    • Red Sox optioned C Ryan Lavarnway to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Advice: Lavarnway saw just seven at-bats with the big club while David Ross was on the DL. He'll need another injury to occur before getting another call-up.

    • Chris Stewart (groin) estimated Monday that it will be likely be a few more days before he's ready to return to the lineup.
Advice: Stewart injured his left groin on an awkward slide into third base last Thursday and hasn't played since. An MRI came back negative, so he's optimistic that he'll avoid a trip to the disabled list. Austin Romine will continue to handle the load behind the plate for now.

    • Martin Maldonado has regressed at the plate in 2013, slashing .184/.253/.303 over 83 plate appearances.
Advice: In his first real exposure to Major League pitching, Maldonado batted .266/.321/.408 in 256 plate appearances last season. Perhaps he's toting his struggles onto the field with his catcher's gear. Maldonado has been a run worse than average defensively this year, according to Baseball Reference.

    • Carlos Santana went 1-for-2 with four walks in Thursday's blowout win against the Boston.
Advice: He also scored three runs. Santana owners enjoyed a spectacular April out of their star catcher and then suffered through a rough May prior to Wednesday (182/.316/.333). In Cleveland's last two games, Santana is 3-for-6 with a homer, five walks, two RBI and four runs. He's third in the AL in walks (29) and fourth in OPS (.975).

    • Carlos Santana went 2-for-4 with a home run in the loss to the Tigers on Wednesday.
Advice: After a red hot April, Santana was hitting just .182/.316/.333 heading into Wednesday's game. Backup catcher Yan Gomes has been playing more frequently lately, but Santana's bat plays at first base and he even gets an occasional game at DH, too. No matter how they arrange it, Santana will be in the middle of the Indians lineup more often than not.

    • Mariners optioned C Jesus Montero to Triple-A Tacoma.
Advice: Montero has been a major disappointment this season, batting just .208/.264/.327 with three home runs and nine RBI in 29 games. The Tacoma News Tribune reports Montero "may no longer be viewed as a catcher at the big league level" and is expected play first base and DH in the minors. Mike Zunino will remain at Triple-A for now, while Jesus Sucre will replace Montero on the active roster.

    • J.P. Arencibia went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI in Thursday's 12-6 win over the Orioles.
Advice: Arencibia delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth, a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth and an RBI ground out in the eighth. While the 27-year-old backstop is only hitting .230 with a .244 on-base percentage, he has 11 home runs to go along with 24 RBI. He's on pace to set career-highs in both categories.

    • Yadier Molina had four of the Cardinals' 14 hits in Wednesday's win over the Padres.
Advice: Molina's sitting on just two homers after hitting 22 last year, but he's batting .333. Unfortunately, it's not leading too many RBI; most of his 21 came in April and he hasn't had a two-RBI game in four weeks.

    • Brayan Pena went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored in the Tigers' 11-7 victory over the Indians on Wednesday.
Advice: Pena doesn't play much -- Wednesday was just his 14th game of the year -- but when he does, he usually hits. His three-hit game raised his average to .304, and with starting catcher Alex Avila struggling it may mean more at-bats for Pena in the near future.

    • Mariners purchased the contract of C Jesus Sucre from Triple-A Tacoma.
Advice: Sucre, 25, has a .302/.371/.321 batting line in 14 games as a part-time Triple-A catcher. Mike Zunino still needs development time, so the Mariners are promoting Sucre to replace the struggling Jesus Montero.

    • Making his first appearance in 15 days, Ramon Hernandez went 2-for-3 with a homer and two walks on Wednesday.
Advice: Manager Don Mattingly made it obvious he prefers Tim Federowicz to Hernandez as A.J. Ellis' backup, but with Federowicz back in Triple-A, he had no choice but to give Hernandez just his second start in May and sixth of the season. Hernandez came through in a big way, but we'll see if that makes any difference to Mattingly.
