  • Peralta drives home lone run in loss to Cubs
Jhonny Peralta went 1-for-4 and plated the Cardinals' lone run in Sunday night's loss to the Cubs.

Advice: His run-scoring single in the eighth inning got the Cardinals on the board, cutting their deficit in half at 2-1. That would be the extent of their offense though. It has been a disappointing and injury-plagued season for the veteran infielder who is now hitting .251/.298/.395 with seven homers and 25 RBI in his 75 games. 23 minutes ago
  • Brandon McCarthy pitches well in no-decision
Brandon McCarthy pitched well in a no-decision against the Rockies on Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits over his 5 1/3 innings.

Advice: The veteran right-hander punched out six on the afternoon and walked just one. It was a nice return to the rotation for McCarthy, who was thrust into emergency duty when the club pushed Rich Hill's next start back. He could stick in the rotation to make another start next week, and would be worth a look as a streaming option in that case. Today, 5:19 pm
  • Tyler Anderson logs quality start on Sunday
Tyler Anderson logged a quality start in a no-decision against the Dodgers on Sunday, surrendering two runs on 10 hits over 6 1/3 innings.

Advice: The left-hander walked two and struck out only one batter on the afternoon. The Dodgers scratched out a run against him in the third inning and then tied the score with Corey Seager's RBI triple in the seventh. Anderson has done a really nice job in the Rockies rotation this season, compiling a 3.54 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and a 99/28 K/BB ratio over 114 1/3 innings. He'll wrap up his season on Saturday against the Brewers. Today, 5:12 pm
  • Ryon Healy leaves the yard again in victory
Ryon Healy clobbered another home run on Sunday as the Athletics routed the Rangers 7-1 in Oakland.

Advice: All of the damage came during a seven-run uprising in the second inning, which Healy capped off with a two-run homer to chase Colby Lewis from the game. He has really opened some eyes during his time with the big league club, slashing .303/.336/.519 with 12 homers and 33 RBI in 241 at-bats. He has likely played his way into a role as the club's starting third baseman heading into 2017. Today, 3:40 pm
    W, 7-1 vs Tex
  • Cotton fans five over seven strong versus TEX
Jharel Cotton earned his second victory of the season on Sunday, firing seven impressive innings of one-run baseball against the Rangers.

Advice: Cotton punched out five on the afternoon and didn't issue a free pass. The only blemish on his day was a solo homer off the bat of Adrian Beltre in the seventh inning. The rookie right-hander has been tremendous in his limited time with the A's, compiling a 1.44 ERA, 0.68 WHIP and 16/3 K/BB ratio over 25 innings. He's worth a look in all formats for his final start of the season on Saturday against the Mariners in Seattle. Today, 3:40 pm
    W, 7-1 vs Tex
  • Boyd fails to record out in loss to Royals
Matt Boyd failed to record an out Sunday in the Tigers' loss to the Royals.

Advice: Boyd gave up four runs on two singles, a double, a triple, and a homer in a nightmare of a first inning. This after he worked eight innings Tuesday against the Twins. The young lefty may have hit a wall here in late September. Today, 2:14 pm
    L, 12-9 vs KC
  • Musgrove cruises over seven against Angels
Joe Musgrove was excellent on Sunday afternoon in Houston, allowing just one run over seven innings in the Astros' 4-1 victory over the Angels.

Advice: The one run he gave up came on an RBI single up the middle by Rafael Ortega in the top of the fourth inning. Musgrove struck out four, didn't walk a batter, and scattered seven hits. The rookie right-hander now holds a 4.06 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 55/16 K/BB ratio over 62 innings this year. He'll finish the regular season with a road start against this same Angels squad. Today, 1:48 pm
    W, 4-1 vs LAA
  • Jarred Cosart (elbow) undergoes MRI, X-ray
Jarred Cosart has undergone an MRI and X-ray on his right elbow.

Advice: Cosart exited Saturday's start versus the Giants with what the Padres think is a bone spur in the righty's elbow. He's almost surely done for the season. Cosart holds an ugly 6.00 ERA over 13 starts this season. Today, 12:18 pm
    W, 4-3 vs SF
  • Jordy Mercer (forearm) returns to lineup
Jordy Mercer (forearm) is back in the Pirates' lineup Sunday.

