  • Beltre blasts three-run homer against Indians
Adrian Beltre hit a three-run home run in Thursday's win over the Indians.

Advice: Beltre connected with a Josh Tomlin pitch in the fifth inning for the three-run bomb, an inning in which the Rangers scored five runs. Beltre now has 22 homers and 83 RBI in 121 games. The ageless third baseman is batting .288/.342/.483 overall. Today, 9:09 pm
  • Chris Coghlan (rib) begins rehab stint in Iowa
Chris Coghlan (rib) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on Thursday.

Advice: He drew the start in left field on Thursday. Coghlan has been out since mid-August with a right rib contusion. There's a good chance he'll return from the disabled list as soon as he's eligible on September 1. Today, 6:13 pm
    15-Day DL
  • Matt Davidson (foot) ruled out for the year
Matt Davidson (foot) has been ruled out for the season.

Advice: Austin Jackson (knee) is also done for the year. Davidson was called up from the minors in July and broke his right foot in his first game with the big club. He logged one hit in his two at-bats for the White Sox this season. He should be fine for spring training. Today, 5:48 pm

  • Jefry Marte (personal) to return on Friday
Jefry Marte (personal) will join the Angels Friday in Detroit.

Advice: Marte missed the club's series against the Blue Jays while tending to a personal matter. The 25-year-old has been a jack of all trades this season, splitting time between left field and both corner infield spots. He's hit a little bit too with nine homers and 27 RBI over 176 at-bats for the Halos. Today, 3:05 pm

  • Seager (foot) held out for second straight game
Kyle Seager (foot) is not in the Mariners' lineup Thursday against the White Sox.

Advice: Seager is still out with a bruised foot he suffered Tuesday against the Yankees. Manager Scott Servais is hoping to have Seager back in the lineup on Friday but admitted it's 50-50. Utility man Shawn O'Malley will handle the hot corner in his absence on Thursday. Today, 2:10 pm

  • Miguel Sano doubles twice
The slumping Miguel Sano doubled twice and scored twice Thursday against the Tigers.

Advice: Sano had been in a 1-for-23 skid while dealing with elbow troubles of late. He was on a tear earlier this month when threatened with a minor league demotion. If the elbow is sound, his bat should return to life soon, maybe right now. Today, 1:50 pm
    L, 8-5 vs Det
  • Aaron Hill goes hitless in loss
Aaron Hill went 0-for-3 in the loss to the Rays on Thursday and is hitting .202/.268/.258 since joining the Red Sox on July 7.

Advice: The Red Sox bought in to Hill's fluky first half when they sent two prospects the Brewers way for his services, and they're living to regret it. He should be limited to starting against lefties the rest of the way; there's no excuse for having him in the lineup against a righty like Jake Odorizzi. Today, 1:05 pm
    L, 2-1 @TB
  • Red Sox recall Marco Hernandez from AAA
Red Sox recalled INF Marco Hernandez from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Advice: He'll provide depth for the Boston bench with Andrew Benintendi (knee, ankle) landing on the disabled list Thursday. Hernandez is 13-for-44 this year in the majors. Today, 8:21 am
  • Braves add Brandon Snyder from AAA level
Braves purchased the contract of 3B/1B Brandon Snyder from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Advice: Snyder was designated for assignment by Atlanta just a few weeks ago, but he's getting called back to fill the roster spot left vacant by Wednesday night's Jeff Francoeur trade. Snyder, 29, owns a poor .232/.272/.420 career batting line in 107 games at the MLB level. Today, 6:17 am
  • Gurriel (hamstring) lines out as pinch-hitter
Yulieski Gurriel (hamstring) lined out as a pinch-hitter on Wednesday against the Pirates.

Advice: Gurriel was held out of the Astros' starting lineup for the third straight game due to tightness in his right hamstring. It's something he came down with in his major league debut Sunday versus the Orioles. Gurriel should be ready to rock for the opening of a three-game weekend series Friday night against the Rays. Today, 5:55 am
  • Saladino (back) singles, steals base
Tyler Saladino (back) singled in three at-bats and stole a base on Wednesday.

