  • Pedro Alvarez not in Sunday's lineup
Pedro Alvarez is not in the Orioles' lineup Sunday.

Advice: Alvarez has been benched in three of the last four games, and all three times the opponent has had a righty on the mound. The O's are going with Mark Trumbo as their designated hitter and Hyun-soo Kim and Nolan Reimold in left and right field, respectively. 33 minutes ago
  • Matt Adams (back) returns to Cards' lineup
Matt Adams (back) is back in the Cardinals' lineup Sunday.

Advice: Adams didn't start the last two games due to a back issue, although he delivered a pinch-hit, two-run double Saturday. He's batting .393/.443/.696 with four homers and 17 RBI this month. 52 minutes ago
  • Hyun-soo Kim makes fourth straight start
Hyun-soo Kim made his fourth straight start in left field Saturday.

Advice: Rule 5 pick Joey Rickard has struggled of late, which has finally led to Kim getting an extended look. The 28-year-old has been terrific when given a chance this season, batting .386/.460/.455 across 50 plate appearances. He should continue to see regular at-bats if he keeps producing. "I just think he kind of brings some things we kind of need, some selectivity and kind of slow things down here and there," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "First of all, the guy’s going to have to get below .400 before you take him out. I’m not stupid. I don’t care how many at-bats or what kind of hits they are. At some point you go, ‘OK, let’s see.’ Like I told you, nobody really knows who he is or how good he can be." Today, 6:29 am
  • Matt Adams (back) gets pinch-hit double
Matt Adams (back) knocked a pinch-hit, two-run double in Saturday's win over the Nationals.

Advice: Adams hasn't started the last couple days due to a minor back issue, but he's fine. He could be in the lineup Sunday. Today, 5:25 am
  • Mets acquire James Loney from Padres for cash
Mets acquired 1B James Loney from the Padres for cash considerations.

Advice: Loney is expected to platoon at first base with Wilmer Flores. As the strong side of the platoon, he should see enough at-bats to be relevant in NL-only formats, though even at his peak he was never much of a mixed league commodity. He was hitting well at Triple-A El Paso though, slashing .342/.373/.424 with a pair of homers and 28 RBI. Yesterday, 11:49 am

  • Mark Teixeira unlikely to return on Sunday
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Saturday that he doesn't expect Mark Teixeira (neck) to return on Sunday.

Advice: While he won't be ready on Sunday, Teixeira is inching close to a return and could rejoin the Bombers lineup on Monday. He has been sidelined since experiencing renewed discomfort in his neck on Wednesday. Yesterday, 11:47 am

  • Mets acquire James Loney from Padres
Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports that the Mets have acquired James Loney from the Padres.

Advice: No word yet on the return, but it isn't expected to be much. With Lucas Duda sidelined and a gaping hole offensively at first base, Loney will have the chance to step right in as the club's everyday first baseman. The 32-year-old was hitting .342/.373/.424 with two homers and 28 RBI in 158 at-bats at Triple-A El Paso. Yesterday, 11:18 am

  • Tommy Joseph not in Phillies lineup Saturday
Tommy Joseph is not in the Phillies starting lineup on Saturday.

Advice: He's inexplicably on the pine while the slumping Ryan Howard starts at first base and hits cleanup. Joseph is hitting .290/.294/.516 with two homers and four RBI in his first 31 at-bats. Yesterday, 7:40 am
  • Yangervis Solarte homers twice in rout
Yangervis Solarte hit a pair of homers to knock in four runs against the Diamondbacks on Friday.

Advice: It's the second two-homer game of Solarte's career. The switch-hitter was batting cleanup tonight in his sixth game back from the disabled list. Still, it's probably not enough to make him of use in the typical mixed league. Friday, 10:27 pm
  • Derek Norris hits fifth homer in victory
Derek Norris went 2-for-3 with a homer, three RBI and two walks against the Diamondbacks on Friday.

Advice: The Padres need more from Norris, not just so that they can win some games, but also because they want him to drive up his trade value in advance of the deadline. He's hit .224 with four homers in May after finishing April with a .156 average and one homer. Friday, 10:25 pm
  • Joe Mauer hits fourth homer
Joe Mauer went 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and a walk against the Mariners on Friday.

