    • Facing his old team for the first time, Hiroki Kuroda outdueled Hyun-Jin Ryu with 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball as the Yankees beat the Dodgers 6-4 in the first game of a doubleheader.
Advice: The Yankees were up 3-0 when Ryu left after six before Kuroda gave up both of his runs in the seventh. Fortunately, the Yankees were able to build on from there, and the two-run home run that Preston Claiborne gave up to Hanley Ramirez in the eighth didn't cost Kuroda the win. It was his first since May 17. The Yankees had scored a total of seven runs in his previous five starts.

    • Yu Darvish allowed five runs -- four earned -- in six innings in a loss to the A's on Tuesday.
Advice: Even Darvish's bad starts aren't all that bad, as he still managed to strike out 10 A's batters. Still, you could tell he didn't have his best stuff, as he served up homers to John Jaso and Brandon Moss among his six hits allowed. He'll go again Sunday in St. Louis in an interleague matchup.

    • Dodgers activated LHP Chris Capuano from the 15-day disabled list.
Advice: Capuano will start against the Yankees in the second half of Wednesday's doubleheader. The left-hander wound up missing a little under three weeks with a left lat strain. He has an ugly 5.45 ERA in 33 innings this year.

    • An MRI taken Wednesday on Brandon Morrow's troublesome right forearm showed no major damage.
Advice: Morrow felt lingering discomfort in his forearm Monday after going two innings in a rehab start at High-A Dunedin. He will refrain from throwing for a week or so to let the inflammation that is bothering him go away. Morrow remains sidelined indefinitely.

    • Brandon Morrow (forearm) suffered a physical setback Monday in his rehab start at High-A Dunedin.

    • Brandon Morrow (forearm) will make his first minor league rehab start Monday with High-A Dunedin.
Advice: Morrow, out since May 28 with a right forearm strain, is slated to throw 45-50 pitches. Assuming all goes well Monday, he's expected to test himself against more advanced competition in his next rehab start before coming off the disabled list. That would set him up for a return before the end of the month.

    • Brandon Morrow (forearm) threw 40 pitches in a bullpen session Friday.
Advice: Morrow has been sidelined since May 28 with a right forearm strain. He's scheduled to pitch in a game on Monday, though it isn't clear whether it will be a simulated game or an official rehab start. Either way, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons believes that he won't need more than two rehab stars before coming off the disabled list. It sounds like a return before the end of the month is realistic.

    • Dylan Axelrod allowed five runs -- four earned -- over six innings in a no-decision against the Twins on Tuesday.
Advice: Axelrod was actually somewhat fortunate to allow just the four earned runs, as he surrendered 10 hits and two walks on the night. The right-hander has hit a bit of a rough stretch, as he hasn't gotten a win since May 26. He'll try to correct that Sunday in Kansas City.

    • Chris Perez (shoulder) will not be activated from the disabled list this Friday.
Advice: The original plan was to bring him back for the weekend but Perez yielded three homers (and five runs in total) during a rehab appearance Tuesday night at Double-A Akron. The Indians want to get him a little more work against minor league competition. Vinnie Pestano will remain the Indians' primary ninth-inning man.

    • Chris Perez (shoulder) allowed three homers and five runs in an inning of work in his second rehab appearance with Double-A Akron.
Advice: Perez gave up five hits overall and also hit a batter. The right-hander was supposed to be activated from the disabled list on Friday, but the Indians might re-think that after tonight's showing. Vinnie Pestano owners should hang on to him.

    • Chris Perez (shoulder) is expected to be activated from the disabled list Friday.
Advice: Perez, out since May 26 with shoulder soreness, allowed two hits and struck out one Sunday in his first rehab appearance with Low-A Lake County. He'll have to make it through another appearance Tuesday, but it sounds like he's on track to return later this week. Vinnie Pestano will continue to serve as the fill-in closer for now, though he has only notched one save during Perez's absence.

Advice: Perez tossed multiple bullpen sessions this week and had no issues with his shoulder. He's on track to return to the Indians' bullpen within the next 3-4 days and should slide back into the ninth-inning role almost immediately. Perez is 6-for-8 in save opportunities this season.

    • Josh Collmenter allowed just one hit over six scoreless innings and struck out seven in relief of an injured Trevor Cahill against the Marlins on Wednesday.
Advice: Collmenter missed out on a start Tuesday, as the Diamondbacks picked Randall Delgado instead. He got what essentially was a start today anyway and was outstanding, though he didn't get a win out of it. He's 3-0 with a 2.43 ERA in 40 2/3 innings out of the pen this season.

