    • Matt Lindstrom has allowed an earned run in three of his last five relief appearances.
Advice: The streaky Idahoan didn't allow a run through April 20, then gave up six in his next four appearances, then was perfect in May until the 10th, when his newest batch of concerns cropped up. The 32-year-old reliever, signed to a one-year, $2.8 million contract over the winter, holds a 4.76 ERA over 17 innings. Lindstrom will continue operating out of a middle relief role.

    • Pitching exclusively out of the bullpen, Josh Collmenter is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA and 0.95 WHIP over 22 innings.
Advice: Last year's horrific April that cost him a rotation spot seems like a distant memory. Collmenter finished with a 2.13 ERA in 72 innings (seven starts, 17 relief appearances) over the final five months in 2012 and has carried that success into a new season. Of particular interest is his strikeout and K/BB rate, both improved over last year, which were both improvements over 2010's fifth-place-ROY-voting campaign.

    • Dane De La Rosa has a 4.91 ERA over 21 appearances.
Advice: The 6-foot-7 hurler has allowed four runs over 3 1/3 innings in the last week. His 20/8 K/BB rate in 22 innings is decent, but it doesn't necessarily speak to any potential improvement coming. De La Rosa has never solved the puzzle of major league hitters, posting a 7.08 ERA over 33 games despite a shiny 33/13 K/BB rate.

    • Pedro Strop was slapped with a loss Monday against the Yankees after allowing two runs over two-thirds of an inning.
Advice: Called upon to begin the 10th inning, Strop gave up consecutive doubles to Ichiro Suzuki and Vernon Wells before recording a pair of outs. He was asked to intentionally walk Robinson Cano before the O's tabbed Brian Matusz, who allowed an inherited runner to score. Strop's stuff is absolutely lethal, but his post-WBC efforts haven't impressed. The 27-year-old holds a 5.19 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 21 appearances. He's got closer's stuff, but is nowhere close to being trusted in the ninth inning.

    • Jose Altuve has dropped Scott Boras as his agent and has rejoined Scott Pucino and Wil Polidor of Octagon.
Advice: Altuve left Octagon about a year ago to align himself with Boras, but he has had a change of heart. The 23-year-old second baseman won't be arbitration-eligible for the first time until after the 2014 season and is under team control through 2017, so the Astros have plenty of time to discuss a potential extension. However, the switch from Boras to Octagon likely increases the chance of getting a deal done.

    • Jose Altuve went 3-for-5 against the Pirates on Saturday, his first game since May 13.
Advice: Altuve was on the bereavement list for the past five days, but it didn't show in his first game back. Altuve just continued to hit, raising his average to .342 in the process. The only reason he doesn't get the attention given to other star second basemen is the fact that he plays for the Astros. Fantasy players know his skill level.

    • Astros manager Bo Porter said that Jose Altuve will be activated Saturday.
Advice: Altuve was placed on the bereavement list Tuesday following the death of his grandmother. Jake Elmore will be sent down to Triple-A Oklahoma City once Altuve rejoins the club.

    • Giants placed RHP Santiago Casilla on the 15-day disabled list with a cyst on his right knee.
Advice: Casilla has been dealing with a cyst on his right knee and recently started wearing a brace, but he is apparently still feeling discomfort. The Giants are clearly hoping that a couple of weeks of rest will do the trick. Sandy Rosario will replace him in the bullpen.

    • Brandon Belt went 4-for-5 with his sixth home run of the season and four runs scored in Monday's 8-0 blowout of the Nationals.
Advice: Belt has reached base safely in 10 of his last 11 starts. Belt suffered through a forgettable April, batting .235/.287/.353, but his playing time and production have both spiked in May. Belt cut down his strikeouts and increased his rate of walks and his numbers reflect an improved approach at the plate. In May, he's slashing .250/.357/.521 with three homers over 48 at-bats.

Advice: Maya has an ugly 5.07 ERA and 34/17 K/BB ratio in 49 2/3 innings over eight starts this season in Triple-A, but the Nationals need a fresh arm for their bullpen. This will be his first stint in the majors since 2011.

    • Adam Dunn hit a three-run homer off Jon Lester in the White Sox's victory Monday.
Advice: The home run was his second off a lefty this year. He hit 15 off southpaws last season after going without a single homer off a left-hander in 2011. Overall, Dunn has 11 homers this year. He's batting .211 with 13 RBI in 16 games this month after coming in at .148 with 12 RBI in 24 games in April.

    • Adam Dunn (back) is back in the White Sox' lineup Sunday.
Advice: Dunn left Saturday's game with back spasms, but he's feeling a lot better a day later. The veteran is batting .421/.450/1.158 with four homers and 10 RBI over his last five games.

    • Adam Dunn left Saturday's game against the Angels due to back spasms.
Advice: Jeff Keppinger hit for the first baseman in the fifth inning. Spasms are generally a day-to-day thing, so we'll have to see how Dunn is feeling Sunday before knowing if he'll have to miss some games. It's unfortunate timing, too, as Dunn has been heating up at the plate.