Advice: Mauer seems to be finding his stroke again after a rough three weeks to open May. He's been a fine player overall this year, with his .281 average, .389 OBP and .401 slugging percentage. Still, with four homers, 15 runs scored and 15 RBI in 46 games, he hasn't been able to do much for his fantasy owners. Friday, 10:18 pm
  • Yonder Alonso goes hitless in loss
Yonder Alonso went 0-for-4 in the loss to the Tigers on Friday.

Advice: Alonso has picked it up some after a brutal April, but even so, he's still hitting a modest .254/.322/.324 with no homers in May. The A's might run out of patience and give Max Mundy an extended look soon. Friday, 9:58 pm
  • Napoli clubs ninth home run in loss on Friday
Mike Napoli clubbed his ninth home run of the season on Friday, but it wasn't enough to lead the Indians past the visiting Orioles.

Advice: Napoli tagged O's starter Mike Wright with a solo shot in the fourth inning, pulling the Tribe to within a run at 3-2. He finished the night 1-for-3 plus a walk and is now hitting .232/.304/.463 with nine long balls and 31 RBI on the season. Friday, 8:12 pm

  • Pearce homers in loss to Yankees
Steve Pearce went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in Friday’s loss to the Yankees.

Advice: His ninth-inning blast against Kirby Yates was the only offense of the night for the Rays. Pearce has taken advantage of regular playing time this month by slugging seven home runs. He’s now batting .297/.388/.550 overall. His one-year, $4.75 million deal looks like one of the winter’s best bargains. Friday, 7:24 pm

  • Espinosa homers in second straight game
Danny Espinosa socked a solo homer in Friday’s loss to the Cardinals.

Advice: Espinosa has now homered in back-to-back games. It’s nice to see him finally pick things up, but it’s likely just a matter of time before top prospect Trea Turner takes over at shortstop. Even with the power over the past two days, Espinosa is batting just .203/.299/.320 over 48 games. Fortunately, he has provided value with his defense. Friday, 6:56 pm

  • John Jaso getting a breather Friday
John Jaso is absent from the Pirates' lineup Friday.

Advice: He's getting a day off with the Rangers throwing lefty Cole Hamels. Sean Rodriguez is at first base. Friday, 1:32 pm

  • Pedro Alvarez not in Friday's lineup
Pedro Alvarez is not in the Orioles' lineup Friday.

Advice: It's the second time in five games he's been on the bench even with a righty on the mound. Alvarez has just three hits in his last 24 at-bats and is down to .192/.296/.343 for the season. The Orioles are going with Hyun-soo Kim in left field, Nolan Reimold in right and Mark Trumbo in the designated hitter spot. Friday, 1:21 pm
  • Matt Adams (back) not in Friday's lineup
Matt Adams (back) is not in the Cardinals' lineup Friday.

Advice: Adams departed Thursday's game with mid-back stiffness. The good news is he expects to be available to pinch-hit. Brandon Moss is handling first base Friday. Friday, 11:40 am
  • Espinosa's homer leads Nationals past Cards
Danny Espinosa hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to lead the Nationals to a 2-1 win over the Cardinals on Thursday.

Advice: Espinosa's homer off Mike Leake broke a 1-1 tie and ended up being the difference. He finished 1-for-3 in the game. Despite Thursday's contribution, the 29-year-old is hitting just .201/.301/.302 in 47 games and appears to be keeping the seat warm for Trea Turner, who could be called up in a matter of weeks. • Matt Adams leaves with mid-back stiffness
Matt Adams left Thursday's game against the Nationals with mid-back stiffness.

Advice: He went 1-for-2 with a single before exiting in the fifth inning. Brandon Moss, who began the game in left field, has moved to first base. Randal Grichuk came into play center field with Jeremy Hazelbaker moving from center to left. Adams will be reevaluated on Friday. Consider him day-to-day. Thursday, 6:04 pm
  • Chris Johnson knocks in three against Rays
Chris Johnson had a two-run homer and an RBI single against the Rays on Thursday.

Advice: The homer was his second of the year. Johnson is hitting .226 with six RBI in 61 at-bats while primarily starting against left-handers this year. He needs to pick it up to be of use in that role. Thursday, 1:15 pm
  • Mark Teixeira (neck) receives cortisone shot
Mark Teixeira received a cortisone injection for his sore neck on Thursday.

Advice: He's expected to miss the next three games, including Thursday afternoon's series finale against the Blue Jays. Teixeira began experiencing renewed discomfort in his neck on Wednesday, but an MRI ruled out anything serious. He should back in action Sunday if the cortisone has the intended effect. Thursday, 11:04 am

  • Hyun-Soo Kim reaches four times
Hyun-soo Kim got a rare start over Joey Rickard on Wednesday and went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a walk against the Astros.

