    • Sean Marshall (shoulder) is long-tossing at 120 feet.
Advice: "He threw very well today," Reds trainer Paul Lessard told reporters on Wednesday evening. Marshall is expected to return from the disabled list around early July.

  • Sun, Jun 16
    • Sean Marshall (shoulder) hopes to begin long-tossing in the next day or so.
Advice: Marshall's shoulder is feeling good so far, but the left-hander thinks he's probably still at least three weeks away from a return. He's been out since mid-May with a shoulder issue that initially cropped up in spring training.

    • Jonathan Broxton (elbow) is expected to resume throwing at some point this weekend.
Advice: Broxton has been idle since being placed on the disabled list June 14 with a right elbow flexor strain. "He's been working on strengthening it," trainer Paul Lessard said Wednesday. "He finally has his full range of motion back. We wanted to get it flushed out." There is no timetable for the right-hander's return.

  • Sat, Jun 15
    • Reds placed RHP Jonathan Broxton on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 14, with a right elbow flexor strain.
Advice: Broxton has a 4.33 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 20/11 K/BB ratio through his first 27 innings this season, so it provides some context for his struggles. The Reds expect Broxton to return on June 29 when first eligible.

  • Fri, Jun 14
    • Jonathan Broxton is dealing with swelling in his right elbow, and is listed as day-to-day.
Advice: The big right-hander has struggled to get into a groove this season, posting a 4.33 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 20/11 K/BB ratio through his first 27 innings. While it doesn't sound like a serious injury, Broxton owners should monitor the situation closely.

    • Santiago Casilla (knee) will throw a bullpen session Thursday.
Advice: It will be his first since he had a cyst removed from his right knee last month. While Casilla was originally expected to be out until the second half of the season, it appears he could rejoin the Giants' bullpen prior to the All-Star break.

    • Santiago Casilla (knee) is expected to throw off a mound within the next week.

    • Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Friday that Santiago Casilla (knee) could be activated from the disabled list in 2-3 weeks.
Advice: Good news, as Casilla was originally expected to be out until a little past the All-Star break. The veteran reliever threw off flat ground Friday for the first time since surgery and will continue to build his workload for now.

    • Chris Perez (shoulder) will not be activated from the disabled list this Friday.
Advice: The original plan was to bring him back for the weekend but Perez yielded three homers (and five runs in total) during a rehab appearance Tuesday night at Double-A Akron. The Indians want to get him a little more work against minor league competition. Vinnie Pestano will remain the Indians' primary ninth-inning man.

    • Chris Perez (shoulder) allowed three homers and five runs in an inning of work in his second rehab appearance with Double-A Akron.
Advice: Perez gave up five hits overall and also hit a batter. The right-hander was supposed to be activated from the disabled list on Friday, but the Indians might re-think that after tonight's showing. Vinnie Pestano owners should hang on to him.

    • Chris Perez (shoulder) is expected to be activated from the disabled list Friday.
Advice: Perez, out since May 26 with shoulder soreness, allowed two hits and struck out one Sunday in his first rehab appearance with Low-A Lake County. He'll have to make it through another appearance Tuesday, but it sounds like he's on track to return later this week. Vinnie Pestano will continue to serve as the fill-in closer for now, though he has only notched one save during Perez's absence.

    • Chris Perez (shoulder) will throw one inning Sunday in a rehab game with Low-A Lake Country.
Advice: Perez tossed multiple bullpen sessions this week and had no issues with his shoulder. He's on track to return to the Indians' bullpen within the next 3-4 days and should slide back into the ninth-inning role almost immediately. Perez is 6-for-8 in save opportunities this season.

    • Tom Wilhelmsen gave up a game-tying homer to the first batter he faced after being brought into a one-run game in the eighth Tuesday against the Angels.
Advice: So, Wilhelmsen can't close at the moment, but he can be brought in to face Albert Pujols with the game on the line? Pujols took him deep on just his second pitch of the night. It was actually the first homer allowed by Wilhelmsen this season. After that, he came back and got five outs, though he did need Charlie Furbush to bail him out of a jam in a tie game in the ninth. Overall, it probably wasn't a showing that's going to help his chances of returning to the closer's role.
      (Rotoworld.com)
  • Fri, Jun 14
    • Mariners manager Eric Wedge said Friday that Tom Wilhelmsen will not be used as the team's closer for at least his next two or three outings.
Advice: The Mariners want to see Wilhelmsen work on improving his command and location in some non-save situations before being thrust back into the ninth inning. They'll utilize the dreaded closer-by-committee for the time being, with Carter Capps the most likely beneficiary.

    • Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Wednesday that Jake Arrieta will join the starting rotation with Triple-A Norfolk.
Advice: Arrieta was optioned to the minors after he gave up five runs on 10 hits and a walk over 4 2/3 innings Monday in a spot-start against the Tigers. The 27-year-old right-hander has a 7.23 ERA in five starts in the majors this season and a 5.50 ERA in six starts and one relief appearance in Triple-A, but the Orioles aren't considering changing his role yet.

    • Orioles optioned RHP Jake Arrieta to Triple-A Norfolk.