Advice: Saladino had missed four straight games due to back soreness. It obviously wasn't anything too serious. He's hitting .258/.295/.385 with 10 steals in 70 games this season as a utilityman for the White Sox. Today, 5:51 am

  • Brock Holt (oblique) hitless in return Wed.
Brock Holt (oblique) went hitless in three at-bats Wednesday in his return to the Red Sox lineup.

Advice: It was the first game in five days for Holt, who has been battling oblique tightness. He might be looking at a bigger workload for the stretch run with starting left fielder Andrew Benintendi (knee, ankle) possibly done for the season. Chris Young will also draw starts in left, but he struggles against right-handed pitching. Today, 5:45 am

  • Jake Lamb goes 3-for-6, homers
Jake Lamb went 3-for-6 with a homer and scored the winning run in the 11th as the Diamondbacks edged the Braves 10-9 on Wednesday.

Advice: Lamb doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored the winning run on Brandon Drury's sac fly. The homer in the fifth inning was his 25th of the year. He has five hits the last two days to snap out of an ugly 2-for-46 slump. Yesterday, 11:37 pm
    L, 3-1 vs Atl
  • Justin Turner hits 24th homer
Justin Turner went 2-for-3 and homered to account for the only run in the Dodgers' win over the Giants on Wednesday.

Advice: Turner is up to 24 homers in 485 plate appearances this year. For the Mets in 2011, he had four homers in 487 plate appearances. Legitimately one of the NL's best players the last three years, Turner is going to be a fascinating free agent this winter. Yesterday, 10:07 pm

  • Machado finishes 4-for-6 with two-run bomb
Manny Machado went 4-for-6 with a homer and four total RBI to lead the Orioles over the Nationals 10-8 on Wednesday.

Advice: Machado's two-run bomb in the first inning set the tone for the high-scoring night. He then added run-scoring singles in the second and eighth innings. The four hits raised his batting average to .306 in 494 at-bats. The home run was his 29th. Machado has scored 87 runs and driven in 78. He has yet to steal a base after swiping 20 last year, but that's kind of a side concern at this point for his fantasy owners. Yesterday, 9:13 pm
    L, 4-0 @Was
  • Seager (foot) out of Mariners' lineup on Wed.
Kyle Seager will be held out Wednesday after fouling a ball off his foot on Tuesday night.

Advice: It doesn't sound like anything serious, but the Mariners have a day game against the Yankees and don't want to risk making the matter worse. Seager went 0-for-3 on Tuesday versus New York but still owns a cool .286/.364/.515 batting line with 24 home runs and 83 RBI in 124 games this season for Seattle. Yesterday, 9:54 am
    L, 7-6 @CWS
  • Gurriel (hamstring) remains out Wednesday
Yulieski Gurriel (hamstring) remains absent from the Astros' lineup on Wednesday.

Advice: Gurriel has now started just one of four games since joining the active major league roster on Sunday. He left his MLB debut with tightness in his right hamstring and is still apparently experiencing discomfort. This is probably a good time for a reminder that the Cuban slugger is 32 years old. Alex Bregman will start at third base again and bat second Wednesday versus Pirates ace Gerrit Cole. Yesterday, 7:19 am
  • Lamb's two-run double not enough for victory
Jake Lamb went 2-for-4 with a two-run double in Tuesday's loss to the Braves.

Advice: Lamb drove in two with a ground rule double in the third inning. He finished the evening with a pair of two-baggers, giving him 24 for the season as a whole. In addition, Lamb is slashing a shiny .262/.338/.535 with 24 homers and 77 RBI across 409 at-bats. On the whole, it has been a brilliant breakout year for the 25-year-old infielder. Tuesday, 10:42 pm
    L, 3-1 vs Atl
  • Saladino still sidelined by back discomfort
Tyler Saladino missed a fourth straight start Tuesday due to back soreness.

