    • R.J. Alvarez goes to A's with Hahn
Athletics acquired RHP R.J. Alvarez from the Padres in the Derek Norris trade.

Advice: Alvarez has now been traded twice in five months, as he went from the Angels to the Padres in the Huston Street deal. The 23-year-old allowed just one run in eight innings with the Padres and posted a 1.25 ERA and 61/13 K/BB ratio over 43 1/3 Double-A frames last season. Sean Doolittle is locked in as the A's closer, but Alvarez has the upside to eventually pitch in the ninth inning. Rotoworld.com

    • Norris lands with Padres in four-player trade
Padres acquired C Derek Norris, RHP Seth Streich and international bonus slot 117 from the Athletics in exchange for RHPs R.J. Alvarez and Jesse Hahn.

Advice: The trade was reported a couple hours ago and has already been made official. An All-Star in 2014, Norris batted .270/.361/.403 with 10 homers for the A's last season. He's struggled defensively and against right-handed pitching, but Norris should still be an above-average offensive catcher even if he doesn't improve versus righties. Rotoworld.com

    • Joe Wieland acquired by Dodgers
Dodgers acquired RHP Joe Wieland from the Padres in the Matt Kemp trade.

Advice: Wieland has logged just 85 1/3 innings since the beginning of 2012 due to elbow issues, but he'll enter spring training healthy. The Dodgers are set in their rotation for now, but Wieland will be among the top candidates to fill in once the inevitable Brett Anderson injury comes. Rotoworld.com

    • Padres get Tim Federowicz in Kemp deal
Padres acquired C Tim Federowicz from the Dodgers in the Matt Kemp trade.

Advice: Federowicz has a strong defensive reputation but has hit just .194/.247/.300 over his first 271 big league plate appearances. With Derek Norris and Ryan Hanigan on the roster, Federowicz is headed to Triple-A to start the season. Rotoworld.com

    • Padres make deal for Matt Kemp official
Padres acquired OF Matt Kemp, C Tim Federowicz and cash considerations from the Dodgers in exchange for C Yasmani Grandal and RHPs Joe Wieland and Zach Eflin.

Advice: The trade took longer than expected to be officially completed, reportedly due to the discovery of Kemp dealing with arthritis in both hips, but it's now in the books. San Diego will receive $32 million to cover a big portion of the $107 million Kemp is still owed. Kemp had a nice bounce-back season in 2014, batting .287/.346/.506 with 25 homers and 89 RBI. He'll be surrounded by less talent than he was last season, though the Padres have done their best to rebuild their offense. Rotoworld.com

    • Smith given verbal assurance of no trade
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Seth Smith was given verbal assurance when he signed an extension that he would not be traded this offseason.

Advice: As Rosenthal notes, the assurance came before A.J. Preller took over as general manager. However, the same ownership is still in place, and while they don't technically have to honor the verbal agreement, it would look pretty bad if they didn't. Smith has drawn trade interest with the Padres suddenly overflowing with outfielders, but it sounds like he might be staying put. Rotoworld.com

    • Padres get Norris from A's for Hahn, Alvarez
Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reports that the Padres have acquired Derek Norris from the Athletics.

Advice: Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan says the Padres are also getting pitching prospect Seth Streich and an international signing slot, while the A's will receive Jesse Hahn and R.J. Alvarez. It's yet another big trade made by general manager Billy Beane, who has decided to shake up the roster after another brief playoff appearance. An All-Star in 2014, Norris batted .270/.361/.403 with 10 homers for the A's last season. He's not eligible for arbitration until after 2015. Hahn is a big get for the A's and should be able to slide into Jeff Samardzija's rotation spot nicely. Alvarez could eventually be a closer candidate in Oakland. Rotoworld.com

    • Matt Kemp trade expected to be completed
Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports reports that the Dodgers and Padres "have worked through lingering issues" and the Matt Kemp trade is "all but done."

Advice: USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported earlier Thursday that the holdup with the Kemp trade was due to the physical revealing arthritis in both of Kemp's hips. Despite the revelation, ESPN's Ramona Shelburne says the Dodgers will not have to give up any more than the $32 million they originally agreed to. The Padres will also receive Tim Federowicz from the Dodgers, with the Dodgers receiving Yasmani Grandal, Joe Wieland, and Zach Eflin. Eflin will then be flipped to the Phillies for Jimmy Rollins. • Rockies showing interest in Harang, Correia
MLB.com's Thomas Harding reports that the Rockies are showing interest in Aaron Harang, Kevin Correia and Kyle Kendrick.

