    • Joe Mauer went 3-for-5 with a home run in the Twins' 7-5 victory over the White Sox on Tuesday.
Advice: Mauer hit a two-run homer in the first inning and later doubled off White Sox starter Dylan Axelrod, falling a triple short of the cycle. The two RBI gave him 23 on the season to go with a .327/.412/.492 line. And the homer was his seventh, giving him a fair chance to eclipse his total of 10 in 2012. If he finishes with his current slugging percentage it would actually be his third-highest all-time among full seasons.

    • John Jaso hit his second home run of the season as the A's beat the Rangers on Tuesday.
Advice: Jaso doesn't put a charge in one often, so it's even more surprising when he hits one off the likes of Rangers starter Yu Darvish. In fact, Jaso's game is so predicated on getting on base that he actually owns a higher OBP than slugging percentage, sporting a .281/.379/.371 line for the year.

    • Yadier Molina hit a two-run homer in the Cardinals' 4-1 defeat of the Cubs on Wednesday in St. Louis.
Advice: The two-run shot was Yadi's only hit of the night but it was a big gone, breaking a 1-1 tie and putting the Cardinals ahead for good. Molina, the best defensive catcher in baseball, is now batting .365/.406/.514 with five homers and 41 RBI. He might be the early NL MVP.

    • Yadier Molina is not in the Cardinals' lineup Sunday.
Advice: It's just a day off for the backstop. Tony Cruz is starting in Molina's place against the Marlins.

    • Russell Martin scored a run, notched an RBI and stole a base against the Reds on Tuesday.
Advice: Martin went 1-for-3 but was integral in the Pirates' three-run first inning. The catcher batted in the No. 2 spot in the lineup for the fifth time this season as opposed to his normal fifth spot. He's now scored four runs in those five games.
      (Rotoworld.com)
  • Mon, Jun 17
    • Russell Martin rejoined the starting lineup Monday and went 2-for-3 with an RBI against the Reds.
Advice: Martin didn't start Sunday due to lower body soreness.

  • Sun, Jun 16
    • Russell Martin was scratched from Sunday's lineup due to lower body soreness.
Advice: It's a vague diagnosis, but it doesn't seem like something that will keep him out more than a day or two. Michael McKenry is starting on Sunday in Martin's place.

    • Braves placed C Evan Gattis on the 15-day disabled list with a strained oblique.
Advice: No word on how or when the injury occurred, but oblique strains usually require some extended rest. Gattis has been one of the best stories in baseball this season, coming out of nowhere to hit .252 with 14 home runs and a .894 OPS in 53 games. Tyler Pastornicky will take his place on the active roster while Gerald Laird will function as the primary backup to Brian McCann.

  • Sun, Jun 16
    • Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez expects Evan Gattis to make back-to-back starts during their upcoming five-game series with the Mets.
Advice: Gattis hasn't been in the Braves' lineup since Wednesday, but is expected to start consecutive games at left field and catcher this week. "We got to put him in there," Gonzalez said. "Looking forward, I think we'll get him in there a couple days in a row with the doubleheader Tuesday."

    • Phillies activated C Carlos Ruiz from the 15-day disabled list.
Advice: Ruiz was originally slated to return on Friday, but apparently two rehab games was enough to convince the Phillies that he's ready. Out since May 19 due to a right hamstring strain, the veteran backstop returns to a .235/.286/.275 batting line in 16 games this season.

    • J.P. Arencibia went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run as the Blue Jays beat the Rockies on Tuesday.
Advice: The homer was Arencibia's third in four games and his 15th on the season. His .222/.243/.461 line is indicative of Arencibia's game -- he doesn't hit for average, he doesn't walk, but when he makes contact it goes a long way.

    • Mike Napoli is not in the Red Sox' lineup for the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Rays.

    • Mike Napoli (illness) is feeling much better and is likely to play at least one game in Tuesday's doubleheader against the Rays.

    • Red Sox manager John Farrell said Mike Napoli (illness) could return to the lineup Tuesday.

    • Mike Napoli (illness) will be sent back to Boston to undergo further tests.
Advice: Napoli is still experiencing dizziness and nausea after leaving Thursday's game with an undisclosed illness. A concussion has been ruled out, but the issue is more serious than originally thought. The Red Sox are hoping he can return early next week.

