  • Lucas Duda not in Mets lineup on Saturday
Lucas Duda is not in the Mets starting lineup on Saturday against the Phillies.

Advice: The Mets continue to take things easy with Duda since his return from the disabled list, giving him plenty of rest. James Loney will start in his place at first base and bat seventh against Phil Klein and the Phillies on Saturday. Rotoworld.com Today, 7:34 am
  • Brandon Belt reaches five times in win
Brandon Belt went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer, a double, a walk and a HBP to lead the Giants to a 9-3 win over the Dodgers on Friday.

Advice: Fortunately, Belt was able to stay in after getting hit in the hand in the seventh. Belt, whose OBP too often has gone to waste in the bottom half of the Giants order, hit second for the fifth time tonight. He has a .520 OBP, five runs scored and five RBI in those five games. • Holliday slugs homer in possible goodbye
Matt Holliday (thumb) slugged a dramatic pinch-hit homer in his return from the disabled list Friday against the Pirates.

Advice: Now that’s a moment. Holliday, who broke his left thumb back on August 11, was activated from the disabled list on Friday so he could make one last appearance for the fans in St. Louis. He was greeted with a standing ovation in the seventh inning before swatting an opposite-field blast off Zach Phillips. Oddly, this was the first pinch-hit homer of his career. The Cardinals have already informed Holliday that they don’t plan to pick up the $17 million option on his contract for 2017, so this was likely goodbye. You couldn’t have drawn it up much better. • Moss slugs two-run homer vs. Pirates
Brandon Moss slugged a two-run homer against the Pirates on Friday.

Advice: Moss is now up to 28 homers on the year, though it has been quite a struggle for him over the past month. Coming into Friday’s action, he was hitting .074 (7-for-95) over his previous 28 games. He was hitting .270 as recently as August 26, but he’s now sitting at .225 on the year. • Gyorko socks his 29th homer Friday
Jedd Gyorko socked a solo homer and drew a walk in Friday’s win over the Pirates.

Advice: Gyorko was acquired from the Padres over the winter to serve in a utility infielder role this season, but he leads the Cardinals with 29 homers. 22 of them have come in the second half. Only Brian Dozier has hit more homers in that time. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 9:57 pm

  • Chris Carter slugs home run No. 40
Chris Carter slugged his 40th homer of the season — a solo shot — Friday versus the Rockies.

Advice: It’s the eighth 40-homer season in franchise history. Carter finished the night 2-for-4 and has amassed 10 homers and 22 RBI in September. He's spending the final weekend of the season at Coors Field, so a showdown with Nolan Arenado for the home run lead in the NL could very well be in the cards. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 8:13 pm
  • Teixeira drives in Yanks' lone run in loss
Mark Teixeira drove in the Yankees’ lone run of the game with a sacrifice fly Friday against the Orioles.

Advice: Teixeira brought the Yankees within one run in the fourth inning before being replaced by Tyler Austin at first base to begin the fifth inning. It was a bit odd considering he’s going into the final weekend of his career. According to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, Teixera packed up his stuff and went to the clubhouse after he was pulled from the game. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 7:46 pm
  • Danny Valencia scratched with neck issue
Danny Valencia (neck) was scratched from the Athletics starting lineup on Friday.

Advice: The issue is believed to be minor, but there's no real reason to push him at this point. Matt Olson will take his place in the lineup and bat ninth against Taijuan Walker and the Mariners on Friday. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 4:44 pm

  • Logan Forsythe getting a day off on Friday
Logan Forsythe is absent from the Rays starting lineup on Friday.

Advice: Manager Kevin Cash indicated that Forsythe has been pushing himself very hard lately and that it's just a regular day of rest. Expect to see him back in there for the final two games of the season this weekend. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 3:38 pm
  • Matt Holliday activated from disabled list
Cardinals activated OF Matt Holliday from the 15-day disabled list.

Advice: He's not going to play much in the final weekend, though, as the Cards just want to get him a token appearance so that the impending free agent can be recognized by the fans. General manager John Mozeliak said Friday that the likelihood of the team picking up Holliday's option for 2017 is "very low." Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 2:24 pm

  • Cards expected to activate Holliday (thumb)
Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals "are ready to activate" Matt Holliday (thumb).

