    • Nick Masset (shoulder) is throwing from a distance of 120 feet.
Advice: Masset had shoulder surgery last September and was shut down in April after experiencing a setback with his throwing program. While he's making progress, he has yet to throw from a mound. There's no clear timetable for his return.

    • Adam Jones will serve as the DH for the second straight game Wednesday.
Advice: Jones tweaked his right leg during Monday's game and is banged up in general, so Orioles manager Buck Showalter is playing things safe. Chris Dickerson will make another start in center field after his two-homer night on Tuesday.

    • Adam Jones is dealing with some right leg soreness.
Advice: Jones tweaked his leg during Monday's game. The Orioles are playing him in the designated hitter spot on Tuesday in order to protect him. As long as the ailment doesn't get worse, he should continue to play through it.

    • Adam Jones tallied three RBI but the Orioles lost to the Rays on Saturday at Camden Yards.
Advice: Jones hit a two-run homer in Baltimore's four-run first inning and drove in his third run in the fourth inning on a fielder's choice ground ball. The 27-year-old is on track for another sensational season.

    • Andrew Miller is proving his 2012 breakout was no fluke, posting a 3.86 ERA and 24/8 K/BB rate over 20 appearances.
Advice: The sixth overall pick in 2006 has successfully saved his career in Boston's bullpen. Miller went 21-29 with a 5.79 ERA between 2006-2011, mostly as a starter for the Tigers, Marlins and Red Sox. He hasn't started a game in the last two seasons and has rewarded Boston with a 3.48 ERA over 73 appearances. Miller's current strikeout rate is by far the best of his career.

    • Rick Ankiel tripled and doubled twice against the Reds on Wednesday.
Advice: The triple should have been a double, too, but Xavier Paul fell down in left field twice on the play. Ankiel is now 10-for-31 with seven extra-base hits as a member of the Mets. It probably won't last, but it's nice to see him doing well. His career was in danger of being over when the Astros let him go.

    • Rick Ankiel went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer Saturday against the Cubs.
Advice: Ankiel is 6-for-20 (.300) with two homers, four RBI and six strikeouts since joining the Mets earlier this week. The 33-year-old is not going to hit for a high batting average, but he has enough pop to be useful in NL-only leagues as long as he gets regular at-bats in center field.

    • Glen Perkins blew his first save of the season in Tuesday's 5-4, extra-innings loss to the Braves.
Advice: Minnesota is having about as much success in Atlanta as they did during the 1991 World Series. Perkins was summoned in the ninth inning and recorded two quick outs before Evan Gattis blasted a 412-foot bomb over the left-field fence. The 30-year-old lefty remains a lighthouse in the dark night that is Minnesota's pitching corps. Perkins saved 16 games last year while registering a 2.56 ERA and now has eight saves, a 3.45 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 25/5 K/BB rate over 16 appearances in 2013.

    • Jimmy Paredes went 3-for-3 with his first home run of the season but the Astros lost to the Royals on Tuesday.
Advice: Paredes' homer, a three-run shot, gave the Astros a lead in the fourth inning. He also added two singles on the night to bring his line to .268/.311/.439 through 14 games since being recalled. With the release of Rick Ankiel, it seems Paredes will continue to see plenty of playing time in the Houston outfield.

    • Paul Maholm allowed just an unearned run over 7 1/3 innings in defeating the Twins on Wednesday.
Advice: Unfortunately, Maholm's two bad starts this year were really bad, because he's given up just nine earned runs in the other eight. This is the fourth time he's gone without allowing a single earned run. Overall, he's 6-4 with a 3.38 ERA.

  • Fri, May 17
    • Paul Maholm allowed four runs (two earned) in six innings Friday in a win over the Dodgers.
Advice: Maholm was in line for the loss before Justin Upton launched a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning. The southpaw gave up eight hits (including a home run) and a walk while notching three strikeouts. While Maholm hasn't been able to match his early dominance, he still makes for a useful mixed in mixed fantasy leagues.

