    • Ty Wigginton went 0-for-2 with a walk in Monday's loss to the Padres.
Advice: He was also caught stealing. Wigginton doesn't draw many starts, and he doesn't do much with them when he does, slashing .194/.286/.226 with no homers or steals and one RBI through 31 at-bats. St. Louis doesn't often make mistakes, but the two-year, $5 million deal they gifted Wigginton in mid-December certainly qualifies.

    • Brandon Belt went 4-for-5 with his sixth home run of the season and four runs scored in Monday's 8-0 blowout of the Nationals.
Advice: Belt has reached base safely in 10 of his last 11 starts. Belt suffered through a forgettable April, batting .235/.287/.353, but his playing time and production have both spiked in May. Belt cut down his strikeouts and increased his rate of walks and his numbers reflect an improved approach at the plate. In May, he's slashing .250/.357/.521 with three homers over 48 at-bats.

    • Brandon Belt is not in Friday's lineup against the Rockies.
Advice: He's taking a seat against the left-hander Jorge De La Rosa. Brett Pill will make the start at first base and bat sixth.

    • Eric Hinske is batting .188 with a .548 OPS over 34 plate-appearances.
Advice: The Diamondbacks handed Hinske a one-year, $1.35 million contract in December after he batted just .197/.272/.311 with two home runs and 13 RBI in 91 games last season for the Braves. The former Rookie of the Year, now 35, is reaching the end of a respectable 12-year career.

    • Adam Dunn hit a three-run homer off Jon Lester in the White Sox's victory Monday.
Advice: The home run was his second off a lefty this year. He hit 15 off southpaws last season after going without a single homer off a left-hander in 2011. Overall, Dunn has 11 homers this year. He's batting .211 with 13 RBI in 16 games this month after coming in at .148 with 12 RBI in 24 games in April.

    • Adam Dunn (back) is back in the White Sox' lineup Sunday.
Advice: Dunn left Saturday's game with back spasms, but he's feeling a lot better a day later. The veteran is batting .421/.450/1.158 with four homers and 10 RBI over his last five games.

    • Adam Dunn left Saturday's game against the Angels due to back spasms.
Advice: Jeff Keppinger hit for the first baseman in the fifth inning. Spasms are generally a day-to-day thing, so we'll have to see how Dunn is feeling Sunday before knowing if he'll have to miss some games. It's unfortunate timing, too, as Dunn has been heating up at the plate.

    • Edwin Encarnacion went 2-for-3 with a three-run double and a run scored in Monday's win over the Rays.
Advice: The bases-loaded double off Josh Lueke put the Blue Jays ahead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Encarnacion has four multi-hit games in his last six and has pulled his batting up from .218 to .255 on the year.

    • Edwin Encarnacion went 2-for-4 with a double in Friday's loss to the Yankees.
Advice: Encarnacion now has three multi-hit games in his last four and has pulled his batting average up from .218 to .247 along the way. Fortunately, he has been a consistent source of power even during his struggles. He's currently tied for the AL lead with 11 home runs.

    • Corey Hart (knee) ran on the field and took full batting practice on Monday.
Advice: It's the first time he's done so since undergoing knee surgery. Hart admitted that the running was "awkward," but he could be ready for a rehab assignment in about a week. The assignment is expected to take a while, so it will likely be well into June before Hart is activated.

    • Chris Davis went 2-for-4 with a homer and a walk Monday against the Yankees.
Advice: Davis lost his share of the AL home run lead when Robinson Cano went deep in the first, only to move back into a tie by hitting his 13th homer an inning later. He has four homers in 10 games after slumping some in late April and early May.

    • Reds recalled 1B Neftali Soto from Triple-A Louisville.
Advice: Soto, 24, has shown good power potential over his seven-year minor league career and will provide corner infield depth. He was batting .269/.310/.388 with three home runs in 33 games at the Triple-A level.

    • Yan Gomes slugged two home runs -- including a 10th-inning walkoff -- in Monday's 10-8 defeat of the Mariners.
Advice: Gomes hit a solo shot in the bottom of the second inning and then played the hero by cranking a three-run blast in the bottom of the 10th with the Indians trailing by two. Gomes finished with four RBI and now has nine RBI in 17 games this season to go along with a cool .951 OPS. He should start seeing a bit more regular playing time.

