    • MacKenzie Gore denied win after strong showing
MacKenzie Gore allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings and struck out eight Monday against the Mets.

Advice: Gore was at 104 pitches, so itā€™s kind or understandable that he was pulled in the sixth. Still, he seemed to be very much in control at that point. Heā€™d given up just a soft single before rebounding to retire the next two batters in the sixth. The Nationals pulled him with a 2-0 lead in favor of Derek Law, and the Mets, aided by a CJ Abrams error, went on to score three runs in the frame. That Gore didnā€™t get a win will probably save the Nationals about $100,000 in arbitration this winter, so they have that going for them. Rotoworld Yesterday, 7:32 pm
    • Fans eight in no-decision
Gore did not factor into the decision in Monday's 9-7 loss to the Mets, allowing one run on five hits and one walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out eight.

Advice: The Washington southpaw created an incredible 21 whiffs to collect his eight punchouts. This was a bounce-back performance for Gore as he struggled in five June starts with a 5.13 ERA across 26.1 innings. The 25-year-old's season ERA now stands at 3.47 with 107:29 K:BB over 90.2 innings. He is tentatively scheduled to make his next outing against the Cardinals at home this weekend. • Jeremy PeƱa snaps homerless drought
After being stuck on five for six weeks, Jeremy PeƱa finally hit his sixth homer Monday in the win over the Blue Jays.

Advice: PeƱa seems to have things turned around now after a month-long slump; heā€™s 9-for-29 with five extra-base hits, eight RBI and a 2/4 K/BB in his last eight games. Rotoworld Yesterday, 3:15 pm

    • Justin Verlander has started playing catch
Astros general manager Dana Brown said Justin Verlander (neck) has resumed playing catch.

Advice: The 41-year-old has been on the injured list since the middle of June with a neck issue, and the Astros have been tight-lipped about his recovery. According to The Athleticā€™s Chandler Rome, ā€œVerlander has deferred all questions to the team, which remains insistent this injury is just a neck issue,ā€ but the team has said that heā€™ll need a prolonged buildup and then at least one rehab start, which means a return before the All-Star break feels unlikely. • Ryan Mountcastle sits due to illness
Ryan Mountcastle didnā€™t play Sunday because he was ill, according to manager Brandon Hyde.

Advice: Mountcastle also didnā€™t play Saturday, but since he occasionally sits against right-handers, that went without any explanation. That he was absent tonight against a lefty demanded one. There was no additional comment about whether the Orioles expected him to return Tuesday. Rotoworld Sunday, 8:31 pm

    • Dealing with illness
Mountcastle was unavailable for Sunday's 11-2 loss to the Rangers due to an illness, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Advice: Mountcastle's absence from the lineup was a surprising one Sunday considering his impressive .306/.359/.494 slash line against left-handed pitchers this season, but manager Brandon Hyde clarified after the contest that Mountcastle was feeling under the weather. With Baltimore off Monday, there's a good chance that Mountcastle will be ready to go for the team's series opener in Seattle on Tuesday. Rotowire.com Sunday, 7:20 pm

    • Provides offense Sunday
Hoerner went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 7-1 loss to the Brewers.

Advice: Hoerner led off the contest with a solo home run, his fourth long ball of the season and second in the last four games. However, he didn't do anything else the rest of the afternoon, while the team as a whole mustered only one additional hit. Still, Hoerner managed to extend his hitting streak to eight games, and he's batting .344 during that stretch. The infielder should remain a viable fantasy option from the top of the order so long as he stays locked in at the plate. Rotowire.com Sunday, 7:18 pm

    • Gunnar Henderson strikes out four times
Gunnar Henderson lost his 36-game on-base streak by striking out all four times up against the Rangers on Sunday.

Advice: All four strikeouts came against Andrew Heaney. Itā€™s his first golden sombrero since Oct. 1, 2022. Rotoworld Sunday, 7:15 pm

Gunnar Henderson announced on ESPN that he will participate in this yearā€™s Home Run Derby.

Advice: Henderson added that itā€™ll be the first time heā€™s participated in a competitive Derby. The 23-year-old shortstop is currently tied for second in the majors with 26 homers. Rotoworld Sunday, 4:47 pm