Advice: But the 27-year-old infielder did say Tuesday that it's "feeling better." Saladino hasn't appeared in a game for the White Sox since last Thursday. He had been serving as their primary starter at second base with Brett Lawrie (hamstring, quad, knee) on the disabled list. Tuesday, 8:56 pm
    W, 7-6 vs Sea
  • Gurriel (hamstring) remains out Tuesday night
Yulieski Gurriel (hamstring) is out of the Astros' starting lineup again on Tuesday night.

Advice: Gurriel left his MLB debut on Sunday with right hamstring tightness and was limited to pinch-hitting duties on Monday. His status appears to be the same for Tuesday. Alex Bregman is starting at third base and batting second versus Pirates right-hander Ivan Nova. Tuesday, 1:05 pm
  • Gurriel (hamstring) appears as pinch-hitter
Yulieski Gurriel (hamstring) grounded out as a pinch-hitter Monday against the Pirates.

Advice: Gurriel exited his MLB debut on Sunday because of hamstring tightness, but he's expected to be back in the starting lineup Tuesday. The Astros don't have the DH available under National League rules, so look for him to either play third base or left field. Tuesday, 5:41 am
  • Kyle Seager hits three-run homer in win
Kyle Seager went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and a walk in the Mariners' 7-5 defeat of the Yankees on Monday.

Advice: Seager's .884 OPS is about 100 points better than he's ever done before, and he's two away from matching his career high in homers. It's too bad his brother is getting all of the attention in the family; both have been among the game's top 20 or so position players this year. Monday, 10:38 pm
    L, 7-6 @CWS
  • Gurriel available off bench Monday
Yulieski Gurriel is available off the bench Monday against the Pirates.

Advice: Gurriel left his MLB debut Sunday with some tightness in his hamstring, but it's not considered serious. The Astros don't have the DH available for their series against the Pirates, but Gurriel is likely to be back in the lineup Tuesday either at third base or in left field. Monday, 3:52 pm
  • Yulieski Gurriel not in Monday's lineup
Yulieski Gurriel is not in Monday's lineup against the Pirates.

Advice: Gurriel went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk in his MLB debut Sunday before leaving with tightness in his right hamstring. He's considered day-to-day and will sit with the DH unavailable under National League rules. He could get a start a third base during the series, but Alex Bregman is starting there Monday. Monday, 1:04 pm
  • Justin Turner out of Dodgers lineup Monday
Justin Turner is out of the Dodgers' starting lineup Monday afternoon against the Reds.

Advice: Rob Segedin is starting at third base and batting eighth versus Reds right-hander Homer Bailey. This appears to be a routine day of rest for Turner, who's batting .320 with a 1.033 OPS so far in the second half. Monday, 7:04 am
    Bot 9, 0-4 vs SF
  • Gurriel leaves debut with hamstring tightness
Yulieski Gurriel left his MLB debut against the Orioles with tightness in his right hamstring.

Advice: After sitting through a lengthy rain delay, the right hamstring tightened up on the Cuban slugger. He's considered day-to-day for now, though Gurriel said that he'll be in the lineup on Monday night in Pittsburgh. Sunday, 6:08 pm
  • Astros recall Yulieski Gurriel from Triple-A
Astros recalled 3B Yulieski Gurriel from Triple-A Fresno.

Advice: Gurriel will make his major league debut in the designated hitter spot against the Orioles. Most of his playing time figures to come at third base, although he did make one start in left field in the minors. Alex Bregman might now see most of his starts in left. Gurriel batted an underwhelming .250/.262/.429 with two homers over 15 minor league games, but the 32-year-old has a seasoned bat and could hit the ground running with the Astros. Sunday, 5:29 am
  • Astros to promote Yulieski Gurriel on Sunday
Yulieski Gurriel will be recalled from Triple-A Fresno on Sunday.

Advice: The Astros' free agent prize from Cuba is finally ready to make his big league debut. Gurriel mostly played third base during his 15-game stint in the minor leagues though he did make one start in left field. He'll serve as the DH in his debut Sunday against the Orioles. Gurriel hit .250 in the minors with two homers and 14 RBI in 56 at-bats. Saturday, 8:13 pm
  • Tyler Saladino still out with sore back
Tyler Saladino is dealing with a sore back.