Advice: It's his first start since Wednesday as Mercer has battled a flexor issue in his right arm. He's at shortstop and batting sixth against A.J. Cole and the Nationals. Today, 10:10 am
  • Matt Wieters not in Sunday's lineup
Matt Wieters is absent from the Orioles' lineup Sunday.

Advice: He's just getting a breather. Caleb Joseph will do the catching. Today, 8:36 am
  • Jose Iglesias scratched from Tigers' lineup
Jose Iglesias was a late scratch from the Tigers' lineup Sunday.

Advice: Chris McCosky of the Detroit News says that Iglesias "was tore up pretty good" by the death of fellow Cuban Jose Fernandez and it appears that's the reason for him being scratched. Andrew Romine has replaced Iglesias at shortstop. Today, 7:40 am
  • Jose Iglesias (hand) back in action Saturday
Jose Iglesias (hand) singled and scored a run in five trips to the plate Saturday against the Royals.

Advice: Iglesias had to be lifted from Friday's game after an errant throw from third base hit his right hand as he crossed first base. However, he didn't wind up needing any additional down time as it turned out. Today, 5:23 am
  • Pagan goes 3-for-5 with an RBI, run and steal
Angel Pagan went 3-for-5 with an RBI, stole a base and scored a run in the Giants' extra-inning win on Saturday.

Advice: He drove in a run with a single in the first inning. He scored the go-ahead run in the 10th inning on a Kelby Tomlinson single. Pagan has a .273 batting average with 11 bombs, 51 RBI and 66 runs scored in 122 games this year. He has pitched in 14 stolen bases as well. He is a decent extra outfielder in fantasy leagues. Yesterday, 10:19 pm
  • Ruf has three hits, homer in win over Mets
Darin Ruf went 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's win over the Mets.

Advice: Ruf swatted a three-run bomb in the fourth inning as the Phillies hung 10 runs on the Mets in the victory. It was Ruf's second homer in as many games after going his first 37 games without one. Ineffectiveness and the emergence of Tommy Joseph have relegated Ruf to a reserve role, and the 30-year-old will need a big spring to earn a spot on the 2017 roster. Yesterday, 10:13 pm
    L, 17-0 @NYM
  • Asher earns win despite four unearned runs
Alec Asher allowed four runs -- all unearned -- over five innings in a win over the Mets on Saturday.

Advice: Two errors that contributed to a four-run fifth inning -- with the Phillies ahead 10-0 at that point -- marred Asher's final line, but he gave up just five hits without walking a batter in the victory. Asher has now allowed just four earned runs in four starts this year, posting a 1.66 ERA and 0.92 WHIP while going 2-0 in those starts. A rematch with the Mets on Friday looms in Asher's final start of 2016. Yesterday, 10:03 pm
  • Schebler collects three hits, two runs scored
Scott Schebler went 3-for-5 with two runs scored in a win over the Brewers on Saturday.

Advice: The outfielder had a double to go with two singles in the contest. The 25-year-old had a terrible start to the year, leading to his demotion in early May, but he's making up for it with a strong finish. Schebler is now hitting .320 in September with a homer, 11 RBI and 11 runs scored this month. He's batting .256/.322/.420 overall. Yesterday, 9:53 pm
  • Cosart exits with right elbow inflammation
Jarred Cosart (elbow) left Saturday's game against the Giants with right elbow inflammation.

Advice: He didn't look right from the start, allowing three hits, two walks and three earned runs before exiting with two outs in the first inning. Only 13 of his 28 pitches went for strikes. With only a week left in the regular season, it's likely that Cosart has thrown his final pitch of 2016. The right-hander is winless in 13 starts with a 6.04 ERA. Yesterday, 7:34 pm
    W, 4-3 vs SF
  • Dodgers activate Brandon McCarthy from DL
Dodgers activated RHP Brandon McCarthy from the 15-day disabled list.

Advice: McCarthy made it through a five-inning simulated game on Tuesday without any issues. It's unclear if he'll work out of the bullpen upon his return or if he'll have a shot to return to the starting rotation. Yesterday, 8:14 am
  • Jordy Mercer fouls out as pinch hitter
Jordy Mercer (forearm) fouled out as a pinch hitter during Friday's come-from-behind victory over the Nationals.