Advice: Their interest in Correia and Kendrick had already been reported, but Harang's name is new. Harding also lists the Rockies as having interest in Josh Johnson, but he's reportedly close to re-signing with the Padres. Harang had a solid season for the Braves in 2014, posting a 3.57 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and 161/71 K/BB ratio in 204 1/3 innings. However, he's a flyball pitcher who would probably be a terrible fit at Coors Field. Rotoworld.com

    • Padres close to 1-yr deal with Josh Johnson
Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan reports that Josh Johnson is on the verge of a one-year deal with the Padres.

Advice: CBS Sports' Jon Heyman says Johnson's base salary will be less than $2 million but he'll have the chance to make as much as $8 million through incentives. The Padres declined a $4 million option on Johnson back in October, but they have remained interested in bringing him back at a lesser rate. And it appears that they'll be able to get it done. The deal is expected to include incentives based on games started. The Padres just signed another injury-prone pitcher, Brandon Morrow, earlier this week. Rotoworld.com

    • Medlen expected to pitch in second half
Royals general manager Dayton Moore said Thursday that they are looking at Kris Medlen (elbow) as someone who will be able to contribute in the second half in 2015.

Advice: Medlen, who is coming off a second Tommy John surgery this past March, was signed to a two-year, $8.5 million contract with a $10 million mutual option for 2017. The Royals are going to be extra careful about pushing him too soon. Rotoworld.com

Royals designated INF Johnny Giavotella for assignment.

Advice: The move clears a spot for the newly-signed Kris Medlen on the 40-man roster. Giavotella was once considered a promising prospect with the Royals, but he owns a .238/.277/.334 batting line over 465 plate appearances in the majors and turns 28 next July. Rotoworld.com

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that free agent Ichiro Suzuki is "receiving some consideration" from the Orioles.

Advice: Baltimore is currently in the mix for a number of free agent outfielders, including Colby Rasmus, Norichika Aoki, and Delmon Young. Ichiro batted just .284/.324/.340 in 143 games this past season for the Yankees. He turned 41 years old in late October. Rotoworld.com

    • Royals sign Kris Medlen to 2-yr, $8.5M pact
Royals signed RHP Kris Medlen to a two-year, $8.5 million contract with a $10 million mutual option for 2017.

Advice: Atlanta non-tendered Medlen earlier this month to avoid paying him nearly $6 million in 2015 via salary arbitration. He's recovering from a second Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery and probably won't be ready by Opening Day for the Royals, but the 29-year-old boasts a 2.95 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 512 2/3 career major league innings. It's a worthwhile risk for Kansas City at only $8.5 million guaranteed. Rotoworld.com

Rockies signed C Audry Perez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Advice: Perez appeared in one game this past season for the Cardinals. The 25-year-old catcher has a troubling .293 career on-base percentage in the minor leagues and probably won't see much action in Colorado. Rotoworld.com

Athletics acquired LHP Eury de la Rosa from the Diamondbacks for cash considerations.

Advice: The 24-year-old left-hander was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks last week to clear a spot for one of the players Arizona brought back in the Wade Miley trade. He owns a 4.21 ERA in 51 1/3 major league innings but had promising numbers in 2014. Rotoworld.com

    • Matt Kemp trade held up due to hip arthritis
According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the holdup with the Matt Kemp trade is due to the physical revealing arthritis in both of Kemp's hips.

Advice: Kemp's agent, Junior Spivey, told FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal on Thursday morning that "everything is OK" and he is "just waiting on the final details" of the deal to be sorted out, but maybe this thing really will fall apart. Kemp is signed through 2019, and hip arthritis sounds like the type of ailment that is only going to get worse as he moves later into his 30s. Kemp was supposed to be headed to the Padres along with catcher Tim Federowicz in exchange for Yasmani Grandal, Joe Wieland, and Zach Eflin. Nightengale says the Friars are consulting medical experts. Rotoworld.com

    • Kemp 'waiting on final details' for SD trade
Matt Kemp's agent Junior Spivey said Thursday that he's "just waiting on the final details" for the trade that will send his client to the Padres.