Advice: Ever since the season start, Kim has looked like the player the Orioles signed him to be. Maybe they should give him a real chance to show what he can do? He's 14-for-32 with three doubles, five walks and just two strikeouts in his very limited action. Wednesday, 8:13 pm
  • Mark Teixeira (neck) will have cortisone shot
Mark Teixeira is scheduled to receive a cortisone shot for his renewed neck discomfort.

Advice: Yankees manager Joe Girardi said the club is not considering placing Teixeira on the disabled list yet, but he's going to have to miss at least a couple more games while the cortisone takes effect. The veteran first baseman underwent an MRI on Wednesday afternoon, which apparently showed no major structural damage. He has been bothered by neck spasms for much of May. Wednesday, 7:29 pm

  • Yankees send Mark Teixeira (neck) for MRI
Mark Teixeira (neck) underwent an MRI on Wednesday.

Advice: The Yankees are still waiting on the results of the MRI. Neck spasms have bothered Teixeira on-and-off throughout the month of May. A stint on the disabled list is in play if the testing results are not to the team's liking. Teixeira is hitting just .195/.294/.282 over 149 at-bats this season. Wednesday, 3:36 pm
    10:10 am x @TB
  • Teixeira has neck flareup, sitting Wednesday
Mark Teixeira is out of the Yankees' starting lineup on Wednesday with renewed neck discomfort.

Advice: He has three homers in nine career at-bats against the Blue Jays' starter, Marco Estrada, so it's a big absence. Teixeira is considered day-to-day for now. Wednesday, 12:56 pm

  • Alvarez connects for third homer vs. Astros
Pedro Alvarez hit his third home run of the season Tuesday against the Astros.

Advice: Alvarez hit a solo homer off Astros starter Doug Fister in the fifth inning, his only hit in five at-bats. The blast was his first since May 8. Thought to be a potential fantasy sleeper heading into the season after signing with the Orioles in March, the 29-year-old has instead batted .191/.300/.351 with three homers and 10 RBI in 32 games. Tuesday, 10:04 pm
  • Napoli hits rare triple, has two RBI Tuesday
Mike Napoli went 2-for-4 with a two-run triple, a stolen base and a run scored against the White Sox on Tuesday.

Advice: Napoli, not the fleetest of foot, ripped one into the gap in the third inning, and he still required Austin Jackson to flat out miss the ball, Melky Cabrera to kick it around and Tyler Saladino to drop the relay just to make it safely into third base. He was obviously feeling pretty good about himself, because Napoli then proceeded to steal his first base of the season in the ninth inning. He's better known for his run production, which he's done well this season, mashing eight homers with 30 RBI and 26 runs scored in 40 games. Tuesday, 8:23 pm

  • Report: Loney's reps plan to contact Mets
Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that James Loney's representatives plan to contact the Mets to gauge interest.

Advice: Lucas Duda is out indefinitely with a stress fracture in his back, so it could be a natural fit. Sherman hears that the Mets at least have "some curiosity" about the possibility. Loney, 32, is batting .333/.368/.417 with two home runs and 23 RBI over 39 games with the Padres' Triple-A affiliate. He has the ability to opt of his minor league deal if he finds an opportunity in the majors. Tuesday, 8:57 am

  • Joe Mauer homers as part of three-hit night
Joe Mauer went 3-for-5 with a solo homer in Monday's loss to the Royals.

Advice: The longball came in the first inning off of Ian Kennedy and was Mauer's third of the season. The power has still been lacking for Mauer, and he's cooled off in May after a nice April. However, he's still been productive overall with a .380 on-base percentage. Monday, 9:28 pm
  • Tommy Joseph homers in Phillies' loss
Tommy Joseph doubled and ripped a solo homer in Monday's loss to the Tigers.

Advice: Joseph's dinger in the sixth inning tied the game before the Tigers went back ahead for good the next inning. Ryan Howard went 0-for-4 with a couple strikeouts in the same game, and you've got to wonder how long it will be before the Phillies give Joseph a shot as their everyday first baseman. Monday, 7:32 pm
  • Napoli homers, drives in two runs Monday
Mike Napoli socked a solo homer, drew a walk, and knocked in two runs Monday against the White Sox.