    • Ike Davis was removed in a double-switch after going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts Monday against the Reds.
Advice: Worse, he made a boneheaded play in the first, getting called for interference and giving two baserunners extra bases. The Mets have been extremely patient with Davis, but one wonders just how much longer that can last.
      (Rotoworld.com)
  • Sat, May 18
    • Ike Davis was told Saturday by Mets general manager Sandy Alderson that a demotion is not imminent.
Advice: ESPN New York reported Saturday morning that there were intensifying internal discussions about sending the struggling first baseman to Triple-A, but Davis got the vote of confidence on Saturday afternoon directly from the man who would make that decision. Davis estimated that he has about a month to turn it around.

    • Mets manager Terry Collins said Thursday that he is committed to batting Ike Davis cleanup "through the weekend."
Advice: Davis went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts Thursday and is now hitless over his last 22 at-bats, dropping his batting average to .157 for the year. The Mets are trying to be patient with the 26-year-old first baseman through his prolonged slump, but he can't keep killing rallies in the middle of the order for much longer.

    • Ryan Howard will have a precautionary MRI on his left knee Monday.
Advice: The full extent of the injury isn't yet known, but it could provide some context to Howard's early struggles. The Phillies will provide an update on his status following the results of the MRI. Howard is not expected to play in Monday's game against the Marlins.

    • Todd Frazier went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts on Monday, dropping his average back down to .224.
Advice: Frazier has six homers and 27 RBI, but he's probably not going to get that average up until he cuts back on the strikeouts. He's fanned 44 times in 43 games this year, compared to 103 times in 128 games last season.

    • Michael Cuddyer (neck) will play two games in extended spring training this week and is expected to be activated from the disabled list Friday.
Advice: Cuddyer will fly to Arizona on Monday night and play in games on Tuesday and Wednesday. Barring any setbacks, he should be ready to go as soon as he's eligible on Friday. The 34-year-old has been sidelined since May 8 with a bulging disc in his neck.

    • Michael Cuddyer (neck) expects to be activated from the disabled list on Friday when first eligible.
Advice: Cuddyer said he is feeling much better after receiving an epidural on Tuesday to relieve the stiffness and soreness in his neck. • Mark Teixeira (wrist) went 1-for-2 with a walk Monday in his first extended spring training game.
Advice: Teixeira reported feeling "good" on his personal Twitter feed afterward. The first baseman is currently aiming to be activated from the disabled list by May 31, but the Yankees are at the top of the American League East standings and could decide to play it safe by letting his minor league rehab assignment linger into early June. Advice: It was his first homer since May 3 and his fifth overall. In 2012, he didn't hit his first bomb until May 11 and his second until June 13, finishing with nine. He'll easily pass that number this year.

    • Matt Carpenter has hit safely in all but two May games.
Advice: The young infielder is third in the NL with 33 runs scored. Carpenter's slash line of .263/.333/.442 in April was solid, but he's really turned up the heat in May, batting .375/.470/.482. If Carpenter can convert some of his doubles (14) into home runs (three), he'll eradicate a fantasy weakness to this point. Despite his hot stick, Carpenter has driven in only 14 runs. He's not a threat to run, either.

Advice: Morrison has been playing in extended spring training games lately and hasn't had any setbacks with his surgically-repaired knee. With his 20-day rehab clock started on Monday, he'll be activated no later than early June as long as he doesn't have a setback.

    • Joey Votto went 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Saturday's 10-0 defeat of the Phillies.
Advice: Votto also drew two walks, reaching base in all six of his plate appearances. He boasts a ridiculous .346/.473/.531 slash line in 43 games this year and is probably the best pure batter in the majors right now. It's just gravy that the power is starting to come around.

    • Joey Votto went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in Friday's loss to the Phillies.
Advice: It was his fifth home run of the season and his first since April 25. Of course, it's tough to complain, as the 29-year-old is hitting .329/.457/.494 through 42 games. He has five multi-hit games in his last seven.

    • David Ortiz was 3-for-4 with two homers and six RBI in Boston's 12-5 rout of the Twins on Saturday.
Advice: Ortiz hit a three-run shot in the top of the first inning, a run-scoring single in the top of the third and a two-run bomb in the top of the seventh. The veteran designated hitter has regressed some from his hot start but is still sporting an outstanding .362/.408/.681 batting line with seven homers and 29 RBI in 24 games.
