  • Bell expected to see time between 1B/OF
The Pirates expect Josh Bell to be ready for infield and outfield duties when he reports to spring training.

Advice: Bell, 24, hit .273/.368/.406 with three homers and 19 RBI over 152 plate appearances as a rookie this year while splitting time between first base and right field. The Pirates could end up trading an outfielder and John Jaso is also being prepped to play other positions, but Bell plans to be ready for all possible outcomes. "That's going to be my main focus, making sure I'm more versatile next year," said Bell. "You have a few guys in every lineup that can play all over the field. Those guys are your most valuable players. I hope to be one of those guys next year." Wednesday, 10:23 am

  • Braves re-sign Blake Lalli to minors deal
Braves re-signed C/INF Blake Lalli to a minor league contract.

Advice: Lalli was outrighted off the Braves' 40-man roster last week but will remain with the organization. He's logged just 52 at-bats at the major league level in his career, and just 13 at-bats since 2013. The 33-year-old is nothing more than organizational depth. Tuesday, 1:03 pm

  • Tigers would consider Avila's return
Tigers general manager Al Avila said Tuesday that he would consider his son, Alex Avila, as the club looks for a backup catcher this winter.

Advice: The Tigers were set behind the plate last offseason, so Avila left for a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the White Sox. The 29-year-old appeared in 57 games this season while batting .213 with seven homers and a .732 OPS in 209 plate appearances. Avila was originally drafted by the Tigers back in 2008 and spent the first seven seasons of his career with the club. James McCann is now the primary catcher in Detroit. Tuesday, 10:50 am

  • Jaso to work out at third base and outfield
John Jaso is expected to work out at third base this offseason.

Advice: He'll also try his hand at outfield. Jaso began his career at catcher before pivoting to first base in 2016. He had some success at first but top prospect Josh Bell could be ready to play there full-time next season. Jaso would have a clearer path to playing time in the outfield. Jung Ho Kang and David Freese split time at third last season and are still on the roster. Oct 15, 5:53 pm

The switch-hitting Smoak struck out in his lone plate appearances during the ALDS and batted .217/.314/.391 with 14 homers over 126 games during the regular season. Oct 15, 12:14 pm
