    • Yankees designated INF Alberto Gonzalez for assignment.
Advice: Gonzalez was DFA'd to make room for Reid Brignac on the active roster. He should pass through waivers and continue to serve as organizational infield depth. Brignac is not expected to arrive in time for Saturday's game.

    • Jordan Pacheco went 2-for-5 with a grand slam and five RBI in Friday's 10-9 win over the Giants.
Advice: Pacheco had an RBI ground out in the bottom of the second inning while his fifth-inning grand slam broke a 5-5 tie. With a .313/.360/.410 batting line over 26 games this season, the 27-year-old continues to be a useful player for Colorado. Todd Helton isn't a good bet to hold up and will require regular rest no matter what, so Pacheco should continue to have value in NL-only leagues.

    • Marco Scutaro went 3-for-5 with an RBI single and a run scored Friday against the Rockies.
Advice: Ho-hum, just another multi-hit night for the hottest hitter in the game. Scutaro now has a 16-game hitting streak and has raised his batting average from .215 to .327 in the process. The 37-year-old is not going to provide much in the way of pop or speed, but keep running him out there in all formats until he cools down.

    • Marco Scutaro will serve as the designated hitter for Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays.
Advice: It's a way to give him a bit of a breather. Nick Noonan will start at second base and bat eighth.

    • Angels claimed INF Chris Nelson off waivers from the Yankees.
Advice: Nelson was DFA'd by the Yankees earlier this week and batted just .222 (8-for-36) with two doubles and two RBI in 10 games with the club. He should provide depth at third base behind Alberto Callaspo with the Angels. Scott Cousins has been dropped from the 40-man roster in a corresponding move.

    • Yankees designated INF Chris Nelson for assignment.
Advice: He was cleared to make room for David Adams on the active roster. Nelson was acquired from the Rockies two weeks ago and batted .222 (8-for-36) with two doubles and two RBI in 10 games with the club. He should draw some interest on waivers.

    • Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Friday that Jerry Hairston Jr. (knee, groin) had "a little bit of a setback."
Advice: Hairston was placed on the disabled list earlier this month with a left groin strain, but he's now dealing with a knee issue. The setback means that he won't be activated from the DL next week when first eligible. The Dodgers are expected to send Hairston on a rehab assignment before he's cleared to return.

    • Jerry Hairston, Jr. (groin) is scheduled to have his knee examined Friday.
Advice: Hairston was placed on the disabled list earlier this month due to left groin strain, but now his knee is giving him issues. It's suddenly unlikely that he'll be back when he's eligible.

    • Jerry Hairston Jr. (groin) could begin a rehab assignment this weekend.
Advice: Hairston has been working out at the Dodgers' spring training facility and is feeling improvement with his strained groin. If all goes well, he could be ready for activation sometime next week.

    • Pinch-hitter Chad Tracy homered off Huston Street in the top of the 10th inning to lead the Nationals to a 6-5 win over the Padres on Friday.
Advice: Incredibly, it was the first RBI for a Nationals pinch-hitter in 42 games this season. It was also the sixth homer surrendered by Street in 17 1/3 innings, tripling his total from his 39 innings pitched last year.

    • Miguel Cabrera went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored, leading the Tigers to a 2-1 victory over the Rangers in Arlington on Friday.
Advice: It marked the sixth time already this season that Cabrera has had at least three hits in a game. It's hard to believe, but he's off to an even better start than he was at this point of the season during his Triple Crown winning campaign in 2012. He'll head into play on Saturday hitting a cool .376/.447/.606 with eight homers and 42 RBI.

    • Miguel Cabrera went 2-for-3 with his eighth home run of the season as the Tigers beat the Astros on Tuesday.
Advice: The home run was just a solo shot, so Cabrera only has 41 RBI to show for himself through May 14. He also doubled in the game, and he's hitting .375 on the year. There's nothing to say about the slugger that hasn't already been said. He's simply the best in the game right now.

    • Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Kevin Youkilis (back) will take batting practice "pretty soon."
Advice: Youkilis has hit off a tee and taken soft-toss and is nearing the next step. The Yankees haven't set a timetable for his return, but it's looking like he'll probably be back sometime in late May or early June.

    • Kevin Youkilis (back) hit off a tee and took soft-toss on Wednesday.
Advice: Youkilis had been hoping to return from a bulging disc in his back when eligible, but that time has come and passed. The next step in his rehab isn't yet known, but it's looking like he'll probably be back sometime in late May or early June.

    • David Freese launched a grand slam in Friday's 7-6 win over the Brewers.
Advice: Well, that's one way to bust out of a slump. Freese entered play Friday homerless over his first 27 games this season. With the grand slam, he notched his first RBI since May 2. The Cardinals and fantasy owners are hoping that this night will serve as a turning point for his season.

    • David Freese is not in the Cardinals' starting lineup on Wednesday night against the Mets.
Advice: Freese went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts on Tuesday and is now batting just .216/.296/.250 with zero homers in 26 games this season. Matt Carpenter will start at third base and Daniel Descalso will play second.

    • Aramis Ramirez connected for a pair of three-run homers in Friday's loss to the Cardinals.
Advice: Ramirez did his best to keep the Brewers in the ballgame, but it ultimately wasn't enough to keep up with the Cardinals' offensive attack. The 34-year-old has already served a lengthy stint on the DL this season due to a knee injury, but if healthy he should be one of the most valuable fantasy third baseman once again.

    • CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Padres don't intend to trade Chase Headley.
Advice: Headley has remained firm in his stance that he doesn't want to discuss a contract extension during the season, but that hasn't caused the Padres to panic. The 28-year-old third baseman won't become a free agent until after the 2014 season, so there is still plenty of time for the two sides to work out an agreement. And if they can't, the Padres can always explore the possibility down the road.

    • Martin Prado is batting .275 in May.
Advice: Slowly but surely, Prado is digging himself out of an awful early-season slump. In his first month with the Snakes, Prado slashed an anemic .217/.266/.348. Over 15 games this month, he's batting a reasonable .275/.339/.333. It's certainly not the start Arizona expected after acquiring Prado in the Justin Upton trade and subsequently signed him to a four-year, $40 million contract extension. Sporting his trademark multi-position eligibility and playing in cozy Chase Field, now might be the time to buy low. Prado entered the year a .319/.370/.447 career hitter in Arizona.

    • Pedro Alvarez went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Friday's 5-4 win over the Astros.
Advice: His 462-foot blast tied the game in the eighth inning and the Pirates went on to win in bottom of the ninth after Jake Elmore and Jimmy Paredes collided while going after a pop-up. Alvarez is still hitting just .197 on the year, but he has seven home runs and 20 RBI through 38 games.

    • David Wright went 3-for-4 with a homer and a steal against the Cubs on Friday.
Advice: Wright turned his right ankle coming around third base late in the game, but he was able to walk it off. An elite fantasy bat so far, he's hitting .312 with six homers and nine steals.

    • Wilson Betemit (knee) began jogging in a pool on Friday.
Advice: It's been very slow progress for Betemit in his recovery from surgery to repair a PCL tear in his right knee. He still has yet to be cleared to resume baseball activities, and the timetable for his return continues to be pushed back. He's virtually irrelevant for fantasy purposes at this point.