Advice: Mercer was scratched from Friday's lineup due to discomfort in his right forearm and was held out on Friday as well. The fact that he was able to appear as a pinch hitter bodes well for his status going forward and he should return to the starting lineup at some point over the weekend. Yesterday, 5:44 am
  • Iglesias day-to-day with hand contusion
Jose Iglesias has been diagnosed with a right hand contusion and is listed as day-to-day.

Advice: The defensive wizard was hit in the hand by an errant throw while running the bases in Friday's victory over the Royals. It wouldn't be surprising to see Andrew Romine start in his place on Saturday. Friday, 6:51 pm
  • Jose Iglesias leaves game with hand injury
Jose Iglesias was forced to leave Friday's game against the Royals after being hit on the hand by an errant throw.

Advice: Iglesias got drilled on the right hand by a wild throw from Cheslor Cuthbert as he crossed first base. He remained in the game to run for himself, but was replaced by Andrew Romine defensively the next half inning. Expect the Tigers to provide an update on his status after the conclusion of Friday's game. Friday, 6:42 pm
  • Jordy Mercer (forearm) scratched from lineup
Jordy Mercer was scratched from Thursday's lineup with right forearm discomfort.

Advice: It's unclear at this point whether it's something that could keep him out for more than just the one game. Sean Rodriguez will slide over from second base to shortstop for Mercer, while Adam Frazier has entered the lineup at second. Thursday, 2:30 pm
  • Joe Musgrove keeps A's in check into sixth
Joe Musgrove pitched well in Tuesday's no-decision against the A's, surrendering one run on two hits over 5 1/3 innings.

Advice: Musgrove's outing was only marred by a few control issues, as he walked three over his 5 1/3 innings of work. The lone run to score on his watch came home on an RBI ground out by Stephen Vogt in the sixth. Since being blasted by the Rangers on September 3, the 23-year-old right-hander has allowed just six runs over his last 17 innings (three starts). He will carry a 4.42 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 51/16 K/BB ratio (55 frames) into a home date with the Angels next time he takes the mound. Tuesday, 10:09 pm
    W, 4-1 vs LAA
  • Boyd delivers eight strong in win over Twins
Matt Boyd allowed a run on three hits over eight stout innings in the Tigers' 8-1 win over the Twins on Tuesday.

Advice: A Robbie Grossman solo homer in the seventh inning was the only damage Boyd allowed on the evening. The lefty was otherwise stellar, walking just one while striking out seven over his eight innings of work. It was a nice showing after he lasted just 3 2/3 innings his last time out. Boyd is now 6-4 with a 4.16 ERA in 97 1/3 innings on the year. He'll look to keep rolling Sunday against the Royals. Tuesday, 8:17 pm
    L, 12-9 vs KC
  • McCarthy (hip) throws simulated game
Brandon McCarthy (hip) threw a five-inning simulated game on Tuesday afternoon.

Advice: It lasted about 75 pitches. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he'll wait until Wednesday to see how McCarthy feels before revealing the next course of action for the rehabbing right-hander. McCarthy struggled badly with his control in August before landing back on the disabled list with a hip injury. He's been limited to eight MLB starts in 2016, largely due to his recovery from Tommy John elbow surgery. Tuesday, 4:46 pm
  • Jharel Cotton strong versus Astros
Jharel Cotton didn't factor into the decision after holding the Astros to one run in six innings Monday.

Advice: Many projected Cotton as a reliever when he was acquired from the Dodgers in the Rich Hill/Josh Riddick trade, but he's making a great case for a spot in next year's rotation. He's allowed a total of three earned runs in 18 innings in his three starts. He struck out six and walked none tonight. Monday, 10:14 pm
    W, 7-1 vs Tex
  • Tyler Anderson solid but takes loss
Tyler Anderson was charged with five runs -- two earned -- over seven innings in Monday's loss to the Cardinals.

