    Joe Ryan was charged with four runs over 5 1/3 innings on Thursday in a loss to the Yankees.

    Advice: Ryan surrendered six hits, including a leadoff homer to Anthony Volpe, and was simply out-dueled by Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt, who reeled off eight shutout frames against Minnesota’s lineup. He finished with five strikeouts and only handed out one free pass.   • Pilfers 14th bag
    Young went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Wednesday's loss to the White Sox.

    Advice: Getting another start in the leadoff spot, Young swiped his 14th bag of the season, tying him for fifth in the majors behind Elly De La Cruz (26), Jose Caballero (17), Brice Turang (16) and Bobby Witt (15). Young only has two successful steals through 12 games in May though, as his issues getting on base consistently are catching up to him -- he's slashing only .167/.295/.222 on the month. The Nationals have been shut out in back-to-back games and sit in the bottom six in runs scored and team OPS on the season, and unless Young heats up at the plate, his time at the top of the order is likely about to end.     Varsho went 0-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base in Wednesday's loss to the Orioles.

    Advice: Batting second once again, Varsho stole his fifth base of the season in the fifth inning but was left stranded at third base in an eventual 3-2 loss. The 27-year-old is struggling to produce consistent contact -- he's batting only .150 (6-for-40) in May -- but over half of Varsho's 27 hits on the season have gone for extra bases, as he has eight doubles and seven homers.     Sewald worked a perfect ninth inning Wednesday to record his second save of the season in a 2-1 win over the Reds.

    Advice: The right-hander needed only eight pitches (four strikes) to get the job done. Sewald has been his usual effective self since making his season debut May 7, giving up just one run with a 4:1 K:BB in his first four innings, and he has a firm hold on the closer role for Arizona.     Advice: Garcia has homered in back-to-back games, giving him 10 long balls on the year. Prior to Tuesday, he had gone 19 games without a multi-hit effort, batting a meager .153 (11-for-72) in that span. That slump took the shine off his hot start to the campaign, but the outfielder is still slashing .259/.306/.494 with 34 RBI, 23 runs scored, four stolen bases and nine doubles over 44 contests this season.     Advice: Harper missed Tuesday's contest against New York due to a migraine, but he didn't show any lingering effects of the ailment upon his return to the lineup. The first baseman belted a solo homer to left field in his first at-bat, then plated a pair of runs with a double in the fifth inning. Harper had been in a mini slump coming into the game with a .190 average and just one RBI over his previous five contests, but he appears to be back on track.   • Adolis García goes yard for 10th homer Wednesday
    Adolis García went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer to lift the Rangers to a 4-0 win over the Guardians.

    Advice: García knocked a base hit in the fourth inning, then took Nick Sandlin deep for a two-run homer in the sixth to extend the Rangers lead. The 31-year-old slugger has multiple hits in back-to-back games amid a cold stretch. He hadn’t had two hits in a game since April 21.   • Paul Sewald quiets Reds to collect second save
    Paul Sewald tossed a perfect ninth inning on Wednesday against the Reds to collect his second save of the season.

    Advice: Sewald got the call to protect a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth after Lourdes Gurriel Jr. put Arizona ahead in the top of the frame with a two-out RBI double. He got Mike Ford to ground out before coaxing a harmless pop up from Spencer Steer and a fly out from Jeimer Candelario to end the contest. The 33-year-old veteran stopper has converted both of his save chances to go along with a 2.25 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 4/1 K/BB ratio across four innings (four appearances) since returning from the injured list back on May 7.