Advice: There have been murmurings that something troublesome was found during Kemp's physical exam, but Spivey told Rosenthal that "everything is OK" and the four-player trade sending Yasmani Grandal, Joe Wieland, and Zach Eflin to Los Angeles "should be good to go." The Padres may be trying to get the Dodgers to take on a bit more of the $107 million that Kemp is owed. Right now, L.A. is set to cover $31 million. Rotoworld.com

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Rockies are "looking at" free agent Kyle Kendrick.

Advice: Kendrick has a decent career groundball rate, which is a nice fit for the light air of Coors Field, but the 30-year-old right-hander also owns a putrid 4.42 career ERA and 4.9 career K/9 in eight major league seasons. Colorado continues to aim low. Rotoworld.com

    • Seth Smith being discussed in trade talks
ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports he's hearing Seth Smith's name often in trade talks.

Advice: With the recent deals for Matt Kemp and Wil Myers the Padres suddenly have an excess of outfielders. Smith got off to a great start to his 2014 season before finishing with a .266/.367/.440 line. Smith, 32, is due $6 million next season and is signed through 2016 with a club option for 2017, so he could be an attractive option for a team in need of left-handed power in the corner outfield or at first base. • Padres still 'inconclusive' on Kemp physical
A Padres official told Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports that the team is "still inconclusive" in its evaluation of Matt Kemp's physical.

Advice: The official also said the trade is "not yet" in jeopardy, and Rosenthal notes that the Dodgers have been told nothing in regards to concerns about the physical. The Padres were supposed to meet Wednesday to discuss the physical in advance of Thursday's deadline to complete the deal. There's certainly cause for concern that the trade won't be completed as-is, but we'll just have to wait and see how everything shakes out. Rotoworld.com

    • Padres meeting to discuss Kemp physical
USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported that the Padres are meeting to discuss the results of Matt Kemp's physical.

Advice: This confirms a report from FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal. According to Nightengale, the Padres "believe that [Kemp's] physical is fine," but are "still waiting for final details." Should the trade go through, the pieces expected to head to the Dodgers are Yasmani Grandal, Joe Wieland and Zach Eflin. Eflin is then expected to be flipped to the Phillies in the Jimmy Rollins deal. In addition to the Kemp situation, the team is also in the midst of discussing a trade with the Rays for Wil Myers. Bleacher Report's Will Carroll hears that "rumors....are starting to get louder" about a possible failed physical by OF Matt Kemp.

Advice: Kemp was all set to be traded to the Padres for Yasmani Grandal, Joe Wieland and Zach Eflin pending a physical. It's important to note that nothing is official, but the silence on the situation is curious. Kemp has suffered numerous injuries over the course of his career. When he's healthy, he's been an elite bat. Rotoworld.com

    • Matt Kemp to take Padres physical on Tuesday
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that Matt Kemp will take his physical with the Padres on Tuesday.

Advice: That means that the two sides have until then to iron out the specifics of the trade. It is believed to be Kemp and catcher Tim Federowicz heading to the Dodgers in exchange for Yasmani Grandal, Joe Wieland and Zach Eflin. What's not clear is the exact amount of money that the Dodgers will be sending to make the deal work, believed to be around $31 million. As long as Kemp passes his physical, the deal should become official on Tuesday. Rotoworld.com

Diamondbacks designated LHP Eury de la Rosa for assignment.

Advice: With the Wade Miley deal bringing back three players from the Red Sox, the D'Backs needed to clear room on the 40-man roster and de la Rosa was the casualty. The 24-year-old did a nice job out of the bullpen for the Snakes in 2014, posting a 2.95 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 32/14 K/BB ratio in 36 2/3 innings. He shouldn't be looking for work for long. The Dodgers are also sending around $31 million to the Padres to cover part of Kemp's remaining $107 million in guaranteed salaries. • Zaidi says Kemp-to-Padres trade isn't close
Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi said Tuesday that reports of a Matt Kemp trade to the Padres being close are "wishful thinking."

Advice: "I would not characterize it that way," Zaidi said. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported earlier Tuesday that a deal sending Kemp to the Padres for Yasmani Grandal and others was "getting closer," but Zaidi obviously doesn't see it that way. Rosenthal is the best in the business, so this could just be some posturing by the Dodgers GM. Rotoworld.com
