      Advice: Darvish has recovered from a groin injury and was originally expected to come off the injured list to start Tuesday, but that plan was scrapped when he developed inflammation in his right elbow. Initial indications suggested that the issue is minor, and the clean imaging seems to support that, though San Diego will likely be cautious with the veteran hurler's return.       Eovaldi didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against Milwaukee, allowing five runs on nine hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out four.

      Advice: Eovaldi had a troublesome third inning, allowing Jackson Chourio to reach on a leadoff single before letting Christian Yelich and Willy Adames get on base with two outs, leading to a Jake Bauers grand slam. The other run charged to Eovaldi came in the fourth frame, when Derek Hill couldn't make a diving catch in center field, allowing Chourio to get all the way around the bases for an inside-the-park home run. Eovaldi's five runs allowed tied his season high, and he's allowed a home run in five consecutive starts. Overall, he owns a 3.45 ERA and 74 strikeouts across 73.0 innings.       Advice: Arenado played all 18 innings Wednesday at third base in his return from a left forearm injury. He didn't make much of an impact at the plate, but it's encouraging to see the 33-year-old play both halves of the twin bill. He's down to a .254/.310/.364 slash line with six home runs, 32 RBI, 26 runs scored and one stolen base over 73 contests this year. The Cardinals have occasionally used Brandon Crawford and Brendan Donovan at the hot corner, and they could continue to be an option there if Arenado is out of the lineup or limited to designated hitter at any point in the future, as his forearm issue is believed to be a lingering one.       Manny Machado went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and a run scored as the Padres bested the Nationals on Wednesday afternoon in San Diego.

      Advice: Machado led off the eighth inning with a single off of Tanner Rainey, then rode home on Kyle Higashioka’s grand slam. With his two-hit attack on Wednesday, the 31-year-old superstar third baseman is now hitting .264/.316/.390 on the season to go along with eight homers, 40 RBI and five stolen bases.       Brady Singer allowed one run over 7 1/3 innings on Wednesday in a no-decision against the Marlins.

      Advice: Singer surrendered a run-scoring single to Nick Fortes in the second inning, which represented the lone tally against him in this one. Unfortunately, Kansas City’s offense didn’t respond with any run support until after his exit from the contest when they put up five runs in the eighth inning. The 27-year-old righty finished with five strikeouts and only issued one walk in his longest outing of the year so far.       Nathan Eovaldi surrendered five runs in seven innings Wednesday in a no-decision versus the Brewers.

      Advice: Jake Bauers’ third-inning grand slam accounted for most of the damage. It was actually the first slam ever surrendered by Eovaldi; the league had hit just .227/.228/.267 in 79 career plate appearances with the bases loaded. The sixth spot in the batting order represents the lowest that Arenado has slotted in his four seasons with the Cardinals.
