  • Gonzalez's 3 hits contribute to Astros' win
Marwin Gonzalez went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored as the Astros held off the Tigers on Sunday.

Advice: Jose Altuve wasn't in the lineup Sunday as he was getting a day of rest. Gonzalez took second base in his stead and performed admirably, contributing to a 10-run outburst on the afternoon. He's hitting .263/.271/.421 on the year with two home runs, 12 RBI, and 13 runs scored.

  • Casey McGehee designated for assignment
Giants designated 3B Casey McGehee for assignment.

Advice: The Giants traded for McGehee over the winter in hopes that he'd pick up some of the offensive slack following the loss to Pablo Sandoval. It would be an understatement to say it didn't work out, as he hit just .200/.254/.282 and is now off the roster. Matt Duffy will be San Francisco's regular third baseman.

  • Jose Iglesias (knee) has X-rays, MRI
Jose Iglesias underwent X-rays and an MRI, which confirmed that he is merely dealing with a left knee contusion.

Advice: Iglesias injured the knee when he collided with the Astros' Chris Carter on Saturday. He's not in Sunday's lineup but isn't expected to miss much time.

  • Aramis Ramirez sitting out on Sunday
Aramis Ramirez is not in the Brewers' lineup Sunday.

Advice: It's a routine day of rest. Elian Herrera will handle third base with Ramirez getting a breather.

  • Jose Iglesias (knee) not in Sunday's lineup
Jose Iglesias (knee) is not in the Tigers' lineup Sunday.

Advice: Iglesias banged knees with the Astros' Chris Carter on Saturday, forcing him from the game. He only has a bruise but is likely still pretty sore. Andrew Romine is at shortstop in his place.

  • Peterson's walkoff RBI guides Braves over MIL
Jace Peterson hit a walkoff RBI single Saturday in the Braves' 3-2 extra-innings win over the Brewers.

Advice: Peterson smacked a leadoff single in the bottom of the first inning but was caught trying to steal second base. His next hit of the game -- five at-bats later -- was a single to left-center field that scored Alberto Callaspo from third base in the bottom of the 11th inning. Peterson, 25, is batting .264/.336/.318 with four steals and 14 runs in 39 games this season.

  • Middlebrooks starting at shortstop Saturday
Will Middlebrooks will make his first career start at shortstop Saturday against the Dodgers.

Advice: Middlebooks played one inning at shortstop against the Diamondbacks on May 10. With Middlebrooks occupying shortstop, Cory Spangenberg will draw the start at third base. Alexi Amarista, who has started at shortstop for 31 of San Diego's 44 games this season, will get the night off.
  • Jose Iglesias leaves early with bruised knee
Jose Iglesias is day-to-day after leaving Saturday's game with a left knee contusion.

Advice: He banged knees with Chris Carter on an infield single back in the third inning. Hernan Perez came in to pinch-run for Iglesias after he singled again in the fifth. Perez and Andrew Romine are candidates to fill in at shortstop if Iglesias misses time.

  • Bloomquist delivers two-run double in victory
Willie Bloomquist delivered a two-run double on Saturday, leading the Mariners to a 3-2 victory over the Blue Jays.

Advice: Score one for the batter vs. pitcher DFS crowd, as Bloomquist entered the day 20-for-44 (.455) with seven extra-base hits lifetime against Mark Buehrle. His two-run double in the third inning increased the M's advantage to 3-1 and proved to be the difference in the ballgame. It was his lone hit in four at-bats on the afternoon, and he's now hitting .184/.205/.211 with three RBI on the season.

  • Matt Duffy hits second homer
Matt Duffy hit his second homer as part of a 3-for-5 night against the Rockies on Friday.

Advice: Duffy has established himself as the Giants' best option at third base, for better or worse. He's not going to be much of an asset offensively, but he's certainly outplayed Casey McGehee to date.

  • Campbell 0-for-2 in loss to Pirates
Eric Campbell went 0-for-2 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch in Friday's loss to the Pirates.

Advice: Campbell hit safely in each of his first three games after returning from the minors, but he's 0-for-14 over his past four games. David Wright (hamstring) is likely at least a week away from returning, but Mets manager Terry Collins should at least consider keeping Campbell near the bottom of the order until he does.

  • Blue Jays add Munenorl Kawasaki from Triple-A
Blue Jays purchased the contract of INF Munenori Kawasaki from Triple-A Buffalo.

Advice: The 33-year-old infielder will provide infield depth while Devon Travis is on the shelf with a shoulder injury. Through 22 games at Triple-A Buffalo, Kawasaki was hitting .232/.354/.290 with two RBI and four stolen bases.

  • Mike Aviles goes 4-for-5, homers
Mike Aviles went 4-for-5 and homered against the White Sox in Thursday's win.

Advice: Aviles is batting a cool .323 with three homers in 65 at-bats while primarily being used against lefties. It'd be nice if he were better at shortstop and more of an option over Jose Ramirez there, but as a platoon partner for Lonnie Chisenhall at third base, he's getting the job done.

  • David Freese homers, knocks in three
David Freese had a two-run homer and an RBI double against the Blue Jays on Thursday.

