    • The Rockies will option Jeff Francis to Triple-A Colorado Springs prior to Thursday's game.
Advice: The move won't be made official until the Rockies call up Roy Oswalt. The club is hoping that Francis will agree to stick around for depth, but he has the option of choosing free agency because of his major league service time. He's put up a 6.58 ERA and 1.56 WHIP this season and wouldn't figure to net a major league deal elsewhere.

    • Jeff Francis allowed eight runs in six innings in a loss to the Blue Jays on Tuesday.
Advice: Francis did little right on Tuesday, giving up 10 hits -- including three homers -- while striking out only two. The outing left the southpaw with a 6.58 ERA and 1.56 WHIP on the season. There's been speculation for a while, but with Roy Oswalt set to make his Rockies debut on Thursday this start has the looks of Francis' last with the club.

    • Santiago Casilla (knee) will throw a bullpen session Thursday.
Advice: It will be his first since he had a cyst removed from his right knee last month. While Casilla was originally expected to be out until the second half of the season, it appears he could rejoin the Giants' bullpen prior to the All-Star break.

    • Santiago Casilla (knee) is expected to throw off a mound within the next week.
Advice: Casilla had a cyst removed from his right knee late last month but has recovered quicker than expected. It appears that he'll rejoin the Giants' bullpen prior to the All-Star break.

    • Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Friday that Santiago Casilla (knee) could be activated from the disabled list in 2-3 weeks.
Advice: Good news, as Casilla was originally expected to be out until a little past the All-Star break. The veteran reliever threw off flat ground Friday for the first time since surgery and will continue to build his workload for now.

    • Dylan Axelrod allowed five runs -- four earned -- over six innings in a no-decision against the Twins on Tuesday.
Advice: Axelrod was actually somewhat fortunate to allow just the four earned runs, as he surrendered 10 hits and two walks on the night. The right-hander has hit a bit of a rough stretch, as he hasn't gotten a win since May 26. He'll try to correct that Sunday in Kansas City.

    • Nationals activated 2B Danny Espinosa from the 15-day disabled list; optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse.
Advice: An expected move, as Espinosa batted just .118 (2-for-17) with 10 strikeouts over six rehab games in Triple-A. His wrist is apparently feeling better, but he'll need to have better results before returning to the majors. Anthony Rendon will continue to handle second base duties for the Nats for now.

    • Danny Espinosa (wrist) said that he felt fine after his first minor league rehab game with Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday.
Advice: Espinosa went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a strikeout in the contest. Nationals' skipper Davey Johnson indicated that he wants Espinosa to regain his timing and to feel good about himself from both sides of the plate before returning to the lineup.

    • Prince Fielder went 0-for-4 on Wednesday and is without a homer since June 4.
Advice: Fielder has been hitting for average of late, but except for a three-game surge at the beginning of the month, the power hasn't been there. He has a total of five homers and 27 RBI in 44 games since May 1 after totaling seven homers and 27 RBI in 25 games in April. Fortunately, since he's hitting behind Miguel Cabrera, he's still driving in runs with singles and doubles.

    • Prince Fielder went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI, helping to lead the Tigers to a 4-0 victory over the Twins in Minnesota on Friday.
Advice: Rick Porcello and Scott Diamond were engaged in a scoreless pitcher's duel heading into the sixth inning, where Fielder's two-run double broke the game open and provided more than enough support for the Tigers. He's having another excellent season, hitting .289/.390/.536 with 12 homers and 52 RBI.

    • Luke Gregerson gave up hits to all four Giants he faced and took a blown save and a loss on Wednesday.
Advice: Gregerson has already pushed back into a setup role with Huston Street back, but he's still struggling. He's given up six runs and 11 hits over 3 2/3 innings in his last five appearances.

    • Heath Bell gave up a homer in a fourth straight appearance Wednesday, yet he still picked up his 13th save against the Marlins.
Advice: The homer by Justin Ruggiano only brought the Marlins to within 3-1. Bell, however, did allow a hit and a walk afterwards as part of a 31-pitch ninth inning. Fortunately for him, the Diamondbacks now have Thursday off, giving him a chance to recover. Bell, though, is leaving the door wide open for J.J. Putz to reclaim closing duties should Putz's rehab progress as hoped.

  • Tue, Jun 18
    • Heath Bell was charged with the loss after allowing a ninth inning solo homer to Giancarlo Stanton in a tie game Monday.
Advice: Entering a 2-2 contest in the top of the ninth, Bell struck out Ed Lucas before Stanton homered to right. Bell (4.23 ERA, 1.52 WHIP) has allowed a home run in three consecutive appearances. Consider it a course-correction after he enjoyed some good luck earlier this season. With J.J. Putz (elbow) close to returning, the clock on Bell's reign as closer may be ticking.