    • Jake Arrieta will start Monday against the Tigers.

    • Orioles recalled RHP Jake Arrieta from Triple-A Norfolk.
Advice: Arrieta has struck out a batter per inning in his time with the O's this season but holds a 6.63 ERA and 1.63 WHIP and has walked 16 over 19 innings. He'll give them some length in the bullpen.

    • Mopping up against the Orioles, Jose Valverde gave up four runs and five hits in the ninth Wednesday.
Advice: The Tigers were already down 9-3, so Valverde's showing didn't hurt the team. It did, however, demonstrate once again why he's a really hard guy to trust. When Chris Davis took him deep today, it upped his total to six homers allowed in 19 1/3 innings.

  • Fri, Jun 14
    • Tigers manager Jim Leyland indicated Friday that he's not ready to remove Jose Valverde from the closer role.
Advice: "We're going to use Jose Valverde until we decide Jose Valverde can or can't do it or we've got somebody else better," said Leyland. It's not exactly a vote of confidence, but it sounds like they will stick with him for now. The 35-year-old has a 4.15 ERA, three blown saves and five homers allowed in just 18 appearances this season. We don't expect him to last the entire season in the closer role.

    • Dylan Axelrod allowed five runs -- four earned -- over six innings in a no-decision against the Twins on Tuesday.
Advice: Axelrod was actually somewhat fortunate to allow just the four earned runs, as he surrendered 10 hits and two walks on the night. The right-hander has hit a bit of a rough stretch, as he hasn't gotten a win since May 26. He'll try to correct that Sunday in Kansas City.

    • Yoervis Medina pitched a perfect bottom of the 10th in a 3-2 game to earn the save as the Mariners edged the Angels on Tuesday.
Advice: Medina might have been in line for the save in the ninth anyway, given that Oliver Perez was used to pitch a scoreless seventh with the Mariners up 2-1. Tom Wilhelmsen let that lead get away in the eighth, but the Mariners reclaimed it in the 10th after Erick Aybar couldn't quite get a handle on Kendrys Morales' sharp liner over his head. Medina went on to retire Albert Pujols, Mark Trumbo and Howie Kendrick in order for the save. He's now a candidate for more saves, though he has the same sort of control troubles as Wilhelmsen. Even after tonight, he's walked 11 in his last 13 1/3 innings of work.

    • Huston Street earned his 14th save of the year Monday as the Padres beat the Giants 5-3.
Advice: Street entered with a 5-3 lead in the 13th inning and stranded Gregor Blanco, who reached on a single. Street isn't striking anyone out -- he has 13 over 24 games -- and has tossed only four perfect innings in 2013. Despite Street's struggles, he's 14-for-15 in save conversions and has a good amount of job security.

    • Huston Street allowed a run on two hits Saturday, but escaped with his 12th save of the year against the Diamondbacks.
Advice: With one out, Cliff Pennington reached on infield single. Two batters later, he was doubled in by Gerardo Parra. Street next induced a game-ending fly out from Didi Gregorius. It was Street's first appearance since the Padres activated him from the disabled list (strained left calf). The veteran closer has been highly susceptible to damage this year, going 0-3 with a 4.64 ERA. Because of his name, Street presumably has plenty of job security.

    • Padres activated RHP Huston Street from the 15-day disabled list.
Advice: The Padres were pleased with how Street threw the ball during a minor league rehab assignment, and he appears to be completely recovered from his strained left calf. The Padres' closer has converted 11 of his first 12 save chances while posting a 4.43 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 13/8 K/BB ratio in 20 1/3 innings.

    • Joakim Soria (elbow, pectoral) hopes to begin a minor league rehab assignment as soon as Thursday.
Advice: Soria has made it through multiple batting practice sessions without incident and appears ready to progress to game action. Pitchers are permitted to have a 30-day rehab window and Soria figures to need most of it as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery. He could provide a nice boost for the Rangers' bullpen during the second half.

Advice: He will throw another session on Monday, and will then be reassessed by the team. If all goes well then, he could be cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment. The Rangers are hoping that he'll be able to rejoin their bullpen at some point in the next month. • Kevin Gregg nailed down his 10th save of the season in Tuesday's win over the Cardinals.
Advice: Gregg came on in relief of Jeff Samardzija with one out and two on in the ninth and allowed an RBI single to Yadier Molina. He then induced what turned out to be the game-ending double play when pinch-runner Shane Robinson was called out for interference. He's capable of blowing up at any time, but Gregg has plenty of job security with a 0.81 ERA and 0.99 WHIP while going 10-for-10 in save chances.

Advice: Betancourt will face live hitters on Friday and could then be cleared for a minor league rehab assignment. • Heath Bell was charged with the loss after allowing a ninth inning solo homer to Giancarlo Stanton in a tie game Monday.
Advice: Entering a 2-2 contest in the top of the ninth, Bell struck out Ed Lucas before Stanton homered to right. Bell (4.23 ERA, 1.52 WHIP) has allowed a home run in three consecutive appearances. Consider it a course-correction after he enjoyed some good luck earlier this season. With J.J. Putz (elbow) close to returning, the clock on Bell's reign as closer may be ticking.