    • Huston Street notched his 11th save Monday by tossing a perfect ninth as the Padres beat the Cardinals 4-2.
Advice: This was Street's first perfect complete inning since May 8 against the Marlins. Street has been uncharacteristically wild this season and that has led to an 0-3 record, 4.19 ERA and 1.24 WHIP (19 points above his career mark). If Street can improve upon his 13/8 K/BB rate (over 20 appearances), he'll have another good season as San Diego's stopper. If he doesn't iron out his control issues, it could be a long year. Street's stuff simply isn't good enough (he's allowed six homers in 2013) to compensate for extra base runners.

    • Huston Street earned his 10th save of the year Saturday as the Padres beat the Nationals 2-1.
Advice: He struck out a batter but walked two in the scoreless frame. Street was one day removed from being the losing pitcher after giving up a game-winning home run to Chad Tracy. Street is 0-3, going 10-for-11 in save conversions and posting a 4.42 ERA and 1.31 WHIP.

    • Zach Duke was rocked for four runs on seven hits over 3 1/3 innings in a loss to the Giants on Monday.
Advice: Duke struck out one and didn't walk a batter. His most impressive feat of the evening was logging one of the three hits off Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong. Duke, making his first start of the season as a fill-in for Ross Detwiler (lower back), didn't acquit himself well. Though he kept the ball in the strike zone and only allowed one extra-base hit, San Francisco was fooled by none of the offered slop. Duke will presumably now return to the bullpen, though his 8.84 ERA and 1.80 WHIP may not be long for Washington's roster.

    • Zach Duke will start for the Nationals on Monday against the Giants.

    • Giants placed RHP Ryan Vogelsong on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right hand.
Advice: Vogelsong was hit by a pitch while swinging the bat in the fifth inning Tuesday and suffered fractures above and below the top knuckle in his pinkie. He's expected to undergo surgery Tuesday and will likely miss around six weeks. Chad Gaudin is the most likely replacement for the rotation, though the Giants could call up Michael Kickham from Triple-A.

  • Thu, May 16
    • Ryan Vogelsong will make his next scheduled start on Monday against the Nationals.
Advice: Giants manager Bruce Bochy was considering replacing Vogelsong and his 8.06 ERA, but he'll give him at least one more shot. "This guy has done a lot," the skipper said. "He's earned some things, including a longer leash." The fact that the Giants' best option to replace Vogelsong is likely long reliever Chad Gaudin surely played into Bochy's decision. Vogelsong will obviously be a sketchy fantasy play Monday.

    • Dylan Axelrod held the Red Sox to two runs and four hits in six innings to pick up a win Monday.
Advice: It's just Axelrod's second win in nine outings this season, but he's given the White Sox five quality starts, plus two more in which he was pulled in the sixth having allowed three or fewer runs. He's now probably moved back ahead of Hector Santiago with John Danks due back and a rotation spot on the line.

    • Joe Thatcher earned his fifth hold by tossing two-thirds of a scoreless inning against the Cardinals on Monday night.
Advice: When healthy, the southpaw has been terrific for the Padres. Between 2009-2011, he posted a 2.66 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 10.9 K/9 rate. This year he is 1-0 with a 2.13 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 10/1 K/BB rate over 21 appearances. As an effective LOOGY who calls PETCO home, Thatcher is a solid middle reliever in deeper NL-only formats.

    • Patrick Corbin moved to 7-0 by pitching a three-hitter and striking out 10 as the Diamondbacks topped the Rockies 5-1 on Monday.
Advice: Corbin's April could have been written off as something of a fluke after he went 3-0 with a 1.91 ERA. However, he's now 4-0 with a 0.92 ERA in May. It's a pretty amazing transformation for a guy who went 6-8 with a 4.54 ERA and 14 homers allowed in 107 innings last year.

Advice: He struck out five and walked three. It was the second consecutive start in which Miller labored and was pulled after 5 2/3 innings, tallying 96 pitches against the Mets on Wednesday and 107 this evening. Undoubtedly, Miller must learn how to be more efficient. That will come in time. He already has down the dominate-major-league-brutes thing, posting a 1.74 ERA and 0.93 WHIP over nine starts.

    • Nationals prospect Anthony Rendon started at second base Monday night for Double-A Harrisburg.
Advice: It's interesting given Danny Espinosa's struggles, but Nationals manager Davey Johnson doesn't think Rendon is ready to play second base at the major league level yet. "We like him - we like him a lot," said Johnson. "But putting him at second at the major-league level, he's not there yet. He's not (playing second) specifically. He's just occasionally going over there." Rendon is hitting .390 (23-for-59) with four home runs and 16 RBI since his demotion earlier this month. Nothing appears imminent, but it would be a good idea to continue to monitor his progress in fantasy leagues.