Advice: It's a change in course, as just a couple days ago Goold reported that Holliday returning was unlikely. However, Goold cautions that it's "hard to tell what role (if any)" Holliday will have in the final weekend. It could just be an opportunity for him to get a token plate appearance or two in order to be recognized by the fans since he's an impending free agent. Holliday has missed the last seven weeks with a fractured thumb. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 1:53 pm

  • Wilmer Flores (wrist) to swing bat Friday
Wilmer Flores (wrist) will attempt to swing a bat Friday.

Advice: It's been 20 days since Flores hurt his left wrist and four days since his last (unsuccessfully) tried to swing a bat. This looks like a last-ditch effort from Flores in hopes of being available for a potential Wild Card Game. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 1:23 pm

  • Pedro Alvarez sitting out on Friday
Pedro Alvarez is not in the Orioles' lineup Friday.

Advice: It's a rare non-start for Alvarez against a righty. The Orioles are going with Michael Bourn in right field and Mark Trumbo in the designated hitter spot. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 1:06 pm
  • Report: Cards won't pick up Holliday's option
Jon Heyman of TodaysKnuckleball.com reports that the Cardinals do not plan to exercise Matt Holliday's $17 million option for 2017.

Advice: He also adds that they won't extend him a similarly priced qualifying offer, either. Holliday, who will turn 37 over the winter, has had a career-worst season at the plate, batting .242/.318/.450 with 19 homers over 424 plate appearances. He's missed the last seven weeks with a fractured thumb. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 6:27 am

  • Vargas homers in second straight, Twins win
Kennys Vargas went 2-for-5 with a solo home run to help the Twins hold off the Royals 7-6 on Thursday.

Advice: Vargas took Royals starter Danny Duffy yard for the solo blast in the sixth inning. He also doubled off the southpaw in the contest. Vargas has now homered in two straight games and has 10 dingers in 44 games overall. He's batted .250/.354/.543 in those 44 games. Rotoworld.com Thursday, 10:10 pm
  • Gyorko belts 28th home run in win over Reds
Jedd Gyorko hit his 28th homer of the season in Thursday's win over the Reds.

Advice: Gyorko connected with a Dan Straily pitch in the second inning for the solo dong, his only hit in four at-bats. The hit was just his second in his last 20 at-bats, as the 28-year-old has fallen into a bit of a slump as the season draws to a close. Even so, it will go down as a career year for Gyorko, who is hitting .238/.300/.482 with those 28 homers, 56 RBI and 54 runs scored in 125 games. Rotoworld.com Thursday, 9:03 pm

  • Kim has RBI single, two hits in win over Jays
Hyun Soo Kim went 2-for-4 with an RBI single in Thursday's win over the Blue Jays.

Advice: Kim added to the Orioles' lead with an RBI knock in the seventh inning. The 28-year-old has put together an impressive first season in the majors -- one that might not have happened if the O's had their way in spring -- batting .307/.385/.429 with six homers, 22 RBI and 35 runs scored. At $4.2 million next year, the club should enter camp with designs on Kim occupying left field next year. Rotoworld.com Thursday, 7:12 pm

  • Jesus Montero suspended 50 games for PEDs
Jesus Montero has been suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball for testing positive for dimethylbutylamine.

Advice: Montero has spent all of 2016 at Triple-A in the Blue Jays' organization, batting .317/.349/.438 with 11 homers. The former top prospect will turn 27 in November and his future in the majors is now looking as cloudy as ever. Rotoworld.com Thursday, 2:02 pm

  • Teixeira launches walkoff grand slam vs. Sox
Mark Teixeira hit a walkoff grand slam Wednesday off Joe Kelly as the Yankees beat the Red Sox 5-3.

Advice: It didn't stop the Red Sox from clinching the AL East, but it surely felt good for Teixeira, who will wrap up his career in four days unless the Yankees pull off a miracle and advance. With homers in consecutive games, Teixeira has upped his OPS to .660, his highest mark since early May. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 10:37 pm
  • Vargas cranks two-run homer on Wednesday
Kennys Vargas went 1-for-4 and hit a two-run homer in Wednesday's loss to the Royals.

Advice: The sixth-inning blast with Miguel Sano aboard tied the game but the Twins would not score again. Vargas spent most of the season in the minors. He has gotten to play only sparingly in the majors although he has performed quite well when given the chance. He is batting .244/.352/.519 with nine longballs and 19 RBI in just 135 at-bats. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 8:38 pm
  • Lucas Duda scratch only due to workload
Mets manager Terry Collins said that Lucas Duda was scratched from Wednesday's lineup merely to give him a breather.

