    Steven Kwan went 2-for-5 with a run scored against the Royals on Saturday.

  • Tanner Houck struggles in loss to Padres
    Tanner Houck gave up eight runs — seven earned — over 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Padres on Saturday.

    Advice: Houck has been fantastic for the overwhelming majority of 2024. There wasn’t anything fantastic about this outing, other than he gave reason for San Diego hitters to have some fun. The right-hander gave up nine hits with one walk, and while he was able to at least add four punchouts, they don’t compensate for giving up three homers. Houck hadn’t allowed more than three runs since April 12, so it’s fair to write this one off as a “pobody’s nerfect.” He’s scheduled to face the Yankees on Friday, and he’ll try and lower an ERA that jumped from 2.18 to 2.67 after this clunker.     Paul Goldschmidt went 1-for-4 with a solo homer against the Reds on Saturday.

    Advice: Goldschmidt took Carson Spiers deep for a solo homer in the sixth inning for his only hit of the game as the Cardinals fell to the Reds.   • Nears return to baseball activities
    Trout (knee) is getting close to returning to baseball activities, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

    Advice: Trout experienced some soreness in his left knee in mid-June but said this week that he's feeling better. Angels manager Ron Washington consequently indicated that the future Hall of Famer is nearing a return to baseball activities, though he didn't specify the nature of those activities or a clear timeframe.     Advice: Correa left Thursday's game with a bruised right wrist, but he didn't end up missing time. The homer was his ninth of the season and got him to the 40-RBI mark this year, though it was all the run production the Twins could muster in Friday's game. The shortstop has 12 multi-hit efforts over his last 21 games, going 36-for-83 (.434) in that span. For the year, he's at a .312/.381/.506 slash line across 64 contests.     Carlos Correa connected on a two-run homer in a loss to the Mariners on Friday.

    Advice: The good run for Correa continues, as he broke up Logan Gilbert’s shutout in the sixth inning with a two-run blast over the field-field fence in the sixth inning.     Scherzer (1-1) took the loss against the Orioles on Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 5.1 innings.

    Advice: Scherzer surrendered a solo home run to Colton Cowser in the fourth inning and an RBI single to Gunnar Henderson in the fifth. He retired the first batter of the sixth frame but was pulled at 77 pitches, as he is still building up his pitch count. The 39-year-old passed Greg Maddux for 11th on the all-time strikeout list and now has 3,375 career punchouts. The 30-year-old has now recorded at least six strikeouts over each of his past three outings and has only walked three batters in 28.1 June innings.
