    • On bench Friday
Horwitz is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Guardians.

Advice: Horwitz will yield to Isiah Kiner-Falefa at the keystone Friday with southpaw Logan Allen on the mound for Cleveland. Horwitz had started at second base in five consecutive games since being called up June 7 but each of those contests featured a right-handed opposing pitcher. Rotowire.com 32 minutes ago
    • Dealing with oblique injury
Wicks had to be lifted from Friday's start versus the Cardinals because of a right oblique discomfort, Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: Wicks recorded just five outs before having to be removed. Cubs manager Craig Counsell said during an in-game interview of Wicks' oblique injury that the pitcher "felt it pretty good," but the team won't know more until after he's examined following the game. Kyle Hendricks replaced Wicks on Friday and makes for an obvious candidate to take his rotation spot if Wicks needs to miss time, which seems likely. Rotowire.com 35 minutes ago

    • Taking seat against lefty
O'Hearn is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Phillies, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Advice: O'Hearn will avoid a matchup against southpaw Ranger Suarez on Friday, as Adley Rutschman fills in at DH and James McCann catches. O'Hearn is just 1-for-11 against lefties in 2024 and all nine of his home runs have come against right-handed pitching. Rotowire.com 41 minutes ago

    • Slated for promotion
The Astros will call up Hummel from Triple-A Round Rock prior to Friday's contest versus the Tigers, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Advice: He will take the roster spot vacated by Jose Abreu, who has been released. Hummel, 29, certainly offers more versatility than Abreu with an ability to play both corner outfield spots, first base and catcher. The switch hitter has slashed .301/.423/.509 with seven homers and eight steals at Round Rock in 2024. Rotowire.com 42 minutes ago
    • Takes seat Friday
Cowser is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Phillies.

Advice: Left-hander Ranger Suarez is drawing the start for the Phillies, so the lefty-hitting Cowser will begin this one on the bench. The Orioles are going with Austin Hays in left field and Cedric Mullins in center Friday. Rotowire.com 45 minutes ago
    • Astros select C/OF Cooper Hummel’s contract
Astros selected the contract of C/OF Cooper Hummel, according to KPRC2 Houston.

Advice: Hummel is the corresponding move after the Astros released Jose Abreu. The 29-year-old hit .301 with seven home runs in 163 at-bats for Triple-A Sugar Land this year. He spent parts of the last two major league seasons with Seattle and Arizona, but is yet to meaningfully produce in the majors. Rotoworld 54 minutes ago
    • Exits outing with injury
Wicks was removed from Friday's start against the Cardinals in the second inning with an injury, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: Wicks evidently tweaked something while surrendering a Dylan Carlson single with two outs in the second frame. The left-hander recently returned from the injured list with a flexor strain, although it's not clear at this point whether that's what he might be dealing with again. • Braves sign RHP Matt Carasiti to minors deal
Braves signed RHP Matt Carasiti to minor league contract.

Advice: Carasiti had a 10.38 ERA in seven appearances out of the bullpen with the Rockies this year. He’ll head to Triple-A and serve as organizational depth for the Braves. Rotoworld Today, 11:35 am

    • Astros release 1B Jose Abreu
      Astros released 1B Jose Abreu.

Advice: The 37-year-old from Cuba has accomplished a lot in his career. Abreu is a three-time All-Star, three-time Silver Slugger award winner, won the Rookie of the Year award in 2014 and Most Valuable Player award in 2020. It’s undeniable that his production has fallen off a cliff over the last two seasons, though. Abreu hit .237/.296/.383 in 141 games last year and his average fell to .124 in 113 at-bats this year. He’s in the second year of a three-year $58.3 million deal, but the Astros recognized the sunk cost and will be on the hook for the remainder of the money still owed to Abreu.