Advice: Duda was a late scratch from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins, but there is no injury concern here. The Mets simply wanted to give the 30-year-old first baseman a little rest before they hurtle into the final handful of games in the 2016 regular season. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 8:05 pm
  • Kim hits go-ahead two-run bomb in ninth
Hyun Soo Kim launched a clutch pinch-hit two-run bomb to give the Orioles a ninth-inning lead as they went on to beat the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Advice: He hit it off Blue Jays relief ace Roberto Osuna. Kim hasn't gotten the playing time his owners were hoping for this season, but he's slashing .305/.382/.428 with six home runs and 21 RBI in 292 at-bats. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 7:50 pm

  • John Jaso hits for cycle as Pirates roll Cubs
John Jaso hit for the cycle in Wednesday's 8-4 win over the Cubs.

Advice: Jaso singled to lead off the third inning, socked a three-run home run in the fourth, notched an RBI double in the fifth and polished off his cycle with an RBI triple in the seventh. He finished the game 4-for-4 with five RBI at the dish. It was the first-ever cycle at PNC Park. For the season as a whole, Jaso is hitting .267/.348/.407 with seven homers and 40 RBI across 371 at-bats. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 7:39 pm

  • Lucas Duda a late scratch from Mets' lineup
Lucas Duda has been scratched from Wednesday's game against the Marlins.

Advice: Duda was originally in the lineup, but when the Mets took the field it was James Loney who trotted over to first base. An update on Duda's status should be coming soon. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 4:42 pm
  • Carter cranks 39th homer in loss to Rangers
Chris Carter went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's loss to the Rangers.

Advice: Carter lifted off against Rangers starter A.J. Griffin the first inning for the two-run blast. He's now just one homer shy of 40, and his 39 homers, 92 RBI and 81 runs scored are all personal bests for the 29-year-old. In the National League, only Nolan Arenado has more homers than Carter with a handful of games left to play. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 9:00 pm
  • Duda collects three RBI in win over Marlins
Lucas Duda went 2-for-3 with three RBI in a win over the Marlins on Tuesday.

Advice: Duda came up with the sacks jacked in the eighth inning and he unloaded them with a three-run double. The multi-hit game was Duda's first since coming off the disabled list on September 17. Injuries derailed his season and limited him to 45 games. When healthy, the 30-year-old has hit .241/.317/.434 with seven homers and 23 RBI. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 7:47 pm
  • Holliday (thumb) doubtful to return this year
Matt Holliday (thumb) is doubtful to return to the Cardinals' active roster this year.

Advice: Holliday was aiming to take live batting practice over the weekend, but it didn't happen. The veteran outfielder is apparently still dealing with some discomfort and strength issues surrounding his surgically-repaired right thumb. St. Louis has an interesting decision to make this winter with Holliday holding a $17 million club option for 2017. He posted a career-low .768 OPS with 19 homers and 60 RBI in 107 games this season and will turn 37 years old in January. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 2:19 pm

  • Wilmer Flores felt more wrist pain Monday
Wilmer Flores felt lingering pain in his wrist while trying to swing a bat on Monday.

Advice: He'll be shut down for another couple days and could very well be done for the year, unless the Mets can muster a deep postseason run. Flores hasn't appeared in a major league game since September 10 due to a bone bruise in his left wrist. He was slashing .267/.319/.469 with 16 homers and 49 RBI in 307 at-bats. • Duda starting at first base Tuesday
Lucas Duda will start at first base Tuesday against the Marlins.

Advice: This will be his fourth start since returning from the disabled list. James Loney is on the bench and figures to lose some starts against righties this week as the Mets try to get some more punch in their lineup. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 12:38 pm
  • Mark Teixeira rips game-tying homer
Mark Teixeira smacked a game-tying solo home run in Monday's comeback win over the Blue Jays.

Advice: The Jays called upon Jason Grilli to close it out with Roberto Usuna unavailable, and Teixeira drilled one over the right-field wall with one out to knot things up. After a Didi Gregorius single, Aaron Hicks then delivered a go-ahead blast. Teixeira now has 14 homers over 378 at-bats in his farewell season. Rotoworld.com Monday, 7:38 pm

  • Forsythe hits 20-homer plateau for first time
Logan Forsythe hit his 20th home run of the season in Saturday's loss to the Red Sox.