    • Yoervis Medina pitched a perfect bottom of the 10th in a 3-2 game to earn the save as the Mariners edged the Angels on Tuesday.
Advice: Medina might have been in line for the save in the ninth anyway, given that Oliver Perez was used to pitch a scoreless seventh with the Mariners up 2-1. Tom Wilhelmsen let that lead get away in the eighth, but the Mariners reclaimed it in the 10th after Erick Aybar couldn't quite get a handle on Kendrys Morales' sharp liner over his head. Medina went on to retire Albert Pujols, Mark Trumbo and Howie Kendrick in order for the save. He's now a candidate for more saves, though he has the same sort of control troubles as Wilhelmsen. Even after tonight, he's walked 11 in his last 13 1/3 innings of work.

    • Nathan Eovaldi pitched six innings of two-run ball Tuesday against the Diamondbacks in his season debut.
Advice: Back from a shoulder injury, Eovaldi allowed just three hits tonight and he made it through six innings in a modest 84 pitches. That he's a Marlin really cuts into his fantasy upside -- wins will be very difficult to come by -- but he should have a little value in NL-only leagues anyway.

Advice: Pelfrey was only slightly better than his counterpart, Dylan Axelrod, as both starters allowed 10 hits over six innings. On the plus side, Pelfrey didn't walk a batter in the outing, only the second time he's done that all season. He's stuck at 3-6 and hasn't recorded a win in over a month, with the last coming on May 5. He'll search for his fourth win against the Indians Sunday in Cleveland.

    • After having his last start skipped, Joe Blanton allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings and struck out 11 against the Mariners on Tuesday.
Advice: That's a nice Quality Start for Blanton, but he still gave up two more homers (Raul Ibanez and Justin Smoak went back-to-back in the second inning), bringing his season total to 15 surrendered in 83 1/3 innings. He has pitched effectively in four of his last five outings, but an easier schedule has had a lot to do with that.

    • Reds placed RHP Jonathan Broxton on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 14, with a right elbow flexor strain.
Advice: Broxton has a 4.33 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 20/11 K/BB ratio through his first 27 innings this season, so it provides some context for his struggles. The Reds expect Broxton to return on June 29 when first eligible.

    • Matt Cain was denied a win after holding the Padres to two runs in seven innings and striking out a season-high 10 on Tuesday.
Advice: Cain left with a one-run lead, but that was blown by Jeremy Affeldt in the eighth. He's allowed just three runs over 20 2/3 innings in his last three starts, lowering his ERA from 5.45 to 4.55. • Mopping up against the Orioles, Jose Valverde gave up four runs and five hits in the ninth Wednesday.
Advice: The Tigers were already down 9-3, so Valverde's showing didn't hurt the team. It did, however, demonstrate once again why he's a really hard guy to trust. When Chris Davis took him deep today, it upped his total to six homers allowed in 19 1/3 innings.

It's not exactly a vote of confidence, but it sounds like they will stick with him for now. The 35-year-old has a 4.15 ERA, three blown saves and five homers allowed in just 18 appearances this season. We don't expect him to last the entire season in the closer role.

    • Heath Bell gave up a homer in a fourth straight appearance Wednesday, yet he still picked up his 13th save against the Marlins.
Advice: The homer by Justin Ruggiano only brought the Marlins to within 3-1. Bell, however, did allow a hit and a walk afterwards as part of a 31-pitch ninth inning. Fortunately for him, the Diamondbacks now have Thursday off, giving him a chance to recover. Bell, though, is leaving the door wide open for J.J. • Heath Bell was charged with the loss after allowing a ninth inning solo homer to Giancarlo Stanton in a tie game Monday.
Advice: Entering a 2-2 contest in the top of the ninth, Bell struck out Ed Lucas before Stanton homered to right. Bell (4.23 ERA, 1.52 WHIP) has allowed a home run in three consecutive appearances. Consider it a course-correction after he enjoyed some good luck earlier this season. With J.J. Advice: Both of those runs scored on a Cody Ross three-run homer after Fernandez departed. Fernandez allowed just three hits for the third time in his last four starts. He has a 1.65 ERA in 27 1/3 innings during June.

    • Jose Fernandez struck out a career-high 10 batters while allowing three runs -- two earned -- in seven innings as part of a 5-4 win over the Cardinals.
Advice: Impressive. Fernandez is the first pitcher under 21 years old to reach-double strikeouts since Mariners' ace Felix Hernandez did it in 2007. The rookie right-hander has allowed three runs or fewer in eight out of his last nine starts and owns an excellent 3.11 ERA and 77/27 K/BB ratio over 72 2/3 innings this season. The club is hoping that Francis will agree to stick around for depth, but he has the option of choosing free agency because of his major league service time.
