for David Freese's thumb injury. The home run was his seventh in 813 major league at-bats.

    • Aaron Harang was lit up for seven runs in 3 2/3 innings by the Angels on Tuesday.
Advice: Josh Hamilton and Howie Kendrick homered off him. Harang fell to 1-5 with an 8.58 ERA. The Mariners need to make a switch here, whether it's Jeremy Bonderman, Hector Noesi or James Paxton as the replacement. Erasmo Ramirez still isn't healthy, unfortunately.

    • Aaron Harang (back) threw a bullpen session Sunday with no issues and is in line to start on Tuesday in Anaheim.
Advice: Harang missed his last outing with some minor back stiffness, but he's alright now. The big righty holds a 7.30 ERA and 1.42 WHIP over five starts this season but does boast a 23/5 K/BB ratio over 24 2/3 frames.

    • The Mariners think Aaron Harang (back) will be ready to make his next start.
Advice: Harang was scratched from Thursday's outing due to a stiff lower back, but it appears that he's not going to need a DL stint unless he has a setback over the next few days. The big right-hander holds a 7.30 ERA and 1.42 WHIP over five starts this season.

    • Aaron Harang has been scratched from his start Thursday vs. the Yankees due to back stiffness.
Advice: Hector Noesi is filling in. The Mariners aren't sure yet whether Harang will need a stint on the 15-day disabled list. He has posted a hideous 7.30 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 24 2/3 innings (five starts) this season for Seattle.

    • Jimmy Paredes went 3-for-3 with his first home run of the season but the Astros lost to the Royals on Tuesday.
Advice: Paredes' homer, a three-run shot, gave the Astros a lead in the fourth inning. He also added two singles on the night to bring his line to .268/.311/.439 through 14 games since being recalled. With the release of Rick Ankiel, it seems Paredes will continue to see plenty of playing time in the Houston outfield.

    • Bud Norris held the Royals scoreless through six innings but took a no-decision as the Astros lost on Tuesday.
Advice: Norris left with a 3-0 lead, but the bullpen proceeded to allow seven runs in the next three innings to rob him of a win. He has a 3.86 ERA this year, but he's struck out just 35 batters through 56 innings and is likely due for some regression. His next start will come Monday against the Rockies.

    • Bud Norris left Tuesday's start against the Royals following six scoreless innings after aggravating his back injury.
Advice: Norris was originally supposed to start Sunday after leaving his previous outing with back spasms but was pushed back just in case. Obviously, it appears that he's not over the ailment. The righty gave up just five hits and two walks over six frames before exiting Tuesday. The Astros should provide an update on his status after the game.

    • Bud Norris (back) will have his next start pushed back to Tuesday against the Royals.
Advice: Norris left Monday's start against the Tigers with back spasms and will get some extra rest. Lucas Harrell will move up in the rotation to start Sunday against the Pirates.

    • MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reports the Reid Ryan will be named the new president of the Houston Astros.
Advice: Reid is the son of Nolan Ryan and currently runs the Triple-A Round Rock Express (an affiliate of the Rangers) and Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks (an affiliate of the Astros). He will be replacing George Postolos, who stepped down from the position of Astros president on Monday. Ryan will be officially introduced at a press conference Friday afternoon at Minute Maid Park.

    • Jerome Williams blanked the Mariners for eight innings to win Tuesday night.
Advice: Williams has been a savior for the Angels, going 3-1 with a 2.30 ERA in four starts and seven relief appearances. He now figures to keep his rotation spot after Jered Weaver returns. AL-only leaguers should keep riding him with the Royals and Astros next on the schedule.

    • Jerome Williams held the White Sox to two runs over six innings Thursday in a no-decision loss.
Advice: Williams allowed five hits and no walks, striking out three. He exited with a 4-2 lead, which Dane De La Rosa blew, costing Williams his third victory. Williams has been a surprisingly stabilizing force in the Angels' putrid starting rotation, allowing nine earned runs over 23 innings in four starts since joining. He has a tasty matchup next week when he takes the hill Wednesday against the Mariners.

