  • Johnson homers, knocks in 3 to top Brewers
Kelly Johnson went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and a two-run home run to help the Braves fend off the Brewers on Monday.

Advice: Johnson started the scoring with a two-run blast to right-field off of Kyle Lohse in the first inning. He added an RBI single in the second inning to make it a 4-1 game. The 33-year-old has cooled off considerably since being activated from the disabled list a month ago, but is still hitting a respectable .272/.315/.437 with seven home runs and 28 RBI.

Preston Tucker had the best game of his young career, going 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored to lead the Astros past the Indians on Monday.

Advice: Tucker, celebrating his 25th birthday, drilled a solo home run to right field in the fourth inning against Carlos Carrasco and added an RBI single in the sixth. It's the first four-hit game of his young career. He's hitting .252/.316/.434 with five home runs and 21 RBI in 174 plate appearances.

  • Khris Davis (knee) to be activated Tuesday
Khris Davis (knee) is slated to return from the disabled list on Tuesday.

Advice: Davis is ready to return now, but he played in five rehab games in five days through Sunday so the Brewers wanted to give him a day of rest before activating him. The outfielder missed five and a half weeks of action with a torn meniscus in his right knee.

Mets purchased the contract of OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis from Triple-A Las Vegas.

  • Tigers claim Krauss from Rays
Tigers claimed 1B Marc Krauss off waivers from the Rays.

Advice: Krauss was DFA'ed on July 4 after being optioned to Triple-A earlier in the week. He struck out seven times in 10 at-bats in (very) limited duty for the Rays. Kraus is just a .192 hitter for his career at the big league level over the last three seasons.

  • Sands continues to shred Triple-A pitching
Indians OF prospect Jerry Sands clubbed a home run Sunday in a win for Triple-A Columbus.

Advice: It was his fourth blast in seven games. He's plated seven runs over that span. 19 of Sands' 42 hits have gone for extra bases. Sands has played 10 games with the Indians this year, hitting .375 with six RBI in 24 at-bats. The 27-year-old could get another chance in Cleveland later this season.

  • Huntington says Polanco will not be demoted
Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said that the idea of sending the struggling Gregory Polanco to Triple-A "hasn't even been a conversation."

Advice: That's a very strong endorsement from Huntington. He elaborated by saying, "We believe Gregory Polanco is going to be a quality major league player but there are growing pains. There is an evolution for a young player." The 23-year-old outfielder is hitting .231/.300/.330 with three homers, 19 RBI and 17 steals across 273 at-bats this season.

Joe Frisaro of reports that the Marlins will recall Jordany Valdespin from Triple-A New Orleans.

Advice: He'll take the spot of Marcell Ozuna on the Marlins active roster after the outfielder was demoted on Sunday. Valdespin was pulled from his game at Triple-A shortly afterwards and is heading to join the team in Boston for Tuesday's game, though the move hasn't been announced yet.
    Sunday, 5:08 pm
  • Gregory Polanco not in Sunday's lineup
Gregory Polanco is not in the Pirates' lineup Sunday.

Advice: It's rare to see Polanco sitting versus a righty, but Danny Salazar has fared a bit better against left-handed batters in his career. Josh Harrison is in right field Sunday, with Jung-Ho Kang handling third base.
    Sunday, 9:12 am
  • Nolan Reimold to go on paternity leave
Nolan Reimold is expected to go on the paternity list after Sunday's game.

Advice: He can be away from the team for up to three days. The 31-year-old has played sparingly this year, making just 38 at-bats over 16 games. The 10-day minor league rehab window doesn't apply to players on paternity leave. That allows Ryan Flaherty to take Reimold's roster spot even though he was just optioned on Saturday.

  • Moss cranks two-run homer in win over Pirates
Brandon Moss went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Friday's win over the Pirates.

Advice: Moss launched his two-run shot off of Pirates starter Charlie Morton in the second inning. It was the first baseman's 14th bomb of the season and pushed his RBI total to 44. He might not hit for much average (currently .230), but his 14 homers put him on track to come close to--if not surpass--the career-high 30 he smacked in 2013. Moss is looking to post his fourth straight season with 20 or more long balls.

  • Brandon Moss homers, knocks in five
Brandon Moss had a three-run homer and a two-run double Wednesday against the Rays.

    Wednesday, 6:55 pm
  • Marc Krauss strikes out twice
Marc Krauss struck out in both of his at-bats Wednesday before being removed for a pinch-hitter.

Advice: Incredibly, it's the second time in four games for the Rays that Krauss, a left-handed hitter, has been replaced by a right-handed pinch-hitter against a right-handed pitcher. Which makes one wonder why the Rays are playing him at first base or why they bothered acquiring him in the first place. He's 1-for-10 so far for the team.

  • Shane Robinson leaves after HBP on elbow
Shane Robinson left Wednesday's game against the Reds after being hit on the left elbow by a pitch.

Advice: Robinson stayed in to run the bases after being pelted by the Johnny Cueto offering, but he appeared to be in a lot of pain so it's no surprise he eventually exited. It's unclear whether he'll need to have X-rays.

  • Shane Robinson scratched due to the flu
Shane Robinson was a late scratch from Tuesday's lineup due to the flu.

Advice: He should be fine in a day or two. Danny Santana took Robinson's spot in the lineup and played center field, while Eddie Rosario moved over to left.
    Tuesday, 6:31 pm
  • Polanco batting leadoff Tuesday
Gregory Polanco will bat leadoff Tuesday against the Tigers.

Advice: Polanco took a seat Sunday against Braves left-hander Alex Wood, but he's back in there against right-hander Justin Verlander. The 23-year-old owns a .691 OPS against right-handers this season compared to a .301 OPS vs. southpaws.

  • Khris Davis (knee) to begin rehab assignment
Khris Davis (knee) will begin a rehab assignment with Low-A Wisconsin on Wednesday.

Advice: The rehab assignment is expected to last five days, putting Davis in line for activation on July 5 assuming all goes well. The outfielder has been on the shelf for a month with a torn meniscus in his right knee.

  • Gregory Polanco on the bench Sunday

  • Preston Tucker not in Astros lineup Saturday
Preston Tucker is not in the Astros starting lineup on Saturday.

Advice: Evan Gattis is getting the start in left field for the Astros while Chris Carter plays first base and Jon Singleton serves as the team's designated hitter. Tucker, who has been extremely inconsistent in his rookie campaign, is hitting just .185/.243/.338 with two homers and eight RBI in the month of June.
