    • Jackson Merrill homers in nine-run fifth inning
Jackson Merrill hit a three-run homer to camp a nine-run fifth as the Padres bested the Red Sox 9-2 on Friday.

Advice: The Padres were held scoreless until the fifth, when the first nine batters totaled nine runs on eight hits and one walk against Nick Pivetta and Greg Weissert. Merrill concluded the rally with the second homer of the inning. After that, the Padres put their bats back to bed, coming up with just one hit off Chase Anderson in the final four innings. Merrill’s homer was his 11th in 82 games. His current .282/.318/.439 line is a near match for the .277/.326/.444 he came in at least year, only that was compiled in high-A and Double-A. • Nick Pivetta tagged for five runs by Padres
Nick Pivetta surrendered five runs in four-plus innings Friday in a loss to the Padres.

Advice: Pivetta pitched four scoreless innings, striking out four, before giving up four straight hits and a walk to begin the fifth. He was pulled at that point, and the Padres ended up scoring nine times in the frame. Pivetta has allowed 15 earned runs over 19 1/3 innings in his last four starts, taking his season ERA from 3.40 to 4.52. We would say he’s droppable in mixed leagues at this point, but since he faces the Marlins in Miami next time out, it’s probably worth giving him one more chance. Rotoworld 2 minutes ago

    • Strikes out five in loss
Parker (5-4) took the loss against the Rays on Friday, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk with five strikeouts over five innings.

Advice: Parker surrendered a solo home run to Jose Siri in the second inning and another run on an RBI single by Isaac Paredes in the third. He rebounded with two perfect innings but was pulled after the fifth at 92 pitches. The southpaw has completed at least five frames in 12 of 14 starts this season and now owns a 3.32 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 63:18 K:BB in 2024. He lines up for a home matchup against the Mets next week. • Craig Kimbrel nails down another save
Craig Kimbrel struck out two Rangers in a clean ninth innings to earn the save for Baltimore on Friday.

Advice: Kimbrel has been nails of late. He’s converted 11 of his last 12 save chances and allowed just one earned run since May 10th. He’s been one of the best and most surprising closers in baseball this season. Rotoworld 40 minutes ago

    • Mitchell Parker strikes out five in loss to Rays
Mitchell Parker pitched decently in Friday night’s loss to the Rays in Tampa Bay, surrendering two runs on six hits over his five innings of work.

Advice: On the plus side, the 24-year-old southpaw racked up five strikeouts on the night while allowing just one base on balls. Parker served up a solo homer to Jose Siri in the second inning, then the Rays added another run in the third on an RBI single off the bat of Isaac Paredes. Parker got 13 swings and misses on 92 pitches in the game, posting a CSW of 28 percent. Now 5-4 on the season, he’ll look to get back on track as he carries a 3.32 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and a 63/18 K/BB ratio (78 2/3 innings) into Wednesday’s matchup against the Mets. Rotoworld 58 minutes ago
    • Officially placed on IL
The Giants placed Estrada on the 10-day injured list Friday with a left wrist sprain, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reported earlier Friday that Estrada has been playing through multiple injuries recently, and the Giants will now place the 28-year-old infielder on the IL so that he can recover properly. Tyler Fitzgerald will come up from Triple-A Sacramento to help replenish the Giants' infield depth, though Nick Ahmed could see an increase in playing time while Estrada is sidelined. • Giants place Thairo Estrada on 10-day injured list
Giants placed INF Thairo Estrada on the 10-day injured list with left wrist tendinitis.

Advice: Giants’ manager Bob Melvin noted that Estrada has been playing through a lot recently, so this was a good opportunity to sit him down for a while and allow him to get right. Brett Wisely is starting in his place at second base on Friday night and could be in line for increased action while Estrada is sidelined. Rotoworld Today, 5:38 pm

    • Headed toward IL stint
Manager Bob Melvin said Friday that it's likely Estrada will be placed on the injured list due to an undisclosed injury, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Advice: Pavlovic notes that Estrada has been working through multiple injuries lately and hasn't played in back-to-back games. With the Giants needing to free up a roster spot for LaMonte Wade's (hamstring) return, Estrada could be given an extended break for rest and recovery. Keep an eye out for an official transaction and some clarification regarding his health. Rotowire.com Today, 4:38 pm

    • Thairo Estrada could be heading to injured list
Thairo Estrada is not in the Giants’ starting lineup for Friday night’s showdown against the Dodgers.

Advice: Unfortunately, it sounds like it could be something more than a routine night off for Estrada and the 28-year-old infielder could be heading to the injured list. Brett Wisely will start in his place and will bat eighth against Landon Knack and the Dodgers on Friday evening in San Francisco. Rotoworld Today, 4:22 pm
