    • Nearing mound work
Astros manager Joe Espada said Valdez (elbow) played catch Friday and could throw off a mound as soon as Saturday or Sunday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Advice: The left-hander quickly resumed throwing after landing on the injured list April 9 with elbow inflammation, and his return to mound work will be another encouraging step. Valdez won't be ready to return from the injured list when first eligible next week, but given his current progression he could seemingly be back with the Astros sometime in early May. • Framber Valdez (elbow) plays catch on Friday
Framber Valdez (elbow) played catch without issue on Friday.

Advice: The Astros are hopeful that he’ll be able to throw off of a mound for the first time on Saturday or Sunday as he continues to progress from the left elbow soreness that landed him on the injured list. If all continues to go according to plan, he won’t require a minor league rehab start before returning to the Astros’ rotation. Rotoworld Today, 1:51 pm

    • Takes seat Friday
Joe is out of the lineup for Friday's game versus Boston.

Advice: Joe is 4-for-21 over his past seven games and will take a seat for Friday's series opener. Jack Suwinski, Michael Taylor and Bryan Reynolds will start from left to right in the outfield. Rotowire.com Today, 1:05 pm

    • Justin Steele to throw bullpen session Sunday
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Justin Steele (hamstring) will throw a bullpen session on Sunday.

Advice: This will be Steele’s second bullpen session in the past two weeks. The 28-year-old threw a session last Saturday, but will continue to ramp up and eventually get some rehab starts before he joins the Cubs’ active roster. Steele isn’t expected to be back with the team until May. Rotoworld Today, 10:56 am

    • Slated for live BP Sunday
Steele (hamstring) will throw a live batting practice session Sunday, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: If Steele gets through the live BP with no issues, he could be cleared to begin a rehab assignment. The left-hander is working his way back from a left hamstring strain which he suffered back on Opening Day. It's not clear at this point how many rehab starts he might be asked to make before rejoining the Cubs' rotation. Rotowire.com Today, 9:23 am

    • Earns win in setup role
Leclerc (1-2) picked up the win Thursday, allowing two walks and striking out two over one scoreless inning in a 9-7 victory over the Tigers.

Advice: It was a wild affair in Detroit, as the Tigers came back from 4-0 and 7-4 deficits before the Rangers put it away in the final two innings. For Leclerc, it was his first time in what would be a considered a high-leverage spot since he was removed as the team's closer last weekend. He entered with two outs and two inherited runners in the seventh inning and escaped without damage. He became the pitcher of record an inning later when Texas broke a 7-7 tie. He worked around a pair of walks in the eighth before Kirby Yates came in for a four-out save. Since Leclerc lost the closer's job, the right-hander has not allowed a run and struck out six over four innings. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 6:10 pm
    • Smacks fifth homer
Abrams went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's win over the Dodgers.

Advice: He drove the second big-league pitch of Landon Knack's career over the fence in right-center field, giving the Nats all the offense they would need as Jake Irvin and the bullpen combined for a shutout. Abrams launched a career-high 18 homers in 2023 but is well ahead of that pace to begin this season, slashing .295/.358/.656 with five home runs, three steals, 10 runs and 11 RBI in 15 games. • Power surge continues Wednesday
Ozuna went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 5-4 extra-inning win over the Astros.

Advice: The veteran slugger got Atlanta on the board in the second inning, leading off the frame by crushing a J.P. France sweeper 432 feet to left field. Ozuna is tied with Mike Trout for the MLB lead with eight homers, and Wednesday's blast extended his hitting streak to 16 games -- a stretch in which he's slashed .379/.431/.788 with 13 runs and 23 RBI, in addition to all eight long balls. • Blows save Wednesday
Robertson gave up a run on two hits and a walk over 1.1 innings Wednesday, getting charged with his second blown save of the season in a 5-4 win over the Tigers. He struck out one.

Advice: The veteran right-hander entered the game with one on and one out in the seventh inning to protect a 4-3 lead, and while he escaped that small jam, Robertson couldn't stop Detroit from tying things up in the bottom of the eighth. It's only the second run he's allowed this season, and the 39-year-old has been busy to begin the year, posting a 1.69 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 10:4 K:BB through 10.2 innings. Despite those strong ratios, he's 0-for-2 in converting save chances while adding a win and six holds in his 10 appearances, while Kirby Yates seems to be strengthening his grip on the closer role for Texas.
