    • Madison Bumgarner was knocked around for nine runs (seven earned) over 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Rockies.
Advice: Bumgarner blew leads of 4-0 and 5-4, including a grand slam by Jordan Pacheco in a five-run fifth inning. The seven earned runs allowed were a season-high and fell one short of his career-high. The southpaw struck out four and walked a pair in the loss. Bumgarner has been money in seven out of his nine starts this season, so we're expecting better results next time out against the Nationals at home.

    • Pinch-hitter Chad Tracy homered off Huston Street in the top of the 10th inning to lead the Nationals to a 6-5 win over the Padres on Friday.
Advice: Incredibly, it was the first RBI for a Nationals pinch-hitter in 42 games this season. It was also the sixth homer surrendered by Street in 17 1/3 innings, tripling his total from his 39 innings pitched last year.

    • Marco Scutaro went 3-for-5 with an RBI single and a run scored Friday against the Rockies.
Advice: Ho-hum, just another multi-hit night for the hottest hitter in the game. Scutaro now has a 16-game hitting streak and has raised his batting average from .215 to .327 in the process. The 37-year-old is not going to provide much in the way of pop or speed, but keep running him out there in all formats until he cools down.

    • ESPN New York reports that the Mets have "intensified" discussions about potentially demoting Ike Davis.
Advice: Davis was able to snap a six game hitless streak Friday, but he may not have more than this weekend's series against the Cubs to prove he deserves to avoid a demotion. If Davis is sent down, the Mets are expected to call up Andrew Brown from Triple-A Las Vegas to replace him on the active roster. Davis is batting .160/.245/.267 with four home runs in 38 games this season.

    • Mets manager Terry Collins said Thursday that he is committed to batting Ike Davis cleanup "through the weekend."
Advice: Davis went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts Thursday and is now hitless over his last 22 at-bats, dropping his batting average to .157 for the year. The Mets are trying to be patient with the 26-year-old first baseman through his prolonged slump, but he can't keep killing rallies in the middle of the order for much longer.

    • Reds optioned LHP Tony Cingrani to Triple-A Louisville.
Advice: The Reds need to clear a rotation spot with Johnny Cueto returning from the disabled list Monday, so Cingrani will officially be sent down. He was mostly impressive over his first six major league starts, posting a 3.27 ERA, nine walks and 41 strikeouts over 33 innings. Neftali Soto has been called up to replace Cingrani on the active roster, while Mike Leake will remain the Reds' fifth starter.

    • Tony Cingrani yielded three runs in five innings Friday in a no-decision against the Phillies.
Advice: Following his recent bout of shoulder soreness, Cingrani needed 100 pitches to complete the five frames. After posting a 1.50 ERA over his first three starts in the majors, the southpaw has allowed nine runs in 15 innings over his last three starts and has served up five homers in the process. We still like Cingrani for the long-term, but he could be headed back to the minors next week when Johnny Cueto (lat) returns from the disabled list.

    • Tony Cingrani's next start has been pushed back due to a sore pitching shoulder.
Advice: The soreness is said to be minor, but with Monday's off day, the Reds want to play it safe. It's possible they could skip over his turn entirely, depending on how he recovers. This certainly won't help Cingrani's case to remain in the rotation after Johnny Cueto returns.

    • Tony Cingrani said Monday that he "wouldn't be surprised" if he gets sent back to Triple-A Louisville.
Advice: The 23-year-old left-hander has registered a stellar 2.89 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 37/7 K/BB over 28 innings this season for the Reds, but Johnny Cueto (lat, oblique) is just about ready to return from the disabled list. It will either be Cingrani or Leake leaving the Cincy starting rotation to make room. "Whatever they tell me to do, I will do," Cingrani said. • The Cubs are moving Carlos Villanueva to the bullpen.
Advice: Villanueva held his own as a starter, but he's no longer needed in the rotation with Matt Garza returning from the disabled list. The Cubs were considering going with a six-man rotation, but decided against it after Villanueva allowed seven runs over five innings in his last outing. Villanueva has a 3.93 ERA and 1.14 WHIP this season and will now be used as long reliever.

Advice: Villanueva was consistently bad Tuesday, allowing runs in four of his five innings of work. In total, Rockies hitters got to him for 12 hits, including two home runs. After starting the season on a roll, Villanueva now owns a 3.93 ERA and has just one win to show for his efforts. He should be better his next time out against the Pirates.

    • Matt Garza (lat) will return from the disabled list to start Tuesday's game against the Pirates.
Advice: Garza threw six scoreless innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Iowa earlier this week, so he shouldn't be on a strict pitch count in his season debut and will provide an immediate upgrade to the Cubs' rotation. His return means Carlos Villanueva will be relegated to a bullpen role.

    • The Cubs will wait to see how Matt Garza (lat) feels and how his bullpen session goes Saturday before they make a decision about activating him.
Advice: Garza declared himself ready to rejoin the Cubs' rotation after six scoreless innings during Thursday's rehab start. It's probably just a formality at this point before the team announces that he'll rejoin the rotation next week. Carlos Villanueva is the likeliest candidate to be demoted to the bullpen.

    • Jorge De La Rosa was tagged for five runs in five innings Friday in a win over the Giants.
Advice: De La Rosa gave up nine hits and one walk and only registered one strikeout. It was quite a contrast for the southpaw, as he entered Friday's outing with a 14-inning scoreless streak and 12 scoreless frames at Coors Field this season. Still, the Rockies' offense powered him to the victory. De La Rosa is 5-3 with a 3.58 ERA through nine starts this season, but he needs more strikeouts to be interesting again in fantasy leagues.

Advice: The Phillies' current plan calls for Zambrano to pitch in another extended spring game next week before possibly sending him to a minor league affiliate. Advice: Zambrano recently agreed to a deal with the independent Long Island Ducks, but never reported to the club because he was confident he would be able to find a minor league deal somewhere. And he has. The 31-year-old had a mediocre 4.49 ERA and 95/75 K/BB ratio over 132 1/3 innings last season with the Marlins and will function as starting pitching depth for Philadelphia. The 24-year-old suffered a non-displaced fracture of the first metatarsal in his left foot during a mid-April game at Triple-A Las Vegas and will continue to be moved along slowly. • Despite taking a comebacker off his pitching hand, Drew Storen pitched a scoreless 10th inning Friday against the Padres for his first save.
Advice: Aided by a Ryan Zimmerman throwing error, Rafael Soriano took a blown save in the ninth. Storen got his chance in the 10th after a Chad Tracy homer and got the job done, though not before allowing a couple of singles. The first of those was a hard shot up the middle that deflected off his pitching hand. Storen, though, remained in after a couple of warmups. • Jordan Pacheco went 2-for-5 with a grand slam and five RBI in Friday's 10-9 win over the Giants.
Advice: Pacheco had an RBI ground out in the bottom of the second inning while his fifth-inning grand slam broke a 5-5 tie. With a .313/.360/.410 batting line over 26 games this season, the 27-year-old continues to be a useful player for Colorado.
