    • Throws off mound
Miller (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Friday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Miller has been on the injured list since April 13 due to inflammation in his right shoulder, and Friday marked his first time throwing off a mound since then. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he isn't sure how many more bullpen sessions Miller will need to throw before he progresses to facing live hitters, so the 25-year-old righty will likely remain without a clear return timeline until he gets to that point. • Craig Kimbrel (back) ready to resume closer’s role
Orioles’ manager Brandon Hyde told reporters on Friday that Craig Kimbrel (back) is ready to return to the team’s closer role.

Advice: He may have gotten there sooner if the Orioles had a save chance arise over the past couple of days, but it sounds like the 35-year-old hurler is ready to rock for the weekend. Any usefulness that Yennier Cano may have had from a fantasy perspective is now gone in most mixed leagues. Rotoworld Yesterday, 3:14 pm
    • Available Friday
Manager Brandon Hyde said Kimbrel (back) is available as the Orioles' closer Friday in Cincinnati, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.comreports.

Advice: The 35-year-old hasn't seen the field since his back acted up Sunday against the A's, but he's ready to go after resting up over the past few days. Kimbrel allowed three runs and recorded just one out while blowing saves in each of his past two outings, though the injury may have played a role in those results. He has a 3.18 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB over 11.1 innings for the season. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 1:29 pm
    • Set for bullpen session
Cole (elbow) is expected to throw a bullpen session Saturday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

Advice: Cole will throw off a mound for the first time since being placed on the 60-day injured list with nerve irritation and edema in his right elbow in late March. The 33-year-old is reportedly targeting a return in "mid June," according to Heyman. The right-hander is eligible to be activated from the IL on May 27, but it appears as if he will remain sidelined for awhile longer than that. With his pedigree, it comes as no surprise that the Yankees are being cautious with their ace, who produced a 2.63 ERA with a 9.6 K/9 over 209 innings in 33 starts last year. • Report: Gerrit Cole targeting mid-June return
The New York Post’s Jon Heyman reports Gerrit Cole (elbow) is now targeting a mid-June return.

Advice: Heyman adds that Cole is scheduled to throw his first bullpen session on Saturday as he works his way back from nerve inflammation in his right elbow. The 33-year-old fantasy ace should progress to facing hitters in the coming weeks before heading out on a minor league rehab assignment. He was originally aiming for a late-May return, but it sounds like the Yankees don’t want to rush him back and risk a setback. Rotoworld Thursday, 5:42 pm

    • Max Scherzer targeting rehab outing next week
Max Scherzer (back, thumb) is likely to make a minor league rehab start next week.

Advice: Scherzer told reporters Thursday that his thumb is improving and he was able to resume playing catch without any issues. The hope is that he’ll be ready for a minor league outing at some point next week. Barring any further setbacks, he could return to Texas’ starting rotation mix by mid-May. • Three hits in Wednesday's loss
Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to Atlanta.

Advice: After going 0-for-8 in the first two games of the series, Rodriguez's bat woke up against Chris Sale. The 23-year-old outfielder has only had one sustained hot streak so far in 2024, but he's capable of sparking another one at any time. Through 129 plate appearances, Rodriguez is slashing .270/.310/.328 with one homer, seven steals, 11 RBI and 12 runs. Rotowire.com Thursday, 6:42 am
    • Tagged with loss in quality start
Bassitt (2-5) took the loss Wednesday, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk over six innings as the Blue Jays fell 6-1 to the Royals. He struck out four.

Advice: The veteran righty took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but a leadoff double by Kyle Isbel kicked off a three-run frame for Kansas City, and with Seth Lugo also pitching extremely well, Bassitt had no margin for error. He tossed 62 of 92 pitches for strikes in his third quality start of the season, but Bassitt will carry a shaky 5.45 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 34:18 K:BB through 36.1 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road next week in Philadelphia. • Goes seven innings in no-decision
Verlander pitched seven innings in a no-decision against the Guardians on Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two.

Advice: Verlander allowed the leadoff man to reach in four of his seven innings of work but managed to limit the damage to only two runs, both of which came across in the top of the fifth. The veteran right-hander struggled to get ahead in the count for much of the contest and has now issued at least three walks in back-to-back starts, though he's still held opposing teams to two or fewer runs in all three outings to open the campaign. Wednesday also marked Verlander's first start this season in which he's gone at least seven innings. Rotowire.com Thursday, 4:20 am