    • Tigers manager Jim Leyland reiterated Tuesday that Victor Martinez will not catch unless there's an emergency.
Advice: Leyland has already said it on multiple occasions, but the topic was raised again after Alex Avila (forearm) was placed on the disabled list Monday. "I won't catch Victor unless it's some freak situation," said Leyland. The Tigers will go with Brayan Pena and Bryan Holaday behind the plate for now.

    • Anthony Recker hit his second home run of the season Tuesday in the Mets' defeat of the Braves.
Advice: The two-run shot in the top of the seventh inning broke a 0-0 tie and put Zack Wheeler in line for his first major league win. Recker doesn't play much behind John Buck and will likely be sent to Triple-A Las Vegas when prospect Travis d'Arnaud is ready to contribute.

    • John Buck hit his first homer since May 24 and just his second since May 3 in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Braves.

    • Mets prospect catcher Travis d'Arnaud (foot) has been cleared to begin running.
Advice: Excellent news for d'Arnaud, who has been sidelined since mid-April with a broken bone in his left foot. The 24-year-old backstop is expected to return to game action within 3-4 weeks and should make his major league debut at some point during the second half.

    • A.J. Pierzynski had a two-run homer and an RBI double against the A's on Monday.
Advice: Pierzynski is batting .357 in 15 games this month, though he had driven in just two runs until racking up three RBI tonight. He's hitting .305 with six homers in 177 at-bats for the season, which is pretty good for someone who spent a couple of weeks on the DL.

    • Tigers placed C Alex Avila on the 15-day disabled list with a deep contusion on his left forearm.
Advice: Avila suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch on Sunday. Bryan Holaday has been called up in a corresponding roster move while Brayan Pena figures to get most of the playing time behind the plate.

  • Sun, Jun 16
    • Alex Avila (forearm) is not expected to be in Monday's lineup.
Advice: Avila will miss at least one game after being hit by a pitch Sunday. The Tigers are calling him day-to-day, but a stint on the DL can't be ruled out. He finished 2-for-3 with a run scored before exiting.

  • Sat, Jun 15
    • Alex Avila is batting .166/.265/.280 this season.
Advice: That's through 181 plate appearances. The jig is clearly up in one-catcher mixed leagues, while Avila's .243/.352/.384 2012 slash offers little hope for players in two-catcher formats. Avila's excellent 2011 - where he hit .295/.389/.506 - is looking more and more like the outlier campaign in his five-year career. It wouldn't be stunning if Avila finally started to hit, but there's not a ton of upside in waiting for him to do so.

Advice: Holaday will replace Alex Avila (forearm) on the active roster. The 25-year-old backstop was batting .259/.317/.386 in 47 games at Triple-A this season and figures to backup Brayan Pena for now.

    • Yasmani Grandal hit a three-run homer, his first of the season, in Saturday's 6-4 victory over the Diamondbacks.
Advice: He also walked in the game. Grandal's bat had been limp since he was activated from a 50-game suspension for testing positive for elevated levels of testosterone. He entered Saturday's game hitting .178/.283/.222 over 45 at-bats. The Cuban hit eight home runs in 192 at-bats last season.

    • Jason Castro launched his 10th home run of the season in the Astros' defeat of the White Sox on Sunday.
Advice: Castro hit his ninth home run on Saturday. The former No. 10 overall pick had a big May and is beginning to heat up again here in June. He needs to be owned in pretty much all standard fantasy leagues at this point.

  • Sat, Jun 15
    • Jason Castro hit his ninth home run of the season Saturday in the Astros' win over the White Sox.
Advice: Castro has been hitting well since the beginning of May and is currently on pace for 21 home runs. The former first-round pick seems to be blossoming here in 2013 and will be worthy of a starting job in standard mixed fantasy leagues so long as the development continues.

    • Twins optioned C Chris Herrmann to Triple-A Rochester.
Advice: Herrmann merely provided an additional bat off of the bench while the Twins were dealing with some injuries. He has made a nice impression in a limited sample, hitting .462 (6-for-13) with a homer and four RBI. He's likely to return to the Twins at some point this summer.
