  • Phillies outright Kratz to Triple-A
Phillies sent C Erik Kratz outright to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Advice: Kratz had himself quite a ride this season. He started the year with the Royals, was subsequently designated for assignment in June before being picked up by the Red Sox, who then designated him for assignment, at which point he was picked up by the Mariners in early July, released in mid-July and signed by the Phillies on July 17. Phew. Across all of that action, he accrued five hits in 26 at-bats. He slashed .256/.351/.471 in the minors over 172 at-bats, which isn't too shabby considering his decidedly jumbled season. • White Sox outright Nieto to Double-A
White Sox sent C Adrian Nieto outright to Double-A Birmingham.

Advice: The move clears him from the 40-man roster. The former Rule 5 draft pick appeared in 48 games with the White Sox in 2014, but he played exclusively in Double-A this season while batting .207/.344/.316 over 81 games. Yesterday, 11:57 am

  • Brewers designate Ashley for assignment
Brewers designated C Nevin Ashley for assignment.

Advice: The move clears a spot for Junior Guerra on the 40-man roster. Ashley was a September call-up for the Brewers, but he was expendable. Yesterday, 11:51 am

  • Braves' Bethancourt undergoes knee surgery
Christian Bethancourt had arthroscopic surgery to repair the meniscus in his left knee.

Advice: Bethancourt should be able to resume workouts by the end of November, so it shouldn't impact his readiness for spring training. The 24-year-old is coming off a disappointing season where he batted just .200/.225/.290 in 160 plate appearances and had his share of struggles behind the plate. He could serve as a backup in 2016 if the Braves re-sign A.J. Pierzynski. Yesterday, 7:47 am

  • Robinson Chirinos (biceps) ready for ALDS
Robinson Chirinos (biceps) will be ready for the ALDS.

Advice: Chirinos missed much of September with a left biceps injury, but he got in a few games before the end of the regular season and will get a bunch more rest this week. The 31-year-old catcher posted a .762 OPS with 10 home runs and 34 RBI in 78 games this season. Monday, 1:02 pm
  • Murphy could start at C for NYY in WC Game
John Ryan Murphy could start over Brian McCann at catcher in Tuesday's AL Wild Card Game.

Advice: Astros starter Dallas Keuchel dominates left-handed-hitters and the right-handed-hitting Murphy registered a nice .770 OPS versus southpaws this season. It's probably the correct move. The lefty-swinging McCann would be a nice bat off the bench in the winner-moves-on tilt at Yankee Stadium. Monday, 12:18 pm
  • O'Brien to enter spring training as a catcher
Peter O'Brien will enter spring training next year as a catcher.

Advice: O'Brien expressed a desire to move back behind the plate after spending the 2015 season trying out corner outfield. The 25-year-old has a big bat, but he was never a very good defensive backstop and how he fits into the Diamondbacks' future plans is currently unclear. Welington Castillo should open the 2016 season as Arizona's starting catcher. Monday, 11:17 am
    W, 5-3 vs x Hou
  • Salty expects to test free agency this winter
Jarrod Saltalamacchia said Monday that he plans to test the free agent market this winter.

Advice: Salty had a minor resurgence after moving from Miami to Arizona this summer, posting an .805 OPS with eight home runs in 70 games (37 starts) for the Diamondbacks. The 30-year-old catcher said he wants to find a starting job, and the D'Backs are probably going to move forward with arbitration-eligible backstop Welington Castillo. Monday, 10:34 am
  • MRI on Tom Murphy's shoulder is clean
An MRI on Tom Murphy's left shoulder showed no major structural damage.

Advice: Murphy is dealing with a minor strain and contusion. The young catcher will now skip the Arizona Fall League but should be fine by the time spring training rolls around. Sunday, 11:38 am

  • Yan Gomes not in Sunday's lineup
Yan Gomes is not in the Indians' lineup Sunday.

Advice: He's getting some rest on the last day of the season. Roberto Perez will handle the catching duties. Sunday, 9:45 am

  • Maldonado singles for only hit off Hendricks
Martin Maldonado went 1-for-3 with a single in Saturday's loss to the Cubs.

Advice: The only reason Maldonado's single is even noteworthy is that it was the only hit the Brewers could manage against Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks over six innings. For the season, the 29-year-old backup catcher is hitting a paltry .212/.286/.296 with four homers and 22 RBI in 226 at-bats. Saturday, 7:11 pm
  • Tom Murphy leaves with left shoulder injury
Tom Murphy left Saturday's game against the Giants with a strained left shoulder.

Advice: He injured himself sliding back to second on a pickoff play. Dustin Garneau replaced Murphy behind the plate in the fifth inning. Murphy struck out and walked in his two plate appearances. Saturday, 3:36 pm

  • Wieters sitting out Game 2 of doubleheader
Matt Wieters is not in the Orioles' lineup for the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Yankees.