    • Nick Swisher (shoulder) is expected to return to the Indians' starting lineup this Saturday.
Advice: That's contingent on a batting practice session going well on Friday. Swisher hasn't placed since last Saturday because of a sore left shoulder. He was given a cortisone injection to treat the discomfort earlier this week and is apparently feeling much better.

    • Nick Swisher received a cortisone shot in his left shoulder and is likely to be sidelined until at least Friday.
Advice: The shoulder has been an ongoing issue for Swisher, who aggravated the injury during Sunday's game. An MRI has ruled out any structural damage, but the Indians haven't ruled out the possibility of a stint on the disabled list. The Indians figure to see how he responds to the shot before making a roster move.

    • Nick Swisher's nagging left shoulder injury could force him to the disabled list.
Advice: Swisher has been battling the ailment all season and aggravated it during Saturday's game. He's in a 6-for-55 slump, which no doubt is due in part to the injury. "I've been battling this shoulder thing the whole year. It's super frustrating for me because I've never had something like this," he said. "Either way, we have to figure out what is going on and then we will go from there."

    • Josh Collmenter allowed just one hit over six scoreless innings and struck out seven in relief of an injured Trevor Cahill against the Marlins on Wednesday.
Advice: Collmenter missed out on a start Tuesday, as the Diamondbacks picked Randall Delgado instead. He got what essentially was a start today anyway and was outstanding, though he didn't get a win out of it. He's 3-0 with a 2.43 ERA in 40 2/3 innings out of the pen this season.

    • Shin-Soo Choo will bat second Wednesday against the Pirates.

    • Matt Cain was denied a win after holding the Padres to two runs in seven innings and striking out a season-high 10 on Tuesday.
Advice: Cain left with a one-run lead, but that was blown by Jeremy Affeldt in the eighth. He's allowed just three runs over 20 2/3 innings in his last three starts, lowering his ERA from 5.45 to 4.55. He did have a streak of five straight starts without allowing a homer snapped when he gave up two solo shots tonight.

    • Chris Perez (shoulder) will be re-evaluated after a bullpen session on Friday.
Advice: Perez had been scheduled for activation that day, but that's been pushed back after he allowed three homers and five runs in a rehab appearance Tuesday. He's feeling fine physically, but the Indians want him to work on his mechanics, as they think he was coming open a little too soon in his delivery. Vinnie Pestano will continue to close for the Tribe for now.

    • Chris Perez (shoulder) allowed three homers and five runs in an inning of work in his second rehab appearance with Double-A Akron.
Advice: Perez gave up five hits overall and also hit a batter. The right-hander was supposed to be activated from the disabled list on Friday, but the Indians might re-think that after tonight's showing. Vinnie Pestano owners should hang on to him.

    • Chris Perez (shoulder) is expected to be activated from the disabled list Friday.
Advice: Perez, out since May 26 with shoulder soreness, allowed two hits and struck out one Sunday in his first rehab appearance with Low-A Lake County. He'll have to make it through another appearance Tuesday, but it sounds like he's on track to return later this week. Vinnie Pestano will continue to serve as the fill-in closer for now, though he has only notched one save during Perez's absence.

    • Chris Perez (shoulder) will throw one inning Sunday in a rehab game with Low-A Lake Country.
Advice: Perez tossed multiple bullpen sessions this week and had no issues with his shoulder. He's on track to return to the Indians' bullpen within the next 3-4 days and should slide back into the ninth-inning role almost immediately. Perez is 6-for-8 in save opportunities this season.

    • After having his last start skipped, Joe Blanton allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings and struck out 11 against the Mariners on Tuesday.
Advice: That's a nice Quality Start for Blanton, but he still gave up two more homers (Raul Ibanez and Justin Smoak went back-to-back in the second inning), bringing his season total to 15 surrendered in 83 1/3 innings. He has pitched effectively in four of his last five outings, but an easier schedule has had a lot to do with that.

    • Joe Blanton will start for the Angels on Tuesday against the Mariners.
Advice: Blanton was skipped over the weekend, but he hasn't lost his spot in the rotation, at least not yet. He holds a 5.87 ERA and 1.63 WHIP for the season but has, for the most part, pitched better of late.

    • Hanley Ramirez went 4-for-4 and hit a two-run homer as the Dodgers' designated hitter in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader.
Advice: The availability of the DH in New York this week was well timed for Hanley, who is still dealing with a balky hamstring. No word yet on whether he'll play the field, DH again or sit in the nightcap versus the Yankees.

    • Hanley Ramirez is not in the Dodgers' lineup Sunday.

    • Hanley Ramirez is back in the Dodgers' lineup Friday.
Advice: Ramirez has been limited to pinch-hitting over the last week after aggravating his left hamstring injury. He's certainly at risk of hurting it again, but the Dodgers feel he's good enough to give it a go.