Advice: Saladino wasn't in Saturday's lineup and it looks like he's iffy for Sunday as well. The 27-year-old has played a utility role for the White Sox this season, appearing at seven different positions. Consider him day-to-day. Saturday, 5:56 pm
    W, 7-6 vs Sea
  • Holt (oblique) getting the day off Saturday
Brock Holt (oblique) is not in the Red Sox lineup Saturday against the Tigers.

Advice: Holt has been battling oblique tightness for a few days now and was unable to finish Friday night's game. Despite the injury, Holt should be available off the bench on Saturday. Holt opened the year as Boston's starting left fielder but was moved to a utility role when the Red Sox called up top prospect Andrew Benintendi. Saturday, 1:24 pm

  • Brock Holt leaves with left oblique soreness
Brock Holt was forced to leave Friday's game against the Tigers with left oblique soreness.

Advice: Red Sox manager John Farrell indicated that Holt only feels the injury when he throws. It wouldn't be surprising to see him rest on Saturday as a precautionary measure, though he could be available as a pinch hitter or runner off of the bench. Saturday, 5:59 am

  • Adrian Beltre homers twice to lead Rangers
Adrian Beltre clobbered a pair of solo homers on Friday, powering the Rangers to a 6-2 victory over the Rays in Tampa Bay.

Advice: Beltre tagged Rays starter Matt Andriese for the first shot in the sixth inning, increasing the Rangers advantage to 3-0. He added another blast off Ryan Garton in the seventh to cap off his squad's scoring. Beltre finished the night 4-for-5. The veteran slugger is having another nice season at the dish, slashing .290/.342/.476 with 20 home runs and 75 RBI. Friday, 7:25 pm
  • Sano (elbow) hitless in return to lineup
Miguel Sano (elbow) went 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts in his return to the lineup Thursday.

Advice: Sano's elbow kept him from playing for a few days while the Twins were in a National League park, but he's back in action now. The 23-year-old will work primarily as the Twins' designated hitter down the stretch. Friday, 5:15 am
    L, 8-5 vs Det
  • Aaron Hill (forearm) reaches twice in return
Aaron Hill (forearm) singled and drew a walk in his return to action Thursday.

Advice: Hill didn't play for a couple days due to some forearm tightness, but he should be fine. He's batting just .234/.298/.299 since joining the Red Sox. Friday, 5:12 am
    L, 2-1 @TB
  • Turner homers in second straight versus Phils
Justin Turner went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run against the Phillies on Thursday.

Advice: Stop me if you've heard this one: Justin Turner is on fire. That's not a ginger joke, but rather a nod to the 31-year-old's recent stretch in which he's hit four homers in his last eight games, including two in a row. Turner now has 23 homers on the year -- 20 of which have come since June 7 -- and 72 RBI, batting .278/.345/.516 through 113 games. He's been an incredible find for the Dodgers these past three seasons. Thursday, 9:03 pm

  • Machado homers, drives in three versus Astros
Manny Machado went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run and two runs scored in a win over the Astros on Thursday.

Advice: Machado swatted one of the Orioles' six homers on the evening. The dinger was his 27th of the season, giving him 72 RBI and 83 runs scored. He's cooled from his early season pace -- how could he not have, batting .334 with a 1.001 OPS through June -- but the 24-year-old is now hitting .304/.361/.552 overall. Thursday, 7:54 pm
    L, 4-0 @Was
  • Gurriel to start in left field Thursday night
Yulieski Gurriel will start in left field Thursday for Triple-A Fresno.