Advice: Giancarlo Stanton’s struggles have been getting most of the attention recently, but Napoli was 0-for-19 with 11 strikeouts over his previous four games. The 34-year-old is now up to eight home runs and 28 RBI on the year, though he’s batting just .222 with a .292 on-base percentage. At the pace he’s whiffing, we don’t see the batting average going up. Monday, 5:48 pm

  • Solarte walks for walk-off in 11-inning win
Yangervis Solarte ended Saturday's 3-2, 11-inning win over the Dodgers by drawing a bases-loaded walk.

Advice: Yes, the classic walk-off walk. Dodgers reliever Chin-Hui Tsao had himself a rough one, walking three after allowing a lead-off single to Wil Meyers to open the bottom of the eleventh. Perhaps a reason for his nervousness around the strike zone: Melvin Upton Jr. almost ended the game with a would-be home run that died on the warning track with one out in the frame. Regardless, Solarte eventually drew the walk to end the game. He probably feels pretty great with this one. He hasn't played since early April, having been done in by a strained hamstring. Last season, the 28-year-old infielder slashed .270/.320/.428 with 33 doubles, four triples, 14 homers and 63 RBI over 526 at-bats. Those in deeper mixed- or NL-only formats, particularly those in need of infield help, should consider scooping Solarte off waivers if he is not already owned. May 21, 11:13 pm
  • Yangervis Solarte activated from 15-day DL
Padres activated 3B Yangervis Solarte from the 15-day disabled list.

Advice: He missed almost six weeks with a strained hamstring. Solarte isn't starting against the Dodgers on Saturday but he'll be available off the bench. Manager Andy Green said he wants to keep Brett Wallace's bat in the lineup. With Wallace locked in at the hot corner, Solarte might start seeing time at second base. May 21, 5:14 pm
  • Adams homers and scores three runs in victory
Matt Adams went 2-for-4 with a home run and three runs scored in a win over the Diamondbacks on Saturday.

Advice: Adams drew the start at first base with lefty Robbie Ray on the mound, a sign that he's gained the trust of manager Mike Matheny, and he responded with the three-run effort. The homer came after Ray had exited, Adams' fourth dinger of the season. The big first baseman has used a strong month of May to raise his overall line to .291/.344/.477 with 17 RBI and 11 runs scored. May 21, 4:04 pm
  • Joe Mauer not in Twins lineup on Saturday
Joe Mauer is not in the Twins starting lineup for Saturday's contest against the Blue Jays.

Advice: Manager Paul Molitor is opting to give Mauer a breather against opposing southpaw J.A. Happ. The 33-year-old is hitting .265/.377/.361 with two homers and 11 RBI through his first 41 games. May 21, 8:24 am
  • Adams collects four RBI in win over Rockies
Matt Adams went 2-for-3 with four RBI in Thursday's win over the Rockies.

Advice: Adams stepped to the plate with runners in scoring position in both the first and fourth innings, and he came through both times, twice knocking two-run singles as part of a 13-run barrage. The big first baseman continues to punish right-handed pitching as he's now got three homers and 13 RBI against righties as opposed to zero homers and three RBI against southpaws. Adams should continue to be deployed against right-handers, and he owns a .275/.333/.425 line overall. May 19, 9:36 pm
  • Jaso triples among three hits, scores twice
John Jaso went 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored Thursday against the Braves.

Advice: Jaso's triple, his second of the season, actually came with nobody on base, as he collected his RBI on a sixth-inning single. The three-hit game was his second in three nights, getting his average back up over the .300 mark. The first baseman is batting .301/.369/.459 through 36 games this year. May 19, 9:00 pm

  • Mike Napoli not in Thursday's starting lineup
Mike Napoli is not in the Indians' lineup Thursday against the Reds.

Advice: It's Napoli's first day off since May 1. He's swung a hot bat recently, raising his average from .225 to .241 over his last nine games. Carlos Santana will fill in at first base and hit cleanup on Thursday night. May 19, 1:27 pm

  • Mark Teixeira goes 0-for-5 against Arizona
Mark Teixeira went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Teixeira wasn't supposed to be one of the Yankees' problems this year after his outstanding 2015, but here he is with a .203 average and about four times as many strikeouts (41) as RBI (11) in 133 at-bats. He's a big reason the team is struggling so mightily when it comes to scoring runs, and the Yankees should think about giving him some bench time after Alex Rodriguez returns. May 18, 10:12 pm