Advice: Wieters reached base five times with four walks and a single in the early portion of Saturday's double dip. For the nightcap, he'll sit in favor of Caleb Joseph. Wieters should be back for tomorrow's season finale. Saturday, 2:44 pm
    W, 9-4 vs ^ NYY
  • A.J. Pierzynski limited to pinch-hitting
A.J. Pierzynski (knee, ankle) will likely be limited to pinch-hitting for the rest of the season.

Advice: Pierzynski left Friday's game with a bruised left knee. He's also dealing with an ankle injury. With Christian Bethancourt (thumb) also hurt, Ryan Lavarnway is expected to catch Atlanta's final two games. Saturday, 1:51 pm

  • Wieters reaches base five times in win
Matt Wieters reached base in all five of his plate appearances Saturday against the Yankees.

Advice: Wieters singled and tied a career-high with four walks. This season hasn't been what the 29-year-old had in mind for his walk year, but he now owns a six-game hitting streak. Saturday, 12:28 pm
    W, 9-4 vs ^ NYY
  • Peter O'Brien homers off bench
Peter O'Brien homered off Dallas Keuchel in his lone at-bat off the bench Friday against the Astros.

Advice: It seems crazy that the Diamondbacks haven't given O'Brien a single start since his callup on Sept. 8, but it likely has a lot to do with his unsettled position situation. The team is again looking at making him a full-time catcher, even though he's never going to be very good back there. His bat remains intriguing. He's had just seven plate appearances since his callup, but he's 3-for-5 with two walks. It seems like the Diamondbacks really blew it by not giving him some starts in left. Friday, 10:29 pm
    W, 5-3 vs x Hou
  • Pierzynski leaves game with various injuries
A.J. Pierzynski was lifted from Friday's game against the Cardinals after getting hit by a pitch on his knee.

Advice: The veteran backstop also fouled a ball off his foot before departing. There's a strong chance that he's held out over the final two games of the season, leaving Christian Bethancourt to handle the catching duties. Friday, 8:39 pm

  • Casali (hamstring) done for season
Curt Casali (hamstring) will not play in any of the Rays' final three games.

Advice: Casali's been out since late August. At this point in the season, it makes little sense for the Rays to push him back into action. He finishes the 2015 campaign with a .238/.304/.594 triple-slash, 10 homers and 18 RBI over 101 at-bats covering 38 games. Friday, 1:49 pm

  • Rosario is open to possibility of trade
Willin Rosario told the Denver Post's Patrick Saunders that he's "good with it" if the Rockies want to trade him this off-season.

Advice: Prior to Thursday's game with the Diamondbacks, Rosario told the Post's Saunders "If they want to move me, I'm good with it. If it gives me a chance to play more, I'm fine with that." This season, the 26-year-old catcher is slashing .272/.298/.421 with six homers and 29 RBI over 228 at-bats. Said Rosario, "It's not been a very exciting season for me, and now the season is almost over." Friday, 7:08 am

  • Bethancourt leaves game with thumb contusion
Christian Bethancourt was forced to leave Thursday's game with a left thumb contusion.

Advice: Bethancourt first injured the thumb a couple of weeks ago while attempting to make a tag. He's considered day-to-day for the remainder of the season. Expect to see A.J. Pierzynski behind the dish on Friday. Thursday, 6:42 pm

  • Yan Gomes out of Indians' lineup Thursday
Yan Gomes is out of the Indians' lineup Thursday.

Advice: Roberto Perez will start at catcher and bat seventh against Twins right-hander Tyler Duffey. Gomes is wrapping up a frustrating and mostly-disappointing 2015 season. Thursday, 12:39 pm
    W, 3-1 vs x Bos
  • Pierzynski homers twice in win over Nationals
A.J. Pierzynski finished 3-for-3 with two home runs as the Braves topped the Nationals 2-1 on Tuesday.

Advice: Pierzynski was the only one able to get to Nationals starter Tanner Roark, as he finished with three of the team's five hits. That includes both of the team's runs, driven in on solo homers in the fourth and seventh innings. Pierzynski has quietly had a strong offensive season for the Braves, batting .299/.336/.429 with nine homers, 47 RBI and 38 runs in 111 games. Tuesday, 7:00 pm

  • Peter O'Brien wants to catch again
Peter O'Brien has told the Diamondbacks that he wants to return to the catcher position.

Advice: O'Brien had the yips when trying to throw the ball back to the pitcher earlier this season and eventually moved to the outfield. He doesn't think it will be an issue anymore, though, and he and the D'Backs would both like him to take another crack at things behind the plate. O'Brien would certainly make for a much more interesting prospect if he can stick at catcher. Tuesday, 4:57 pm

  • Casali (hamstring) might return this season
Curt Casali (hamstring) might play a few more games this year.

Advice: Casali is finally making progress in his recovery from a left hamstring strain -- an injury that landed him on the disabled list August 26. He has opened some eyes in limited action this year, registering an .898 OPS and 10 home runs in 38 games. Tuesday, 1:38 pm