Advice: He got there in legitimate fashion, taking all-everything closer Craig Kimbrel deep for a solo shot in the ninth inning. It's the first time in Forsythe's career that he's hit 20 homers in a season. The 29-year-old is batting .274/.344/.464 with 52 RBI, 75 runs scored and six steals to date. Rotoworld.com Saturday, 7:40 pm
  • Holliday scratched from another BP session
Matt Holliday (thumb) will not take batting practice this weekend.

Advice: He's going to meet with a specialist and hopefully try again Monday. Holliday has encountered numerous setbacks in his recovery from thumb surgery and is running out of time to make his return with only a week left in the regular season. The 36-year-old hasn't played since August 11. Rotoworld.com Saturday, 3:28 pm

  • Flores (wrist) could be done for the year
ESPN New York's Adam Rubin reports Wilmer Flores (wrist) may be done for the season.

Advice: He isn't close to swinging a bat and has already received two cortisone shots since going down with a bruised wrist two weeks ago. Flores could return if the Mets make a deep postseason run but it's a near certainty he won't be back for the final week of the regular season. Assuming that's the case, Flores will close out the 2016 campaign with 16 HR, 49 RBI and a .267 average across 307 at-bats. Rotoworld.com Saturday, 1:46 pm

  • Mark Teixeira not in Yankees lineup Saturday
Mark Teixeira is not in the Yankees starting lineup for Saturday's showdown against the Blue Jays.

Advice: Yankees skipper Joe Girardi continues to mix and match as the Bombers fight for a wild card berth. Tyler Austin is making a rare start in his place and will bat eighth against Marcus Stroman and the Blue Jays. Rotoworld.com Saturday, 10:18 am
  • Duda doubles in win over Phillies
Lucas Duda went 1-for-3 with a double against the Phillies on Friday.

Advice: Mets manager Terry Collins went with Duda on Friday after watching him almost hit a game-winning homer in Thursday’s game. He’s being thrown into the fire, but it looks like he’s getting his timing back at the plate. James Loney has been handling first base duties since the end of May, but that time could be coming to an end. Rotoworld.com Friday, 8:14 pm
  • Matt Holliday (thumb) to take live BP again
Matt Holliday (thumb) will take live batting practice again this weekend before being activated from the disabled list.

Advice: Holliday took live BP on Friday with no issues but the Cardinals want to see him do it once more before they return him to the active roster. It's unclear whether Holliday would be ready for regular at-bats right away upon activation. He's been out since early August with a fractured right thumb. Rotoworld.com Friday, 9:58 am

  • Matt Holliday (thumb) takes live BP
Matt Holliday (thumb) took live batting practice Friday at Wrigley Field.

Advice: Holliday was scratched from a simulated game last Saturday due to swelling in his surgically-repaired right thumb, but he resumed live hitting earlier this week. It seems likely that he's not going to be 100 percent at any point the rest of the way, but the Cardinals could wind up activating him, anyway, even it's to be used in a secondary role. • Wilmer Flores (wrist) won't play on Thursday
Mets manager Terry Collins has ruled out Wilmer Flores (wrist) for Thursday's game against the Phillies.

Advice: Collins deemed the worry-level surrounding Flores' wrist as a "DEFCON 4," so that is somewhat disconcerting. The team had hoped that the 25-year-old infielder would be able to return to the lineup against Phillies southpaw Adam Morgan on Thursday. Flores is currently sidelined by a left wrist injury suffered in a collision at home plate on September 10. He has been given two cortisone shots in the intervening days, but Collins said Flores has not been able to swing a bat since the collision. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 1:26 pm

  • Brandon Belt socks solo home run in ninth
Brandon Belt went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's win over the Dodgers.

Advice: Belt socked a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to provide the Giants a cushion in what had been a 1-0 affair. The homer was his 16th of the season. In addition, Belt has worked to a .271/.388/.465 triple-slash with 76 RBI over 505 at-bats. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 11:08 pm
  • Danny Valencia strikes out twice in defeat
Danny Valencia went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Tuesday's 10-inning loss to the Astros.

Advice: Valencia could not find a hit on the evening, a common theme for the A's. As a team, they managed just a trio of singles over 10 innings. For the season as a whole, Valencia is slashing .287/.348/.455 with 17 homers and 51 RBI over 442 at-bats. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 10:15 pm

The homer was Gyorko's 27th of the year, continuing to up his single-season record, and he's got 54 RBI and 53 runs scored to go with a .246/.309/.495 line. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 9:44 pm