    • Andre Ethier is out of Wednesday's lineup, in part because Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said he wanted to put out his "most competitive lineup" and one that would "fight the hardest."
Advice: Ouch. Ethier is only hitting .264 with four homers and a .758 OPS this season, but it's still unusual to see him sitting against a right-hander Wily Peralta. And in favor of Scott Van Slyke, no less. Either way, Mattingly sounds like someone who is feeling the pressure of his team's struggles. This could be the beginning of the end for him in Los Angeles.

    • Andre Ethier will receive a day off on Friday.
Advice: It's just a day of rest for the outfielder. Ethier has been hot of late, batting .500/.526/.625 over his last five contests.

    • Troy Tulowitzki is not in Wednesday's lineup against the Diamondbacks.
Advice: The Rockies also have a scheduled day off on Thursday, so it's not a bad way to give him a rest. Jonathan Herrera will make the start at shortstop.

  • Sun, May 19
    • Troy Tulowitzki does roughly two hours of pregame and postgame maintenance on his left leg every day.
Advice: The maintenance includes massages and strengthening exercises before the game and sitting in the ice tub and a routine with exercise bands after the game. Tulo admits that his nagging left groin ailment leaves him "not capable" of playing every day. The injury bothers the shortstop most when he's running, particularly when he lunges to first base and sometimes when he breaks out of the batter's box. The Rockies are doing their best to manage the condition, and assistant general manager Bill Geivett admits that the club is "being overly cautious." Tulo has started 34 of the team's first 42 games and will probably continue to play at a similar pace. He's been awfully productive, hitting .341/.413/.605 with eight homers and 35 RBI, but obviously the groin issue remains a long-term concern.

    • Wade Davis allowed three runs over five innings but escaped with a no-decision as the Royals beat the Astros on Tuesday.
Advice: Davis was fortunate to hold the Astros to just three runs, as he gave up eight hits and four walks on the night. After a strong start to the season, Davis now owns a 5.91 ERA and has won just one start since April 17. Fortunately for Davis, the Royals don't have any better options to replace him in the rotation at this point. His next start will come Sunday against the Angels.

    • Aaron Hicks went 3-for-4 and hit his fourth homer Wednesday against the Braves.
Advice: Hicks had fallen back into a 2-for-25 slump since his two-homer game on May 13. Today's homer off Cory Rasmus was his first off a righty. He was hitting just .119 in 101 at-bats against them.

    • Nolan Reimold (hamstring) is not expected to be ready for activation from the disabled list when first eligible.
Advice: Reimold was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 12 with a right hamstring strain. He is eligible to return on May 28 -- next Tuesday -- but his rehab is not that far along. The outfielder should be good to go at some point during the first few weeks of June.

  • Sat, May 18
    • Orioles placed OF Nolan Reimold on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 12, with a right hamstring strain.
Advice: It's the reason why Reimold was held out of the Orioles' lineup for the fifth straight day Saturday. Chris Dickerson will likely get the majority of starts at designated hitter in his absence. Given his injury history, Reimold could be looking at an extended stay on the DL.

    • Justin Upton is not in the Braves' lineup Wednesday against the Twins.

    • Justin Upton smacked a go-ahead grand slam and knocked in five runs in Friday's 8-5 win over the Dodgers.
Advice: For all his early success, this was the first time he had driven in more than two runs in a game this season. Upton collected his first RBI with a ground out in the bottom of the third inning and put the Braves ahead with his grand slam off Paco Rodriguez in the bottom of the sixth. It was the third grand slam of his career and his first since June 2, 2009. The 25-year-old outfielder currently leads the majors with 14 home runs and is just three shy of his total from all of last year.

    • Troy Patton holds a 4.05 ERA over 18 appearances.
Advice: The left-hander put up a 2.43 ERA over 54 appearances last season in his first full year in the majors. His encore isn't going as smoothly due to an increased rate of walks (more than double what it was last season) and decreased strikeouts (he's punching out 3.4 less batters per nine innings). Being increasingly hittable doesn't help either. After a 1.02 WHIP in 2012, Patton sits at 1.55 today.