Advice: Well that's an interesting development. The expectation was that Gurriel would only play third base during his rehab assignment but it looks like the Astros are going to try him in the outfield. Gurriel has some outfield experience from his playing days in Cuba and got some reps there when he worked out for the Astros prior to signing. Moving Gurriel to the outfield full time would allow top prospect Alex Bregman to remain at third base. Thursday, 4:35 pm
  • Red Sox option Marco Hernandez to AAA
Red Sox optioned INF Marco Hernandez to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Advice: Hernandez was only in the majors for a couple days this time around and did not see a plate appearance. He is 13-for-44 this season at the major league level. Thursday, 7:28 am
  • Brock Holt goes 3-for-3 against Orioles
Brock Holt went 3-for-3 with a double as the Red Sox's third baseman on Wednesday.

Advice: Shaw hadn't started at third base all season until Aug. 7. Now he's done so on back-to-back days, in large part because Hanley Ramirez is away and Travis Shaw is playing first. Still, Holt makes more sense at third than Aaron Hill against a left-hander and there's a decent chance he'll outproduce Shaw the rest of the way. He should remain a factor at the hot corner. • Coghlan hits disabled list with rib injury
Cubs placed OF Chris Coghlan on the 15-day disabled list with a right rib contusion.

Advice: Coghlan suffered the injury in a collision during the first game against the Brewers in Tuesday's doubleheader. There is no current timetable for his return. In 78 games, the veteran outfielder was hitting just .165/.261/.288, so this isn't exactly a killer blow to the Cubs beyond mere depth. Wednesday, 4:08 pm

  • Sano (elbow) tosses across diamond Tuesday
Miguel Sano (elbow) threw across the diamond from third on Tuesday.

Advice: Sano wasn't throwing with full intensity, though, and because the Twins and Braves are playing in a National League park, manager Paul Molitor can't simply slot Sano into the lineup at DH. The young third baseman will sit for the third consecutive game on Wednesday, but could potentially return to the lineup on Thursday to DH in the first game of a four-game set against the Royals. Wednesday, 2:57 pm

  • Sano (elbow) remains out Wednesday night
Miguel Sano (elbow) remains out of the Twins' starting lineup on Wednesday night.

  • Jefry Marte (shoulder) slugs solo home run
Jefry Marte (shoulder) slugged a solo homer Tuesday in the Angels' win over the Mariners.

Advice: Marte was forced from Sunday's series finale against the Indians after being hit by a pitch on the shoulder and he sat out Monday's series opener in Anaheim. But all is well now, health-wise. The 25-year-old is batting .245/.295/.460 with nine home runs and 25 RBI in 58 games this season with the Angels. Wednesday, 5:52 am

  • Coghlan has sacrifice fly against Brewers
Chris Coghlan went 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and a run scored in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Brewers.

Advice: Coghlan had a bit of a scare when he collided with shortstop Addison Russell while going after a pop-fly, but he remained in the game before hitting the sacrifice fly against Damien Magnifico in the eighth inning. We really just wanted to find a way to fit Damien Magnifico into this recap, so here it is. Coghlan is batting just .165/.261/.288 in 78 games this season, but he has at least been a little better since returning to the Cubs. Tuesday, 2:17 pm

Miguel Sano (elbow) is out of the Twins' starting lineup Tuesday against the Braves.

  • Beltre's grand slam powers Rangers to victory
Adrian Beltre was the offensive hero for the Rangers on Monday, belting his 10th career grand slam in a win over the Athletics.

Advice: The Rangers started slowly offensively against Ross Detwiler but found their footing in the middle innings. A hit by pitch and a couple singles loaded the bases for Beltre in the fifth inning, and the veteran third baseman put one well into the left field seats. Beltre has 17 hits over his last 35 at-bats, pushing his average from .273 to .290. Aug 15, 8:29 pm
  • MRI comes back clean on Sano's right elbow
An MRI taken Monday morning on Miguel Sano's right elbow came back negative.

Advice: He also told reporters that the elbow feels much better. Sano has been limited to DH duties over the last week-plus and he sat out Sunday against the Royals, but the 23-year-old should resume playing third base this week. Sano is batting .250/.342/.491 with 20 home runs and 50 RBI in 84 games this season. Aug 15, 11:33 am
