    • Jared Jones exits Wednesday start with lat strain
Jared Jones was removed from Wednesday’s start against the Cardinals after five innings due to a right lat strain.

Advice: The assumption when Jones was pulled after just 78 pitches was that it was simply another way for the Pirates’ to manager the 22-year-old hurler’s workload, but it sounds like there was an injury issue at play as well. Jones told reporters after the game that he wasn’t too concerned about it, but the Pirates aren’t going to take any unnecessary risks with him. His availability for next week’s start against the Mets is completely in the air at this point. Rotoworld Today, 7:04 pm

    • Exits with strained lat
Jones was removed from his start Wednesday versus St. Louis due to a right lat strain, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Jones managed to get through five innings of one-run ball while striking out five batters and walking two before coming out of Wednesday's contest. The 22-year-old said after the game that he could have kept pitching if necessary, but the team opted for a cautious approach in order to prevent his injury from worsening. Pittsburgh will keep an eye on Jones' lat as his next start approaches, but the initial level of concern seems relatively low. Rotowire.com Today, 7:01 pm

    • Jared Jones completes five frames vs. Cardinals
Jared Jones struck out five and yielded one run over five innings on Wednesday in a no-decision against the Cardinals.

Advice: Pittsburgh continues to carefully manage their prized rookie right-hander’s workload this season as Jones was limited to just 78 pitches (52 strikes) over five innings in this one after spinning seven innings on 94 pitches his last time out against the Rays. The 22-year-old rookie sensation generated 10 swinging strikes, with eight of those coming on his slider alone, and finished with a solid 33 percent CSW. He’ll bring a strong 3.56 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 98/27 K/BB ratio across 91 innings (16 starts) into a home outing on Monday against the Mets in his penultimate start prior to the Midsummer Classic. • Gavin Williams hit hard Wednesday in season debut
Gavin Williams was lit up for five runs over four innings on Wednesday in his season debut against the White Sox.

Advice: Williams looked sharp in his final few minor league rehab outings, so this certainly qualifies as an unexpected clunker, especially considering Chicago’s offensive struggles this season. The 24-year-old former top pitching prospect allowed a run-scoring single in the opening frame, but kept the White Sox off the scoreboard into the fourth inning before coughing up four runs on five hits in a disastrous frame. Perhaps the more concerning variable here for fantasy purposes is that he mustered just a pair of strikeouts in his long-awaited season debut. He’ll aim for better results his next time out on Monday against the division-rival Tigers. Rotoworld Today, 6:18 pm

    • Strikes out seven in win
Crawford (4-7) earned the win against the Marlins on Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and no walks with seven strikeouts over six innings.

Advice: Crawford allowed a solo home run to Jake Burger in the fifth inning but was otherwise fantastic, registering a whopping 16 swinging strikes on just 72 pitches. He only threw 23 pitches in a rain-shortened start Wednesday, but he's otherwise logged quality starts in his past four non-weather-impacted outings. On the season, the 28-year-old owns a 3.47 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 102:28 K:BB over 98.2 innings and lines up for a road matchup with the Yankees this weekend. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 8:16 pm

    • Kutter Crawford fans seven in victory over Marlins
Kutter Crawford struck out seven and allowed one run over six innings on Tuesday in a win over the Marlins.

Advice: Crawford took full advantage of a tasty matchup against the floundering Marlins at pitcher-friendly loanDepot park on Tuesday evening, retiring eight consecutive batters to open the contest, and carried a shutout bid into the fifth inning before serving up a solo homer to Jake Burger, which represented the lone tally against him over six frames. He generated 16 swinging strikes and finished with an astronomical 46 percent CSW. He’ll carry a solid 3.47 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 102/28 K/BB ratio across 98 2/3 innings (17 starts) into a challenging road tilt on Sunday against the Yankees in primetime. Get your popcorn ready. • Re-entering rotation Wednesday
Jones is listed as the Pirates' starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals at PNC Park.

Advice: Jones will slot back into the rotation for the first time since June 22 after the Pirates opted to skip his turn this past week. The decision to bypass Jones' turn wasn't based on any injury; instead, the Pirates are cognizant of keeping the 23-year-old right-hander's workload in check during his first season in the majors. The Pirates haven't offered up a firm innings limit for Jones in 2024 nor outlined their plans on when/if he might be skipped again, but fantasy managers shouldn't hesitate to keep him active when he's confirmed to start. Though he's had more trouble keeping walks in check in his recent starts compared to earlier in the campaign, Jones will still head into his 16th start of the season Wednesday with stellar ratios (3.66 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 19.4 K-BB%). • Making first start Wednesday
Williams (elbow), who was reinstated from the 60-day injured list earlier Sunday, is scheduled to make his first start of the season for the Guardians on Wednesday versus the White Sox at Progressive Field.

Advice: Williams' 30-day rehab window came to a close Sunday, so the Guardians brought him back from the IL a few days before he's set to make his 2024 MLB debut. The right-hander submitted a 7.88 ERA and 2.00 WHIP across eight innings over his first four rehab starts with Triple-A Columbus, but he looked strong his last two times out, turning in five- and four-inning starts while allowing two total runs and submitting a 10:2 K:BB between those outings. The Guardians will likely keep the 24-year-old's workload in check to some extent Wednesday, but based on how he concluded his rehab assignment, Williams might be worthy of activating this week while he faces off against a weak White Sox lineup. • Allows seven runs in loss
Gausman (6-7) suffered the loss Sunday, allowing seven runs on seven hits, five walks and a hit batsman against the Yankees. He struck out seven.

Advice: Gausman needed 107 pitches to record 13 outs, allowing season highs in runs (seven) and walks (five) while being tagged for three extra-base hits including a first-inning Aaron Judge two-run blast. Gausman did strike out seven batters to represent the fourth time this season he's reached at least seven in an outing, but that's nothing more than a minor silver lining around Sunday's ugly performance. It's the fifth time this season Gausman has allowed at least five runs in a start, and he closes the month of June with a 5.64 ERA over 36.2 innings spanning six starts. His next start is tentatively slated for when the Blue Jays head west to take on the Mariners in Seattle next weekend. Rotowire.com Sunday, 2:57 pm