Advice: A two-out error by Nolan Arenado in the fourth inning really hurt, as Anderson then yielded a two-run double to Carlos Martinez and RBI single to Matt Carpenter. The left-hander struck out seven and didn't walk anyone, as his final line looked quite good with three of the runs being unearned. Anderson will take on the Dodgers in L.A. this weekend. Monday, 8:52 pm
  • McCarthy to throw sim. game on Tuesday
Brandon McCarthy (elbow) will throw 75 pitches in a simulated game on Tuesday.

Advice: McCarthy struggled with his control in a three-start stretch with the Dodgers in August before landing on the DL with hip soreness. He was hit hard in a minor league rehab start from there, but there were positive reports coming out of a simulated game last week. The Dodgers haven't ruled him out from returning, but it's unclear what role he could have down the stretch or doing the postseason. Sep 19, 5:39 pm
  • Jarred Cosart hit hard in loss at Coors Field
Jarred Cosart was hit hard in a losing effort against the Rockies at Coors Field on Sunday, allowing five runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Advice: The right-hander walked four and struck out four in the ballgame. He navigated through the first three innings without any difficulty, but the Rockies broke through with five runs in the fourth to chase him, including a two-run homer by Mark Reynolds. Cosart will continue to take his turn in the rotation despite a very disappointing 5.63 ERA and 1.70 WHIP. He should be ignored for Saturday's start against the Giants. Sep 18, 4:32 pm
    W, 4-3 vs SF
  • Scott Schebler goes 3-for-4 against Pirates
Scott Schebler went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored Sunday against the Pirates.

Advice: With a .265 average and a .770 OPS in 219 at-bats, Schebler is making a decent case to open next season as the lefty portion of a platoon in one of the Reds' corner outfield spots. He doesn't have a whole lot of upside beyond this, though. Sep 18, 1:10 pm
  • O's and Wieters to discuss contract extension
Matt Wieters' agent Scott Boras will be in Baltimore on Monday to begin discussing a contract extension with the Orioles.

Advice: Boras believes that there is mutual interest in getting a deal done, with Wieters' preference to remain in Baltimore. Wieters could have hit free agency after the 2015 season, but the club offered him the one-year, $15.3 million qualifying offer. After a rebound season offensively, he'll land quite the lucrative multi-year deal this winter. Sep 16, 4:47 pm
  • Wieters has two RBI, scores twice versus Rays
Matt Wieters went 2-for-4 with a two-run single and two runs scored against the Rays on Thursday.

Advice: Wieters came through with the bases loaded in the first inning, plating two runs with a single off Rays starter Blake Snell. The All-Star also had a double in the game. Wieters has proven relatively durable this year, playing in 110 games for the first time since 2013, but his offense has been largely pedestrian. The 30-year-old is hitting .243/.299/.402 with 14 homers and 60 RBI overall. Sep 15, 8:37 pm
  • Healy homers among three hits against Royals
Ryon Healy went 3-for-5 with a three-run home run and two runs scored in Thursday's win over the Royals.

Advice: Healy demolished an Edinson Volquez offering in the third inning, parking it in the upper deck 472 feet away. The homer was his 10th in 56 games this year, and he's hit four in his last eight games. The 24-year-old has had an impressive debut, batting .309/.344/.525 overall. Sep 15, 8:04 pm
    W, 7-1 vs Tex
  • Mercer hits three-run homer in win over Phils
Jordy Mercer hit a three-run home run in Thursday's lopsided win over the Phillies.

Advice: Mercer hit one of the club's four jacks against Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoff on the evening, ending the right-hander's night with the thee-run shot. The homer was Mercer's 11th of the season, giving him 56 RBI. It will likely go down as a career year offensively for the 30-year-old, who's hitting .259/.331/.384 overall. Sep 15, 7:31 pm
  • Joe Musgrove goes 6 1/3 innings in victory
Joe Musgrove yielded three runs in 6 1/3 innings in a victory over the Rangers on Wednesday.

Advice: Musgrove struck out seven and walked two in helping the Astros to salvage at least the finale of the three-game series. The 23-year-old rookie still has a 4.71 ERA for the Astros, but his 47/13 K/BB ratio in 49 2/3 innings is pretty impressive. He'll be a nice play in mixed leagues next week, as he'll likely get to pitch in Oakland and at home against the Angels. Sep 14, 9:03 pm
    W, 4-1 vs LAA