Advice: Freese had been 0-for-6 against R.A. Dickey and his knuckleball in his career, but he got a hold of a couple tonight. He's hit three homers in six games, and he's up to eight for the season. Less impressive are his .233 average and 37/9 K/BB ratio in 150 at-bats.

  • Ramirez helps Brewers go back-to-back-to-back
Aramis Ramirez hit the third of back-to-back-to-back home runs as the Brewers beat the Tigers in Tuesday's match-up.

Advice: Ryan Braun hit a three-run jack off of Anibal Sanchez and was immediately followed with a solo blast from Adam Lind. Ramirez made it three in a row when he took Sanchez out to deep left field. It's homer number five on the year for the veteran, who has now homered in consecutive games. The power is starting to show itself, but Ramirez is hitting an otherwise mediocre .245/.279/.453 with 14 RBI.

  • Chris Johnson (hand) could be activated Mon.
Chris Johnson (hand) could be activated next Monday.

Advice: Johnson was recently cleared for baseball activities after being shut down for three weeks with a fracture and bone bruises in his left hand. Alberto Callaspo and Pedro Ciriaco have been filling in at the hot corner. Johnson was batting .279/.347/.372 with zero homers and five RBI in 16 games before the injury.

  • Freese serving as DH Wednesday
David Freese will serve as the designated hitter Tuesday against the Blue Jays.

Advice: Freese gets a bit of a rest this way while Taylor Featherson will start at third base. Matt Joyce is starting in left field while Chris Iannetta behind the plate after a big game on Monday. Kole Calhoun remains in the cleanup spot.

  • Ramirez homers as Brewers top Tigers
Aramis Ramirez clubbed a solo home run, finishing 1-for-4 in a winning effort against the Tigers on Monday.

Advice: Ramirez tied the game at 2-2 with his solo shot off of Kyle Lobstein in the fourth inning. The 36-year-old was hampered by a back injury after he appeared to be heating up to start the month of May. He's batting .245/.280/.431 with four home runs and 13 RBI on the year.
    Monday, 7:27 pm
  • Adonis Garcia called up by Braves
Braves purchased the contract of INF/OF Adonis Garcia from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Advice: Garcia, 30, earned the promotion by batting .351/.380/.455 over 34 games for Gwinnett. The Cuban defector gives the Braves versatility and will be making his major league debut when he gets into a game.

  • Peterson gets on base 3 times with 2 RBI
Jace Peterson went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, and a two-run single in Sunday's win over the Marlins.

Advice: Peterson was once again a factor in the Braves' offense a day after hitting a grand slam. He singled in two runs and later scored as part of the Braves' five-run second inning. He's now batting .284/.350/.349 with one home run and 15 RBI.

  • Casey McGehee absent from Sunday's lineup
Casey McGehee is not in the Giants' lineup Sunday.

  • Aviles (bereavement) expected back Monday
The Indians are expected to activate Mike Aviles (bereavement) from the disabled list on Monday.

Advice: He left the team while his daughter received treatment for leukemia. Aviles has started at four positions this year including left field, center field, shortstop and third base. The 34-year-old brings some versatility to the table but isn't much of a fantasy contributor.

  • Jace Peterson blasts grand slam in victory
Jace Peterson's grand slam powered the Braves to a 5-3 victory over the Marlins on Saturday.

Advice: The second inning blast was his first of the season. Peterson batted out of the leadoff slot in the Braves' lineup Saturday and could continue doing so if he keeps producing. He's a good value play in daily games.

  • Mets recall Eric Campbell from Triple-A
Mets recalled INF/OF Eric Campbell from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Advice: Campbell was with the team a couple of weeks ago, but hit just .200/.323/.320 with a homer in 50 at-bats. The 28-year-old will serve as bench depth for the Mets and won't hold any fantasy value.

  • Ramirez (back) has three hits in return
Aramis Ramirez (back) went 3-for-4 with an RBI double in his return to the lineup Friday against the Mets.

Advice: Ramirez missed the previous six games due to back stiffness. The 36-year-old will likely require routine rest as the season moves along, but his performance at the plate Friday was a good sign about how he's feeling.
    May 15, 6:47 pm
  • Aramis Ramirez (back) returns to lineup
Aramis Ramirez (back) is back in the Brewers' lineup Friday.

Advice: Ramirez hasn't played in over a week due to an ailing back, but he's obviously feeling well enough now to give it a go. The veteran third baseman sports a .230/.272/.402 batting line with three longballs over 25 games for the Brew Crew this season.

  • Middlebrooks smacks a homer in win vs. M's
Will Middlebrooks went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's win against the Mariners.

Advice: Middlebrooks is on a two-game hitting streak, which his owners know is relevant news, as he hadn't reached via hit since April 27 before that. The narrative hasn't changed from the past few years: Middlebrooks swings and missed a whole lot, but he'll run into a ball and tattoo it every now and again. He's not long for the big leagues if he can't make better contact (he's been worth a negative WAR in every campaign since his rookie showing in 2012), but there's enough promise here for the Padres to give him an extended audition. Middlebrooks is slashing .196/.245/.363 through 33 games.