    • Travis Snider launched a pinch-hit grand slam in Tuesday's win over the Cubs.
Advice: After getting Gaby Sanchez to fly out to shallow left with one out, Shawn Camp served up a fat pitch to Snider, who deposited it just over the right-center field wall. Snider has just two longballs this season, but they've both come over the last week.
      (Rotoworld.com)
  • Thu, May 16
    • Travis Snider went 3-for-5 and finally hit his first homer of the season Thursday in the Pirates' 7-1 defeat of the Brewers.
Advice: He also swiped his first base. Snider had zeroes in both categories through 35 games and 91 at-bats going into the night. He's actually hitting .292, but that's probably not going to continue, not with his strikeout rate. It's a must that he hit more homers if he's going to establish himself as a starter in the Pittsburgh outfield.

    • George Kottaras has just two hits this season.
Advice: Kottaras has started only four games this season and hasn't registered a hit since April 28. He's batting .125/.364/.375 this season, somehow drawing six walks in 21 plate appearances despite his limp bat.

    • Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Tuesday that Samuel Deduno will be called up from Triple-A Rochester to start Friday's game against the Tigers.
Advice: In other words, Kyle Gibson's major league debut will have to wait. Deduno, who had a breakthrough performance during the World Baseball Classic, has a 2.70 ERA and 17/10 K/BB ratio in 16 2/3 innings over three starts with Triple-A Rochester since returning from a groin injury. He'll have a pretty tough first matchup, so fantasy owners should steer clear for now.

    • Tony Sipp's walk rate (6.0) and strike-to-walk rate (1.38) are the highest and lowest of his career, respectively.
Advice: Sipp's only pitched 12 inning over 18 appearances, so it's not time for Kirk Gibson to panic, but the left-hander will be playing with fire if he can't iron out his control issues. His 3.75 ERA is better than last season's 4.42, but Sipp's peripherals suggest that he was a better hurler in 2012. The improvement in ERA is entirely tied to Sipp keeping the ball in play. He's surrendered only one bomb after giving up nine last year.

    • Colby Rasmus went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run, but the Blue Jays lost to the Rays on Tuesday.
Advice: The homer was Rasmus' seventh on the year, and he scored two runs in the game. Rasmus is doing his usual thing this year, hitting .234/.303/.433 through 42 games. With the recent call-up of Anthony Gose, Rasmus might see some of his playing time disappear in the coming weeks if he doesn't produce more games like Tuesday's.

    • Jonathan Herrera is batting .283/.327/.370 through 49 plate appearances.
Advice: If his slash numbers hold, Herrera will finish with the best offensive season of his career, topping the .694 OPS he mustered in 2010. Unfortunately, the utility infielder has scuffled in the field recently, recording three errors in his last 12 games.

    • Matt Joyce left Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays with right hamstring tightness.
Advice: The Rays are saying his removal was precautionary, so Joyce can safely be considered day-to-day. He figures to need at least a day or two of down time, though.

    • Matt Joyce finished 3-for-5 with a homer and five RBI in Saturday's 10-6 victory over the Orioles.
Advice: Joyce cranked a two-run homer in the top of the third inning and then drove in another two runs with a double as the Rays staged an impressive comeback in the top of the ninth. The 28-year-old remains a fringe outfielder in standard mixed fantasy leagues.

    • Joe Thatcher earned his fifth hold by tossing two-thirds of a scoreless inning against the Cardinals on Monday night.
Advice: When healthy, the southpaw has been terrific for the Padres. Between 2009-2011, he posted a 2.66 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 10.9 K/9 rate. This year he is 1-0 with a 2.13 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 10/1 K/BB rate over 21 appearances. As an effective LOOGY who calls PETCO home, Thatcher is a solid middle reliever in deeper NL-only formats.
