    • Snaps out of slump
Gonzales went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored Tuesday against the Reds.

Advice: Gonzales was in a cold spell entering Tuesday's contest, as he had gone just 1-for-23 with eight strikeouts across his past seven games. He snapped out of that slump with his second three-hit performance of the season. Despite the recent downturn, Gonzales has enjoyed his most sustained success in the majors, maintaining a .282 average and .755 OPS across 161 plate appearances. • Brett Wisely finishes 2-for-4 in Giants’ victory
Brett Wisely went 2-for-4 with a run scored from the leadoff spot in the Giants’ 5-1 defeat of the Cubs on Tuesday.

Advice: Wisely’s second hit, a 403-foot double to left-center, would have been a homer in 29 of 30 ballparks and really a no-doubter in most of them. Oracle Park isn’t built that way, though. Wisely, who has turned into the Giants’ shortstop versus righties, is batting an impressive .301/.333/.441 in 99 plate appearances. Rotoworld Tuesday, 9:43 pm

    • Nick Gonzales has three hits in win
Nick Gonzales went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in a win over the Reds on Tuesday.

Advice: It was a much-needed strong game for Gonzales, who came into today hitting just .224 in 20 games in June. The 25-year-old is still barreling the ball 11 percent in 2024 but his groundball rate has gone up to 52 percent in June and he’s pulling the ball more, which has led to more rollover groundballs and fewer line drives all over the field. He remains a consistent part of the Pirates lineup but more games like this would be nice to see. Rotoworld Tuesday, 7:29 pm

    • Playing time trending upward
Espinal will start at third base and bat seventh in Monday's game against the Pirates.

Advice: Espinal will occupy third base for the fifth time in six games, with three of those starts coming against right-handers. For the second time during that stretch, Espinal will take aim at Pirates lefty Bailey Falter, who takes the hill for the Pirates on Monday. Espinal will carry a five-game hitting streak into Monday's contest, and he could end up handling a near-everyday role in the Cincinnati infield until the team elects to reinstate Noelvi Marte (suspension) to the big-league roster. Marte's 80-game suspension comes to an end Thursday, but he's struggled during his rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville and could be optioned if the Reds prefer to hand Espinal regular playing time. • Getting Monday off
Rocchio is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Orioles.

Advice: Rocchio will get a breather after he started at shortstop in each of the Guardians' last four games while going 3-for-12 with a double and a walk. Gabriel Arias (personal) was reinstated from the family medical emergency list Monday and will be thrust into the lineup immediately upon his return, replacing Rocchio at shortstop. • Rough start in leadoff role
Schuemann hit leadoff in both of the Athletics' games against the Twins over the weekend after Abraham Toro's (hamstring) placement on the injured list, going 0-for-8 with four strikeouts.

Advice: Schuemann, who went into Saturday's game having reached safely in four straight, may not be long for the top of the order given the results, although manager Mark Kotsay might exhibit some patience. Toro has put together a .240 average and .613 OPS as the leadoff hitter this season, so the standard he's set isn't extraordinarily high by any means. Nevertheless, there are several other candidates Kotsay could turn to for the role, so Schuemann, who's most frequently hit in the No. 7 and No. 9 spots this season, could soon shift back down the order. • Closing in on rehab assignment
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Monday that Edman (wrist) could begin a rehab assignment soon, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Edman has taken live at-bats from both sides of the plate in recent days and his surgically repaired right wrist has responded well. Since he's resided on the injured list all season, the 29-year-old would presumably require an extended minor-league rehab assignment before being activated, but he's tracking toward a return to the Cardinals before the All-Star break. • Sitting Sunday
Gonzales isn't in the Pirates' lineup for Sunday's game against the Rays.

Advice: Gonzales will get a chance to regroup Sunday after going 1-for-17 with five strikeouts over his last five games. In his place, Jared Triolo will get the nod at the keystone and bat sixth. Rotowire.com Sunday, 8:58 am

    • Two solo shots in loss
Kiner-Falefa went 2-for-3 with two solo home runs and a hit-by-pitch in Saturday's 6-3 loss to the Guardians.

Advice: Kiner-Falefa had not posted an extra-base hit over his previous 10 games, though he hit .281 (9-for-32) in that span. The 29-year-old also snapped a homer drought dating back to May 26. For the season, he's up to six homers in 75 contests, matching his total form 115 games a year ago. He's added a .281/.325/.408 slash line with 31 RBI, 22 runs scored and three stolen bases. He had exclusively hit in the bottom third of the order, but he was batting leadoff for Saturday's contest -- a move up the order would likely lead to better overall production if he can stay there.
